When my furnace failed during a cold spell I contacted Apollo on the recommendation of Associated Heating who were too busy to do a service call. I could make an appointment with Apollo for 3 days later. The technician arrived exactly on time. He quickly diagnosed the problem but did not have the part he needed to complete the repair. The 5 stars are for service. After Apollo repairs the fan on my furnace I will report on competence. Met Manny this morning at a rental property I take care of for my daughter. He had already looked at the furnace (the tenant let him in) and he was speaking with another tenant about the situation. The tenants said the furnace smelled when they used it and so they seldom turn it on. Manny checked the C02 (fine) and he did notice a part is wearing out and told me I have less than a year. He told me I would need to enlarge the space (a closet) where the furnace is kept if he is to make any repairs. He gave me a lot of information about possibly replacing the furnace (he advised against it - as I will have to move it's location, new ductwork $12K job) or trying to make it last a few more years. I was impressed. I will have him look at a property I just bought (for me to live in) and give me a bid for a new furnace and ducts. read more

This guy is a jerk..J-E-R-K. After our vent fell off of our furnace, we called him to come and take a look. Apparently because of his superior knowledge on furnaces, he finds it necessary to make those who don't know as much feel inferior. Any question asked was responded to with a look of utter disbelief as to say "You don't know that?" The best part of this story is that the one thing he kept repeating to us what that we could still run the furnace even after the vent fell off. Well we had been told previously that was a bad idea and after having 3 other bids to fix, they all agreed that this guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Came out after my furnace stopped working. In a perfect world, I would've been able to schedule them to roll through 20 minutes after I called, but it's a busy time of year now. Does Apollo really need another 5-star review? Doesn't hurt. Our tenants in San Mateo contacted us early Saturday morning saying that they weren't getting enough heat even though the heater was on all night. Great! Why does everything happen on the weekend? We got two different places on the Peninsula to come out Saturday and take a look. One said: Bad design with the ductwork by builder (agree on that) and furnace is not powerful enough for that size house (possibly). Options? Big fix (install new furnace for $2,400) or quick fix (install new ductwork for $600). The other business said: It's not the circuits, but can't tell what it is without full diagnosis. Gave us a reference for another guy who wouldn't be available until Tuesday the earliest to diagnose. Since nothing was going to be done before Monday anyway (in the meanwhile, we gave our tenants a space heater), started looking at all the reviews on Yelp! and happened upon Apollo. Wow! So many good reviews, but looks like their service area is SF only. Darn! But I was determined to call first thing Monday (7:30am) and I was able to schedule an appointment for later in the afternoon. Manny Jr. came within the one-hour scheduled window , went up into the attic for about 25 minutes, came back down and said problem was resolved. The strap to the cold air duct had come loose and the duct had collapsed into itself thereby trapping the air. He said the screw used to hold the strap down was too short and thus used a longer screw, which should prevent this from happpening again. Did he think we needed a new furnace? No, should last another 10, 15 years. Thank goodness for Apollo. For the price of a service call, saved us from paying hundreds or even thousands for something we didn't need. read more

I had my furnace installed about 14 years ago by a different company. I recently noticed it wasn't blowing any air. I found Apollo on YELP and they sent a technician out in a few days. He was able to come earlier than originally scheduled (after calling me first to make sure I would be home), diagnosed the problem as a bad motor capacitor, and he had the part in his truck. He fixed the problem fairly quickly and stuck around a bit to make sure the furnace and thermostat were working properly. The tech was professional and friendly. Great service overall. read more

