They are not the cheapest vet but that's not what I want; I want a vet where modern veterinary medicine is available and the doctors are highly skilled. Positives: the vet, is knowledgeable and explains options thoroughly. I did not feel pressured into getting all recommended services. The vet tech we had was also kind and gentle with my pet. Negatives: they are more expensive than other places. My pets have had different vets in the Bay Area due to moving and this was the most expensive vet. (Side note:Gentle care Vet in Hayward offers the most fair prices and has board certified surgeons). Also, the prices are not transparent. We had procedures completed 2weeks ago and spent a couple thousand and was told to return in 2 weeks for a free follow up. We came in and the "free" follow up was $75, we were told there was some error and the doctor should not have said that and we were charged $75. We initially left because we were told it was free but they called us to come back because the doctor does not have the authority to say a follow up is free and we could pay over the phone but it would cost even more. We ended up going back in to pay, but it was inconvenient. We should have been told of the payment during the appointment. This was all because of a communication error between the schedulers and vet teams. Watch out for pricing issues, be sure to get a quote for every visit before going and make sure you know that services after 6pm have a 30% up charge as well as a $200 emergency fee. I took some time to write this after the actual incident to give Archvet time to make it right (which never happened) and just to get my thoughts clear. My dog stayed with Archvet on Winchester for about 6 days. Side note: I'm a dog groomer and I'm constantly doing health checks on my dog because I know how important it is to know your dog is healthy and to catch anything early on if anything looks weird or off. When I picked up my dog after her stay, no one could tell me how much she ate. No one could tell me if she ate that night. They returned some of her food to me as if she didn't eat 2 or 3 meals, but couldn't tell me when. Then I get home, do my normal nightly health check on my pup and see she has a broken tooth.. yes. A broken tooth! I immediately call Archvet to get answers and of course they say anything and everything possible to keep the blame off of them. I know I didn't drop my dog off with a broken tooth. I also never got an answer to why the tooth next to the broken tooth looks cleaned/brushed! (Photo attached) What exactly happened that caused that? Still no answer today. Then tried to quote me almost 4k for a cleaning and "free tooth removal". I found an amazing vet, Warm Springs Animal Hospital in Fremont that has amazing pricing for dental work. They removed the broken tooth and my dog is finally pain free and happy as could be thanks to Warm Springs. I will never be back to Archvet on Winchester, and I highly advise you go else where for any and all vet services if you care about your pets. read more

ARCHVET Emergency Hospital - They try to claim it didn't happen there when I do daily health checks on my dog and I didn't drop her off with a broken tooth. - Veterinarians Near Me - San Jose, California

Front desk (Fi) is very nice and professional. An extra star for that. Vet tech was very nice and friendly up until we asked to have one of the prescriptions written out to be filled elsewhere. The prices here are astronomical. Medication is literally 10x the cost of getting the same meds on chewy. We were charged over $130 (with a senior discount) for pain meds that would be $10 at chewy. They wanted an extra 109 dollars for an "ocular exam" to give us a better idea of what may be wrong. When coming in for an eye emergency one would think an ocular (eye) exam would be what you get as part of the $200 after hours appointment fee. The vet also wanted to sedate the dog to do a more in depth exam which wound be many hundreds of dollars more (because the dog would need blood tests before the sedation). That's not including an ultrasound ($900) which may be needed as part of that exam. The fact that medication costs literally ten times more than it would elsewhere and there seemed to be some hesitation before providing us with a script to fill elsewhere plus the outrageous estimates for what procedures would cost gives the sense that this is a corporately owned money making factory. (Though we did appreciate that an estimate for further tests was provided upon request before we went beyond the regular non in-depth exam.) We did also appreciate that the vet gave us a prescription for pain medication and in retrospect it's obvious we should have asked for a day's worth and to have the rest of the script filled somewhere (anywhere!) else. Not doing this cost us well over $100 extra. If you must go to this hospital definitely do not get the medications they prescribe filled at their office and do expect everything to be many times more expensive than it would be at a regular vet and even more expensive than at a highly reputable place (known to be pricey) like Sage. Definitely wish we had gone to Sage or MedVet as I also believe their vet could probably do an in depth exam without adding hundreds of dollars for sedation. read more

