Customers beware! I needed two trim plates for a lock I was installing and made the mistake of going to Area Safe and lock. Parts were hanging on the wall and I took them to the counter with the price tag ($14.95ea) facing up so the clerk could see them. I was advised that was an old price and the current price was $38ea. I questioned their pricing policies and was told the owner John has them doing their pricing on a daily basis because prices change every couple of months and not to be using price tags any longer? I recently locked myself out of my apartment. I was only stepping out to go downstairs for laundry and happened to lock the door behind me out of habit. To make matters worse, I had just begun boiling water on the stove to make lunch just before I walked out the door. Excellent service by Jim. I moved into a new home so did the typical lock rekeying. I took the first appointment of the day because I hate long arrival windows, and he called me when he was 10 minutes out (ended up arriving 10 minutes early). Two deadbolts, made slightly more "interesting" by the fact that they were electronic keypad locks as well as deadbolts. Jim easily took off the locks, gave me some tips on how to best manage electronic keypad locks since it was my first time owning one, and wrapped up in about 45 minutes total. Half of that time he spent in the van doing the actual rekeying and hammering out the keys. He also noticed one of the deadbolts was slightly catching on the door frame when the deadbolt was engaging. Seemed to bother him more than me, but he took an extra 5 minutes to bend a metal piece to make it completely smooth. He was very conversational and provided me some useful information about home locks and locksmith services I may need down the line, and made corny jokes along the way. If the service being amazing wasn't good enough, they were also slightly less expensive than another locksmith that I contacted for a quote. Two deadbolt rekeys with 4 original keys provided at the end for $150. Highly recommended, great service, good price, and extremely competent. read more

Area Safe & Lock has all the "key" things we needed (I know, bad lock humor) for two issues at our DC company, the first in the summer of 2016 and most recently last week. I was referred to them by one of their large residential customers in Arlington, and after frantically calling locksmiths all over DC who advertised emergency service (but couldn't make it for a few days, two did not show at all), I smartened up and called AS&L. Robin scheduled it all for me last year, I knew what time they would arrive, and the two guys last summer were great. After an employee termination last week, we needed 10 locks changed with a couple of strange components involved. Robin scheduled JD to come out, he called me to let me know he was on his way and he solved our problem (well, at least the ones related to locks) in under 4 hours. He also had a few good tips and hilarious stories, which are always appreciated. "A Rip-Off" My experience wasn't one warranting five stars. Far from it. Coming or going, just for them to ring your doorbell will cost you about $200. They've got that policy all squared away. Even if it's something simple to fix, and they only stay fifteen minutes, you're going to get gouged for $200. They tell you about this pirate policy up front, but they know they've got you over a barrel. They can make money hand over fist without doing this, but they do it anyway, because they've figured out they can get away with it. It may take food off the plates of your children, but, hey, who has a conscience these days? When they're done, they'll even tell you why what they've done for you is "a favor." read more

I have been using ASL for several years and continued to be impressed by their knowledge and expertise. Initially, they handled the locks for my condo and most recently my home. Today, I called because our 1936 original door hardware decided to lock us out of the house. Within an hour, Darren was at our home and repairing the lock to perfect working order. Previous attempts to repair the door hardware were unsuccessful with some providers telling us that it would cost hundreds of dollars for it to work again. We needed to get our doors rekeyed ASAP, and from the initial phone call, Robin was very helpful - offered to send someone out first thing in the morning. Their prices were not just competitive, but lower than the four other locksmiths I spoke to. They did not charge us for providing multiple new keys. The locksmith arrived on time, exactly when they said they would; and he was very fast - it was done within 30 minutes. We were already more than pleased with their level of customer service, but what happened next deserves a ten-star review! these guys were on the pricey side. I went with them because they were the same locksmith company that installed the previous locks, and one of the few in the area certified to work on Mul-T Locks. I had to get 4 locks rekeyed, two for the front door, and 2 in the backyard. they charge 15/key copy for the Mul-T lock keys. they also charge a 75 dollar labor, which I wasn't told about when I got a quote on the phone. Jim, the locksmith was very nice, explaining and answering any question I had. all told, It totaled nearly 450 for all the work. Realize, prices may vary, as the locks I have are the higher end, very secure kind. you get what you pay for, and I sure paid a pretty penny, but feel they did a quality job. read more

