Some people like to shop at Neiman's, others like to shop Flowers. For me, this place is like Disneyland. I live for Armstrong. Each location has its own essence and selection of items. I love the fountains, the vast array of fruit trees, annuals and perennials. The classes they offer are super fun and the people who teach them are a pure joy to be around, especially at the San Juan Capistrano location. I only wish they carried any sort of Falcon shears made in Switzerland. Just like hair dressers invest in expensive sheers to do their job, i like investing mine in gardening sheers. This location is twice as big as the one closer to my home, but absolutely great because of great customer service. I takes me 30 min. to get here from home, but I would do it again given the wonderful customer service I received from Drew. When I called to inquire about Peperomia, Drew was able to assist me over the phone with my questions. Then when I came in person to the store, Drew took the time to help me understand the different peperomia plants and how to care for them. Drew was incredibly patient and kind throughout the whole process and I am grateful for individuals like Drew who are both knowledgeable to helpful. read more

I go to this Armstrongs all the time. One of the bigger ones out this way. I ordered ground cover and it was way more lush then where I live in Yorba Linda. I was told by one of the staff how the clientele expect more in this area. The people working g here are as humble and kind as all of the Armstrongs I've been to. They have a large bathroom for costumers. Alot of merchandise to choose with many cards and nic knacks. read more

This is one of the best Armstrong Garden's around. We live closest to the Huntington Beach location but rather triple our drive time and stop by this one in Newport Beach. I have yet to meet anyone unfriendly or ingenuine - someone is always happy to help and in fact they go the extra mile. Without fail, we always happen to get fungal gnats in our indoor house plants. Despite using neem oil religiously, we can't get rid of those darn critters. I forget the name of the helpful associate (an older lady who said she's been there for 12 years), but she told us to use specific plant sand as a top layer in our pot, because the gnats can't permeate through and lay their eggs. Additionally, we were perusing around buying supplies to spruce up our backyard, and Bryan came to the rescue and offered his help before we even asked. Not only did he offer a wealth of information, but he was very personable and we ended up chatting about non-gardening topics as well. I could go on about how much I love this specific store, someone is hiring right and doing a great job managing. This store also puts Roger's Gardens to shame. As beautiful as Roger's Gardens is it's impersonal, overpriced and all show with no substance. read more

We come here regularly to get flowers when we visit our loved ones at a memorial park nearby, and the staff has always gone out of their way to be helpful. I would chalk it up to getting lots of sun, fresh air, and exercise, but even compared to other nurseries, the staff here are exemplary. Today, on Lunar New Year, the sweetest woman helped us find flowers in particular colors, and as we were walking out after having bought some, she ran up with one that matched what we had been looking for and said "I'm just going to give it to you." I don't know what to say, except that this is just one of the many reasons why I am a regular at this wonderful little place. read more

Blown away!!!!!! THANK YOU for such an incredible experience!!!! We were driving by and decided to stop. I live in an apartment with tons of light, but no balcony for plants and I LOVE gardens. I wanted to see if they had indoor roses, I heard is possible but not common and I have my little rose plant but no flowers. The lady that help me was very nice and knowledgeable, VERY funny. I found out that if I want indoor roses they belong in a vase with water HAHAHAHAHA. I will be using that analogy from now on and I adore the fun honesty. We must have been greeted again at least 8x by sodden staff and always asking us if they can help. And letting us know if we do need anything they are just steps away. Great experience getting our Christmas tree; we got a beautiful 9 foot noble fir, good selection, freshly cut the night before, and easily picked a tall, full, fragrant tree--but people lined up and RAN for the silver tip trees as there were only 17 available. We were literally the only ones that were there at opening time NOT wanting that type of tree. I had no idea they were such a commodity! We picked our tree, they tagged it, we paid, and they tied it on our truck for us pretty quickly (no charge, but we tipped then all as it took 3 people to get it up there) and we were on our merry way. ANYWAY, this review really is for Bryan. He helped us with all of our needs, and is definitely the reason we spent double than what we needed to, and I have zero regrets. Whenever I'm "hiding out" & not in the mood to spend the day at the massive, crazy-crowded, fancy, valet-parking, destination garden center a few blocks away in Corona Del Mar, "Armstrong Garden Center" is my go-to spot. Located on busy Pacific Coast Highway, "Armstrong Garden Center" has plenty of quick-&-easy parking in the parking lot out front, & is a beautiful yet relaxed, low-key garden center/nursery with a nice variety of creative options for both the experienced & "newbie" gardening enthusiast. They feature gorgeous flowers, indoor & outdoor plants, fountains, healthy & organic fruit & vegetable trees & plants, seedlings, gardening tools & aids, patio decor, decorative pots, fun seasonal & unique items, & much more. It's a bit pricier than the "garden section" of your typical "big-box hardware/home retailer," but you do get what you pay for. "Armstrong Garden Center" may not be the fanciest garden center in-town, but overall the staff are friendly & helpful, & it's a very nice, pleasant, quiet, low-key yet beautiful nursery for your gardening needs. read more

