This is a very appealing beauty salon on 8th st in Greenwich Village. I went for the first time last week and got a wonderful cut by Eugene. He only does cuts as he feels that is his specialty. If one of his clients wants coloring and highlights he refers them to another person in the Salon. He feels people who work with hair are really specialists in either cuts or dye and highlights. Eugene is easy to talk with and he really listens to what you want. He is very careful with his cutting and my cut looks great! And it was from more reasonable then many other salons. And the salon looks just like the Website pictures. It is a short stair climb from street level to a beautiful salon and easy to get to from lots of subway stops as well as being in the heart of the Village. I got a haircut by Ellen and she did a great job. I'm always nervous going to a new stylist but she seemed to really understand how my hair falls and how that relates to my hairline. I wasn't sure what I wanted and she was very knowledgeable in asking me specific questions to determine what would work for me. This review is for Noriko at Salon V. I've been a loyal customer of the salon for some time, but this was my first haircut with Noriko--and it was nothing short of exceptional. I saw a cut she had done on another stylist, was instantly impressed, and booked her right away. She exceeded all my expectations. The layered cut she gave me is perfect--by far one of the best haircuts I've ever had (and I've had many). She managed to create movement and texture, smoothing out layers that previously required a lot of styling effort to look right. I have an incredible amount of hair, which makes cutting it more of an art than a science, but Noriko handled it with precision and skill. The result? Booked a haircut last minute for an event I had coming up. Looked on Yelp and Instagram and figured this was a good place! Came in and asked for hair about an inch/inch and a half below my shoulders and a couple of framing pieces at the front of my face. I showed these two reference photos. To say the least, they are not what I got. I thought it looked okay in the salon - and as I left and the hair started to move, I realized how wrong I was. I never asked for layers and I got them all over my head - horribly done layers. She also used thinning shears all over my head and feathered the ends - another thing I didn't ask for and isn't in either of the pictures. My hair is uneven, splotchy, and too heavy with the layers she put it around my head. I look like a mushroom or a tulip. And now I don't even have enough hair to go to someone else to fix it because she cut it too short. Everything about it is horrible. Super nice salon but the worst hair cut I've ever had. You should feel beautiful and renewed after a haircut and all I feel is ugly. I had to jump on here and write a review IMMEDIATELY, because I couldn't be more pleased with the results. I didn't like my blonde hair color, which was a result of a hair job done at &hair lounge a while back that was supposed to be an ombré from brown to a cool tone light brown (lesson learned: don't use purple brightening shampoo on brown hair). For the upcoming autumn, I wanted a darker brown with a mix between balayage and ombré. Wasn't too sure what I wanted, but I definitely didn't want basic. James heard my calling and gave me this beautiful brown balayage with ash brown tips, which he called milk tea hair. So many other stylists complimented the do, probably because this look suits my face better and is more natural looking. All in all, being under $300, including curling my hair, I think I've just found my go to place for my next coloring. Also everyone was so nice! I was offered tea and water, and my senior stylist answered all my questions in a helpful way. There was even a child here (which was not a common sight to me) and someone with a dog (albeit well-behaved), which speaks to me that this establishment is someplace people feel comfortable in. Bonus: my hair faded quickly to a gray-yellow (bleached hair does not hold color well and it was still that pesky purple shampoo), but since it was within 2 weeks, Salon V gave me a complimentary gloss and a treatment. Booked a double process here and was really excited based on the positive reviews. But the stylist processed my hair once, starting from the roots instead of the ends. The stylist was nice but rushing so much there was bleach splattered all over my cape. I also asked for a slightly shorter cut for my long hair and had several inches taken off so my hair is now above shoulder length. I ended up not minding the cut (even though it isn't what I asked for; it still looks okay) but my hair is bright white/yellow and extremely damaged- the photos don't do it justice, it looks like it was bleached at home with no toner at all. Whenever I've so much as had highlights anywhere else my hair is washed and deep conditioned at some point - not here. I've had double process before and have never been left with such dry and unhealthy hair, even upon leaving the salon day-of. I booked a color correction within 24 hours as soon as I saw the color and texture of my hair after a shower. Super disappointed with the $450+ I spent here. Was hoping for a positive experience but the stylist was rushing and the result was a far cry from what I came in for. I am hoping another salon can fix it. I am so ABSURDLY happy with my experience at Salon V today, I almost teared up. I am only in NYC for a few days this trip, and remembered literally yesterday that I desperately needed a cut and color before THIS weekend. I found this salon on yelp, and was pleased that they not only offered online appointments but could see me the next day- I.e., today. I showed up for my 4:15 appointment, only to learn that I had made a mistake and never completed the booking so they had no record of me. I was sooo bummed cause it was definitely my last chance to get my hair fixed, and it seemed completely hopeless. The kind, lovely receptionist asked what I wanted, scrolling through the schedule to see if there was ANY way she could fit me in. She called the owner, Vernelle, over to give me a consult to help determine what I wanted, and what, if anything, they could squeeze in for me. (Spoiler: everything!!) To fully illustrate what a miracle worker Vernelle is, you must understand that I had not had a