If you want excellent customer service, and a good ebike, Area 13 is the place to buy your bike. I've purchased two bikes from Area 13. The first was a Biktrix step-through. It was a really nice bike, having all the features which I wanted within my price range. Unfortunately, the bike's design and my body type did not sync well, and the bike developed a low-speed shimmy when I rode it. Area 13 tried everything they could to remedy the problem, but it appeared to be a freak design issue, with the shimmy only happening when I - but not anyone else - rode the bike: as could be seen when observing me shimmying around the parking lot. It was a weird one-off, but both Biktrix and Area 13 agreed, without hesitation, to return both the bike and my money. (This is seldom the type of service one gets when buying directly from the online-only retailers!) I then decided to take a chance and buy the larger-framed Area 13 Blackbird step-through after Blake made several suggestions about how I might adapt it to my smaller-than-an-adult-male stature: all of the adaptations worked wonderfully well. I now have put almost 300 miles on the Blackbird and truly love this smooth-riding, powerful, comfortable, easy-to-switch-gears bike. I've had one, heat-related issue - bikes don't like to be ridden up and down steep hills in 98 degree heat - that Area 13 repaired within one day. Living in the hot Sierra foothills, I've had opportunity to put their fix to the test and it's holding up well. And, contrary to what one of the other reviewers has written, if you've done your homework you'll recognize the quality name-brand bike parts that Area 13 uses: the quality of the parts are at the higher end for bikes in the $2500 range. To expect more than this is unrealistic and one would have to pay thousands of dollars more to get the type of ebike upgrades that that reviewer seems to expect. This place totally ROCKS! I was able to test ride 14 e-bikes over three days with no pressure to buy here. They have bikes that they design, manufacture, and sell (Bolton and Area13 labels) and they are also distributors for several other high quality brands. They also specialize in YouTube content creation on their Area13 eBike channel. They often have great one-off bikes they acquired to review, sometimes at discount prices. Everyone I met there, including customers, were chill, positive, energetic and happy. They remembered me by name after the first visit. A gem of Grass Valley, soon to move (August 2023) to a more accessible location near GV Safeway. Blake deserves a special recognition for attentiveness, knowledge, willingness and ability to correct any eBike related issues, great personality, and low pressure approach to bike sales. DO NOT BUY THESE BIKES!!! The people (most of them) there are amazing, very helpful and knowledgeable. Problem is their product. I bought an ebike in 2022. The bike was out of commission for half the year. Almost every component had to be replaced (thank god for the 1 year warranty). The issue seemed to stem from the sub par components installed on the bike, everything was light weight bicycle gear, nothing designed for a heavy ebike. Chains, sprockets and derailleurs all had to be replaced at least once each within the first 1,000 miles. The batteries they use are complete junk. the original one lasted 6 miles before it bricked. The 2 replacements would only provide about 40% of the power before they died. Finally purchased a new battery that was a little bit stronger, but I am having the same problem, the battery gets down to about 45% and dies. Most of my issues were handled per the warranty, but there were HUGE delays in almost every shipment, and the last interaction was horrible. A service tech (Blake?) thought it would be a good idea to hang up on me because I didn't drop to my knees and kiss his feet because he arranged for some warrantied replacement parts. His reaction was disappointing and unprofessional. read more

I have had a rad Rover 5 since 2015 was having multiple problems with the computer controller so I called area 13 bikes immediately I got a call back from a person who I was pretty sure was the owner of the company anyhow he walked me through step by step all the things that I should check before I commit to buying the controller upgrade kit. I did all of these checks and then when it came to time to consider ordering one I called back and I believe I spoke to the same person again I ordered one it was completely plug and Play so anybody could replace it I also called him twice again and both times immediately I was contacted back and he went far out of his way to make sure that I had all the help I needed and all the settings work correct the way that I wanted them. I do all of my shopping online and have for years. This company's owner is hands down the best customer service I've ever dealt with in my entire life. If you have any hesitation don't worry this guy will take good care of you without you needing to ask a million questions.
