Ariake is that blind date that you expected to go better. Your friends keep telling you how cool she is (look at those 4-5 star reviews), and when you finally meet, you think *aw HELL yeah she's a sexy brunette* (pretty decor: muted lighting and lovely wood accents, rock fountain outside). You exchange elevator eyes, and debate briefly between a handshake or a hug for that first meeting (sushi chef nods in welcome, smiling waitress pops up within seconds to take you to a table). She's dressed to impress (straw and lemon wedge for the water without asking) and the conversation's pleasant (customers are all couples and working professionals). The hour hand points higher. That part of the night's rolling around and you both know there's enough chemistry, so she asks you in (clean bathroom, big TV near the bar). The foreplay is alright (cute place setting), just a few awkward tongue clashes (miso was standard, salad dressing was carroty but alright, though the lettuce could've been chopped into smaller bite-sized pieces). You're excited at the prospect of getting head ("I'll have the hamachi kama appetizer"), and it's a rough start but you adjust and enjoy (one corner is burnt, otherwise the jaw meat is cooked well; ponzu sauce with adjustable heat is an okay pairing but the fish stands better on its own). So you get down and dirty ("I'll also try the assorted sushi entree"), and the goods look... well, good (average sized cuts, nice knifework, plump but uneven maki rolls). But when the deed's done, you realize you're not that into her, and really you've been with better and worse (okay quality fish for the suburbs, wish the rice had been molded tighter). Eh, nothing spectacular or strikingly memorable. Not sure why Ariake has a 4 star rating Reasons I will not be back: - Sloooooow service. I'm actually quite surprised that no one has mentioned their slower-than-death service. I've been here twice; the first time it was packed on a Saturday night at peak dinner hours and it took one hour for the food to come out. Okay, I dismissed that and came back, this time at 5:30 on Friday when there were barely any people, and it still took 35 minutes for the sushi to arrive. I noticed that what they do here is bring out your entire order all on one big platter (unless you get appetizers..we didn't) and this makes for a ridiculous wait time. - The rolls aren't great and they're overpriced for what it is. Since my mom only likes rolls, we got their Dragon Roll ($13.95) and it was mediocre compared to what I've had at other restaurants. If I *had* to come back I would stick to ordering their nigiri and sashimi. I will say that the Chef's Omakase that I had last time was pretty good but it didn't justify the one hour wait... The food isn't bad but service could be better. read more

Decently fresh sushi, but average overall, as well as a bit on the bland side in taste. This establishment is located next to a neighborhood in its own little house. We made the mistake of thinking it was in the strip mall across the street. I loved that I felt like I was in Japan upon stepping foot into the door, and the service was exceptionally friendly. The atmosphere felt authentic, calm, and spacious. The sushi rolls were quality, yet lacked a wow factor in flavor. The fish was fresh and the rice was cooked perfectly, however the rice did not seem to have enough rice vinegar or flavor. This left the sushi bland, and it did not help that they squeeze regular mayo onto their sushi instead of a more flavorful compliment such as spicy mayo. Because the sushi was not flavorful enough, their spider roll and rolls that included shrimp tempura had a distinctive fried taste that was not masked with a usual spicy mayo or eel sauce. The sushi here is also a bit more expensive than its competitors in the area, but it is an okay alternative for when I'm far too lazy to drive too far. read more

How have I not written a review for this restaurant before? I love this place and I've been here numerous times over the last few years. It is definitely in the top five nova places for sushi. Their Toro is always fresh and their rolls are very creative and super tasty. I really like the super tuna roll. Honestly the ambience here is just so cozy and that makes part of this five star review for sure. There is a reason that this restaurant is busy even on Monday nights! Their yakisoba with chicken is delicious and so flavorful. It has a lot of sauce which is also really good. The dinner bento boxes are a massive amount of food but everything in them is just so yummy! I love their shrimp shumai. Tempura is good, teriyaki is yummy too. The rundown. Pretty good. The sushi is good and the cuts here are fresh, the nabeyaki udon is very good and just perfect for cold days, the toro (special expensive belly cuts of sashimi) was a little lacking in quality. I really don't have much to say beyond that. This is a good spot no doubt. I recommend the nabeyaki udon and the rainbow and dragon rolls (which were the best rolls of the night). Though I would come here again, there were no dishes that were particularly memorable or outstanding. The service was standard and adequate, the decor was adequate. On a tip from a coworker, a few of us went here for lunch, and it was great. He claimed it was the best sushi in Reston outside of the Town Center. I don't frequent the Town Center, so OK! I got the sushi/sashimi combo, with side of toro (fatty tuna). I got a green tea to start, and then the classic iceberg salad with orange ginger dressing came out, as did our miso soup. Both standard, soup was hot, salad was crispy. Nothing too impressive about either, but they were good to start with. Our food came out pretty quickly even though the restaurant was pretty full. It looked good and tasted even better. We split the Godzilla roll, and that thing was massive if a little messy. It was super tasty with tamago strewn on it and topped with spicy mayo sauce. Just right! They also had fresh wasabi, which is always a treat. There seemed to be some kind of outdoor seating that was all locked up because it is winter, but I've never seen an outdoor sushi place, so that was neat. If you're out near Reston, and have a hankering for some good sushi, check this place out. I highly recommend it. read more

