This is a pretty good Japanese restuarants. They have a pretty good sushi and I really like the fried California rolls. It's also at a good price for what you get. I like the soba noodles with shrimp tempura. They also have a big screen TV, which is a little out of place... The waitstaff is nice as well. But do yourself a favor, don't make an ass out of your ignorant self and try to speak Japanese to the servers 'cause the restaurant is Korean owned and have mostly Korean servers. read more

The food was anemic at best. I can't compare this restaurant to Osaka or even House of Teriyaki (or even Butterfly). The food was pricey for what I got. Chicken Karaage tasted like chicken thighs deep fried (compare this to HOT's Karaage). The Beef Curry tasted of microwave origins and the Ramen was literally Maruchan + oil + half an egg + 3 pieces of beef. Sushi was half the size of the pieces we have at Umass Dining Commons. The bill was $42 and my stomach ached afterwards. The waitstaff was nice, and I'm sure they don't purposely make the dishes mediocre. However, this simply wasn't Japanese food at its best or even on an off day. Note that the food is pricey in a relative comparison against local eateries. I didn't expect too much coming in here because I knew that the yelp reviews weren't great, but I was craving sushi so bad so me and my boyfriend went in anyways, and boy was I glad we did! We ordered the Salmon combo, jalapeño bombs, spicy jambbong. All of which were delicious. The salmon combo was fresh, and the portion sizes of the sashimi slices and nigiri were nice and big for the price. The jalapeño bombs were so packed with flavor, they were delicious! I try to visit all the sushi places in the Happy Valley. I had the Sushi/Sashimi Lunch Special. I was very impressed by the quality of the fish, the aesthetic presentation, and the value (low price). The lunch special came with miso soup and a small salad. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted real good to me. The service was attentive, not overbearing or negligent. The atmosphere was pleasant and not loud. The place was clean as well. They must have a loyal volume of customers, because their prices were quite reasonable as compared to the Amherst downtown high rent district they are located in. We were in the mood for Japanese food on Christmas Eve and decided to give this place a try. We walked in and were greeted by a friendly waitstaff. While we were waiting for the take out order, they even offered us tea. We ordered two orders of sashimi, fatty tuna and mackrel, and two rolls. I forgot what the rolls were called, but they ended up being exactly the same rolls, except one had tuna on top, and the other had eel. The rice on the rolls were thick, and the fish was not fresh. The slices of sashimi were very thin. We were also surprised that they gave us tuna sashimi instead of mackrel. People that work there are very nice, but the food is just not good. Every time I come to Arigato, I have a bizarre experience. It's almost as if the wait staff are generally bamboozled, frazzled, hoodwinked--I'm out of synonyms. But seriously, the last time I was here they gave me had rolls instead of maki--it was takeout, and I should've checked before I left but I didn't. That's partially on me, admittedly. The time before that, while dining in, it took around 15 minutes to get water for our table and another 10 to see our server again to get food. And don't get me wrong: the sushi and other food I've had on the menu is good. But it's these other bizarre experiences that make this place so . . . meh. read more

We were freezing and waiting for a movie to start across the street. This restaurant beckoned. We were seated right away at a table of our choice. H ordered tempura appetizer which came with two shrimp and five veggies. I had bento box A, substituting tuna roll for Cali roll at no charge. We also had hot sake and green tea. Food and drinks came quickly. The food was terrific. I wasn't a fan of the small green salad which was smothered with dressing that did not have much flavor. The miso soup was hot but nothing special. However the food was outstanding. Tempura was not greasy or soggy--perfectly flash fried. Bento box shumai and teriyaki were generous and well cooked with lots of flavor. Reasonable prices for a lot of very good food and fine service. read more

The server was friendly to the people next to us and chatted with them the whole time we were there. I found it unpleasant if not impolite and unprofessional. Also, she (the server) interjected in the middle of my ordering to talk to my kid and told me that my daughter had a question. So as the mother, (15 years exp as a mom, 20 exp as a nanny & babysitter) I didn't already talk to my daughter 6 times about getting avocado sushi, and was asking her to be polite and wait her turn to talk, since I was in the middle of trying to tell the server what I wanted for a drink/food?? In a small town in the middle of Massachusetts I was not anticipating coming across a great sushi joint. With efficient, caring service and fresh seafood, Arigato Sushi gets 4 stars in my book. We shared the Bento box, with teriyaki chicken on a tasty bed of sautéed vegetables, crispy and light tempura shrimp and veggies, and a nice fresh California roll. Additionally we added the Hawaiian roll, a fresh tuna and avocado roll topped with a sweet eel sauce. As I always say, a tasty sauce makes a good meal great. Overall very positive experience at Arigato Sushi- while it's no bay side San Francisco fish house, it definitely does the job for an ocean deprived college girl. read more

