I'd used ARS in the past and was very satisfied with the technician's work and the price. I recently called to have a tub faucet drip and bathroom sink drip repaired. Was told that the type of tub faucet I had was no longer made, so the faucet valve and the waterline from the faucet to the shower head would have to be replaced. I have chrome fixtures, he replaced with brushed nickel. I wasn't asked what type/style or color of faucet/spout I would like. (Today I found what I wanted on Home Depot's website.) The tub and shower spouts are now cockeyed/off center. The tub faucet drip cost me $675.50, and the sink drip cost $175. Funny how the total came out to exactly $850.50. I took pictures and filed a complaint, and I expect them to make things right, including replacing the faucet and spout at no charge. I will never, ever use them again. read more

My disabled dad called to make an appointment because our sink was clogged up. Because we already use another service, I called back to cancel it. Come the next morning, ARS showed up anyway. Because it was a holiday, there was going to be an extra fee. This is also why I wanted to cancel the appointment. I called ARS to let them know about the situation. We settled on letting them look at our sink since they were already there plus they agreed to waive the holiday fee of $89. Because of my dads disability he isn't able to make decisions about these things. I had prior commitments so I had to leave my dad to deal with ARS. When I came back another ARS technician had arrived to assist. Apparently the initial tech needed different equipment. I was informed that they had already obtained the "signature" from my disabled dad for the go ahead on that. The second tech that arrived basically took over the appointment and purposely took advantage of my disabled dad. We didn't even get an itemized receipt so we don't know what we paid for. In the end, they said we needed a specialist because the initial 2 techs couldn't figure it out. I decided to cancel the whole thing because we needed to check with the service that we already use. But it's disgusting that ARS took advantage of a disabled person like they did. I will not be doing business with them again. read more

When he was finished he let me know that my system was in great shape. He didn't try to give me a hard sell about anything. I found Mike Fobbs to be professional and personable. Late, unprofessional and dishonest. I normally don't like posting financial details but am doing so below to save you the headache of dealing with this company. There are plenty of great tradesmen in Austin. Please look else-ware. DETAIL BELOW: I booked a water heater install bid through Home Depot 2 weeks in advance for a 10am to 2pm arrival time slot. Despite the wide window, service provider didn't arrive until 6pm. Shortly after arriving, gentlemen complained about responding to the late call and that he'd rather be at home with his family. My response, "yeah, me too". Labor bid on a tankless install was ~$3,200 plus ~$2,200 for an 11 GPM higher end model (so mid $5k all-in). This was a simple garage install job on an exterior wall. No attic work. No rerunning lines across a home. A master plumber or experienced journeymen should be able to handle the job in 8 to 10 hours, which gives me a ~$300 hourly labor rate quote. ARS should get an overhead charge, profit margin, plus $100 to $120 hourly. Bidding ~$300/hr on the job was just ARS trying to opportunistically fleece the large number of people who must click the home depot 'install' button. When i asked the master plumber about the job, he figured 10 hours. When i asked him about the $300 hourly, he first defended it saying "we don't think labor in terms of job hours" (wrong). He then said this is how they're bidding these days because this is what they can get away with. Well, at-least that's honest. read more