Extremely poor diagnostics and repair. I had a problem with our fireplace heater. I had used Apollo Heating several times in the past for what I thought was a similar repair. This time they were busy and I had to wait a week for an appointment. When Chris came to repair the fireplace, he took about 20 minutes to diagnose what he thought was the problem, replace a switch and charged me $136. That was about $6 for the switch and about $130 for 20 minutes of service. He at no time tested a full cycle of the heater. He got the heater to come on and he could turn it off and on manually. He never tested whether the heater would turn itself on with the thermostat and then turn itself off when the desired temperature was reached. Forty minutes after Chris left the fireplace completely shut down turning off the gas and the pilot light. I called Apollo to come back and complete their work. Chris came back and did virtually the same amount of limited testing, never letting the fireplace complete a full cycle of turning itself on and turning itself off. After about 10 minutes of incomplete testing Chris declared the fireplace repaired and left. The same thing happened again. After about 40 minutes the fireplace turned itself off again including the pilot light. I called back again and ask the person on the telephone to send someone to finish the repair. The person on the phone told me to start the pilot light myself. When I told him I couldn't, he said they would not send anyone out. I would have to find another repair company. He didn't even have the courtesy to ask why I couldn't start the pilot light. I am wheelchair bound and am not able to go onto the floor and then get back in my wheelchair without assistance. I was totally exasperated. Apollo heating has poor fireplace diagnostic skills, Charges their customers for more time than they actually spend working on your fireplace, treat their customers rudely and refuse to give any extra consideration to a person who is disabled. read more

Our heater was replaced after having ongoing issues, and then the new one had a freak issue that kept it from working as well. It was over the holidays and during an especially cold January, so we were rather miserable. Finally, the last day of 2013 I found Apollo and Chris came out with only hours of notice despite the holiday. After another repairman visited multiple times with no success, Chris identified the issue and had it fixed within an hour. They were also very professional to deal with. I called them back requesting a heads-up call before they arrived, and got one as expected despite it being a hectic day for them. Other heating repair companies I called turned me away because it was a holiday. I'm extremely grateful and would recommend using Apollo in a second. read more

our house is so so cold and the heater does not work. i live close to the beach and almost died last winter....its sad when the outside of your home feels like the inside :( i got bids from a few places and was concerned about the layout of the tubes and such. guys from other companies wanted to do what was easiest but was a. really not aesthetically pleasing and b. took up more room than it should. i mean this is such a huge investment for us and i wanted to take the time to make sure things were done right. These guys are lifesavers. Friday night our heating system conks out. It's been rainy and miserable in San Francisco all week and you do NOT want to spend days like this without heating. Called a bunch of places this morning, no one even bothers to answer their phones! Apollo wins every step of the way. * Voicemail greeting says "Leave a message and we'll call you back within the hour". They did. * In fact, they called within 20 minutes. I asked for someone to be sent out today. They said they'd have to charge time and a half (roughly $150 an hour) and gave good reasons for it. I said yes. * They were able to send someone out within hours. The person was running late, and the office called to let me know when to expect him. * Arrived on time (at the revised time), found and fixed the problem in 30 minutes. We have heat again. Call these guys first. If they can't come out, ask who they recommend. Don't just call anyone in the book. Because.... Our heater stopped working toward the end of December just as the weather was really getting cold. I woke up one morning, and the pilot light was out. I called Apollo, because they are close by, but, due to the crush of business in the cold weather, they couldn't schedule me for a week. Yikes. They suggested that I call back in a few hours to see if there were any cancellations. (Meanwhile, I called PG&E and learned it would take just over a week to come relight my furnace, if it could be lit.) When I called Apollo back they had no cancellations, but walked me through the instructions for relighting the pilot and encouraged me to try it to make sure I really needed someone to come out. With that encouragement, I attempted to relight the furnace, and was ultimately convinced that it could not be done. I resolved to wait for Apollo to come out the following week. My wife was not satisfied. She called several other companies. (I had called only one other local shop that similarly was overbooked.) Ultimately, she found someone who would come out the next day! Hooray! At least, until this company showed up. Turns out they would not perform a simple repair of my furnace because, in their opinion it would be "unsafe". They could replace the furnace for $2900-$3200 the next day. Or they could replace the entire ignition system for $1200, but they wouldn't replace the thermocouple or gas valve on my existing furnace. (The two likely causes of my problem as mentioned by Apollo in my call to them.) The only bright side: This other company didn't try to charge me for the service call. They simply wasted my time by not informing me over the phone that they wouldn't perform a simple repair on my gas heater with pilot light. Several days later, Manny, of Apollo, arrived as scheduled. He tried to light the pilot to prove to himself it couldn't be done. Then replaced the thermocouple in the space of a few minutes to discover that it was the culprit, as expected all along. A $22 part. He cleaned up the heater, sealed her up and wrote me a bill for a little under $150 bucks. Sure beats replacing the entire heater! Moral: Some people just want to sell you a new furnace. Other people are legitimately in the repair business. read more