I have been taking my dog here for nail trims for about 1 year. They are the only place (including professional groomers) that can cut my dog's nails! They really put in special effort and had 3 people working to get his nails trimmed! I really appreciated the extra effort and I will keep coming back! I love this vet. I first found them when I needed my chicken, Fierce, to be seen for an emergency injury. Little known fact, not many vets see chickens, and all the ones I called were completely booked or not taking patients. I had to stay in my car for the appointment and following that, Fierce needed medical attention and had to stay all day. Dr. Cortell was wonderful - he talked me through all of our options and provided updates all day. Including one that one of the techs was cuddling with Fierce. After Fierce came home Dr. Cortell checked on her for many weeks. I've now started taking my dogs to ArchVet. We got lucky and Dr. Cortell was our doctor for the dog visit. He was sweet to ask about Fierce, which I was happy to share is completely healed and feathers are growing back on her injury. read more

Happy that they scheduled my dog for the same day for what I thought to be a foxtail in her ear. Office visit and exam were good, and reasonable in price ($98). However, after initial exam, just to look inside her ear with a scope was $664.31, without sedation! I've been to other vets for the same reason and $664.31 was for sedation. An additional $101.72 for the antibiotic and the total bill was $864.03, and my dog is still shaking her head. Won't be going back. read more

We've come to Archvet several times for both my cats and had positive experiences despite my initial apprehensiveness because I had read some negative reviews. Fast forward to last week when we brought in my senior cat for an emergency, so we didn't have an appointment. We had arrived several minutes after they had opened and the young lady working at check-in said she didn't have any doctors until one hour later. Likely seeing my panicked look, she offered to check with the vet techs to see if we could get started on the assessment and wait for the doctor to arrive. We were grateful they took my little girl in to be evaluated. Surprisingly, a vet (Dr.Soloman) was available shortly afterwards and concluded that my little girl's hyperthyroidism caused her heart rate to elevate, resulting in 4 blood clots. Dr.Soloman was very honest and told us we could spend thousands of dollars with a 2-4% chance of my little girl feeling a little better or we could put her down. It was devastating to hear and I was secretly hoping my girl just had an asthma attack, but my worst fear came true. Dr.Soloman was very gentle in talking to us about our options, expressed a lot of empathy, and gave us the time we needed to process everything. He was such a kind doctor; we're so glad he was there that morning. Shortly afterwards, the vet tech presented us with a bill and we agreed on doing a communal burning along with a paw print of my baby. She left the room and we had a little bit of time to say goodbye to my girl. We were then interrupted to sign the receipt while we were bawling our eyes out. Then it was time to give my baby her first shot - anesthesia. We cried as we saw her slowly fading away. The second shot was euthanasia and that was when I broke down, seeing my baby's heart beat for the last time. As I was sobbing furiously, the vet tech came in to give me a box of Kleenex, which was very kind of her. As my husband and I were hugging each other and crying our eyes out, the vet tech came in again and asked for my credit card again because she had forgotten to charge for the paw print. I honestly felt annoyed for the first time. Couldn't they wait until we left the room? It had only been a minute or two since my baby's heart stopped beating so I was devastated and emotional. I handed her my card and continued crying. A minute later, she came back with the card. I wish there was a better process for payment. My suggestion would be to wait until we have said our goodbyes or do it before the procedure because you just said farewell to your family member and collecting money can wait a few minutes. I mean, we are returning customers and they have our credit card number from a few minutes ago. Even if somehow we left, they can always call us back. That left us with a really sour ending as it was not the most opportune time to ask for payment. Seriously, it was $30. It could wait a few moments. We had paid over $900 to put down our little girl, you'd think the $30 could wait maybe 5 minutes after our girl was gone. Even now, a week after it's happened, I think it really left a strong impression on us and even when we told our family about what happened, they were quite upset. My friend said her recent visit elsewhere waited until she was done crying to do the final payment, which was nice. I hope they can improve in the sensitive side of things a little more but I do appreciate Dr.Soloman for helping us that day. He really gave us the empathy we needed. This rating is solely based off our last experience. All our previous visits were 3-4 stars. 3 for one visit because we had scheduled an appointment ahead of time to avoid the "late night" fee but they scheduled us for 8pm and still charged us $300 for after hour fees. I wish they had disclosed that while we were booking the appointment. Overall, I love the vets here but I feel like it's all about collecting money as soon as possible. We went to Archvet for urgent care. The vet that we saw was amazing. She gave us so much time to answer a bunch of questions. She recommended good food brands, treat brands. She recommended a supplement for our kittens as well which is helping keep them healthy. It was no doubt expensive as it's urgent care. read more

