This place is an absolute gem! The service was incredible from the moment I stepped inside being greeted by Andrea. The ambiance and decor is GORGEOUS. Greenery for days, ambient lighting, beautiful countertops and tabletops. It feels luxurious but in a non-pretentious way. The owner and chef Penny designs not only the menu but the space as well. The food is beautifully crafted- presentation and taste. You MUST get the Smoked Salmon Pimento dip. Might as well order 2 because you'll want more and more! (Penny, please never take this off the menu!) The service was divine. Travis took such good care of us! He recommended dishes and beverages, basically knowing what we wanted before we said anything. I have been there before and it has been a great experience. However this last time was not the same. Food excellent, our waiter excellen, management was there walking around drinking from a bottle of champagnes passing it around to other employees. I was watching the fifa match which they charge you gratuity for it. Stated in the bill. They blocked the TV by standing in front of it and did not care I was watching. Won't go back again. Stopped in for lunch during restaurant week, and so glad I did. The menu is unique, many variations of Thai fusion and seafood. The lobster Rangoon smaller in size with a flavor impact. The jumbo was great, not too strong of a heat to it. For the course we had the red curry duck, a great blend of curry flavor, the right amount of heat with a little bit of sweetness with the pineapples. Will definitely be coming back. Still kinda Thai but I liked it! Having been to bamboo penny's across the street I thought, hey, let's try aqua penny's. I sure am glad I did. The restaurant is really nice and upscale inside. It has super comfy chairs and booths and had a clean, modern aesthetic that suits the location really well. It's right next door to Aloft hotel in park place, and since my office is just across the street at Aspiria it was easy to find and the parking garage was super empty the night I went. My waiter was super helpful and had some really good recommendations as I have never been here before. There was a slight mixup in my order but I think it worked out for the better. So, all's well that ends well. The food was good. I didn't get what I ordered, but what I got was delicious. There was a special on the appetizer menu for fried oysters and French fries, but I got bbq oysters. The oysters were in the ballpark of chargrilled oysters you get in NOLA. Not exactly but similar enough, you know, butter, cheese, probably a little garlic and seasoning, very good. The oysters were tasty, although pretty expensive, and I only got 5. I don't know if this odd numbered food items is a KC thing or what but 6 please! I mean I can get a dozen in NOLA for just a couple dollars more. I know, I know, it's KC and we have to ship them in, but still. Since I didn't get the French fries I ordered the duck fat fries to go with my bbq oysters and they were good. You could really taste the duck fat, but it wasn't overpowering. The fries were crispy, but maybe a touch too much salt for my taste. All in all very good. I also splurged and got the waffle dumplings. They are veggie dumplings and were probably my favorite thing. Crispy and delicious. They are pressed and have the waffle pattern on them, hence the name. A lot of the menu is very Thai fusion, which makes sense, but be aware that it's not just a seafood place like the Bristol or Ocean Prime. Kinda pricey! My meal was $50 not including my drink, which was just a soda, so not the cheapest place in town, but I get it, this is the Midwest and seafood has to be shipped in to get it fresh and that ain't cheap. It was very good though, probably a 4.3 out of 5. A little less salt, one more oyster and I could definitely see this at a 4.8! Sorry no pics. I stupidly left my phone in the car, and I wasn't walking back to get it. Just imagine oysters and French fries in your head and you'll know what it looked like. I'm in love with their Lobster Ragoon's! They brung out a sample of their spicy sauces and rub but I didn't think to snap a photo. Loved their dry rub! Not for the weak. We asked for Christina, who is our favorite server at Aqua Penny's. She was amazing again! Just like always. We brought friends tonight. They are longtime KC residents and hadn't been to one of Penny's restaurants yet. They loved it! They started out with the calamari as an appetizer and my wife and I had the Tom Yum soup. I also enjoyed the Great White oysters and a Boston Pearl. Delicious!! For dinner, my wife had the blackened shrimp which she loved. I had the Mango Catfish as did our male friend. It was very good!! Come to this cute, cozy , garden ambiance restaurant for a yelp event. I've heard of this place from dinning at their sister location Bamboo Penny's. I'm SO glad I was able to try this place out. They have a wide variety of food options on their menu, a little bit of everything. I will definitely be back for a date night or a girls night out. They also offer outdoor seating, which is a plus for me, definitely something to look forward to when it gets warmer. I had dinner reservations elsewhere so I kept it light here. I ordered a Paloma mock-tail in place of the sangria, and man oh MAN was it amazing! 