The manager came over and asked how everything was and I proceeded to tell her what happened, and we haven't seen out waitress since we sat down 25 mins ago, and we had not had a refill on out drinks. 5 mins later our drinks show up from the waitress and said to me your food will be right out, in which i told her to keep it, and to bring the manager back over. The manager came back and said the 2 kids meals were free. I told her I just want to pay the bill. I paid and we left. Applebees service and quality of food is not consistent across all its restaurants, but the Auburn, ME location has always been a go-to on nights when I am craving a "much" drink or some good appetizers. On a Friday and Saturday night, prior to COVID, this place was always packed with guest sitting outside waiting for their name to be called. It's smaller in size compared to others, but the food for the most part is worth the wait. Staff has always been friendly and they tend to work hard because they have more tables than a typical waiter/waitress some establishments have. The pictures are from a visit in 2017, but the quality and customer service has not changed since then which is a sign management has high expectations when they hire staff. That visit I had the wonton chicken tacos for an appetizer which were good. chicken was cooked nicely and had good flavor. The slaw adds a nice crunchy texture and the use of a wonton wrapper adds additional crunch and texture to the overall experience. The key to the true success of the tacos is the squeeze of lime over each taco. It is night and day when you taste with and without. Don't forget the lime. My dinner was a chicken fried steak over mashed potatoes with a nice brown gravy, topped with onion rings. Chicken was cooked nicely with the breading slightly overcooked, but still tasty. Mashed potatoes when combined with the gravy were really good and I could have eaten more. Desert was their chocolate lava cake. This dessert was not short of chocolate in any way. You had the chocolate cake with oozing chocolate sauce with a white vanilla frosting drizzle and then they take chocolate sauce and drizzle it across the entire plate allowing you to scoop a little up with each bite. It's a major sweet bomb which will satisfy any sweet tooth. Overall, I am happy with this location, the food and its staff. I have gone back many times since the pictures, I just haven't been as active checking in or taking pictures as there are evenings where I disconnect and enjoy the human social interaction. On sept 21, 2024 at 6:30 pm I stopped into your establishment to pick up an order, I stood at the hostess station for what felt like forever as I observed ALL of your staff look at me in passing and completely ignore me. I Went to the bar and asked politely about the hostess. Bartender said someone would be right with me, that never happened. More ignoring. this is not the first time i have experienced this type of poor customer service at this location. Needless to say I left with no food. The best thing at Applebee's is the Perfect Margarita. It's where I fell in love with margaritas. Most everything else is what you would expect of a chain restaurant. The menu is huge though the food is just ok. I used to love their salads but even those have changed over time. I ordered a salad and ribs this weekend. After moving the first layer off my salad, I found rotting/slimy lettuce and several pieces of the butt end of the lettuce. The ribs were good. Our kids ordered the quesadilla hamburgers and both were disappointed. They ate them but said they wouldn't order again. Everything appeared clean and the server was friendly. Someone sitting behind us found a roach and left. This place used to be good I used to sit at the bar, dine in, get take out or order curbside but ever since I found out about the bugs and how the management is I gave up. They didn't have honey pepper chicken this night and they wouldn't let me take my alcohol Togo which they usually do but didn't have covers so we sat inside then my friend was upset their ID expired and it was their birthday and they didn't know. Never again. I'll travel and go to a different Applebees... Never had such a bad experience like the one in auburn. Our waitress DID serve every other booth in our section that sat down after us. We did not get asked for drinks, food, or have any contact with anyone besides the hostess for almost a half hour. I am unsure of why this occurred because we literally had no contact with anyone in the building, despite the fact that there was barely any customers there and there was plenty of staffing. Something is very wrong with this place. It is clear that there is a big attitude/organizational issue at this location that honestly feels and looks more like a dive bar. The bartender gives you lip just for a simple request for condiments.Here is a tip: just do your job or move over for someone that