Recently I took my dog to the emergency vet because she was having pain in her eye. When I called the hospital, the staff was very helpful and made an appointment for me to right away. (Hence the two stars instead of one.) I am thankful that they were able to see us that night without a wait but the frustrating parts of the visit were the following: 1. Telling me to give my dog the medication when I get home. When I asked why she would not give it to her at the hospital, the vet said that they usually do not but since they were not busy that night, she would give it to my dog. As if she was doing me a favor. Never have I ever gone to a vet appointment or emergency appointment where they did not give my dog the treatment right then and there. There was not a good reason given other than being busy. Mind you, I was the ONLY one there. 2. I needed to take my dog for follow up within 2 to 3 days, this was the recommendation they made to me. When I asked when I would get my dogs medical records they said within 7 days. I informed them that I would need the medical records, per their own instructions, within 2 to 3 days and my doctor would need to see the medical records. They said I would have to wait until tomorrow for the person who handles the records to come in. I called again the next morning and they said the same thing. They said they can not guarantee anything. It was like pulling teeth to get the medical records. I finally got them that day, but this process was extremely unnecessary and inconvenient. 3. As for the treatment, I am glad I was able to get an appointment and am very appreciative that we were able to be seen but I left there with lots of worry and concern. The doctor did not explain to me many different options, just told me worst case scenario and to follow up with my own vet or them within 2 to 3 days. Overall, I would say if you needed an emergency vet and the others one are booked or have a long wait, you can go here but the customer service is not the best and getting the medical records will have hurdles. read more

Worst decision to come here, DONT DO IT. FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR FUR BABY!!! I took my baby (Dog) here to be seen because other closer hospitals were all full, and the wait was 4-6hrs. My baby needed to be seen right away. I normally went to the one off Santa Teresa, and the Dr lived around the corner from us, which is why we went there. But they were closed this night, so we went to the Winchester facility!!! All was great until we got our call back with the results and further instructions. They proceeded to tell me our pet needed to be put on a special diet, no problem. We know this works. We've had a pet on a special diet before. So they proceeded to tell me they "only have 4 cans left" and advised me to take them, just in case they are not available later. The catch here was, she said $31 a can!!!! For a minuet, I thought if this is what my baby needs, then I have no choice. I said, "Sure, please save all 4 cans." I hung up and thought about it a bit.... hmmm. Thats expensive, so I looked at Petco and noticed the Cann were $3 and some change. So I called them back, and I asked them if they could email me the prescription because I lived 75miles from the clinic. They said, "Absolutely not!". As if I upset them by asking this. I asked why not. The response from the Dr was "We don't know ow if you will really use it for your pet!"... I was flabbergasted by the remark! I said, "You mean to tell me that you feel after spending $2k. I would take a prescription and sell the dog food!. I told her that was the most ridiculous thing I've heard. They refused to give it to me. Thankfully, Petco allowed me to purchase a few cans while I waited for my regular vet to open. So moral of the story, take your pet somewhere else, where the concern is getting your pet feeling better and not making the extra dollar. UNACCEPTABLE. I made sure to let all my family and friends know about this place as well. Ugh!! read more

