I've stopped in here a couple of times to do some teleworking and have a coffee. And every time I meet the sweetest people. One time I got wrapped up in a conversation about vintage bags and got so many good tips on where to get the best vintage finds. It's kind of a community feel there, but you can totally have a quiet day to yourself too. The coffee is fantastic, the matcha is delicious, but listen to me... Get the cinnamon roll! You don't need to know anything else. I haven't gone when it's warm enough to sit outside but the patio furniture looks just as inviting as the inside. Cute cafe. Simple design, handwritings on the blackboard type. Their menu isn't super unique but has lavender, hazelnut, coconut, horchata, marshmallow, and caramel. Pretty big tea selection, so some floral like lavenders. I got their weekly special Samoa which has coconut, caramel and dark chocolate and they were able to substitute with oat milk. I didn't specify sugar level and they didn't ask. So the drink came out a bit sweeter than I'd liked, but it's not too bad, just not as creamy or aromatic as I'd liked, coffee flavor is a little light too. But overall, very cute shop with plenty of seating including outdoor ones! read more

Area Coffee is a fantastic local place to stop for your morning brew. I will give the caveat that my review is without a doubt influenced by knowing the owner, Frank, and the love and ministry he pours into the local community. That being said, they're serving up other local coffees, with Tala cold brew on tap and 3 Legged canned iced coffee. A great selection of teas, lattes, and other drinks. Looks like you can even get ice cream or a bakery item! They've got Holcomb Hollow treats. There is a fantastic outdoor area alongside the building. Perfect for the kids to run around. This was my first visit but Mitch behind the counter was warm and welcoming and helpful as I got oriented to their menu! read more

Cozy coffee shop with good coffee and great customer service! Tiffany was one of the best baristas I've met. It's nice location with a little outdoor area. Fun board games and great pastries! They have some fun drinks and if you want they have ICE CREAM! I love how this is a Christian centered coffee shop with nice people and cool art. In the end a great coffee shop. AREA Coffee is located in downtown Mundelein. We stopped in on a Saturday morning. It's a charming spot. There were a good amount of customers including a large group and small family. I ordered a seasonal maple cinnamon latte with oat milk (they have oat, soy, and almond and various dairy options, which is fantastic). I was pleasantly surprised that the latte wasn't sweet while still being flavorful. I didn't try any of the food but everything looked good. I look forward to trying their other lattes and food offerings when I'm back in the area! read more

I am the organizer of a Meetup group, and one of our monthly Meetups is a book discussion at a local coffee shop. Area Coffee was March's pick, and I was very excited to scope it out. We arrived shortly before 10am on a Sunday, and the space was pretty quiet up until about 10 minutes into us waiting in line, and then EVERYONE came in for a cup of coffee. Service was a bit slow, as the person at the cash register seemed to be newer, and that's okay, they were extremely sweet and were trying their best. The woman manning the espresso machine and drinks was efficient, but was pretty short with the cashier, and definitely needs to take a breather even during busier times. I had ordered a Wildflower Hibiscus tea and a spinach and feta pull-apart, and my pull-apart wasn't communicated to the woman who was making the orders. I didn't realize this until the customer who was behind me mentioned to her that there was another order for the pull-apart before his order. The woman then told me that this wasn't communicated to her so she didn't know, but her tone was incredibly harsh and unprofessional. It truly wasn't a big deal, as we all saw how swamped they were. No one was in a hurry. Her rude tone kind of made me feel like we were more of an inconvenience than anything ... it's okay to be stressed, but not okay to be rude. The tea was piping hot and yummy. The pull-apart sounded great in theory, but was heated in a cheap microwave, drizzled with some oil, and was a little tough to chew. I would highly recommend that Area upgrade their microwave, or invest in a toaster oven for a better experience. There are branded mugs, and nice smelling candles to purchase while you're waiting in line to place your order. There were enough tables scooted together family style, that our group of 8 had plenty of space to spread out. This is such a cute mom and pop cafe, with space to enjoy a coffee and a good read outside during warmer months, and I definitely will be taking advantage of that space this summer. read more

