It's no secret that I love bakeries, so when I was waiting for the #56 to come I popped in here for a quick treat. I had no clue what most of these pastries were, so I bought two or three things and went on my merry way. There was only one person working, and other people in the store, so I didn't want to bother her with questions. I've been here a few times since then, and I still have no idea what all the pastries are. I do know that most are delicious. There's a coconut cookie that's absolutely great, and a cinnamon cruller type thing that's awesome. An assortment of filled doughnuts are quite respectable. My only issue is that many of these pastries are so, so sweet--they're unbalanced. But almost everything is under $1 or $2, and it's so convenient to the Milwaukee bus, it's a place I can see myself returning. read more

I'm only giving three stars because sometimes there's only one person working when there should be two, things aren't labeled well enough for me to jsut know what something is without asking, and sometimes the cookies are a little stale. Definitely a first rate pop in joint but not worth a special trip. read more

The coconut macaroon is totally bananas. Delicious, dream about the coconut goodness weeks later good. And, unlike the chocolate dipped/fruited macaroon at Au Bon Pain, it is not so sweet as to make your teeth hurt. I can't really recommend much else. I stopped by Artemio's on a Thursday evening several weeks ago and purchased a selection of items to treat my coworkers with the following morning. Unfortunately, that plan went awry. Everything but the macaroon was stale and dried out the following morning. I'm guessing everyone who raved about Artemio's went into the bakery early in the morning and ate the sweets/pastries immediately, but I would caution you against coming in during the afternoon or evening. read more

Unwritten Rule Number 17 of City Living: Move into a neighborhood. Live there for a short period of time. Then complain about how the neighborhood is changing and all the yuppies are moving in (even as people were complaining about you when you moved in). Anyways onto the review... I will be continuing to check out everything this place has to offer because it is so cheap but so far the several times I've gone in there most of what I have tried (i.e. brownies, cookies, cupcakes) has been pretty dry and not too great. I do like the blueberry muffins though. Stuff ranges from 50 cents to 70 cents. Price = 5 stars Baked goods = 2 stars (as of now, may change as I continue to try more and more cheap stuff!) Back to the rule of city living, as Milwaukee Ave. continues to get gussied up this place will make way for another bank or wine bar and me and everyone else will complain about how the character of the neighborhood is gone and all the new people moving in suck. read more

If you're in the mood for delicious Mexican pastries, then Artemio's is your place! Artemio's is close to my house, but I haven't walked into the bakery till today, which is shame because I've been missing out! When you walk into Artemio's there are 3 sets of cabinets, one to your left, one in he middle and one tor your right. The cabinets have glass doors and house all the yummy pastries and baked goods. You have to walk up to the counter which is at the back wall and pick up a tray and tongs. And then you get to walk around and fill your tray up with pastries. None of the pastries are labeled, so you have to kinda guess what the fillings are or what it may taste like. They're all very reasonably priced as well. Wicker Park may be the heart of trendy dining digs and ultra cool fashion boutiques, but even here, you can flash back in time where cookies cost only $0.10 and pastries run $0.75 and under. This modest panaderia has much to offer (in calories and in value) and you'd be wise to take a slice of their fabulous tres leches cake and at least a dozen of their jelly cookies home. They have a huge assortment of donuts, cakes, and rolls, but when I like something, I make it a habit to get it all the time. read more

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE WORKER 1. The bread is always fresh and delicious ! I did find a hair in my bread the other day but I know things happen and it's okay. 2. My visit was on Friday, December the 3rd around 6:15-6:30am. There are only 2 women workers I've came across and one has glasses and one does not. I am talking about the one WITHOUT GLASSES. I walked in and I was not greeted. I asked for a specific bread that was not visible since I am short and she said "I don't know", with attitude. She easily could have shown me where it was or even pointed in the direction. I finally spotted the bread and tried to get a few but they were so fresh and hot that they started to break and I asked her if she had something to separate the bread without breaking them in half and she said "Ay, señora". While cashing out she was huffing and puffing and talking to me with attitude. I asked her to sell me a cake box to put the bread in since the bread was so fresh, I knew putting them in a bag would make them break and she rolled her eyes. I'm not asking for free stuff! She should WANT to sell. I hope I don't come across her again. read more

