Best veterinary practice! We are on our 6th setter and Dr Kestler has been our vet since we moved here in 1983. Additionally we've always used their kennel for our dogs when we travel and it gives us comfort to know the vet staff is there should he need any attention. I have always thought very highly of this establishment, until today. I know they are always booked tight with appointments... so, I am really surprised that they have such limited business hours. Do people take the day off from work in order to get their animals seen by this vet? Cause, during their operating hours, I'm usually working! 8am to 2pm M-F Sat & Sun, closed I've taken 2 of my cats here, in the past. One passed away in 2016 and the other just turned 10 years old. I also have another 10 year old cat that has not been seen here. I tried to get an appointment, for her - but, after my conversation with the person I spoke with (Meg), this morning - I got the feeling that they are not interested in taking a new patient. In fact, she said that there were no files/records with my name.. and, that it must have been a long time since the last visit. In addition, she also made a comment that I was offended by. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Saito. Our cat Lisa (badly injured after an attack) would not be able to survive without Dr. Saito. Dr. Saito is loving, caring, and compassionate. My baby girl is sick... in this painful and helpless situation, thanks to fellow yelper's reviews, I found Dr. Kestler who truly cares about your furry ones. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, reasonable and all that I could ask for, for a doctor who you need to entrust your beloved family member who does not tell you what's wrong. I just found out that my 13 year-old kitty has thyroid cancer. They've called me the very next day of the blood test to let me know. When we went in to the office, Dr. Kestler spent some time explaining her situation, what is the possibilities and options and what could happen to her, thoroughly with patience. Now my baby girl is going through more examination but I feel okay about leaving her there. With my previous veterinarians, I used to feel somewhat uneasy and skeptical after leaving my cat, but not with this hospital. Compared to other vet, office visit might be slightly more expensive (base is $72), BUT with the quality of the service and the care that you get here is just wonderful. With bording for a day, IV, Urinalysis, Blood test total was a little over $300. It is not the "speedy-quickie" doctor, passing your pets left to right, but they are more personable. Nurse and receptionist are pretty helpful and friendly too. read more

I am so grateful for the referral to Dr. Saito. After a horrible experience with a change of ownership at our local vet, a neighbor told me about Cambrian Animal Hospital. I took my dog in to have a lump checked and mentioned another little lump to Dr. Saito on our first visit. Turns out, the big lump was nothing to worry about, but little lump was a malignancy and she caught it with a biopsy. The whole team was amazing through the surgery process, and the fees for services were entirely reasonable. I never felt pushed to exceed my budget, and they gave me lots of suggestions for my little guy's comfort during his recovery. He's good as new just a few weeks after a pretty major procedure. read more

I made an appointment for my dog's vaccines this morning at 8am. And following these vaccines, she would be assessed at a doggy day care 3 days from now. I get there at 7:45am, and they tell me my appointment was written down for 8 days later. I asked if they could quickly do 4 vaccines this morning - answer no. No one was there yet... but he said they were booked. So this has screwed up my total schedule, not to mention I commute from over the hill. If you make an appointment, call and confirm it the day before. The lady making the appointment seemed really distracted. So call before you make the effort to drive there. read more

I found Dr. Kestler 8 years ago when I adopted my dog, Charlie. He offered a free initial exam for animals adopted from San Jose Animal Care Center and his practice is around the corner from my house. He is hands down the best Vet I have ever gone to. I trust him 100% with my animals. And even if I moved further from his practice I would still make the drive to see him. He is very patient, very kind, great with my fur kids, answers ALL of my questions (and I can ask A LOT!), he never rushes me, and he doesn't try to squeeze every last dime out of you like some Vets do. He also teaches me preventative care for my dog that has allergies so I don't have to come in with Charlie every other month with another skin problem. I can now catch it at home and use the extra skin cream he gives me and start treating it myself. He taught me how to clean and treat the area and as long as I catch it quickly enough I don't have to take Charlie in. I have never met a Vet before him that does this. I tell everyone I know that they should go to him. I even have my sister and mom taking their fur kids to him now. I noticed a couple people said they are overpriced. I find them to be comparable to other places, MAYBE a tad more than some but nothing outrageous. Plus, they do not recommend all kinds of costly treatments, etc. Dr. Kestler takes the time to eliminate certain things before you have to start on anything more costly (like blood work, etc.). So far I have been lucky and haven't had to get into anything too expensive. And as I mentioned, he teaches you preventative care so maybe you pay a few extra dollars but that means you won't be going back every few months with the same issues. I also noticed someone said it cost them $400 for shots and normal blood work. Blood work is not normal. Something else had to be going on with that persons pet that they are leaving out. I have NEVER had to have blood work done on a normal vaccination check up for any of my animals at any Vet I have gone to. I have also NEVER paid over $150.00 for shots and a check-up. I have had animals in my life since I was born and between me and my family I have had a lot of experiences with other Vets. I was constantly changing Vets and could never settle on one because I just never cared for them much until I met Dr. Kestler. I will stick with him as long as he is in practice. The poor guy is stuck with me and my four fur babies (2 dogs and 2 cats). read more

