If you are staying in the former Meat Packing district when visiting Copenhagen you will see several places to eat, but not many are dine-in and/or open later in the evening. Fortunately, this place offers dine-in and they are open a bit late. They have indoor and outdoor seating and a bar area. Plus, they have an entire area across the street in the middle park area for more outdoor dining. It is a nice place to sit and just relax with a few drinks after a day of playing tourist. I/we really enjoyed the vibe and the atmosphere. The staff is friendly, but overall the service is slow...and your server may change without notice. Everything seemed like it took forever--and I don't like being thirsty especially. As for the food...the garlic bread appetizer was quite tasty. The chicken pasta and mushroom pasta dishes were good, but keep the salt & pepper handy. I normally travel with a small bottle of hot sauce "just in case", but I forgot it...if you do this too, bring it! The big plus about this place is that they are open late and have dine-in in this area. If you don't want to eat...great...I do think this is a nice place to just order a drink and maybe an appetizer (or dessert) to just chill after a long day. Apropos is within walking distance of a lot of different hotels in the area. However, the metro/subway station isn't far...maybe 300 meters of walking distance. This place was our plan b after we got turned away from the Thai place around the corner for not having a reservation (it was 5pm and there were only a small handful of other customers in their empty restaurant, but whatever), so in a pouring rainstorm, we turned the corner and decided to try this place out. It's apparently much more known for breakfast and brunch, though they did also have a dinner menu. I ordered chicken risotto, BFF got their grilled chicken over veggies entree. Both were OK, nothing less, nothing more. We should have known it might be this way from the relatively limited dinner menu they had (that were on very worn pieces of paper attached to a clip board). This place wasn't bad per se, but given other options, we'd probably try those other options out before we'd come back here - for dinner, anyway, since they did seem to cater more to breakfast and brunch. read more

Ended up here after a recommended restaurant had a two hour wait just for the bar.... The place was full and very busy. I think I remarked to the waiter that we were packed in there like sardines. Nonetheless, we were able to enjoy a dinner of steak and hamburgers, cooked to our specifications. Also, the waiter was able to get me a cocktail based upon my preferences. Me and a buddy ordered an omelette and some other small dishes. The omelet was well made with chicken, bacon, tomatoes and some spinach. A very delicious detail was the melted cheddar on the top. I think the omelette was made half on a pan and half in the oven. The service itself was fair and quick, but nothing notably special. We wanted to find a nice place for lunch with family near the central train station, and decided to try Cafe Apropos. Everyone had a great meal al fresco. I had the club sandwich, which was a substantial upgrade from the standard American version featuring a delicious curry sauce, hearty ciabatta, perfectly cooked chicken, and of course the world's finest bacon. Not exactly a traditional Danish menu, but what we had here was good. The menu is a little limited, unfortunately, but they had a couple steak options, a couple burger options, and a couple fish/chicken/pasta options. I went with a steak, thinking that I might be disappointed, but it was quite good. Done properly with a very nice rich wine/mushroom sauce, and served with little cylinders of potato with a crisp outside. Very enjoyable. They also played Michael Jackson pretty much the entire evening. I am not kidding or exaggerating - they basically just plowed through the greatest hits from the moment we came in. Went here on a Friday night. The place was packed and very energetic. This is the center of the "old" red light district in Copenhagen. The ambience is a mixture of bar and cosy food. We came here for dinner on a Friday night when our original place's kitchen was closing. The atmosphere is lively, the food is good if fairly uninspired, and the service is on par with an Applebee's in terms of attitude and attention, alternating between frat-house greetings and hate-your-very-existence friendliness. For dinner, we had the risotto and Danish specialty, pariser bøf. The latter was more interesting flavor-wise than the former, but both weren't representative of the standards you'd expect from the price and high-end vibe the place tries to aim for. Total bill for two with beer/cider was 355 DKK (or about $55). If you're looking for a quick dinner late and are in the area, this will do the trick. I was walking around and found this cozy place with a lot of people sitting outside, so gave it a try, despite the lower ratings. I was pleasantly impressed. I ordered the chèvre chaud (goat cheese salad) and it was delicious. The hint of anise with the apples and pickled beets were a perfect compliment to the goat cheese. Loved the bread that was served. Took an hour to get the food. The kids fell asleep. Risotto was good. My wife had Greek salad that was a bag of ica-salad mixed with a tiny, dry piece of chicken. My daughter had entrecote that was burnt in the edges and my sons fried fish looked like it came defrosted out of a box. When I asked for a second glass of wine I got the same Shiraz as before even though I asked for a different kind. The Risotto again though, was good. The restaurant is quaint and clean, but service is inefficiently SLOW; but blamed on being crowded. Maybe, this could almost be acceptable because it was Pride weekend. However, after waiting for over 1 hour, my friend was told her omlette order was not available. Lucky for her she had tomatoe soup appetizers. I ordered nachos as an appetizer, and hamburger with fries along with a Margarita. My friend had a scrumptious garlic bread appetizer. The fries tasted as though the we're made from scratch, and not at all greasy. Yum! The well done burger was quite tasty with a tasty reddish-orange sauce/condiment. The bun/bread, that I might normally discard