Love this little hidden gem. We used to trek all way to 47th for some good conchas and tres leches, but been getting our pan dulce from Artemis for years now! I love their French bread, telleras, cookies and conchas they stay soft and taste fresh for days. Most conchas dry out by the next day but not Artemios. I wish every bakery were like Artemio. When you walk in, there are cases with glass doors showcasing breads, desserts, cookies, and other high-carb deliciousness. You grab some tongs and load up a cafeteria tray. There are no posted prices or signs for what the pastries are, but I learned on Yelp it was crazy cheap and everything looked good so I just grabbed stuff. I got 6 doughnuts, cake rolls, and other cream-filled yumminess for under $5. Later I went to Alliance Bakery and their pastries are like $5 EACH. It's more of a takeout bakery, though. There is no seating and although they have canned drinks I didn't see like cappuccinos or anything you would want to partner with desserts. Also they didn't have cupcakes or chocolate snacks which is why I ended up later with $10 of coffee & (more) pastries at the Alliance coffeehouse. read more

I wanted to go to a nice local bakery to pick up some desert for after my lunch. i hate going to places that i could go when i'm home, when i'm on vacation i want a taste of what's going on locally! but i'd rather not have come here. ok my order was only $1.50 for a cookie and a large piece of cake. so i can't say i wasted too much money. but my cake was so stale tasting that i threw it away as soon as i took a bite of it. and it was kind of depressing inside. it didn't seem cheery at all. and my friend tried to use her card, their machine was broken. i had to pay for her. isn't that the kind of thing you should stay on top of or atleast put a sign up? read more

I was grateful for my four years of high school Spanish when it came to deciphering the different treats in the cabinets, but the staff is helpful if you're going there for the first time. A huge selection of goodies which are all super cheap & humongous! It was so hard to pick just one afternoon dessert, but I went with the Boston cream donut which was the size of my face! It was delicious!! I liked that the chocolate on top was a quality milk chocolate coating that didn't taste fake sweet and it was a more melt-in-your-mouth consistency rather than a chocolate shell coating. read more

The cheapest (price-wise) bakery in Chicago probably. Everything here is huge, and most of it is less than $1 each. Unfortunately, not everything the sell is good (taste-wise). Their conchas are very dry and not at all like what a concha should be. Their jelly rolls are mostly dry cake with very little jelly. I feel like their other cake products would be the same, but who knows. Everything else, though, is great, especially those fruit tart cups that are a foot deep (around 2-3 cm in metric/real life units) and filled with the tastiest jelly ever (the kind they should be filling their jelly rolls more with!). Their black/white cookies (not really a black/white cookie, but close enough) are tasty, with a hint of chocolate. Their weird peanut butter cookies (?) are crumbly and dry, but they still have a strong PB taste, so I like crumbling them into ice cream. Their watermelon cookies (which were a huge disappointment when I found out they didn't taste like watermelon) were surprisingly good (after that inital disappointment) (although I'm still more disappointed than pleased by them). I went here on a whim and was very impressed! The best part was that I got 6 or so pastries and paid $2.60!! I went in the evening so the place was dead but everything was still very fresh. Woah -- the prices are amazing here. A quarter for a medium sized heart shaped cookie, made from scratch? Perfect to satisfy my sweet tooth without being too overly sweet. I really like walking slowly past the windows of the baked goods here, noticing their attention to quality. Beware, the prices are so good, you'll have to hit the gym up one (or two) extra times this week! This bakery is close to Wicker Park, so grab a treat with a friend, along with a hot coffee, and people watch in the park whilst dunking said pastry/confection into hot coffee! Perfection. read more

Oh god, do I love this place! I stopped in with my parents once to get a cookie and have been coming back ever since. Call me plain, but my favorite things here are the big cookies that look like a checkerboard. And the apple turnovers are pretty delicious as well. The drawback is that no prices are marked but don't even worry about it. Your total order will be less than you expect it to be. This is a great mexican bakery, both it and its counterpart on sheridan. The coconut macaroons are some of the best I've had, crunchy on the outside but chewy, moist, and delicious on the inside. The little custard filled enchiladas are also really good. All the cookies are good, I especially like the shortbread. Some of the pastries seem a bit dry, but then I tend to have a taste for much stronger tasting, very sweet things. And speaking of sweet things, they also have a tres leches cake here! As apparently does every bakery in this neighborhood. This one is pretty good, decently moist and tasty, but not super tasty. I'd give it a 7/10. Oh and the prices here are great. I was there twice when I was in Chicago in July. I went there because of good reviews on Yelp and Google. I was not disappointed although some of the pastries were blah. I had a chocolate brownie the first time I was there, it looked fresh but tasted really dry and I ended up throwing it away. I also tried a chocolate and vanilla Concha, both were fresh and sweet but there were not much flavor to them. I tried a coconut macaroon because it was on a baking plate and I thought it was freshly baked but it turned out rock hard, so I think it was from an old batch and was baked twice for resale but it tasted good. I was at the bakery again 5 days later and there were lots of customers there. I had a more positive experience this time. Everything I picked taste fresh including coconut macaroons ( very soft and moist). I recommend coconut macaroons, orange muffins and round pastries with sugar on top and strawberry fillings in between, and pastries that look like a cup with strawberry fillings on top. Overall, go early in the morning but not too early, I suggest close to 8. If you spend time and choose pastries carefully, you won't be disappointed. read more