Called in the evening and scheduled an appointment for the next morning from 9-1 at 11:30 the day of the scheduled appointment they called and said they would have to cancel and that they would put me on the schedule for the next day, and if they were not able to make it, they would be out the following day. After purchasing an HVAC unit from ARS, we subscribed to semi-annual inspections. Price was reasonable and seemed a good idea until recently. Now, I'm finding they want to use the inspection as a sales call. Tech has about $850 of gadgets he wanted to install. Could be okay, but certainly not a good business practice. I'm researching the items to see if necessary, priced properly, and to understand what good, if any, these items do. ARS put an extra start up capacitor on the compressor 3 months ago. It "blew up" 2 days ago leading to complete replacement of the compressor. They took responsibility and did not charge for the replacement. It did have a 10 year warranty too. I'm a bit conflicted.... They overcharge for these "upgrades" and they may not be a good idea. Home Depot salesman got me on a $29 Heating system tune up from ARS... The guy was here for 2 minutes and already started telling me I need to replace parts. 10,000% mark up on a capacitor ($2.81 for the capacitor online, He wanted to charge $250, I see other reviews where people paid $200) then he refused to honor a $10 coupon. All I asked for was a $29 tune up but ALL he did was try to upsell me at every single moment. I don't think he did anything useful other than look for parts he could sell me. He insisted I need my entire HVAC changed. Said my HVAC "will go out at any moment" and insisted I get a "free quote" for a new HVAC. Just $100/month he said. What he didn't say is you end up paying 50% more than the original cost when using ARS credit. $8000 HVAC - 120 payments of $100 =$12,000 total cost. No thanks. Water heater went out and needed a new one. Went through Home Depot who contracts with ARS in our area. Only having one day off to handle felt we had no choice but to go through ARS/Home Depot by the time they came out to review the issue and price the job. Beware, with code updates and other requirements the job cost 3X the price of the water heater. Feels like Home Depot is more a portal for ARS service sales. Total to replace a water heater was $2,000 using the cheapest water heater with the shortest warranty. Just wish we'd had more time to get other estimates. Plumber showed up 5 and 1/2 hours late from my time window, dispatch says they over booked. Was told $89.99 by dispatcher, when plumber got here price went up to $350. I told him no, and price went down to $129, I told him no and price went to $89. Kitchen sink was clogged. I was able to snake about 10' before I hit clog. I'm a house flipper and currently in school to get my state license as a home inspector, so I might know a thing or two. Plumber snaked 80' and cleared clog. Don't fall for there bait and switch after they're 5 hours late. Next time I will call an independent plumber and not fall for radio and TV ads. Please do the same. I tried to have faith in the big guys but they are nothing but rip off artists. CEO of ARS quit the B.S. and go back to you're roots as a respectable company. read more

Similar experience to others here. If you buy a water heater from Home Depot, they know they've got you cornered and you're powerless. Our water heater went out on a Friday. I saw Austin Energy was offering rebates on heat pump water heaters to offset the cost so it was the same as a normal water heater. What they don't tell you is the amount of work required to install it. But that was the least of my problems. After requesting installation from someone at Home Depot, they told me I would be contacted within 48 hours. I called their install line 24 hours later to check, which connects directly to ARS and they had no record of my service order. Granted, this is probably not the fault of ARS, but not a great start. I told the person who made my appointment that it was a heat pump water heater and required special installation, and that it needed to be lifted to a ledge 18" off the ground in my garage. She told me a technician would be out between 8:30 and 12 the next day, Monday. I took Monday off work and waited around until 11 before I heard from ARS. Finally the technician showed up at 12:15. He had never seen heat pump water heater before and had a bad back and couldn't lift anything. After sitting in his truck on the phone for 15 minutes, he told me he couldn't get a hold of anyone at the office, and he was going to drive over there and call me an hour later with an estimate. Over an hour later, I had not heard anything so I called them back. The dispatcher told me they had switched technicians on me and they would let me know when they were on their way. Another two hours passed and I called them again, around 4 PM. The dispatcher sounded annoyed that I was calling again and told me they would call when the technicians were in their way. The technicians showed up unannounced at 5:30, but at least they got there I guess. They actually seemed to know what they were doing, but told me that they would not warranty the work because it requires HVAC and plumbing certifications to work on a heat pump water heater. And then quoted me over $3000 for the install. At this point it had been 4 full days without hot water, so I didn't really have a choice to wait for another company to give me an estimate or try and negotiate the price. They did quote me for a regular electric water heater, but I would have had to return the heat pump to Home Depot and buy a new one myself. Of course, but this time al the plumbing supply stores were closed so they would have to come back the next day to do the work. A whole day off work wasted just waiting for ARS to give me an estimate. The next morning, I called and spoke with a customer support manager who had been made aware of the situation by one of the technicians. I explained to her everything that had happened and she apologized and said it was unacceptable. She said she would figure out some compensation and get back to me. On Tuesday, the technicians showed up and installed the water heater with no problems. But I'm still unsure what exactly cost $3000. There is no itemized receipt that breaks down the costs. By Friday, I still had not heard back from the customer support manager so I called her back. I asked her about compensation and if they would warranty their work. She offered me $100 off, a measly 3% of what I paid them. And she said since I purchased the water heater myself they would not warranty past 90 days. Anything else would be through Home Depot. So much for standing behind your work. By this time she seemed annoyed by having to talk to me and when I mentored that $100 was not much for me losing a while day of work and having to constantly call them for updates. She said any further compensation would have to come from Home Depot, or effectively she told me to get lost. Sure, they can install a water heater, but for the price and the time and effort required, plus the terrible customer service, I would choose anyone else to do the work. read more