I'll tell you, the last time my furnace failed was pre-Yelp. I got some schmuck who replaced a $75 blower that took 15 minutes to swap out and charged me $500. This time, once I realized it wasn't that blower that failed, I came to Yelp, narrowed it down to 3 companies with high ratings, and ended up having Chris from Apollo come out on a Friday afternoon last week. He was totally professional, really nice guy - got here within the appointed time, diagnosed the problem (burnt out internal 3/4 HP motor), didn't complain about the challenging location of the furnace in the basement crawl space he had to go behind to get it out of there, and apologized that it wouldn't be able to turn it around until Monday because they had to order the replacement motor. He came back Monday, replaced the motor, and we had heat. And for the same total price and a $269 motor. These guys are professionals, know how these furnaces work, are no BS, and are not going to gouge you. They are now my go-to furnace company! read more

So my 50 year old Gravity Furnace decided to take a "dump" last night during one of the coldest days so far this year. My wife and I can stand the cold, but my 17 month old baby would probably wake up during the night with the chills. Needless to say, he slept between us in our bed. I turned to Yelp, and found Apollo. I called them in the morning and they arrived at the scheduled time of 4pm to address the problem. The technician was professional and courteous. He explained that the unit itself is actually in good shape, but the generator failed. He had the parts and the installation took all but 30 minutes. I had an issue with my furnace on December 28, and I simply could not find any heating repair places that were open or answering their phones! Hello, people's furnaces still break down even if it's the holidays. Fortunately, I found Apollo via Yelp, and they were answering their phone. Apollo is a family run business, and the dispatcher (I guess the father) scheduled an appointment for the weekend. His son came out on time and expeditiously diagnosed and fixed my furnace issue. The cost was reasonable, and the service man was super friendly. It turned out I had a bird's nest in the intake vent for my furnace! Have used this family-owned business since 1986 - they have kept my ancient furnace running well. In fact I hadn't had to call in many years, and weren't sure they were still around until I "Yelped" them. Of course prices have gone up after all these years, but they are still very reasonable - and knowledgeable, prompt, and honest! Coldest spell of the year and the furnace quits in sympathy with at least half of the others in SF. It has a history of this behavior and we've used other repair services with mixed success. Apollo is obviously highly rated on Yelp and they can get here in 2 days which is better than anyone else. They get delayed for the first appointment (not too surprising when it's this busy) but call and reschedule for a little later in the day. They show up on time, very friendly, fix it in a flash, all for a reasonable price. They are my one and only from now on. read more

I tried to troubleshoot my broken heater, but was unsuccessful, so I called Apollo yesterday. The phone rep was friendly and concise. Made the appointment for today, and Chris, the repairman, was on time. He also was totally friendly, and he quickly figured out the problem and fixed it. In less than 10 minutes, I had a working heater again. It cost $100 for the visit, which seems a little high to me (but what do I know?). However, since I couldn't fix it myself, it's worth it. During the recent cold snap, we had a hard time getting someone to come work on our furnace. Apollo made an appointment, although a few cold days away. The repairman came on time, diagnosed the problem, and temporarily repaired it while he ordered a part. The part turned out to be REALLY expensive, but he sold it to us at cost. Now, we're warm and happy. It took a week and a half, a little too long when you're cold, but it got repaired well. read more