Can not say enough about Cambrian Animal Hospital. My boyfriend's parents have brought their pets here for years and years. I have a cat Yoda, and we adopted a dog, Yukon. Dr. S is great with Yoda; she is like a cat whisperer. Dr. Kessler is so kind and caring with my dog and was 100 percent spot on when I took my dog in for weird symptoms. A lot of time we pet owners can worry about every little thing. Doctor Kessler is very attentive, and honestly could be a specialist himself. Alas, although Dr. Kessler comes highly recommended by many of Ye Yelpers, we must stop taking our pets there. We like Dr. Kessler but has some very restrictive insurance which prevents him from letting us do things for our cats like inject medicine or hydrate our bad-kidney baby at home. It seems like someone sued him for something once because there is no at-home pet-care allowed. Unfortunate. Also, they don't do any electronic billing or anything and the medication is overpriced. I've been using Cambrian Animal Hospital for 13 years now, and would never consider taking my (very high maintenance) dog anywhere else. They treat my dog very well, always take the time to explain things clearly and answer questions, and encourage me to call back later if you have questions. My dog usually sees Dr. Saito, who is great, but my few experiences with the other doctors have been good as well. My dog still gets excited when he realizes where we are going. I wanted to take my newly adopted kitten, Zoey, in for a check-up and saw all the glowing reviews for Cambrian Animal Hospital, so I decided to bring her here. When I called to make an appointment, the receptionist, Meg, was very helpful and accommodating of my schedule. When I arrived the parking lot was about half full with vehicles. Upon entering the office there was one other patient waiting, a Burmese Mountain dog (what a beautiful BIG dog!). Meg mentioned there were four emergency cases so they were running slightly behind. I suppose that's a good sign people are bringing their pets here for urgent care. Zoey and I were led into an examining room within about 10 minutes of arriving. Shortly after Dr. Saito came in and examined Zoey and thought she was in pretty good overall health. She was very good about explaining what diet Zoey should be on, as well as the available tests that I should consider to make sure Zoey has the best care possible. There was no pressure to perform these tests, but I was given a level of comfort that I went ahead and had them performed. I will definitely be bringing Zoey back here for annual check-ups and care. The Cambrian Animal Hospital is conveniently located near Camden and Highway 17, on Curtner Avenue and just half a block down from Kinko's and Starbucks. We just got a new pup, and wanted him checked over & have some shots done, we found the Cambrian Animal Hospital on YELP. 1. It was local 2. It has nothing but rave reviews 3. Dr Saito is our hero as well, she was so kind & gentle with our pup, he made very little fuss, and she was very good with him. She didn't try the 'hard sell' for any of his recommended treatments. He had a bit of a runny nose when we got him, she said it was likely a left over from the Rescue Center we got him from, and to keep an eye on him for a few days, and if it didn't hget better, then she would prescribe some meds for him. 4. Prices are very reasonable too. Can't recommend them highly enough. Thank you. Update....8/10/09 Dr Saito was very careful on Wednesday when we took out kitty in as he had been under the weather for a couple of days. She examined him & gave him some hydration to help him feel a bit better, she did some bloodwork & we left.... We got the call we were dreading on Thursday morning, the Doctor told us he was terminally ill, so we took the tough choice & had him put to sleep...I am heartbroken, but Dr Saito handled the job with compassion & skill & care, she was with him till the end & very sad. Once again, I cannot recommend this place any higher. The staff are truly wonderful, and we know that Jesse is in a better place & no longer in pain. read more