I was happy that this company was able to come out on such short notice but I'm greatly upset about the service that was recommended. I discovered a leak in my sons bathroom over the weekend. There was water flowing underneath a cabinet that housed my sons sinks. I was told directly from the company when scheduling that there would not be a fee for the plumber to come out and assess the problem. I was specifically told when the technician finds the problem he will give you a bid to repair and then go from there. The technician (master plumber) immediately said there would be a $200 fee to diagnose the problem. As expected he then cut two holes in the dry wall to get access to the pipes under the sink. He didn't put his hands on the wall to inspect the pipes but simply said the problem was a broken pipe in the foundation. He proceeded to tell me the cost would be just under $4000 to repair. I got a second opinion from a smaller company that was recommended by my homeowners policy. It took the plumber less than 5 minutes to detect that the problem was in fact a leaky pipe going into the sink (please see attached video). Honestly I don't know if the plumber with ARS was trying to make an extra buck or if it was a true misdiagnosis. I have contacted ARS asking for a refund and have sent the video to a supervisor. tl;dr version: gave in and scheduled an AC checkup appt but that appt never happened. Instead I'm being bothered by hard sells for new AC units and over $6K in energy efficiency improvements. Was at Home Depot and approached by an ARS person who was trying to get people to sign up for an AC checkup. I explained that I had a local person I've used in the past who I will use again because it was a lower cost than their promotions. After some back and forth in which the guy agreed to meet the local guy's prices and assured me that I'd get a coupon for 20% off an AC unit if I needed to replace within a year, I agreed to the appt. A few days before the appt was supposed to happen, I realized that I had a conflict and had to reschedule so I used the link in the confirmation email to reschedule. Got confirmation of the rescheduled time. But the day of the original appt comes and my other plans are interrupted by an ARS guy at the door. I explain the situation, he agrees to come the next day instead. Next day, I race home to meet the guy and he never shows. I got a coupon in the mail for a free service call (with the purchase of some repairs?) as a thank you for being their customer. So I assume they think they did the service? Whatever, I'll just call my local guy (which I forgot to do). Fast forward a couple months and I get a call from someone from ARS mumbling a bit about scheduling an appt. I ask if this is rescheduling the appt from April? Yes. So I agree to it. Appt time comes and the lady with an ARS/EAS shirt goes in my attic then comes to sit and explain the results. Then proceeds to do a hard sell for $6K worth of insulation, solar fans, vent replacements, and radiant barriers. What? Well how is my AC doing. That's when I find out - this was not the service call I was expecting and she isn't even an HVAC technician. This was the complimentary energy efficiency evaluation to go along with the service call I never got. After a lot of attempts to sell me on the work, I convince the lady to leave since I'm not going to spend $6K on an unsolicited evaluation of an AC unit that I don't even know the status of. A week later? Phone call from ARS bc they were told that I needed a new AC unit and they wanted to evaluate the type of unit I needed. No, I don't. Spent several minutes trying to explain to the lady that I didn't request one, I am not going to agree to this and (direct quote here) please do not call me, I'll call you. Today I got a phone call from someone who wanted to talk about the promotional deals and financing available for the insulation and other energy efficiency items from the energy evaluation I "had requested". Once again, had to explain I never requested the audit, I do not want the work done, please remove my number from all of your systems because at this point you are as bad as or worse than the scammers who call to offer extended warranties on my vehicle or a $20K loan for my (non existent) home business. read more