actually has pride for his or her job, you don't have to scare away customers with your personal problems. I will be routing this to upper regional management. Sadly the memories of a great neighborhood bar are looooong gone at this location. This is what one would expect from a large chain restaurant that probably tries to serve its investors more than its customers. Not to say it is bad, it really isn't. I thought the fish and chips were good. My girlfriend ordered well done steak, it was somewhat raw in the middle. She only ate about half of it. I would have sent it back, but she is not like that. The fries were a bit on the soggy side. Other times I have visited I notice they like to go heavily on pasta with meatless sauce, as it makes your meal look bigger and costs them very little. Rice is another popular plate filler. What you have is a place, while certainly not cheap, won't kill your budget either. And it is a good place to go from time to time. I like the pay at your table feature using a tablet style device. This same device is also designed for you to spend money on games to keep you occupied while waiting for your order. I have never had slow service at Applebee's, and no desire to play tablet games you can play at home for free. But if it adds a few dollars to the profit, it only makes the company stronger, right? It's been a while since I've been to an Applebee's. I think the last time was when I was in college in western Massachusetts, and a steak I had at the Applebee's in South Hadley blew me away. I'm a sucker for nostalgia, so I decided to go by myself for dinner on a Friday night. Had no trouble getting a seat when I walked in around 7:30-8, but the restaurant was humming with people. Service throughout was friendly and fast. I got the 8-ounce sirloin with steamed broccoli and garlic mashed potatoes, and a French onion soup to start. The soup was fine--basically what I expected for French onion soup from Applebee's. Not too salty, with the taste of generic Swiss cheese on top. Coulda spent a little more time under broiler, if you ask me, but that's a personal preference. The steak, which I ordered medium rare, came out just as I pushed my soup bowl away. Which would have been great timing, except that it turns out that the meat was more of a rare and so needed to go back to the kitchen for a couple more minutes. How did I know it was underdone? It seems that it is standard practice at Applebee's (or at least at this one) for the servers to ask you when they bring you your steak: "Do you mind cutting in the middle of that and taking a peek? I just want to make sure it's cooked properly." I heard that question posed to at least one other diner in addition to myself. One way to interpret it is as a sign of caring service. The other, of course, would be that the kitchen doesn't know how to cook steak to the desired doneness without cutting it open--which seems troubling. Either way, by the time the steak came back out the magic was gone. I finished my meal and left, disappointed, with fading memories of that fantastic steak in Massachusetts. Dinner was definitely not worth $24 (including tip), and I think next time I'm craving steak I'll just head to Longhorn down the road. read more

The definition of a bad visit! The hostess was definitely not happy about her job. We had to approach her just to have her turn her back on us while she figured out where to seat us. We we're seated right beside the hostess stand which is right at the door. Not a spot to be during the winter in Maine! Our waitress was great. Completely the opposite of the hostess! The food..... Poor at best. Ordered a burger "see pink" it was well done to say the least! The lettuce was basically the hard white core. Ordered onion rings in place of fries. This was my first time eating here and the experience wasn't too shabby. I went out on a date with my boyfriend and he raved about this place so I said why not. Well we went during dinner rush, and surprisingly only had about a 15 minute wait. I've certainly waited much longer at other restaurants. The service was really nice as well. Our waitress was so polite and even during rush hour she made sure we were well waited on. Also, the restaurant was lovely. Comfortable seating and a nice atmosphere overall. Good for family dinners, dates, and/or nights out with friends. They also of course have a bar. Now it is a chain so I'm assuming food wise they're all pretty similar. I ordered the chicken freshcado and it was absolutely amazing. It was cooked perfectly too! My boyfriend ordered a steak and I'm not sure exactly what. Now I hate steak but he insisted I tried it because "its too delicious not to." Well you know how I said I hated steak? I actually enjoyed that bite I had of it! It was really good. The dessert was also too good to pass on. We both had the triple chocolate meltdown and if you love chocolate I highly suggest you get it!