I recently visited ArchVet with a blocked cat unable to urinate. There were some pros and cons in my experience. Pros (+) 1. Dr. Marquez is a terrific doctor. Kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable. My cat was comfortable in her hands, she spoke to him kindly, and she immediately recognized he was blocked. She's bilingual as well. She's the only reason this review has 2 stars instead of 1. 2. Despite rejecting their services, the office contacted me the following day to ask how my cat was doing. I appreciated the gesture. Cons (-) 1. Dirty. There was a large puddle of urine next to the receptionist's desk, in the middle of the walkway. It was there when I arrived, and there when I left almost 2 hours later. Moreover, the table where I was told to place my cat had dried blood splattered on it. I've attached a photo below. 2. I was going to be charged $300+ dollars to save 10 minutes of waiting time. Allow me to elaborate. I called the clinic in the morning, telling them I was certain my cat was blocked. As you may know, a urinary blockage is always considered an emergency as it can be fatal. I was directed by staff to schedule an appointment to meet with the doctor in 4 hours, rather than wait in the lobby for an unknown amount of time. According to whoever assisted me over the phone, I was to be charged a $184 consultation fee. I agreed to this, arrived on time, and after 50 minutes of waiting, I asked the nurse when the doctor would come. She replied in 10-15 min. When I reminded the nurse that my cat was blocked, her eyes widened and she said that qualified as an emergency. She'd be happy to call the doctor immediately....IF I agreed to pay $327. Note, over the phone I had communicated to the staff member my cat was an emergency patient. I was told over the phone a consolation for a blocked cat cost $184. I understand emergency costs exist, but surely I could have been told as such over the phone instead of misled? 3. EXPENSIVE $$$ EXAMPLE 1: My cat was prescribed PRAZOSIN by 3 different veterinary technicians, including ArchVet. All three recommended a similar dosage. Let us compare prices: Clinic 1: $29.00 Clinic 2: $17.50 ArchVet: $80.00 (I have saved all documentation of these prices, should someone question their validity) EXAMPLE 2: Let us compare prices for the SAME emergency procedure from 2 different clinics: Clinic 1: An emergency unblocking procedure, medicine, and overnight care for 3 days. Cost: ~$2K ArchVet: An emergency unblocking procedure, medicine, and care for 9 hours Cost: ~$8K+ EXAMPLE 3: While waiting for a room, I met a nice family in the waiting room with their puppy. They asked me if I knew of any other institution which performed castrations because, and I quote, ArchVet is "very very very veeeeeeery expensive". When I directed them to where my cat was castrated, for free, they immediately pulled out their phones and saved all the information I gave them. This should have been my first indication at ArchVet's prices. ------ To conclude, I can't speak for the medical services provided at ArchVet. After all, I quickly left when I saw the prices ArchVet would have charged me and found care elsewhere at a significantly more affordable price. That said, I am VERY familiar with how much certain procedures and medications cost, and I can say with certainty that ArchVet charges SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the norm. I'd suggest searching around for care elsewhere. More affordable institutions DO exist. read more

We left with a very thorough and informed understanding of what the problems could be and how we address them. Just Evil. Took my girlfriends pet hen to be euthanized after I accidentally let it get attacked by my dogs. The Hen was dying, but very slowly and excruciatingly. The dogs had ripped one whole side off of her and her organs were exposed and damaged. She could not possibly be saved. Frankly I was amazed she was even still alive with a huge chunk of her body simply gone. I brought her in, and I was blubbering like a baby, wracked with guilt, and from her suffering. They take a brief look (ten seconds), recognizing that she's unsaveable, and that my trauma and guilt gives them considerable leverage, they say they'll euthanize her for $700. You read that right: $700 : for an exam that consisted of a ten second glance to see that half of her body was gone, and to give her 2 shots (or gas and a shot.) and they would not proceed till I paid in full. Yes they continued to let her suffer until I could borrow money to put her out of her pain. And If I could not borrow $700 at a moments notice to put her out of her pain, they were clear and adamant that they would simply let her die as slowly and painfully as it took her. I did not argue about the cost at the time as her suffering really was all that mattered to me at the time... clearly they could see that. As I could not leave her suffering I borrowed $700 from my sister (for "emergency vet care.") After the bill was pre-paid the front desk girl informed them so they could / would proceed. Telling my sister afterward what specifically it was for, she was incredulous, as was everyone else I have told: that it could possibly cost $700 to euthanize a nearly-dead chicken. I understand the euthanasia medicine (enough to euthanize a two pound half dead chicken) costs them money, and they don't work for free, but seriously: their price to simply put down a suffering hen is obscene: and is extortion of traumatized pet owners or just those trying to relieve the suffering of an animal. And no this did not include any cremation or other costs as I took her with me and buried her myself. God-only- knows what insane price they would have charged for those upsell options. These clearly do not care at all about your suffering pets or you and are only concerned with squeezing every dollar they can get from you. I would not recommend anyone take any pet or animal they care about to these greedy sociopaths. * And before y'all respond that you're not a charity, and cannot euthanize a suffering animal for a a reasonable rate: I took in a dying cat that I found dying by the side of the road years ago and that vet did simply euthanize the cat and end its suffering without any charge at all. read more