I can't imagine how ARS is still in business. I requested an estimate to install a hot water heater that I had already purchased. After spending way too much time reviewing this simple job (presumably to justify what was to come) I was told the estimate would START at $1900. I responded that this was far too high even if the water heater itself was included, but I had already bought it and had it available. I ended up calling a local handyman who installed it in two hours. How ARS can justify charging $1000 an hour for a a simple job is mind-numbing. It makes me sick to think of the trusting people this company takes advantage of. read more

Price gouging during a weather emergency is horribly unethical. I was charged $580 for one busted PVC pipe that took 1.5 hours to repair! The only reason I agreed was 1. I thought there would be more to the repair then that. 2. We had been without running water because of the winter storm for over three weeks and had been exhausted from it. The next plumbing company was still weeks away from an appointment here and we obviously could not wait that long. After asking him if he would wait while I confirm with my insurance they would cover this, he said no and that he would come back another time which might be weeks away. I would have never gone through with this if it was not for the scenario of being without water for 3 weeks and now looking at more weeks of waiting if we had not done it. I will be filing a consumer complaint with the attorney general of Texas along with the BBB. I suggest anyone to stay away from this company. read more

I called ARS after seeing a commercial on TV, they said that it would be $89 to remove the clog and if they couldn't fix it there would be no charge. I called ARS and spoke with a young lady about my problem. I told her my kitchen sink and my washer weren't draining properly. She got my address and told me about the special they were offering for the $89 I told her to send someone out. Well when Pedro arrived at my home, I took him to the sink and told him this is where the problem is. He said the the $89 special is only for the main line and to go into the sink line would be $401. Bait and switch if I've ever seen it! I escorted Pedro to the door and told him goodbye. If you try and use this company, they will do the same to you. I got another company to come out "Johnny Rooter" and they fixed the problem for $148 and it drains faster and better than it ever has and that fixed the drainage problem from the washer as well. This is the most unprofessional company I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. I had to wait about a month for an installation date that would work with my schedule. They cancelled my first *PREPAID* appointment after initially calling and saying they would be late. I had to wait almost a month for another installation date that would work. The technician, Steve, showed up 7 hours late, unprepared, and unaware of what he was actually supposed to be doing. Then, he told me I was lucky he was there and that I hadn't paid for the full installation of both a faucet and filter. I told him to get out and called both ARS to let them know that their technician was out of line and unprepared on top of being 7 hours late and Home Depot to get a refund and verify I what I had paid for. Steve called me back, not to apologize but to let me know I was correct and had paid for the full installation of both items and if I would let him back in my home he would do the job he'd already been paid for and given ample opportunity to accomplish. I will never do business with this company again since in my experience they're just in the business of scheduling and missing appointments and trying to scam you out of money by inflating their charges at the time of service. Glad I decided to try them out with a small job so I know not to hire them for my upcoming bathroom and kitchen remodels. Edit: Steve, who told me on the phone he was a very professional person, called me a "F*cking b*tch," after I closed the front door when I escorted him out of my home. Real professional. The schedulers are really the ones who have dissuaded me from using ARS again. I scheduled my appointment to happen last Friday morning. A scheduler confirmed my four hour appointment window, and told me the plumber will call 30 minutes ahead of his or her arrival. On Friday a man from ARS called and said, "I'll be there in about 45 minutes," so I get myself ready to greet a plumber. Within minutes a different scheduler calls and says, "Oh no! The person who called you was scheduled for a hot water inspection. They can't assess your leaks. Are you available Saturday?" NO. NO I AM NOT AVAILABLE SATURDAY. I ask for a discount on my services because now I'll have to re-juggle my Monday calendar to accomodate a person being in my home, IN ADDITION to my Friday calendar, which I've already done. I ask for a discount for the inconvenience. The scheduler says she has no way to make that happen. She's definitely not in charge of discounts and payment. I ask her, "can you leave a note somewhere mentioning it so someone who *is* capable can manage it later?" She says yes, actually, that is possible. Wow! Monday comes around and a schedule calls me and alludes to needing to reschedule again. She asks me about my condo and the size of my home, and says "Yeah, actually, I think someone *can* come out today." As if there were a possibility of a second round of mismanagement and another reschedule on the horizon! A gentleman arrives, poor fellow, at the incorrect address. A scheduler must have given him the wrong unit number. He calls me because he thinks he's at my door, but he is not. Then I wait for him to arrive at my home a few minutes later. I show him the damage under my cabinets and the faucets that are leaking. I show him a tumbler cup I've kept under one of the faucets to collect water leaking from the last three days, and show him that it's more than half full. He checks all the leaks and says "I fiddled with them and don't see any leaking." Apparently my leak is only visible to me. He writes me up some quotes and leaves. No mention of the discount that the second scheduler allegedly noted. I'm charged $59 for a 15 minute visit where nothing was diagnosed or fixed. read more

