arandas bakery is a good bakery for pan dulce, marranitos, bolillos, and the large jelly cookies. you have to come at curtain times of the day because things do run out, or may be waiting for certain bakery items depending what your looking for. i would have to say the the pan bolillos are my favorite you hit a red button for hot and fresh rolls that come down a shoot into a bin which is cool, i take these rolls home and use them to make breakfast and lunch sandwhiches or just plain by it self, the rolls only last less then 2 days most and the freshness of the bread is not there. my kiddos love the marranitos we try and grab a few but these are one of arnandas popular bakery items and they sell fast and run out and several times i have to deal with not having to get any. my wife loves their pan dulce shes crazy for them, and the large jelly cookies are delicious as well, cookies are not dry and they crumble when you have a bite into them they are awesome. they also have turnovers (empanadas), conchas, churros, fresh tortillas alot to choose from. if this is your first time i would definitly get some pan bolillos and try the marranitos. read more

I came for Mother's Day and this Monday 5/22 for a birthday cake and both times both cakes were $35 for a 1/4 sheet with $10 extra for natural strawberry inside. Today I came to order another cake done the same way and price is now $60 for same cake. Manager came over and nothing was solved supposedly they've been charging wrong but I asked for the cake the same way I got it last 2 times because this is a "personalized" cake but last 2 we're done the same way. Arandas has some bomb-a conchas. Their small- to medium-sized conchas are probably the most fluffy, spongey and flavorful conchas I've ever had (even better than El Bolillo). They have a wonderful bouncy to them. Like colorful, carby pillows. read more

I'm here visiting and saw this place since I'm from Mexico, I had to check it out. Firstly, this place HORRIBLE. I've never smelled a bakery smell so bad. I should've left simply because of that. I purchased a simple concha and so did my husband. And I brought back to the hotel and the bread smelled EXACTLY like the store horrible. There was no sweet delicious smell from the bread. The bread itself was mediocre, at best. I couldn't finish it nor could my husband. It was boring, plain, and again the smell. Arandas Bakery gave me 2 cakes that were the wrong flavor (and honestly way too sweet, should have just gone with a Costco cake and I will be doing so in the future. Paid $120 bucks and they would only offer me $7 dollars back. I was on the other side of town running errands and realized that I was close to this iconic Houston bakery. As ashamed as I am to admit, this was my first time visiting an Arandas Bakery. I grew up on their Taqueria Arandas, but I had never had their bakery products. The storefront has that Arandas signature to it. The tile roofing, the peach like colored stucco exterior. The inside is spacious. They have trays that you use along with tongs to select the variety of the Pan Dulce offerings. They also have a special event section where you would order cakes for birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc. There is also a refrigerated section that offers Mexican sodas, American sodas, milk and juices. They do have a pretty big variety of Pan Dulce. You will find your usual Conchas, Maranitos and Turnovers here along with the harder to find Ojos, Marielas and Yoyos. During my visit, I selected some of the staples and the harder to find ones. Here are my thoughts: Maranitos - I think this one disappointed me the most. Maranitos are supposed to have a strong molasses flavor and are supposed to be between soft and hard. The ones I tried today, were so dry that they were crunchy. The flavor was off and it had next to no molasses flavor. In fact, I found these to be overly sweet. Conchas - Again, dry and way too firm. The streusel topping is made with margarine/shortening because it sticks to the roof of your mouth. If it were made with butter or a butter blend...the texture wouldn't be sticky, but more melt in your mouth. Margarine/Shortening has a higher melting point compared to butter and this is what yields that texture. The flavor was okay, but it lacked the rich Brioche like quality of a good Concha. Ojos - Ojos are typically a Pan Dulce that is round. It has two parts to it: the crunchy ring that surrounds the circumference of the circle and the softer cake like center. I was starting to get the feeling that Arandas Bakery doesn't really like to flavor their breads. These Ojos were bland, flat and the center was chewy. Galleta con Chocolate Sprinkles - Basically a cookie topped mini chocolate chips. This was probably the best of what I ordered. It was soft and sweet enough. Overall, I am very disappointed. I had higher hopes for Arandas Bakery. Most of what I had was dry, bland and overly sweet. They do have wonderful customer service and a down home ambiance. I am skeptical that I will try them again any time soon. read more