How do you give Zero stars? ARCHVET Animal Hospital and EMERGENCY Care are charging customers a 10X to 12X premium for medications administered after hours. On August 29th 2023 at approximately 7PM My dog started to have a severe allergic reaction. I have been through this before and I know the protocol with my regular vet. She requires shots of Dexamethasone, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), and sometimes Cytopoint. I called Archvet and asked if they were available and if they carried these medications. They told me they did and so I immediately went to their facility. I arrived there just before 8PM and their staff spent roughly 10 minutes evaluating my dog and talking to me about her allergy history. I again informed them that she only requires shots of Dexamethasone, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), and sometimes Cytopoint. They agreed that this was an appropriate course and did no further diagnostics or lab tests. They charged me $619.40 for a 3ml shot of Dexamethasone. This same medication and dose I paid $45.00 for in January of this year to my veterinarian in Morgan Hill, South County Animal Hospital. They charged me $456.41 for a 2.3ML shot of Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), for which, my veterinarian would normally charge $45.00. It is expected and understandable that an after-hours clinic would charge a premium for an office visit. I paid Archvet $300 versus the normal $70 that my veterinarian charges. It seems criminal to charge such an exorbitant premium on medications that they already have on hand. I also understand that I could have refused the treatment and left, however, my dog's allergic reaction was causing swelling around her mouth and nose and I was concerned that her breathing would be compromised if I waited any longer and tried to go to another clinic. I felt it was literally a life-or-death situation. I have left four messages for the Manager over the past 3 days, and she refuses to return my calls. The staff is very polite and always takes my message but still, the manager refuses to return my call. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that this was just a billing error. But their lack of responsiveness confirms my suspicion that they are in fact price gouging and making no apology or remedy for it. I am fortunate enough that I was able to pay the $1300 bill, but I know that other pet owners are not as lucky, and for them, they would have to go into debt, or worse, be forced to take their animal home with life-threatening ailments and no treatment simply because of these predatory practices. read more