tasted like a freshly baked English muffin of sorts that didn't leave your tummy bloated. The Margarita could have used a little more lime. Oh, although this was a bar/restaurant, restless children were present in this adult like atmosphere. The stairway to the bathroom, are steep, narrow, with a slight spiral. The bathroom is not well-lit, think extreme energy efficient; and one stall was broken with water on the floor. So, the 3 stars captures the meal and the experience. This is one of those places that looks like it could be mediocre. It's a big place and it has sort of a corporate or tourist trap look. But, once you're seated and partake of the drinks and food you realize they know what they're doing. The service could be faster and more responsive. The wait staff seems to be young and not well trained. The kitchen, however, did s great job on our dishes. I ordered a beef stroganoff dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the beef was tender and the sauce tied it all together with a creamy beef-based tang. My wife and our friend ordered the chicken mushroom risotto, which they said was rich, flavorful, full bodied and savory. My wife described it as almost like a chicken pot pie. I should also note they know how to make a really good classic cocktail. I took a chance and ordered an Old Fashioned and it was very nicely mixed. Apropos is located not far from the Central train station. The surrounding neighborhood is a bit hit and miss, but once your here you'll have a good time. My mother and I went to Apropos for the past Saturday and Sunday nights. Tonight was Monday and I went with a friend. We had great service and great food the first two nights (from Frederic and some of the ladies, not Daria) which were both quite busy. Tonight though, was terrible "McDonalds level" service by Daria, the waitress. What was embarrassing was I had taken a friend there and had talked the restaurant up immensely for the past two days. Daria initially brought water over but she brought over the large water with lime which is charged for by the restaurant. The two previous nights we had been served the small waters which we did not have to pay for as they are tap water and free. Once asked to serve the small water which is not charged for, Daria still did not bring a "small water" that other tables also had on their table, but she simply brought a large water without lime. Embarrassed at the situation, I waited until my friend went to the restroom to ask Daria about the cost. When I flagged her down and specified my request for the free water and my concern that I would be charged,she seemed very put off, and somewhat flustered, she said that she would not charge for the large water (she also didn't bother to refill it at this time though it was only about 1/4 full). That was the last time she appeared at the table. It seemed like she had brought the lime water without being asked in order to pad the bill, and seemed disappointed or upset when I made her take it off. It went downhill from there. She never came by to fill the water or my friend's coke, never brought salt and pepper (which really had complimented the risotto the past two nights...it wasn't the same without it), and simply never returned. If I was not with a friend, I would have been more vocal. When Daria did come near the table she did make eye contact with me and she would turn and walk away. Daria seemed to go out of her way to make eye contact just to turn away. When I "waived" at her, she would smile and then turn away. It clearly appeared to both me and my friend, that she was intentionally avoiding giving us service. As an American, even in a non-tipping culture like Denmark, I tip pretty well (as I had the two previous evenings at Apropos). Daria's facial expression seemed miffed when she realized that I didn't tip her a cent. After I returned to my hotel and told my mother about the situation, she was upset. We called twice asking for a manager, and the second time were told he would be there in about an hour. My mother asked me if we could go back there and talk with the Manager, Jam. When we arrived Jam wasn't there and the waitresses said they did not know when he would be back so we talked with two other waitresses (one of which had waited on us before) and also Daria. They listened. Then they explained that (1) it really was "not Daria's fault" because it was "busy" and it was only the three of them on that night. In the area I sat, it was the same area we had been in the past two nights, and this was a Monday night......tonight I only noticed people at 2 other tables in my section and both of them left while me and my friend were there. When my mother and I were there Saturday and Sunday it was actually very busy, yet somehow we received amazing service both nights (2) Daria admitted never returning to my table (for further service). She stated that she never returned after dropping off the food but in fact, one of the other waitresses standing there said she had delivered the food to the table, and Daria admitted it once I called her on it to her face in front of the other waitresses. (3) No one offered an apology of any kind, just excuses for Daria. (4) The waitresses were relatively polite and patient, yet kept defending her regardless of fact and logic. (5) It was as if when the two other waitresses were there, Daria was demure. When no one was there to oversee her, she was smug and arrogant. She started crying what were clearly crocodile tears. (6) We spent a couple of hundred dollars over a three day period. I am thinking of relocating to Copenhagen for a few months and had been so excited to find a new favorite restaurant. Now I will never go back. How much money do you think I would have spent in 6 months of living there? My friend already lives in Copenhagen, and also likely will never be back. (7) If you choose to come here, order the risotto, it tastes amazing. But make sure you ask your waitress's name, and if it is Daria ask to change sections. (8) If you are in Copenhagen and want delicious food AND great service, skip Apropos and head over to the Union Kitchen in Nyhaven. Daria truly did her employer a disservice, because her subpar behavior and attitude reflects poorly on what I thought was a great restaurant. read more