Due to covid we were not able to visit many of our "date night" or "recharge" venues. My husband made it a mission to build me a Disney inspired patio that also was safe for our cats. I was surprised when we visited Armstrong and he booked a consultation. My first impression was what a waste of money. We only have a patio and there isn't much they could do. Oh trust me I was 100% wrong. The consultation was the best thing to ever happen to our home. Kamal came to our unit and listened to our desires while also giving us knowledge on the plants my husband had already purchased. He even sketched out some ideas in person and told us he'd get us a whole plan, including pricing, of what we should do to get the desired look we were shooting for. The care he took in regards to the Covid guidelines also left me at ease since I am pregnant and worried of having someone random in our space. The sketch and monetary calculations he provided were very thorough and detailed. I was over the moon impressed. Originally we had a tree and several dying plants. The bipolar California weather had most of them stressed or dead. 95% of our original plants are thriving, even some of the supposed "dead" ones. We took Kamal's advice and worked to get the plants in a healthy state. Slowly we purchased what he advised and can I say the photos speak for themselves. I wake up with a smile as I see our beautiful garden great me. The bees have just found our flowers and started crossed pollinating. If you need the best plants, excellent advice, or just want to start gardening then I'd recommend Armstrong. I'd thought I was just bad at gardening when the truth was that most other locations let me go without asking if I knew how to take care of them. Armstrong staff ask you questions, assist where needed, and also help you load your plants. They helped us load multiple plants and a tree into my mid sized suv. We are now addicted to the calm our patio brings and have gotten closer as a couple as we tend to our garden together. read more

As we are now in January, planting season for Spring blooms is upon us, and I am trying to get some trees planted for both color and shade. As with any plant, years of caring must be started early, before the fruits of your labor can be enjoyed. In my case, I lost a very large Eucalyptus tree during a windstorm a few years ago, and am now looking to fill that empty hole with a smaller but colorful shade tree for enjoyment in the next few years. They went on vacation and didn't follow up very well with their staff to inform them on the outside garden project I needed done at my house. and left me having to figure out things last minute. My dog loves this place. If you feel the need to read on before going, beware you may end up with a full on garden. We set out to Armstrong initially just to get some sod and Fertilizer to build a lawn for our pups. Little did we realize how great this place is (and this location in particular) and how enriching horticulture is. Unfortunately, we now have an entire garden of beautiful flowers and amazing fruit/herb/vegetables, and it is all this place's fault. They have a huge selection, staff who are knowledgeable and very useful with advice but without ever being pushy. Got a problem with a particular pest? They know offhand what to get to control it. Got a particular flower or shrub in mind? They know what to do to help grow or what might even be better suited for your goal. Best of all the staff also love on your dogs and have treats at the register. (My dog pulls trying to go directly to the checkout every time we walk In). I have to share one story in particular. On a very hot day, we were among the few patrons silly enough to be in the scorching heat at midday. My dog was happily panting along sniffing and enjoying pets. One of the staff was knee deep in stocking plants and saw us. She got up, said, your pup looks hot, hold on. Then she sprinted to the back, after a minute or two came back out with a CUSTOM MADE water dish she has cut to turn into a dog water dish (from one of those plastic things that go under plants to catch excess water drainage) And went to a hose, filled it up, and lugged it back to us where she plopped it in front of my elderly dog Freyja. We had water in the car for the pup obviously but she was more than happy to stop and take a drink from her custom made and poured with lode water dish (see pictures). It was really sweet gesture and emblematic of the kind and friendly attitude the people who work here have. But we don't go here just because they're nice to my dog (even if that is reason enough). It's just a one stop shop for gardening. The selection, pricing, and staff knowledge and among the reasons we continue to go here, but more than all that this place just employs good, kindhearted people. Everyone from the register staff, to the people who help load, to the people who wander about the grounds tending to the inventory. Every time we go they're polite and friendly and helpful and happy to leave us alone if we're already on track with what we want that trip. You might pay a little more than you do at a bigger retailer but the service you get is worth it. Thanks Armstrong! read more

Every so often it's nice to get some new plants to add a bit of color to a room that appears to be dead by not having any plant life to brighten it up! We go through a good amount of plants mostly because we usually buy some of the smaller herbs to grow fresh for picking when it comes to making some food that require those fresh ingredients or to rip a piece off for a quick snack for the rabbit who also lives in the house either way you can't go wrong with fresh plant goodness all year long! The selection here was pretty darn good they had an abundance of all kinds of plants from shrubs that just take up space to your beloved citrus tree that you just know you want growing outside so that you can add some fresh limes to the mix any time you wish! The fountain selection is always something they gets me I guess I'm just attracted to the sound of the falling water as it eases the ears and it just always a delightful element anywhere you find it. The store here was overall pretty awesome and full of all kinda good plant related devastation that was decently priced for what it was super stoked we stopped and brought a few green things home to grow! read more

Every single employee here is so nice and helpful! And they smile! It's like the opposite of Home Depot. The garden staff is full of knowledge and actually know where items or plants are. Many thanks to Kamal Jain at Armstrong for his help in May. I needed to fill in some spaces behind the pool in my backyard and add some color. Kamal, a landscape designer, reviewed a photo of the problem area and asked a few questions about light and my preferences. He suggested some options and helped me choose gorgeous plants and flowers that would add interest and texture to the space. Now about 6 weeks later, all the plants are thriving and look fabulous! Today I was back at Armstrong for a couple of plants to go along the driveway. Several employees asked if I need help as I wandered around, and one employee (sorry I didn't get his name) gave some good advice on a shrub that would work well in the space with other plants I had chosen. I'm just getting into gardening but I love this place. I noticed a beautiful tree on a friend's balcony and he told me it was a Mandevilla. I called over to Armstrong late in the day and Bob, one of the managers, picked up the phone and I asked him about Mandevillas and we had a nice chat and he told me that he would be there first thing in the morning the next day. I went over the next morning and Bob totally hooked me up with a beautiful Mandevilla in a nice pot and potted it as well. I also bought a Pothos that day and went back today for a Pittosporum. Bob, and all the employees, are very good at answering questions and asking if you need help and no question is too simple or basic. It's not snooty like other places and it's not a vacuum like a big box hardware store. The prices are great and the knowledge and service is fantastic and that is just what I'm looking for out of a gardening center. They also have a rewards program and give a senior discount.