10/10 If you're a grapefruit person like me then this is the drink for you. It was very refreshing and flavorful , Joe the bartender did a great job. The lobster Rangoon was spot on 10/10, the oyster where a 7/10 2 of the 4 I ordered has a weird taste to them. We have enjoyed Bamboo Penny's so as seafood lovers, were excited to try their new seafood Thai concept. Started with their signature Negroni, quite delicious and much better than a regular Negroni. They have several cocktails on batch, and this was one. Once seated, our group opted to share several appetizers, all delicious. The entire group was pleased with the entire meal and had no room for dessert. The restaurant set up is a big reason I didn't give 5 stars. Tables are very close together and we were bumped many times by wait staff attending to another table. It's also very modern, not very homey. She wanted to hit up happy hour (3-6 pm) to get a feel for this seafood-focused restaurant she learned of from TikTok. We arrived during its last hour. Dinner reservations were 2.5 hours later, but why not? A free parking garage is located one block away. Interior was nice, clean and sunny. We sat ourselves in the bar area with its hightop tables. We were quickly welcomed and menus were delivered. She ordered the cocktail of the week which was made with cachaça, a Brazilian alcoholic beverage. I had sangria. It was good and not too sweet, but I desired more acidity. Her drink was interesting and good, too. She had oysters and we shared the shrimp cocktail, lobster Rangoon and mussels. This spot had been on my list since it opened last summer. Located across the street from Penny Mukua's first restaurant, Bamboo Penny's, in Park Place, Aqua Penny's does not disappoint. They've totally changed the decor from the old Gordon Biersch restaurant. The decor is light and airy and romantic. I dined for lunch during Kansas City Restaurant Week, While it's a pricier price point of $40, the 3 course lunch was delicious. I stated with the lobster Rangoon, a play on Chinese crab Rangoon. The 3 Rangoon came with a sweet chili sauce. The dough was light and crispy filled with creamy cream cheese. I couldn't really taste the lobster but it had a good flavor. Next course I had the salad - a traditional house salad with house made green goddess dressing. Yum. My friend had the hot and sour soup - she said it was also delicious. Final course: I had the fish and chips. A walleye fillet on a brioche bun with house made vinegar chips. You can choose between blackened or fried. I splurged and had mine fried. The batter was light and very crispy. It's probably one of the best fish sandwiches I've had in the city. My friend had the stir fry with tofu. It was a small portion - she said it was good. Had a nice date night at Aqua Penny's during the start of restaurant week. It was pretty busy inside, but we made an online reservation and were seated promptly. They also have complimentary valet parking! Loved the interior - dimly lit but not dark, touches of aqua blue décor, and plush seats (the ones we sat in anyway). For the first course, we ordered the Lobster Rangoons and Fresh House Oysters. Lobster rangoons were just okay. Didn't taste too much different from regular crab rangoons, and the sauce was no different. The fresh house oysters on the other hand were great! We were surprised at how fresh they were, and we enjoyed it with the lemon, house made cocktail sauce, champagne mignonette, & a little bit of the horseradish. Next, for the second course, we got the Louisiana Style Gumbo and Penny's Hot & Sour Soup. Louisiana Style Gumbo was good, but nothing special. I understand some places will give smaller portions during restaurant week, yet having just two shrimp in this dish was a bit of a letdown. This gumbo dish was maybe four bites. Anyway, the hot and sour soup was delicious. Very clean, not too spicy, and tasty. It may not look like much, but there was a lot of tofu, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and egg packed in there. Moving on to the third course, we chose the Grilled Strip Loin Steak with Cognac Crème and Red Curry Duck. Steak came medium-rare upon selection, and it was cooked to perfection! Really tender with great taste. It was served with sautéed green beans and mashed potatoes. Both complimented the steak well! The Red Curry Duck was our waiter's recommendation, and it did not disappoint. The duck was cooked well, the pineapples & bell peppers balanced the dish, and the curry was flavorful. We ended the evening with the fourth and final course: Key Lime Cheesecake and Crème Brulée Cheesecake. I'm not a huge fan of cheesecake, so my husband enjoyed these more than me. Our service throughout the night was very quick and friendly. Aqua Penny's is upscale JoCo through and through: fancy modern decor, mood lighting, and a raw bar with oysters and caviar. We ordered the Boston Tear Drops oysters, Thai basil wings, Chinese broccoli, and red curry duck. All were solidly delicious and flavorful, perfect for us at a medium spice level. The standout was the Chinese