They charged $800 fixing the AC and assuring the AC would work now and they would come back to fix it with no extra charge for any issues, but it stopped working just after 30 days. When i called number of times for the issue, a technician came disinterested, already prepared to do nothing at all. He said everything is fine after measuring the gas, I suspected and asked him to measure in front of me and the measurement was much below what he said. U ARE THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH...at 65 I've dealt with a lot of companies... We called to have one of your fellows come out and check on her AC unit because it had been leaking from the attic to our deck off of her bedroom down to the first floor patio He came out last Thursday and said everything was fine. I came home on Tuesday late afternoon and three vents in our home had water pouring out of them. I called another company to come out and they came out and within two minutes could see that the valve outside by the air conditioner was clogged up. So he sucked all of that out. He also went up to the attic and saw that there was a lot of water in the overflow pan. Your guy had also gone up there and said everything was fine. I called the Austin office yesterday afternoon told them what was going on. The first woman I spoke with said he was coming out for maintenance check and we don't do repairs on the maintenance checks.... are you kidding me? What exactly does someone do on a maintenance check? My husband told him exactly what the problem was and showed him where the water was leaking from. So the initial person I spoke with transferred me to customer care or whatever. That person told me I had to speak with the finance department. So he connected me with the finance department. The finance department Recording said I had to put in one of two numbers. I don't know what they were. So I kept pressing zero, hoping I would get to a live person, but that did not happen. So I called them back. She connected me to your customer satisfaction person or whatever you call her. Unfortunately she wasn't there. So they told me to call her today and gave me the direct number why they didn't tell her to call me , I don't know.. She called me back to an 1/2 hours after I called her. Unfortunately I had gone outside for a few minutes and missed the fall. So I called her back at 2:40. It is now 10 after seven and I have not heard back from her. So I called back and asked when she would be in tomorrow, and I was told that she won't be in until Monday. So on the bill I noticed that there's a number for corporate customer relations so I called that number...of course they said to leave a message and they would call me back on the next business day. The next business day is Monday. In the meantime I have damage in my home as well as some of my furniture. Incompetent company. I have tried to do business with them on three different occasions. The plumbers that they have sent out do not know what they are doing and then have to send another plumber. I had a new hot water heater replaced with them and when inspected, the city inspector told me I had a very serious FIRE issue with they way it was installed!! No apologies from the company or general concern. I had to have someone else come out and correct the installation. Scheduling is a nightmare! I went to HD and bought a garbage disposal (~$130) and asked HD to add installation for my purchase on 7/3. Half hour later, someone from ARS called and let me know someone would be in my home to evaluate and install it, $89 trip charge would be credited to installation cost if I choose to proceed with installation. Out of trust of HD and their recommendation, I accepted it, I thought I would accept it as long price is reasonable. Today (7/5), a guy from ARS showed up, he spent a minute looking at the dish disposal and started looking up his computer for a minute, and told me it would cost $550 to install the dish disposal, and I had to pay $89 for his trip if I decided not to use them. That was ridiculous, I felt being taken advantage of, so I paid him $89 and asked him to leave. Couple hours later, I found someone who can do the job for $100. ARS gave me a window from 9 am to 1 pm, they didn't show up, nor called to let me know they would be late. Whenever I called at 1:15 to see why no one had shown up or contacted me to let me know of the late arrival, the person on the phone but me on hold for 15 minutes then came back with "sorry, we'll be there shortly". whenever I asked what "shortly" meant, she said, "I don't, soon..." I ordered one on line and when it arrived I called for the install. I was told that since I did not buy it in the store I would have to deal directly with ARS who is their installer. I called ARS but because I live in a condo and not a house, they could not do "the Home Depot install" and quoted me $350 to replace the disposal. Ridiculous. read more