Same day service. Front lock was working intermittently. I could not count on my front door unlocking. Sometimes I had to use the back door. That was a real safety issue. If Freddy Krueger blasted through my rear door, I would never have escaped through my front door. And those knives for fingers would have done a real job on me!! Freddie is one creepy guy! To the rescue came Jim! All I needed was for both dead bolts to be cleaned and lubed. Jim is one charming guy. Very affable. And he knows his stuff. He handed me his card when finished. Not only have they been very helpful & extremely quick with the turnaround, but they have been reasonably priced in a way I am not used to seeing out of locksmiths. I called Area Safe & Lock to set up an appointment to have the locks in my new house re-keyed. The receptionist was great and they were available at the time that I requested. However, the locksmith was scheduled to arrive between 3-4, he arrived at 4:15. I never received a phone call from him to notify me that he would not be on time, it was only when I called the main office was I told that he actually was still coming. I REALLY wanted to give this company a better review... I had my locks rekeyed back in March and had an extremely good experience working with Robin and scheduling someone to come out. They were recommended to me by my realtor. They arrived promptly, were able to re-key the locks, and the service was very reasonably priced. In April the bottom lock on the front door jammed, and the key actually got stuck in the door until we could finally yank it out after 20 minutes and some WD-40. We used the back door for a couple days until they were able to accommodate our schedules and get someone out there. Bottom lock has worked smoothly since. Last week at the end of June, the dead bolt broke-- it's stuck inside the door. I called last week, set up a service appointment. But then had to call back again this morning because no one had called or shown up. Apparently there's only a 90-day warranty on their locks, so I would've been charged for this service visit! I'm very disappointed with the quality of the initial work. These locks should not have both broken over the last three months, and the warranty on their work should certainly be longer than 90 days. Can I give them SIX stars? These guys are the best! Personable and helpful. And, most importantly for me, if you have an older, particularly European car, they have the machinery to cut STEEL keys. Based on a recent experience at a competitor, the capability of locksmiths to cut steel keys is a rarity. According to B#$^(%&#, NOBODY in the United States cuts steel keys. That they are good at what they do leaves no questions. New locks work so smoothly you don't hear them and barely feel them engage. What was extra special for me though are the things that happened without my saying anything. When contacting the company I talked to Bob and explained I needed all my exterior locks changed due to family "issues." He asked me to describe my locks and was able to give me an accurate quote on the spot, over the phone, while trying to let me keep as much current hardware as possible. While I did not ask for expedited service, Bob quietly understood my predicament, he treated me like an old friend, and arranged for someone to be at the house the next morning by 9 AM! This was completely unexpected. My technician was Vince. Before I lost use of one of my hands from a stroke, I used to work on an old car and was able to fix things around the house myself. After Vince left, I discovered all the things I had over time been putting up with for so long that they barely annoyed me anymore. From the house settling, locks and bolts on two entry doors weren't aligned with the strike plates - he fixed them, at no charge. On another entry door, the door threshold was loose - he fixed it, no charge. In addition to getting locks replaced, best of all was all using my knee or foot to get doors closed has ended. Jiggling locks to get them open is no more. Worrying if I'll get the dead bolt back open once I've engaged it is over. But, there's more. The handle on my front storm door had come off so many times I eventually said screw it and for years just used my finger in the hole to open it. Vince asked if I had the parts, I did, he fixed it so it would never come off again, at no cost. As great as all that was, what I liked best was this: there was a note on my back door - "DO NOT LOCK KNOB" - as it was common for me to rush out to do something and lock myself out (yes, I am a complete airhead). Without saying a word he installed a knob that would unlock when you turned it to go out. Pretty simple to him, but his attention and solution to a detail that would have not occurred to me to ask about was pretty damn special to me. As I started with, their professionalism is beyond reproach, but the overall experience was great! read more