I'm mad that I have to write this review because I was a regular customer at this place. I realized today that the inevitable happened. Why is it that when a business is doing good they have to mess it up by being greedy? I purchased 27 dollars worth of bread and it would of been 34 dollars but I decided to leave some of my bread because I was being charged for little box containers that I requested because I didn't want my cake to mess up and loose all its icing in the bag thrown in there with the rest of the bread. At 1 dollar per piece of cake I thought for sure I could request a container to keep it in a whole piece and with icing, when I got home. Anyways I guess business must be really bad for them because apparently the employees have strict instructions about not giving a small container to anybody for free even if they are purchasing 30 something dollars worth of bread. I buy empanadas in bulk numbers for community meetings the office hosts, and they are always well received. I've been there twice now and I love it. The food: I had their pan dulces a long time and ago, and I'm just never a fan of pan dulce so I didn't like it here either. BUT I've been getting the empanadas for work, and theyre yummy. I order the pina, the cheese, and the camote (sweet potato) ones. The camote is my favorite. All are always soft and fresh. GREAT PRICES & FRESH The Service: really could be better. over the phone, they're rude and good luck finding something that a) speak clearly and b)speaks english well. In-store, the impression is better, but not great. they are all bare minimum friendly, and pretty slow. They take their time to do everything, so be careful about going there when you're in a time crunch. Sometimes the bakery smells weird, but I'm usually in and out so dont care, and the empanadas are so good that I let the smell go. If you have a big order, they'll make you come in and make it in person, which i think is crazy. luckily it's on my way to other places so I didn't mind too much that i had to go in. read more

Choco flan had just the right level of sweetness and the contrast between the chocolate cake and the flan was sublime. I ordered a plain 3 tier "wedding" cake for cake for my grandson's wedding. I showed them a picture of the cake the way I wanted it to be decorated. The picture just showed butterflies on it. I was furnishing the butterflies. I ordered the butterflies. Once I received the butterflies I took them to the bakery and they said they thought that they would work. The butterflies were supposed to be edible and the package could not be opened until they were ready to go on the cake. The day of the wedding the bakery called and said that there were not enough butterflies and could they add some flowers. I agreed, but was very nervous about the cake as my grandson and his bride were having a "simple" wedding. The cake was beautiful!! I wish I could post a picture of the cake. And it tasted good too. The only reason I gave one star is because I had to choose one. I came here on 12/30/2014 to order a cake for my niece's birthday for the following day. I was told by the attendant "Liz" that they will be open on New Year's Eve until 10p.m. it sounded odd being that most of the stores close earlier but I went by what she said. I came to pick up the cake around 6:30p.m. or so and they were already closed. I couldn't believe what was happening. I had people waiting on the cake even my little niece was super excited. I couldn't just go home without a cake so I had to run to many stores to see if I could buy one already made until I was able to find a store open. The next day, I came to Arandas Bakery to get a refund because I was given wrong information (which I think workers should really pay attention to the information given to customers as we all depend on it) and I spoke with "Hector Flores" supposely the GM and we were told that we couldn't get a refund. I explained him it wasn't our fault that his employees were not trained correctly and had given wrong information. Throughout the conversation, he repeated that they had advertised their holiday hours on the radio, tv, and even posted on the store doors. I asked if I should not believe their word and he pretty much said "correct". I am really disappointed at the service given by "Hector" which was not apologic at all. He doesn't know how to provide real customer service or follow the proper procedure when a problem arise. I will not return or give my business to this Arandas Bakery ever again! read more