The aroma lured us in. This Mexican Bakery is so incredibly good! It's disheartening to see a small selection of pan dulce and empty display cases but perhaps it's better to be wise with inventory and sales. Every piece of bread and pastry we bought tasted one-hundo!! Prices are higher than most but well deserving! Soooo cute I adore this bakery and lust after its breads. These small bakeries are what makes a neighborhood unique. It's a shame that I cannot remember the names of anything, but I can guarantee that anything you pick up will be fresh and delicious. It'll seriously make your mouth water if you don't finish all of it in one sitting. Help yourself with a pair of tongs and a tray. Self service and complimentary coffee makes me verrry happy. Oh, and have you checked out their prices?? Not just reasonable, you'll feel guilty giving so little. On your next trip down Milwaukee, be sure to stop here. You'll leave very happy! read more

I haven't been here in years, since the days when I used to travel to Chicago on business trips in the early-to-mid 2000's, but I am glad to see that people are still giving Artemio's great reviews. I tell everyone I know who is traveling to Chicago to check out this amazing self-serve bakery. I remember being overwhelmed by so many display cases filled with delicious-looking pastries and walking out of there with a bag-full of all kinds of amazing treats for no more than a couple of bucks. Of course, I couldn't take them all back with me on the plane, so I would end up eating pastries for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all while I walked in and out of clients' businesses. If I wasn't feeling piggish that day, I might even share some, but never did any of them make it home to NY. I'd imagine we might have a similar type of bakery here on Long Island, in New York, but I haven't found it yet. I kind of wish I were still in the industry that brought me to Chicago at least once a month, just so I could visit Artemio's one more time! read more

Very affordable pastries with a homemade feel. The store is not very large itself but the walls are lined with all sorts of treats and there's a cabinet in the middle as well. Felt like the inside of someone's kitchen. The ones I picked out were OK but just felt like something you could make yourself at home. Ok... So don't walk into Artemio's expecting a french pastry shop... Yet do expect to experience a great gem that has a lot of great pastry to offer plus is SUPER friendly on the wallet. By far and away the jewel of this spot is the coconut macaroons. These are simply magical for all the right reasons. You'll be missing out if you don't try one and they go for something like .70 each for a tennis ball sized treat... Our last trip an order was waiting for pickup for over 300... Somebody agrees with this thinking. Muffins and pastries are also good, filled with tropical fruits as well as the traditional cream/fruit fillings. Muffins/cookies are sometimes dry like others have mentioned but this seems to be the way they do it. Another cool thing is your totally on your own to pick your own pastries from the cases around the store. Just grab a tray and some tongs and go for it. Staff is usually helpful if you have questions when they are not busy... Expect to walk out with a carb-loaded adventure for just a few dollars. read more

This is my favorite bakery and has been for a few years now. It is my go to spot when I'm craving some delicious pan dulce or when I need a cake for a special occasion. This past weekend I ordered a vanilla cake with peach filling and I love how spongy the cake is every time. This place is amazing. It's like the mexican pastries my dad would bring home from Detroit. The set up in case you're new to it the pastries are in cabinets and you have to grab a tray and tongs from the register area. Its wonderful I just wish they had empanatas especially the pumpkin filled kind. Oh and its inexpensive and the staff is very nice. I also saw a woman picking up a flan the size of a car tire. The prices, the delicious taste, the atmosphere! I bought a coconut macaroon the size of my head and was only charged .50...WHAT?! .50 cents? Popped in here on the walk back home. I was with family and we had just had some late lunch at Piece. We were looking for some ice cream, hoping to give Icream a try but they weren't open. Luckily Artemio was open and was able to kill that sweet tooth. We each picked out a cookie and at .50 cents each, not a bad deal. The cookies were good but a little dry. It was late on Sunday so the cookies may of been made awhile ago. So I'm willing to give them another try another day. But good prices and friendly service was a plus. read more