It's OK. Lots of potential. Has the right idea, but I think it's more of a summer spot, if that makes sense. Needs to be cozier. Ambiance is a little lacking, but it didn't turn me away and I'll be back. First of all, it's cold and apparently they don't turn the heat past 66. I know because I asked if the heat was even on and was told as much. Writing this review in early March, by the way! Also, the Internet is slow and I drove an hour and a half for an appointment at Marytown and planned on setting up shop for a few hours with school work while I waited. I'm wearing my coat and scarf and am still cold. The nice barista behind the counter did help me with my questions and critiques and to him I give ten gold stars. He was a delight and my favorite thing about the place! Lots of people these days have no idea how to handle themselves in customer service, but this kid had a twinkle in his eye and a good head on his shoulders. I appreciated that immensely. Overall, I'd say the coffee is very good, so at the end of the day, if that's all that matters, there are no issues. Prices are FABULOUS too! Very reasonable. read more

The owner and employees here are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet! They are so kind and knowledgable!! The parking here is street parking and there is a lot across the way. Very easy. Good amount of tables and outlets to work remotely at. They also had out door seating, and a record player. Looks like they have events throughout the summer too! AREA coffee is a cute, cozy, and wonderful local coffee shop in the downtown Mundelein area that serves delicious varieties of hot/ cold beverages, pastries, breakfast snack items, and Wisconsin's Chocolate Shoppe ice cream. On my recent first visit, I found the shop's atmosphere to be welcoming and the staff to be friendly and helpful. I went to AREA to get a hot beverage. I was in the mood for a coffee or latte. AREA's menu has a good variety of drinks. Currently, they have their Fall drinks special on the menu. From that menu, I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Chai (hot), and my wife ordered the Samoa Latte (cold). The pumpkin spice flavor Chai was really delicious. I couldn't get enough of it. I liked it a lot. The Samoa Latte made with coconut milk, chocolate, and caramel was also tasty. They also had a couple of flavored lemonade from which my son had a blueberry lemonade, which was refreshing. I liked how the shop is set up with nice seating arrangements inside and a few tables outside of the shop. The decor inside is nice. With beautiful photos and some musical instruments and board games to keep the patrons entertained while having their drinks and/ or food, Area Coffee shop has done a good job of making your experience a wonderful one. They also have an open mic night on Fridays for patrons who are into singing and playing musical instruments to showcase their talent. I really liked AREA and hope to go back soon. It's a popular shop among the locals, and it does get busy. With a good menu variety, reasonably priced items, and nice, friendly service, I definitely recommend checking out this fine establishment. read more

Best coffee in the Mundelein area. I guess it has an appropriate name doesn't it. AREA is located downtown making it close to lots of other shops and local businesses. Has a good variety to choose from. There's also some baked goods. At lunch I came in to get a coffee. It's about $5 for one of the fancier ones. That's about typical for a small locally owned place like this. Has some non dairy milks including almond. The menu has a lot of candy bar inspired ones if looking for something sweet. Chili P is a change from these ones. This is made with chili pepper and chocolate, giving it quite a spice. Also they have a few baked goods. Some are vegan. It's about $3 for a muffin. The Zucchini Chocolate Chip Muffin is among these. Has lots of events going on here. It often has live music. This is a pretty good spot on weekends. read more