(TL;DR: Arch tried to gouge us out of $8,000 for an 8 hour hospitalization. They also bill themselves as 24 hour care, but they transfer animals elsewhere after 1 am for an additional fee. Avoid this unethical, pathetic excuse for a veterinarian if you can.) We took our dog here last weekend. He'd been acting lethargic and stopped eating. Since it was a late afternoon on a Sunday we had to find an emergency vet and Arch was the nearest to us. We checked him in and they came out a short time later to inform us that he had a high fever and they were very concerned about it. Of course, we were now very worried as well, as we'd initially thought he simply had a stomach bug. Due to the high fever, they recommend he be hospitalized over night so they could give him medications intravenously and monitor him. Then they presented us with their estimate. I attached a picture of it here, but in short it was almost $8,000 for a hospital stay that would have lasted only HALF THE NIGHT (the estimate states that care ends at 1 am!!!). Being long time dog owners (and lovers), we knew immediately this could not be right. It seemed as though the were preying on our emotional states as we were really quite scared for him. I got pretty upset when I realized our very sick dog would have to be taken elsewhere so that we would not be gouged. We ending up paying them $200 for nothing, and took him over to Sage, one of the most highly regarding veterinarians in the Bay Area. The final bill, after his full one night stay at sage, was a little less than $4,000, which is in line with what we expected. It is also worth mentioning that Arch markets themselves as 24 hour care. They are not. They transfer pets to another hospital (via ambulance) after 1 am when presumably they do not have any staff on-site to monitor them. They did not include the charge for that on our estimate and I can only guess what the outrageous cost for that would have been. PS: Archvet, if you're reading this, I left the invoice number on the photo of the estimate you gave us that I have attached to this review. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to continue the pleasant conversation we were having before we had to find an honest and competent veterinarian to help us with our pet. UPDATE replying to business owners reply: 1. This is the only honest thing that you said in your reply. I was angry and scared and upset we'd have to go elsewhere and was rude to your staff. That was wrong and I should not have treated your employees that way, especially since they are clearly just following your instructions on how to overcharge your customers and probably have no idea what the prevailing prices are in this area for such services. 2. Yes, we did decline all treatments, because we received a bill that was double what even the best, most highly regarded veterinarian in the bay area charges. 3. You stated "we do not stay open 24 hours so how exactly would we hospitalize your pet." This is incredibly absurd. I have attached a photo of the exterior of your building where it says "ANIMAL HOSPITAL" and "URGENT CARE +24/7." Am I misunderstanding what 24/7 means, or are you? How about the word "hospital." Can I lend you a dictionary so you can better understand the meaning of the word? 4. and 5. Yes I did forget to attach the estimate and it has since been uploaded. SECOND UPDATE to business owners dishonest reply: I specifically stated in my review that the *final bill* (i.e. TOTAL BILL for those of us with reading comprehension issues) was less than $4,000. Your estimate was for almost $8,000. What exactly are you trying to say? That your bill was for a regimen of treatments lasting for some indefinite period of time? Also, thanks for insinuating that I cannot afford your emergency services and therefore I guess, to hell with my pet, right? I can afford it and would do anything it takes to save his life. But having done this many times before with sick pets, I knew immediately you priced were outrageously exorbitant and was vindicated the next day with a final bill that was half of what you estimated. Lastly, save your sermon about working thru a pandemic. A lot of us are, myself and wife included. As much as I regret speaking to your innocent employees that way and atoned for it in my last update, it still is NO justification for you gouging your customers. I wanted to love these guys. I'm frustrated because they give good care but I feel like the bottom line is making a dollar. I really wanted to find a regular vet close to my home but there appears to be a constant attempt to mark up. Simple vaccinations that should be managed by vet techs are required to have an office visit charge after 6 months. A year I get, but 6 months? The physical my dog had 8 months earlier that totaled close to $500 wasn't enough. Three immunizations and an office visit are 250 and they tried to add an unnecessary RX that I indicated I had already had, onto the bill. Don't even get me started on the quote I got for teeth cleaning... The other frustration I had was their inability to work with Chewy's RX process online and you have to get a physical prescription instead of doing everything digitally. The cost of Chewy compared to their prices would make you faint. I'm not sure why this is unless they are trying to make it so inconvenient that you give up and just buy their drugs instead of going through the hassle of Chewy. I requested the written prescription but didn't hear back for several days and then just dropped by to get it. Several days later I got the call the Rx was ready to pick up. So a week to get my dogs allergy prescription and then I have to mail it in since they won't do it digitally? It took several weeks to get the drugs all told. Other vets have that ability and I would think a newer clinic would have those capabilities. I guess instead of being my regular vet it might be my emergency vet and I will look for a better balance of convenience, cost and care. Back to Adobe I go and I bitched about their prices too but at least the one year visit policy allows for vet tech appointments and lower costs and they work with online pharmacies. read more

Just when I got one pup healthy, my second pup gets sick. I called ArchVet to make an appointment and I was able to bring him in the same day. From the front desk, to the vet tech (Rachel) and to the doctor, everyone was very pleasant and positive. Dr. Kong was transparent with her diagnosis and even with the plan of action. My cat has a suspected heart murmur and they didn't check that first before suggesting it. Sedation could be fatal and it's your responsibility to examine for risks before requesting a procedure.