This is the best sushi place in Amherst. Take it from the son of a sushi restaurant owner who has tried all different kinds of sushi. Their sashimi is fresh and it really melts in your mouth. Horribly disappointing. I would have asked for my money back but I didn't open up my to-go bag until I got back home. I got a salmon roll from them last week and it was super small, and mostly just rice and seaweed with a little bit of salmon. And not even any avocado or cucumber or anything. Plus it smelled bad and was warm, like the fish had been sitting out on the counter at room temperature for a long time. It was so unappetizing looking and smelling that I didn't even want to try it, and was honestly afraid I would get sick if I did. Will never go again. The food was just okay, but the service was horrible: Four of us were seated at 6:00, but our orders weren't taken until 6:30, Around 7, our soup/salad was brought out. At 7:30, a server seeing our distress, asked if we were ready for our check. Honestly, we just about were--but our meals had not yet arrived. At 7:50 three of us got our meals, which we just about finished by the time the 4th meal was delivered at 8:15. Arrrgh! Sadly, I still left a tip--but I wish I hadn't. Very friendly staff and quick service. We got four different veggie rolls, and they were all delicious. We had to order a second one of the tofu tempura rolls! My wife and I were so pleasantly surprised by our first experience at Arigato. The service was excellent; our server was friendly and attentive and answered our questions with ease. One of the nicest surprises was the ginger dressing on the little salad that arrived, along with miso soup (that wasn't overly salty which we appreciated). I've had this dressing before (and actually had it the day after!) and yet this one was so much better; it was really fresh and a little sweet, and the server told us it had carrots in it. (The next day at a different place, it was too salty and more brown/unappealing.) Anyway, the sushi was really good too; we had a salmon special of some kind that had it three ways, and it was really fresh and delicious. Highly underrated. By West Coast standards, the sushi here is just acceptable, but in truth, that label probably applies to all sushi in New England. So it's a bit of an unfair scale. Considered in its Massachusetts context, Arigato actually offers some of the best sushi in the West Mass area (just short of Goten). I love the food here. The sushi is delicious and the waitstaff are the most friendly of any restaurant I've been to. I didn't know anything about sushi before going there and they helped me pick out some sushi that was delicious. Ok, the sushi at Osaka is a bit better, but the waiters at Osaka are all only concerned with getting you out the door so they can get another couple seated. After the alma mater's football game I had a craving for sushi. Been meaning to stop in here on my previous trips back to Amherst, but this was the first chance I had to try the restaurant. It was well lit, and very nicely decorated. Staff was friendly. I received a small cup of edamame to try as I sat down. The waitress promptly came over and took my order. I ordered a sushi dinner and the chefs quickly went to work. As I waited for the sushi, I was served up a bowl of miso soup and a small ginger salad. Both were good. Then the fish arrived........Salmon, mackerel, surf clam, shrimp, yellowtail, red snapper and white tuna........prepared well and very fresh. My son and I are frequent flyers here! We come here at least twice a month if not more.. They are very friendly and always greet us right away! We have been coming here for 3 years now and there has been one time that we waited longer than usual however the restaurant was jammed pack big parties were dining and it was our choice to wait knowing we would enjoy our dinner. I have been to multiple different sushi joints and this is the best one yet! I do not think that it's over priced compared to the other places we have been! this a review based on only one meal there, so take it for what it is, i don't think i'll be going back so if i'm going to write it i've got to write it now. i wandered in here on a whim on a saturday looking for a bite to eat, ended up ordering a dinner bento combo box, which included miso soup, salad, shumai, tempura, beef teriyaki, some nigiri sushi, and a california roll. a few things - the tempura, and the shumai - were pretty good, but all in all this was really not good food, and the price - $18 and change - was high enough that they don't really have any excuse. arigato seems to suffer from a common amherst restaurant syndrom (ARS) where a place can get by offering a passable attempt at a cuisine at higher-than-normal prices simply because they are the only game in town. anyhow, as i said, the tempura and shumai were fine, nothing special but definitely no complaints. as for the rest, well, i never expect much from a california roll, and this was no exception. the tuna (one of my three pieces of sushi) actually tasted off, a little old, the salad was overdressed with a way-too-watery dressing, and the beef teriaki was so dried-out and leathery with overcooking that i took one bite, then another to confirm, and left the rest on my plate. my waited asked if i didn't like it and i told him it was dried out and not very good, but no effort was made to apologize, offer to make me a new one, or comp it on the bill. i suppose this could be an ok place to go back for a cheap lunch special with low expectations, but all in all, it was not very good. wish i had skipped it and gone just about anywhere else. read more

This place gains a star for my recent lunch visit. Tea was perfectly brewed, miso soup was hot and well prepared. Salad was cold and fresh, dressed with a tangy ginger dressing. BiBimBop was terrific and came with a spicy sauce and the vegetable box had lots of variety. This is a great place for lunch it is much more affordable than it is at dinner. I came to this restaurant on an empty stomach after a few college tours. Luckily, I was served salad with ginger dressing within minutes. I usually hate salad, but this was pretty good. The ingredients were fresh and the dressing was on point :D As I was waiting for the appetizers, I looked around. The place was very clean and the the atmosphere was calm. The appetizers were vegetable dumplings and vegetable tempura. The dumplings were fresh, warm, and flavorful. The tempura was good too; it's hard to go wrong with that. My main course was a crunchy eel sushi roll. I was beyond impressed. The flavor combination was flawless, and the presentation was just as good. It was some of the best sushi I'd ever had. So disappointing. I ordered a spicy sashimi bowl for lunch and was given tiny chopped up scraps that equaled about two regular sized pieces of sashimi, half of which was frozen solid. I 've been here twice now and both times I was served fish that was frozen. When I politely complained I was told that the fish was supposed to be served this way! The frozen fish was watery and disgusting. Overall the food was horrible and they didn't seem to care that I felt that way. read more