We had a wonderful experience here with our very sweet but very skittish rescue dog, and after one visit we're already loyal customers! I've had a history of owning hard-to-examine dogs, and have had a long string of disappointing vets from Texas to California. Cambrian is above and beyond the best animal hospital I've ever taken a pet to! Dr. Kestler is fantastic, and our tiny teacher salary is so happy his prices are reasonable! Our last (overpriced) vet in the area sold out to ubercorporation, soulless VCA without notifying her clients. We have been talking our cocker spaniel here for years and entrusted his care to Dr. Saito. She has been superb and always provided excellent care. She has actually taken care of my parents two previous dogs so when we were looking for a vet for our dog it was an easy choice. Even though she is really good it is pretty easy to get an appointment with her. She explains everything she is doing and is very easy to talk with. We have been taking our doggie boys here for over 4 years now and are very happy with the care they have received. Everyone is really nice, the receptionist is the sort that calls you "hon" in an endearing way. Dr. Saito is very kind and patient and my questions and concerns have always been addressed. I also bring the dogs in on an outpatient basis to have their glands purged by the techs, who are also really nice and take care of a really distasteful job cheerfully. (so worth the money in my opinion) I would recommend them to anyone. So, why not 5 stars? The office is outdated - no computers. Everything is in paper files! The receipts are hand written and tallied with a calculator. I also wish they had vaccine clinics - where you are not charged an exam visit just to get updated shots. It does get pricey, and I have often thought I need to go a local pet shop on one of their clinic days. I end up going back for shots because my "boys" are seniors, and they have always well taken of. read more

I can't express how much I love this place. The ladies who work in the office are always nice and very helpful, and Dr. Keslter was very good with Kasey (our cat). They don't try to over sell you on anything, when I was concerned that Kasey had asthma (she pants like a dog) he explained a couple of tests he could do (none of them were cheap), but told us unless it got really serious, it probably wasn't worth the money. Best of all, when I called to get Kasey her first check-up after we adopted her, they told me that since we got her from the San Jose Animal Care Center they would waive my first office visit fee if we brought her in within 10 days of her adoption. Their office is a little out of the way, but I would highly recommend it to anyone. read more

I sent a letter to Dr. Kestler describing my experience and received a personal call from him the next day to apologize for the way I was treated and the misinformation. They are receiving new patients. The call did a lot to change my mind about their appreciation of customers. Not all business owners will go out of their way to contact a customer and apologize. I am still upset at the way I was treated, but now think perhaps the receptionist was just having a bad day. read more

I moved to the area in September, and mid-October needed a vet for my cat Charlotte who was unable to urinate. I searched yelp and found the Cambrian Animal Hospital. Dr. Kestler and the Cambrian Animal Hospital are fantastic!! I called on a Monday at noon and they were able to get Charlotte an appointment for the following day at noon. I didn't have to wait long before being taken to an exam room. Dr. Kestler came in shortly thereafter and examined Charlotte. He explained to me that he would take her in the back to take a urine sample in order to test it and see what was wrong and empty her bladder, then he explained that until the urine test came back, he would give her anti-biotics and and anti-inflammatory via injection and then anti-biotics to administer at home. After treating Charlotte, Dr. Kestler talked with me about the possible results of the urinalysis. He explained the different conditions that might appear and what their treatments are, but he was adamant that I not get worried just yet; he just wanted to prepare me for whatever might come. Dr. Kestler told me that he would call me the next day (Wednesday) as soon as he got the results of the urine test, and said that if I had any concerns or if Charlotte still wasn't urinating to call him right away. I called at noon Wednesday and Dr. Kestler said to bring Charlotte in. They squeezed us in - I had to wait in the lobby for about an hour while they drained her bladder and examined her between other patients, but it was pleasant chatting with the lady who worked the front desk and other "patients" that came in. When they called me into the exam room, Dr. Kestler brought the urine sample to show me that Charlotte has Feline Bladder disease and describe all that it entails. He explained the treatment to me and discussed potential future outcomes. He was very kind and patient and explained everything thoroughly; truly a great veterinarian! Of course it was a traumatic experience for poor Charlotte to have her bladder drained, but Dr. Kestler and his team were very loving and gentle with her. read more

