Well, this is basically a sun shine's on a dog's arse very once in a while. I Don't know how we got this on our radar, but as soon as we had free time we high tailed it up to Brooklyn Park in high anticipation of a meal we so rarely get to enjoy because we either have to amble on down to Eden Prairie, or S. MPLS. So here we are, an Arepa restaurant in our area! The restaurant is clean but, small. there are four tables and a high top thas sits four as well. the decor is spartan, but let's be honest you are coming here for the food. Beverages are limited to cans of pop, and water. There is a brewery right next door, and you can get your food to go and go next door for a beer and enjoy your food. I will say we were not disappointed once our order showed up to our table, and this is now my FAVORITE place in NW area for the twin cities. We ordered Carne Mechabo, Arepa Pabellon, and an Arepa with black bean. These were all amazing, and more importantly a mere 10 minute drive from my house. Arepas on the Go, a casual eatery serving up Venezuelan street food--not to be confused with fast food--has been serving the Twin Cities for 2 years and opened a brick-and-mortar location earlier this year in Brooklyn Park. The location is easily accessible, with ample parking available. Arepas on the Go offers counter-style service, available for dine-in or takeout. The staff is pleasant and amicable. The interior decor is a love letter to Venezuela's beauty. As a family-owned and operated business, selling authentic Venezuelan comfort meals, they cook all food to order. Depending on your order, the wait time may vary while greatness is prepared. I appreciate this approach to cooking because, for this type of cuisine, reheating wouldn't be authentic or tasty. Made-to-order is the way to go for this cuisine, so if you're in a rush, I'd advise visiting when you can spare the time to wait while your meal is prepared the way it's meant to be enjoyed. I will admit I came across a problem. I did not know what to choose. The menu is vast with SO many good options: Arepas, Empanadas, Cachapas, Sandwiches de Patacon, to name a few. After debating back and forth and compromising with returning a second time to try what I didn't during this visit, I ordered: - Build [my] Own Arepa: Fried or Baked, I chose a baked arepa. This resulted in a crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, warm white corn masa, which I filled with chicken, carne asada (grilled steak), black beans, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and grated white cheese. I appreciated the seasoning in all of the proteins. Speaking of proteins, I'd also like to applaud the quality and home-cooked taste of the black beans. My friends, NO canned beans touch this greatness. And as if the arepa wasn't delicious on its own, I added their house garlic cilantro "tartar" (sauce) to the arepa filling; BANGER! This dish was hearty, layered in flavors, and incredibly filling. They offer many variations of arepas, so if you're undecided like me, you won't regret starting here. - Empanadas: I ate a trio of all the empanadas, taking advantage of a 6 for $12.99 empanada special. As soon as the empanadas were delivered to my table, I immediately picked up on the smell of the sweet, fried corn dough. A nostalgic smell and taste. All of the empanadas were fried perfectly. The sweetness of the empanada shell balanced well with all the savory fillings, though some were better than others. The cheese empanada was the least of my favorites. Unfortunately, as soon as I bit into the empanada, all the cheese would come in one bite, leaving the rest of the empanada shell empty. This was exclusive to the cheese ones. The chicken option was good. My absolute favorite I'd order again were the beef empanadas. Tender, shredded beef packed with robust Creole seasonings --I could've easily eaten 20 of these beef empanadas. - Cachapa: a pancake-style dish, stuffed with Venezuelan cheese and cooked on the griddle, this sweet and savory combination was another smash hit. Served with a silky fresh crema, this layered empanada-like "stuffed pancake" had a multitude of tasty yet straightforward flavors. Other options include pork, chicken, or steak, but I was told Cheese was the original and best way to go if trying for the first time :) - CepiFruit: A sweet ending to a filling meal, this strawberry and condensed milk blended drink was layered with mango and strawberries. It was a unique drink and would be appreciated most by true sweet-tooth fanatics. This could be enjoyed as a treat on its own, but for me, it was too much to finish along with everything else I sampled. Overall, my visit to Arepas on the Go was a total success. From sampling their version of a familiar favorite Arepa to trying the new-to-me Cachapa, I'm thrilled to happily recommend Arepas on the Go to anyone who asks me about my experience. We were thrilled to find a new Venezuelan spot just north of the Twin Cities! This is perfect for those days when we don't feel like making our own Venezuelan goodies. We had two adults with an appetite and this was far too much food for us. Tequeños: classic, cheese-filled pastry, paired beautifully with the guasacaca sauce (green sauce) Cachapa: sweet corn paired with salty cheese and pork belly, messy to eat but a glorious combo Arepa: this was filled to the brim, just like street vendors in VZ, however the base did get soggy making it difficult to eat Empanada de Queso: crunchy and full of cheese, a staple for us Sweet plantains: basic but exactly what you'd expect from fried sweet plantains Note this location has limited seating and feels more designed for take away/take out. Considering it's primarily street food, it would be perfect after a couple of pints at the brewery next door. Definitely worth trying. We plan to return and try the sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs. read more