broccoli, which had a perfectly savory and spicy flavor. We also ordered seasonal cocktails and enjoyed. I will say the prices seem elevated at Aqua Penny's, perhaps because of the upscale decor and experience, and maybe a bit high for the portion size and quality. We don't spend a lot of money on dining out usually, but this was a special night. First, their drink menu in general from mixed drinks to their wine list to the bourbon list were impressive. The food was presented beautifully and was so good. I had the mango catfish and my husband had their pad tai. We were both pleased. We didn't have room for dessert, but will check it out another time. The service matched their incredible menu and atmosphere. Is it expensive? Depends on what you are looking for. I want to preface my review by saying that the food was delicious and the hostess and our server were lovely. The downgrade in stars is for management/ownership. This begins months ago when my husband and I visited for lunch while I was pregnant. At the time we were given an envelope that said "do not open, bring back in March for a prize." I asked at the time if March was a hard deadline as that was when I was due and didnt see myself coming in the first month after giving birth. I was assured that March was the start of the prize timeline and that we could come in anytime between March and the deadline on the envelope which was November 30. Fast forward to this month, we came back in with our envelope. They opened it tableside and we had gotten a $50 off a $100 purchase coupon. The server was like great let me get this over to the manager for redemption and took our order. Keeping that in mind the table ordered to ensure we hit the $100 needed to take advantage of the coupon. We ordered an appetizer, the lobster Rangoon which is delicious and a fun spin on the traditional crab Rangoon. For my entree I ordered the crab cakes which did not come with a side, so I also ordered duck fat fries and to be honest I never want to eat any other kind of fry. Also while small, the crab cake were tasty and all crab with no extra fillers. By the time we finished our meal, the manager had come over. She asked us about the coupon we brought in. She insisted that we were supposed to have come in in March to have it "authenticated" and since we hadn't it wasn't valid. I explained to her that I had asked when I was given the envelope and that it would have been impossible for me to come during that time. She was firm in that we could not use it and said she had checked higher up (not sure if thats a higher manager or an owner), but that she would "authenticate" it for us now and we could come back in the next couple days before it expired to use it. It really doesn't make sense that we couldn't use it that day, but could come back and use it. It was a very confusing and frustrating conversation especially after ordering. Started with lobster Rangoon and a few oysters on the half shell. Happy hour pricing was nice. For my entree it was the Seafood Pad Kee Mow. Ok, so this is a vveerrrry delayed review (like seriously, we came for a yelp thing like in...February and its now June) but here's hoping I get everything covered! Both times we came we were so well taken care of! Our first server was helpful with our food order...but ALSO with maybe figuring out how to overcome our dogs massive fear of all sky booms. The 2nd was just a great conversationalist and made it jus a fun time! It's always great when you feel taken care of AND have fun conversations without feeling like they are hovering! As far as the food goes...look the menu changed (and there was seasonal stuff so I'm gonna try my best) but here's what we've ordered: - golden nests (fried wonton shrimp goodness, kinda wished for more) -hush puppies (they aren't on the menu anymore as far as I can tell online) -calamari (is it weird that we really liked eating the fried jalepnos more?) -fire-roasted peppers and octopus (sooo sooo good!) -oysters....rockerfeller (again not on the menu, but very good!) -Pad Thai -Seafood and Saffron (OMG sooooo fucking good - I wanted to swim in the broth!) -Red Crab Curry (sooooooo crabby!!!) -fried (cat)fish with mango salsa thing (I kept stealing bites from boyfriends plate even when I shouldn't have) The cocktails were also pretty damn good! Lettuce wraps had soo much lime juice and or citrus that is all you could taste. $9 Asparagus comes out cold, yellowish and dried up. (Looked like it was pretty old) We had gumbo and it was void of seafood but filled with sausage. Not a good look. Also not great flavor for gumbo. Nest of Joy meh was a ball of fried rice and sauce was there to save it. Crab cakes were fairly good but thin and bland. Lobster rolls were lobster rolls, hard to mess those up. We LOVED it! The food was so good. The oysters were tiny but plump and had great flavor. A little briny and a little sweet. I had ordered the Halibut with risotto and asparagus thinking that it was going to be your run of the mill sautéed fish with lemon butter and hubby ordered the Chick Pad Thai. I was so wrong about the Halibut! It was amazing flavorful! Salty sweet with a little heat. So different and so delicious it was.