I took our dog Milo (Parson Russell Terrier) here for the first time for an exam and possible diagnosis for Kennel Cough. One thing I loved about this place is the organization given from the front receptionist. It has been nearly 3 years since I last owned a dog, I was told to fill out some basic information and overall maybe waited about 15 minutes before I was introduced to Dr. Kessler. I was greeted with a smile and we went through with the examination with Milo. Overall, I was given thorough and detailed instructions on what to use and how to care for Milo. One thing that I really enjoyed was that Dr, Kessler had asked me questions regarding my future plans with Milo. (i.e. will I be traveling with him in the future?) He recommended that I take Milo to get a few more exams if I do plan on taking him away from San Jose. The experience was pleasant, quick and painless for both myself and Milo. Dr. Kessler and the staff at the Cambrian Animal Hospital will be my new go to for his yearly exams and God forbid if he must go in for emergencies. read more

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Kestler for 21 years. He is an excellent vet, does a great job of taking the time necessary, presenting options and odds to help when having to make care decisions, and he really cares. I believe that they are on the expensive side, but I also believe that I'm getting everything I'm paying for. The facilities are dated, as are their records keeping (no computer, no email), but those are minor issues at best; I'm there for my cats, not to soak up ambiance. I would recommend Dr. Kestler unconditionally. read more

After having a bad experience at another vet we decided to check out Cambrian Animal Hospital because of the good reviews. I am thrilled that our experienced matched the others noted on Yelp. Our dog was recently diagnosed with internal bleeding and eventually passed away. Dr Kessler did an amazing job of explaining to us what was going on with our dog. He spent a tremendous amount of time with us answering all our questions and explaining all of our options. We never felt pressured to choose one approach over another. He gave us all the information we needed and left the decision up to us. It is awful to loose a pet that has become a family member but if you have to go through it Dr Kessler is a good vet to have by your side. read more

I meant to post this update sooner... I am happy to report that Dr. Kessler was right on with his diagnosis and treatments. My cat had some sort of infection that caused her face to swell up. Dr. Kessler lanced the infection which left her with an open wound on the side of her face. He gave me specific step by step instructions on how to treat the open wound at home as well as what to expect with approximate recovery time. He told me it would take around 6 weeks for the wound to close up, and sure enough, he was right! She has fully recovered and back to her normal self. I appreciate the thoroughness of this establishment. read more

After having not so great experiences with other vets, we found Cambrian Animal Hospital and have been very happy with them. Dr. Saito is really good with our dog, a very nervous german shepherd who hates going to the vet. She is gentle and thorough, and always takes time to explain everything to us. Our dog's ear was bit last year and we weren't happy with the emergency vet and another animal hospital wanted to cut half of our dog's ear off. Dr. Saito recommended against this and sure enough, the ear healed perfectly on its own. We've been through anal gland infections, stomach problems, and various other medical issues that have come up. Each time, I've been totally satisfied with the way our dog was treated. It may not be the most modern place or the least expensive place, but we wouldn't trust anyone else to take care of our girl! read more

I have been bringing my animals here since 2010. Previously, our pug had bad experiences at two vets (to the point where she hyperventilated and passed out at the last one), but she trundles in happily here. In 2011, Dr. Saito operated on Pennie (the pug) and removed a large cancerous tumor from her liver. Pennie is still with us today. I have also seen Dr. Kessler when Dr. Saito is off--when our old cat had a seizure--and he is great too. IMO, prices are comparable to this area, and less than you will pay at Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos. read more

Dr. Saito has taken care of my Siberian Husky since I got him more than a year ago. I have taken my past pets to another vet, but was never fully satisfied with the treatment. A good friend recommended this location when I got my dog. I have no plans in changing vets. The staff is very friendly and I think my dog receives better health care then I do! read more

Dr. Saito is awesome!! I know Kona dog is in good hands when he has to go to the vet. I have no worries at all. Dr. Saito is great about explaining the issues in regards to the animal. Everyone in the office is super friendly! This week I have been there three time with Kona. The first day they were able to fit me in without an appointment. Really means alot to me that they take the pet's health seriously. I have even recommended the Cambrian A H to my boss.