We went to check out the new restaurant. Excited to see arepa in the suburbs. Colorful restaurant and mural on their wall. Restaurant has tables for dine in, not for large parties. Order at the counter and they'll call you once it's ready. I ordered the arepa combo, you get 2 for $20. One chicken and one beef, side of yucca fries. Must eat them while warm, otherwise it's hard when cold. Beef empanada were ok, the breading was not crispy. The cheese on the arepa doesn't melt and you get alot stuffed in the arepa. They gave me a green sauce, this was their official sauce. Wished I asked for hot sauce. read more

Stopped in here after dropping my dog off at the Stone Mountain Pet Lodge just across the lot. From a glance this looks like a fast casual Venezuelan restaurant specializing in street food. This review is pretty divided in that the service I'd rate a 1 or 2, but the food is at least a 4. Here's how my visit went down. Came in at noon to get lunch to-go. "Arepas On The Go" sounded like a good spot to get some takeout. This place is counter service, and the guy behind the counter handed me a menu and said he'd be right back. And I waited, and waited, and waited. And four minutes of just standing at the counter I honestly would have just left but I don't like reviewing a place without trying the food. In all he was gone for over six minutes. There are a lot of places where I'd have ordered and been out the door in less time than this took. I wanted the carne asada lunch platter they had on the menu. He tells me they don't have that. I ask if they're out of carne asada and he says no, they just stopped selling it as a lunch platter but left it on the menu. I end up getting a different platter that had shredded beef instead, along with maduras (sweet plaintains) and fried smashed green plaintains. He asks if I'd like sauce and I say yes. This ends up being another $0.75 upcharge since it's to-go (I see the same sauce in bottles on the tables). And so I sit and wait, and wait, and wait. My food finally comes out at 12:32. This "On The Go" restaurant with a sign saying "street food" took over a half hour. Make of that what you will, but this was way, way beyond what I was expecting going in, and I wouldn't have come if I thought it was going to take even half that long to get out the door. And when I get to the car I open the bag and that sauce I'd paid extra for was missing. I had to go back in a second time to get it. As for the food itself, I can't complain. It was tasty. The maduras were slightly crisped and sweet, and the crushed green plaintains come out like thick potato chips and were good with the sauce (I think they'd be dry and not that good without). I do get frustrated if a place serves food that needs sauce and then charges you for the sauce as extra. The rice came with a fried egg on top, and the egg was nicely seasoned and crisped just enough for a good texture contrast. The shredded beef was good but I absolutely would have preferred the carne asada. The only way I'd come back would be with ordering ahead online and just picking the food up, assuming they can actually get it done on time. As a spot to come get some fast street food for lunch, this didn't hit the mark. read more

I happened across this place while I was in Brooklyn Park near lunch time and I used the Find Me Gluten Free app (I have celiac disease so have to be pretty picky about where I eat or else I pay the price!). I had never heard of an arepa before and it sounded pretty interesting, so I decided to give it a shot. WOW! I was so happy I did because it was absolutely delicious! I had the pollo asada and chorizo (grilled chicken and sausage) arepa frita (fried) and it blew me away! I live a good 20 min. drive away from this place but I make a point to go back for the same arepa just about once a week. They have a huge menu and everything sounds amazing, but I haven't ventured away from the arepa just yet...the mini empanadas are GF as well and sound really good, but I get so full from the arepa that I just haven't tried anything else! read more

Kind staff brought over a full platter for us to try a bunch of food, grabbed extra chairs for us after we ordered, handed the kids each a treat, and lifted our youngest right onto her chair. I tried this place several times when they were in the curry ave multi-restaurant venue and the food is not bad. Well, actually let me clarify that they sell a lot of bad food, as in junk food, but they prepare them fine. However, they are expensive when one considers the ingredients, which are mostly the same as cheaper Mexican restaurants. Anyway, then I noticed they were close by in Brooklyn Park and in their own place (not a multi-restaurant venue concept) and I decided to step in. I immediately left for three reasons 1.- When I heard the loud music they were playing inside their restaurant. It sounded like a brothel since they appear to be always playing dance porno music. 2.- When I saw their menu and was reminded of their unreasonably high pricing. 3.- Then, I noticed how the place was entirely empty. not a single customer. Of course not, I went to Freddy's next door and spent way less and there was no loud music discussing human mating styles or something. read more

This is our first time eating here and without a doubt it is the best Venezuelan food in Minnesota. Their flavors are excellent and are easily on par or better than some of the best places in Venezuela itself. Their Pollo y Chorizo (chicken and sausage) arepa is off the charts amazing! Food flavor was good. Not great, I've been to Venezuela and had arepas. I definitely did not feel the nostalgic experience I have when I go to a restaurant serving food from another country. Something was off, in their spice blend. The service was not good. I observed staff eating food in the kitchen prep area, which I believe is not sanitary according to Minnesota health code.