trim or color in TWO YEARS. This poor woman was faced with a solid two inches of split ends, the bottom half of my hair having been highlighted and treated multiple times between 2-4 years ago, all of my hair having been subjected to drug store dye a couple months ago, except the top bits of recent growth. It was truly not cute. I showed her a couple pictures I had screenshotted of looks I like, and even though she explained that those processes wouldn't be good for my hair, she clearly saw my taste and likes because damn if it doesn't look better than ALL of the pics I showed her! This is truly the happiest I have EVER walked out of a salon. I'm literally going to schedule my next haircut to coincide with my next hair appointment. Truly, everyone, from the receptionist to the junior stylists to the owners were so kind, helpful, and positive. The space itself was beautiful. The robes were luxurious. Chairs were comfortable. No detail overlooked. Not only did Vernelle give me the best cut and color of my life, she did it by squeezing me around her previously scheduled appointments, ensuring that I was comfortable the whole time, without ever seeming to inconvenience any of her other clients. She and this salon wso lovely to work with. I've been coming to this salon since I moved to NYC over 2 years ago, back when they were still in the East Village. I can't believe I'm just getting to write them a review now! I actually found them on Yelp when I still lived in San Francisco, after doing a search for highlights. Things I love: They always offer you beverage - water, wine, coffee... And I've pretty much taken advantage of all of these at some point. Maybe it's standard across all salons, but I still appreciate it. The price point is awesome, for us urban dwellers. I initially saw Stephanie (who is now only in 2x a month - so don't ask for her!) and now see Ellen; both of which are senior stylists. Haircuts run $95, highlights $150-200. I've been to higher end salons, and I really think salon v does just as good as a job, as places charging almost double these rates. The prices are fair for Manhattan. It's also super quiet in the salon; I really appreciate that it's a cute airy space without a ton of hustle and bustle. I think they have 6 stylists... But typically only 3 working at a time, or less. I'm introverted, so super busy salons with 10+ stylists working at a time overwhelms me. They carry Kevin Murphy too, which I'm warming up to. Went for single color process and they didn't remove the dye completely from my ears and hairline last nearly a year ago. But I loved the color and the fact that they use cruelty free products so I decided to give them another chance. I even mentioned it when they were shampooing and removing the dye from my skin. But once again, I had a ring around my head and my ears were brown. Luckily, I still had the bottle I bought last year to remove the dye from my skin. Weird how they let their clients walk out like that-both with Senior colorists and hair stylist. Will have to think about going back August 2018 So, here's my update. Meg, one of the owners called me soon (within days) after my disappointed post to apologize and offered to have me come in for a free color when I was ready. Well, I finally took her up on her offer (my scheduling not hers). Meg was so nice and very conscientious of my concerns and made sure that I left the salon with a beautiful color and cut. She made an extra effort to remove as much stain but was afraid it might remove the color if they went too much into my hairline. I loved it! I'm not a person who frequently goes into hair salons (in fact I find them a tad intimidating). Usually, I get a cut at the cheapest place I can find or from a friend of a friend. But I had not had a haircut in months so I decided to try out a place while I was in NYC. I called in at around 11 AM and got scheduled for a 6 PM haircut the same evening. First, they greet you with a robe to wear and complimentary refreshments. I met with Amanda and she asked me a couple questions about how much I wanted to cut. She listened to what I wanted, then made some suggestions of her own. After that, I went to get my hair washed. I forget the name of the girl who washed my hair, but she was wonderful and explained everything she was doing each step of the way. I have a dry, easily irritated scalp and the shampoo/conditioner they chose made my scalp feel great! I ended up buying two sample sizes of the shampoo/conditioner they used (~$7 each). I went back to the seat and Amanda asked me a few more questions, then started cutting. I was really impressed by how thorough she was, focused and her attention to detail. You could tell she was very serious about making sure I had a great haircut that I was 100% happy with. She told me what she was going to do each step of the way and asked questions to make sure that was what I wanted. She would suggest things along the way, with the reasoning behind them (how it would grow out, what would happen if X). I'm really happy she didn't just blindly follow what I said (I'm definitely not an expert haha) and her suggestions turned out great! You can definitely tell that hair cutting to her is a craft and I had a wonderful experience here. I had a ton of hair cut off (a good 8+ inches) and it is easily the best haircut I've ever received. I thought the haircut was so worth it for its price, especially considering it's in Manhattan. I came in with long, dry and dead hair that really needed some attention. I've been a client of Salon V for many years (since their East Village days!) and I've been to several stylists for haircuts and for highlights. Today was my first time visiting since Corona changed everyday life, including salon visits, for all of us. I was booked to see Amanda today and I couldn't be more pleased with the thought the salon put into precautionary measures and with my haircut! First, the precautionary measures: There are plastic barriers up everywhere to separate the chairs (including the shampoo chairs) but each barrier looks like a little white picket fence, complete w/ fresh flowers. It's a thoughtful touch. (Note: You can kind've see it in my first picture.) I was given hand sanitizer and a temperature check as soon as I walked in and quickly escorted to my chair where I signed paperwork stating things like I hadn't been around anyone sick