I had been wanting to try Ariake for a while and finally got around to it. The sashimi was very fresh and the tuna and avocado roll was very good. Their miso soup was also excellent. I can see why they have great reviews and they were also really busy for takeout on a Saturday night. I give 4 stars instead of 5 because their prices are a bit high comparably. read more

I usually rate purely on the food served, so Covid continues to make reviews a bit easier. I have eaten at Ariake Reston seven times in the past year. Every time I have order the sashimi deluxe. I order sashimi nearly every time I eat at legit area sushi bars. My monthly order of sashimi deluxe has been a highly satisfactory experience at Ariake. The chef's choice of two to three types of tuna have been very flavorful, firm fleshed, and a healthy thick cut. The fish has stood on its own, best eaten without soy sauce or horseradish as it is better quality. The accompanying salmon and red snapper have also had a similar flesh, also with a very good flavor profile. Ariake does a nice job of including small sea salty seaweed pieces with different textures and chewiness. It is an acquired taste, but a good addition along with a fragrant couple of leafy herbs. In essence, Ariake has been at the 4.5 to 5 star level for my numerous visits. However, for my last two orders of sashimi deluxe, I clearly notice a change in the thickness of the cuts being slightly reduced, with flounder and octopus replacing one of the tunas and the red snapper (it is chef's choice, but I do not prefer this assortment). Also, for this last order a few days ago, one of the tuna and the salmon were slightly softer (not totally mushy). They did not have the firmness I have found in all my other orders. I will look to see if this continues, or was just a one off evening. I would give 4.5 if I could, but give 4 stars for my last two visits. I will update and give another review after my next visit. read more

Current favorite sushi restaurant. Very fresh and great special rolls. Recommend the Florida roll for salmon lovers. I came here for dinner four times in the past two weeks and it was always busy and we had to wait about 15-20 min each time but once seated, food came out pretty quickly. read more

I love sushi/sashimi and this place got fresh sushi/sashimi. Their rolls are delicious!! One of my favorite restaurant in Reston, VA!! My experience dining in has been pleasant with pretty good service. They do get pretty busy on Fridays and Saturdays, so if you plan to dine in...maybe call ahead to get wait time or make reservation. This is my go-to sushi restaurant to dine-in and for take-out orders...and occasionally do catering for family get togethers. When my husband and I dine-in (most the the time). We get our own sushi or sashimi picked out from their sushi/sashimi menu. We usually get salmon, tuna, toro, uni, fatty salmon, fresh scallops, unagi and sometimes get tamago (egg omelette). For the rolls, we love getting Spicy Scallop Roll!! We almost every time get this roll. And we also get spider roll. If I eat alone, I usually get their chirashi bowl. Loaded with fresh thick cut sashimi with seasoned rice under. This bowl costs roughly around $15 for lunch and $29 for dinner. I would definitely recommend Ariake if you are in the area and craving sushi. read more

My son's favorite food is sushi. He loves it! We recently moved. And this is a favorite of people who live near us. I wasn't particularly impressed on our first trip. I also wasn't feeling well that day, so I waited in the car while my family finished. I decided recently to try again. My son requested it specifically since they have avocado balls ( ? I think that's what it is he wants ?). So we went. We enjoyed ourselves so much. The food was really good! So we returned a week later! We will definitely be back. We'll see if this becomes a favorite. We do still miss the sushi restaurant in our old town, though. read more

I've been basically going to this place for my entire life, and they never disappoint in any aspect. Great ambiance indoors and outdoors, diverse menu whether you're ordering for lunch or dinner. I tend to start off with miso soup and salad and order assorted fish from the a la carte menu thereafter, and the presentation of the sashimi/sushi is beautiful every time when I dine in. My wife and I along with all my siblings love the sushi here. Bit pricy, but very good quality and very fresh. Every time we go to Ariake it is quite busy, big surprise. Had a craving for good sushi... and loved the pictures and reviews... I WAS NOT disappointed. Very fresh - excellent service - FAST - great miso/tofu soup and small salad while I was waiting for lunch special. The restaurant was nicely decorated and very clean... wait staff and sushi chefs very friendly. Had one of the lunch specials - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white tuna - VERY fresh and tasty... added a California roll to really fill me up.. and it sure did. Tasty and wonderfully made. Highly recommend! I will be back - adding it to my lunch rotation.. hard part will be trying to stay away and not having sushi every day... it was that good read more

The sushi here is also much more diverse and noticeably fresher than what you'd find at a typical Chinese buffet. I really hope they continue operating this way. For that to happen, they'll need to keep a steady flow of customers, and so far, it's always been busy whenever I visit. On top of that, the dinner price is under $30, which makes it an incredible value.