Super cute shop in downtown Mundelein. I absolutely love checking out new local coffee shops and this one did not disappoint! Local pastries and local coffee. You really can't beat that. I tried the seasonal Blueberry Fields iced latte and my husband tried a traditional iced Mocha latte. They were super flavorful and creamy drinks, especially the blueberry fields! The lavender was a little overpowering, so it was a pretty subtle blueberry flavor, but it was still nice. The barista shook my latte up in a cocktail shaker lol! First time I've seen that, so that was pretty cool!! She was super nice and gave great recommendations! Definitely drinks made with love! The cinnamon roll was pretty tasty too!! Super cute place located downtown Mundelein. There's outdoor seating with a small stage. They have a large section of fall drinks, pastries (including gluten-free) and breakfast sandwiches. There was only one server when I went in but after I ordered, I got my zucchini chocolate chip muffin right away and a couple mins later my pumpkin chai tea. My muffin was gluten-free and a good amount of sweetness. I didn't love the pumpkin chai tea, I thought it was okay. A little too sweet but I definitely want to try the other drinks since they have a large selection of different lattes and coffees. We came here on late Sunday morning. It was very quiet and relaxing and staff was friendly. My husband and I got two coffees (one fall hot drink) and also the baristas favorite iced latte. They also have a decent selection of GF treats so we also tried their apple donuts. Very cozy, board games available, and I believe they may have wifi too. Only reason for 4 stars is because their coffees are on the sweeter side. Would highly recommend and we will be back. read more

Decided to give them a try after a trip to the grocery store. Easy parking right in front. Cute little shop with limited seating inside with eclectic furniture. I has the Toblerone which was quiet nice. Wouldn't say got a Toblerone flavor as there is no chocolate/mocha aspect but still delicious. I love an independent coffee shop and this one is charming. They have unique flavors of coffee and tea, but especially their lemonades. Downside is that it's a little bit cramped, but in the summer there's tons of outside seating by the Mundelein mural. read more

I appreciate the flavor menu and all the combinations of drinks you can get. Personally, this shop is never my go to because I find they don't use a good ratio of espresso, sugar and milk. If you don't mind the espresso flavor being buried by the sweetener, this wouldn't be a problem for you. I would say the drinks are comparable to typical chain coffee ratios like Starbucks and Dunkin. The ambience is also a little lacking to me, and doesn't feel cozy like many shops do. read more

I love the eclectic decor of this place, and found a sweet Bob Dylan interpretation album for $5 :) I was super pleased! The owner is kind and warm, and just awesomely welcoming. You can tell he digs what he does. They've got loads of little things for sale , from syrups to lip balms, to soaps, to bulk coffee and mugs. The epitome of LOCAL. This coffee shop utilized every inch of space to showcase local art, treats, etc. A large menu allows for plenty of coffee and tea options. Small plates and vegan/GF cookies and muffins are available too. Visually it is eclectic with stickers on tables and various decor but that is what makes this spot comfortable. You can change out the music, enjoy WiFi and purchase local goods (honey, art, mugs). I ordered a purple haze latte, a vegan zucchini muffin and vegan oatmeal cookies. Everything was delicious (my muffin was my favorite), although my feedback would be that my latte was not very warm when I got it. Nevertheless, I would suggest stopping in! read more

Relaxed atmosphere and excellent service! Nate and Griffin were super helpful and made their job look fun!

I'll start this review off by saying I myself am a barista and quite a geek when it comes to coffee. The barista seems to have a slight understanding of espresso and milk steaming however I noticed he pulled my shot for too long and foamed my milk much too foamy. I order a Cortado, a small drink, which he told me he could do, and what he handed me was something more akin to a cappuccino in a regular 12 oz mug. I'm not too picky so I drank it anyway. The highlight of this place is its cozy atmosphere and wonderfully large assortment of chocolates, pastries and trinkets of different kinds. Coffee however, is mediocre at best. With better barista training, this place could really knock down its competitors. read more

We had visited AREA for the first-time last Sunday, what a location! With this wonderful fall weather, it was such a pleasure to seat outside. But unfortunately, this was the one and only highlight of that visit. We ordered two espresso drinks with two different milks, so our barista was steaming one and left second pitcher to steam by itself unattended. The milk was boiling and spilling over the top for a good couple seconds... o my.... I was still hopeful my pumpkin spiced latte will be somewhat ok, it wasn't. There was not even a speck of foam on my latte, pumpkin flavor was off and unpleasant.... (and that's coming from person who can have PSL all year long) We will most likely come back (location, location, location....) hoping to get better barista. So if you are the owner, please provide better training and I am sure it could easily become one of my favorite spots. read more
