Five months since my last haircut and color, but man, was it worth the wait. Jeffrey Jagling (A+A's owner) is not only a lovely, fun, sweetheart of a guy...he's a WIZARD. He never misses! If you told me a benevolent witch blessed his scissors and dye mixing bowl, I wouldn't argue. A dear friend recommended him after my previous stylist left NYC during the pandemic, and I'm finally happy with my hair ever since. No filters on any of these pics, just different lighting in the salon, in the street outside the salon, and the next day at dinner with my husband. After decades of mediocre haircuts (with the occasional decent one that the same stylist could not replicate the next time), I now love my hair every single time Jeffrey does it. No small trick for coarse, thick, wavy hair that has some natural curl but tons of frizz, and behaves like a science experiment on any given day. With most of my haircuts before him, it was fine in the salon and then impossible for me to style on my own, especially since I only air dry and tend not to use hair dryers except in winter if I absolutely have to -- and I don't even own a curling iron) -- but Jeffrey understands how to cut it in a way that allows me to encourage my natural waves and some curls without needing hot tools to make the cut work. And a great bonus: his cuts grow out nicely and the color fades nicely, too, so I don't have to redo it as often as with other stylists. And, look, I know I should get my roots covered and layered cleaned up way more frequently. But NYC is expensive, Soho is even more so...whuch means working with Jeffrey is a bigger investment than I would normally splurge on -- so, instead of going every 6 to 8 weeks and risking mediocre /meh haircuts from anyone else, I'd rather go to Jeffrey every five months and deal with annoying root touch up powders and sprays in the interim. He's just that good! PS: He has always been so kind about wearing a mask when he cuts my hair, never makes me feel weird about wearing mine, and would even seat me by an open window (even in winter) at their previous salon before A+A moved to a ground floor location. I have been seeing Ali for cut and color now for 3+ years. She is absolutely fantastic to the point that I won't see anyone else for my hair (hopefully ever again). I've got lighter, darker, more red, much shorter - every time she crushes it and gets exactly what I'm looking for. I moved away from the city and now commute back to NY to have her do my hair. 10/10 would recommend! I came here a few weeks ago for a haircut, and it was so great! [Full disclosure - I had my hair cut by someone who is in training (Jenna), so I can't comment on the stylists on the floor, but this review is based on my experience] Jenna and I had a consult and she talked with me through my history and what I was wanting out of the appointment! She washed my hair (the products smelled amaze!) and I got a nice little scalp massage, and we went back to the chair where she cut then dried my hair and gave me a little blowout. It was a fairly basic cut, but even so, everything was checked by her teacher, who I believe (based on looking at their website/Instagram) was Ali, who is one of the stylists there. Ali was so thorough when checking my hair at the end of the appointment, and gave very detailed feedback to Jenna (who did great, btw!) and I actually thought it was really cool to listen in - I think sometimes we forget how much technique goes into getting a haircut so that just reminded me that this really is a learned skill, and a form of art, really. I truly had such a good experience, from check-in to check out - the receptionist was very friendly, the salon is BEAUTIFUL and spacious. Everything was very clean, people were wearing masks and honestly, everyone was so kind. I will definitely be back for Jenna while she's training, but also, I would come back to the salon in general! A few things that stood out to me about Art + Autonomy: 1. The training - I don't know if this is the norm in NYC, but I think it's incredible how much training and education you have to go through to be a stylist on the floor at Art + Autonomy. My appointment with someone that was training gave me so much insight into that, and it truly made me appreciate this salon and experience even more! (and also, this is a stylist that already has a couple of years of experience) Stylists go through so much training and education and get "checked off" (if you will) for each service, and once they perfect one area, they can move on / build on to that, learning more and more advanced skills - it takes years (from what it seems) to be on the floor. Knowing the amount of time, effort, energy, and precision that goes into being a stylist here is seriously a HUGE reason I would, and will, return. 2. I really love that they are offering gender-neutral, inclusive pricing based on time, not "men's haircut/women's haircut/woman's color". I think this is SO important, so I very much appreciate the fact that they are creating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can feel comfortable. 