lately or been sick myself, etc. Everyone in the salon wore masks and, even when I needed to unloop my own mask from around my ears so Amanda could comb and cut my hair, I was instructed to hold it up to my face which was no problem. When it came time to pay, I paid by credit card as usual and the front desk had a list of all the stylists' Venmo accounts to make it easier to tip without the need for cash (although cash is still accepted). I was super impressed at the thought that went into making so many changes in the name of safety as seamless as it can possibly be - Not an easy feat. As for the cut, I love it. This was my first time seeing Amanda and upon learning I wanted to chop off a pretty significant length (8+ inches), she made sure to explain her technique and to ensure she knew exactly how short it would be so I wasn't unpleasantly surprised. My hair looks great and so much healthier. I'm also attempting to grow out my natural color vs. continuing to get highlights and Amanda shared some helpful tips for making that process a little easier. Just had a haircut by Darisa and I'm pretty sure this is the best haircut I've ever had! I went in for a trim and a little cleanup in the bangs. I also recommended maybe some long layers to take out the bulk because my hair is so thick. She understood exactly what I wanted and asked me many questions before she started. She did such a thorough job and I appreciate her attention to detail, as I too am a perfectionist. Then she gave me one of the most beautiful blowouts I've ever had! I now have so much movement in my hair. She made my hair healthy again by taking off the ends but kept the length, exactly what I asked for. I've had bad experiences in the past where stylists use their own judgment and takeoff what they think is the right amount always leaving me feeling like they took too much. But she did a absolute perfect job. Wish I would have taken a picture as soon as I left and unfortunately I rode my bike home but here's a pic when I got home. Since I also needed a haircut I book an appointment with Christina the same afternoon. I don't really like getting my hair cut, but Christina did an amazing job. She was gentle and made sure to understand exactly what I wanted. She did an amazing job cutting my hair and she was super diligent and made sure everything looked the way I wanted it to. Had an absolutely amazing haircut with James at Salon V yesterday. Coming out of Covid hair, he had previously shaped the bottom after I had trimmed it myself (Covid, remember?) and had styled my bangs with texture techniques to be really flattering. But yesterday we really jived! He first listened to what I wanted and didn't want - I have very thick hair, and want to remove volume, and allow waves, without layering. OMG. He said he would use a slicing scissors (think that's what he said) and no razor, no thinning shears. The haircut is gorgeous! Perfect proportions, no odd angles, and met my requests of how to handle certain areas. James is very talented and I am so happy! Plus, the shampoo room is gorgeous and very relaxing. My boyfriend has been seeing Vernelle for years for his haircuts and finally convinced me to go with him. I was initially hesitant because cutting men's and women's hair is different. So happy he convinced me. I LOVE what she did. I have straight, fine hair and a lot of it... it grows quickly and can get quite heavy. I haven't been to a stylist in years. My mom had been cutting it because I was basically traumatized by many prior haircut experiences. I can say I'm thrilled to have gone to see Vernelle. I love love love this salon. I have been every color: dark red, strawberry blonde, every brown and now platinum. This is the only salon (truly) I trust with my hair. I have been going to either Meg or Vernelle for years. I have never left this salon disappointed with my hair color as I have with other salons (you know when you go and bring a picture of what you want, and it backfires!). I have over the years referred many of my girlfriends who also are regulars here. Last thing I will say: if you tell them you want something that they think isn't ideal for your face shape or complexion... They will tell you. And I really appreciate that candor. I tried their new SCALP TREATMENT the other day and I have finally been united with a salon that can provide the same service as that which I have become accustomed to from the true Japanese technique. Without proper follicle and root cleansing, my scalp has always been flaky, dry and itchy - especially in the dry, winter months. I have tried different salons which offer this service but have never been satisfied. At Salon V, they have the follicle cleansing and rejuvenating warm mask massage of the scalp perfected. I love Meg. I love Meg. I LOVE MEG! This isn't an unhealthy obsession. This is an earned love established over many years of Meg coming through for me in so many ways. I previously reviewed Meg and Salon V at their last location. Since then Meg has only gotten better (which means her prices have gone up which pains me, but no one deserves success more- honestly and truly). I spent the past year pinching pennies and cutting corners. My hair suffered because of it. Haircuts was one of the first things I cut from the budget. Not only did my hair suffer, but my quality of life did as well. I missed the care that Meg gave to my hair and to me. I needed that outlet. I needed that hair and personal therapy. It's been about four years now (I think...maybe five? WOW! FIVE!) since I meandered into Salon V at its old location, desperate for a make over and someone to make sense of my million ideas. Meg did just that and I haven't looked back. I can't even count how many times I've walked in and said, "I think I want this. But sorta that. But kinda this. And a little of that. And not so much that but sorta this." Meg nods her head, asks a lot of questions and always delivers flirty, romantic yet edgy and sophisticated cuts that fit me perfectly. They also grow out really well, which is great for my budget because I can squeeze an extra few weeks in between cuts that way. I trust Meg like no one else and while I wouldn't go to anyone else, if push came to shove I would likely be wiling to try the other stylists at Salon V because education is so evident there I would absolutely be willing to give another stylist a try.