I requested service to have an intake fan replaced or repaired. I described this intake fan in great detail over the telephone to ARS RescueRooter. When the technician came to my home and looked at the intake fan, he said it was too small of a job for him to do. He also disclosed that the people at ARS taking the phone calls and scheduling are not smart enough to know when a job is too small. So, he left without doing work. After he left, I called ARS RescueRooter requesting a manager to call me back to discuss this . . . tick tock (the manager has not yet responded). * The moment has passed, ARS RescueRooter; please do not respond now. read more

My husband installed our Nest and it started blowing hot air. We called your company to help us figure out what was going on, and a technician was sent out the next day. The tech popped off the unit, did what my husband already did, went into the attic and then popped the unit back on. He then said he couldn't figure it out and another guy couldn't come out until the following day. He then recommended that we put the old unit back on since it had been working fine, so we did. The second technician said the system wasn't catching and that's why hot air was blowing out. He reinstalled the unit, doing the same thing my husband did, with the exception of plugging in one wire. He then told me that the first guy should have caught that and he wouldn't have had to come out. He then told me, after I had already paid him, that it was an emergency wire that wasn't supposed to be plugged in. I was scammed. I'm fine paying the service fee, but an additional $150 to not plug in one wire is ridiculous!! We were taken advantage of in this situation. I will never use nor recommend your services again. I will inform all I know about your less than principled practices. read more

Sorry, cant rate zero :( Did not quote cost prior to work and advertised an "$89 Main Drain Line Cleaning. Includes FREE Video Camera Inspection" doesn't seem to figure in the equation! very disappointed that it took 4 days to "hear back from the corporate office" on why it costs $475.00 to snake 2 drains. I would not recommend their drain service under any circumstances. read more

Scheduled ac tune up it thru Home Depot 2 weeks before. Was given an option for am or pm scheduled it pm since I had errands to do in morning. Got called around 8:30 for early access wasn't home so i called them once i got done was told they would be there in hour which was @ 10:30am nobody showed up. Called in afternoon which was original schedule time was told tech not going to make it will need to reschedule.....wasted day read more

We had a PRV break and AC unit (means we have no running water or ac. All purchased through ARS) go down, my family of four (including a son with CANCER who is very susceptible to issues pertaining to heat) we scheduled an appointment for 9 am to get both fixed, come 10 am I received a text message saying that we would have to reschedule due to "unconditionally high heat" whatever that means. Sigh. Go and call them, to figure out when the next availability is, and BOOM! "Sorry not for another two weeks at LEAST" this is borderline inhumane and unbearable. I'd recommend for the austin area just calling radiant instead. They gave me a quote that was literally have the price for the dispatch and put me on for somebody to come out the same day. Very disappointed. I will never use this service again. read more