3. This is a little silly, but people don't talk about it and I actually think this is important - the chair that you sit in to get your hair washed is actually comfortable?! Yes, yes, I realize this is small in comparison to everything else I just mentioned, but again, if you're paying for quality, why would you want to be uncomfortable the whole time you're getting your hair washed when you're supposed to be relaxing! So much more comfy than a normal salon, and those small things really do add to the experience. Here's the thing - it's NYC, anything hair-related is going to be expensive no matter where you go (especially in Soho). So you're gonna be spending the money regardless, why not go to a beautiful salon where you know the service is going to be quality. I held off for a long time due to cost, but I'm more and more realizing that quality is truly key (maybe that's what happens when you turn 30, you become wiser about quality of service vs saving money?) First visit here and would like to say never again? I did some research to make sure the salon knew how to cut male hair. So I made an appointment for a cut and perm (male) and was assigned Tom this past Sunday morning at 10am. Everything seemed ok until he started to cut the sides. He was clearly not familiar with cutting men's hair and did say he hasn't used clippers in forever (this is where I started to get nervous). I'm no barber but have had my fair share of haircuts to know he was having obvious trouble. I left the appointment around 1:30pm? (I have maybe 5-6 inches of hair) I thought it was bad but didn't realize how bad until my girlfriend said "he let you walk out like that??" (see photo). I've been to Art + Autonomy twice: once before the pandemic and then again this weekend. My experience was great both times. I got highlights the first time, and highlights and a haircut the second time. The staff here is awesome; everyone I've interacted with has been so friendly and welcoming. There weren't many people in the salon, so that was nice. I was paired with Haven and she is so friendly and warm and made me feel at ease. She asked a bunch of questions before we got started. I'll start by saying that as a neurodivergent person, salon experiences can be painfully awkward for me (the extended conversation with strangers, the concentrated attention on my face and hair for long periods of time, etc). I was looking for a big change (long brown hair to a pink pixie) and decided to book here based on all of the amazing reviews. Russell and Haven took care of me and I'll now be booking with these magical artists as long as they continue doing hair. On top of being profoundly talented, they both radiate warm, positive energy and made me feel so comfortable. I'm pretty sure Russell could find a way to have excellent, engaging conversation with anything (human or non human) and Haven had the most calming, gentle vibe about her that the time absolutely flew by (and I was there for a long time). I provided a few inspiration pictures, but ultimately left it up to them to reimagine my hair. I feel like they created a masterpiece on my head and I'm so in love! It was exactly what I wanted (even though I didn't have a completely clear vision of what I wanted)! I can't stop looking in the mirror at all of the gorgeous dimension in Haven's color and funky, flattering texture in Russell's cut - the pic here really doesn't do it justice! Ah, the joys of trying to keep your dark brown hair platinum blonde. Lots of processes and money. But, worth it. I used to frequent Art + Autonomy when I was very blonde for about 6 months in 2016. I had the pleasure of having Ali repeatedly dye my hair and honestly, I felt confident in her ability to not only bleach my hair, but to get it to the desired white blonde (and sometimes silver) I was so desperately wanting to achieve. If you're even remotely thinking of getting your hair done, A+A should absolutely be on your radar. Set up a free consultation with someone on their team to talk through the process and **make sure to bring a photo of what you want your hair to look like** -- it helps give them a better idea of what they should be working toward. From there, they'll block out time that fits both of you. For my short hair, it took anywhere from 2-4 hours, from the time I sat in the chair to leaving the door. Single/double processes take a while, so budget a couple hours. The salon itself is comfortable, clean, and chic (obviously, it's Soho,) and the employees are kind, including the owners. I spent hours in Ali's chair and we always had something to talk about (worth noting that it's not a gossip-y place,) and they always offer you a drink to pass the time more easily. They sell a bunch of high end salon products to keep your new hair looking as good as the day you leave the salon. I believe Ali used Redken to get my hair platinum blonde and a silvery-grey that I once got, but they use a bunch of different products. My scalp almost never burned and Ali was immensely thoughtful about making sure the process was safe on my body. There's a single, gender neutral restroom as well as some changing stations if you don't want to get your hair dyed in your work clothes. In terms of price, a double process can be on the higher end of the spectrum ($200+ and a tip), but I do believe this is one of the premiere places in all of New York City to get your hair colored.
