I got a plain cannoli with chocolate chips which was yummy and reasonably priced. My boyfriend got pizza slices and he liked them, they were good enough to eat cold! I didn't notice prices posted but the staff knew the costs. Plus they do take card but there is a $5 minimum so beware. Street parking and a nice walk if you're in East Cambridge for the day. They aren't open super late either so check the time online before going. Apparently this place gets busy around the holidays and I can see why. Royal Bakery is a charming little Italian bakery in Cambridge that won't break the bank. My friends surprised me with a birthday cake from Royal Bakery, and it was absolutely divine! The strawberry shortcake was to die for. It was so delicious that I could have easily eaten the whole thing myself, but my waistline and dentist would have a heart attack if I did. The icing was light and fluffy, and the cake itself was rich and moist, with strawberries and whipped cream perfectly layered between each slice. It was a truly one of the best cakes I've ever eaten. Royal Pastry in Cambridge has been a part of our family's celebrations for years. Every year, I get both of my children's birthday cakes from here--and now my oldest is turning 16. That alone says a lot! The cakes are always beautiful, fresh, and delicious, with that perfect homemade feel you just can't get anywhere else. Disclaimer: I did not visit Royal Pastry Shop in person, I just visited their stand at a fair. I tried their Sicilian style pepperoni pizza, which I found to be very average. It tasted a bit like frozen pizza, but that might be because I'm more used to traditional New York style pizza. Also, it wasn't served hot because there wasn't the opportunity to reheat it at the fair, so that might have made it a bit less enjoyable. I know I've passed this place a bunch of times and it looks like they have some delicious pastries. I'll have to try some of those, but I wouldn't bother with the pizza next time. read more

I would never order a birthday cake from this bakery. l ordered a full sheet birthday cake and they put 6 tiny flowers on top and the rest was swirls. The writing was crooked and overall looked like a 17 year old was practicing. Thr colors thru used were orange, cranberry and yellow. Did not even coordinate together. The best part is that you need to spend only $5 to pay with a credit card. The staff is very nice and we're patient with all my questions. We have been coming for YEARS and I can't imagine going anywhere else. Always call ahead to order and don't forget to add the almonds on the sides! I look forward to my birthday every year just because I'm always thinking of this cake. Rich yellow cake with delicious layers of custard/rum filling/strawberries/frosting. And if you're going to do it, go all out with traditional frosting! Many places may offer it but just say no one does it like Royal. Cookies: Much cheaper than Mikes, Modern, or Bova pastry shops in North End. The cookies are $10/lb. They have a variety of cookies to choose from (shape and color wise). I will give the cookies a 3/5 tastewise. They are kinda hard and not as buttery as the ones you get from North End. And I'm a little bit disappointed that they don't have pistachio or almond cookies. Rum cake: 4/5. Taste very good and you can tell the cakes are SOAKED in rum! Lobster tail: This is more like an americanized sfogliatelle. Unlike the ones in North End which are filled with ricotta cheese cream, the lobster tails here are filled with custard. Pizza: tasted amazing! they are square cut sicilian style pizza super fluffy dough and plenty of topping! key lime pie: 5/5. I loved the not too sweet whipped cream on the top! Old-fashioned Italian-American pastry shop, family-owned for 80 years. Extremely wide selection of pastries, but I admit I keep going back to the same Italian favorites. The signature ricotta pie is truly excellent. In particular it is not excessively sweet, so I can gladly devour shameful quantities without getting tired of it. The same goes for the cannoli, which moreover get filled as you order them so the shell stays crisp. Their ricotta filling is sweet, but not as aggressively sweet as at the famous North End purveyors. I like Royal's cannoli better and find them closer to those I've had in Italy. I'm also fond of the apple cake (while I haven't tried the apple pie). Last but not least, the value for money is praiseworthy. Inflation is hitting us everywhere --- pre-pandemic prices are now fond memories --- but in relative terms Royal's pies and coffee cakes remain at a price point that competes with grocery stores, not the hyper-expensive pretentious new bakeries in trendier parts of town. read more

My family has been coming here for years. Ernie and Sal made my mothers wedding cake back in the 80s as a wedding gift to her. My uncle John spends hundreds here every holiday on pies and cakes etc. ,I recently got a few danish on the way home from worked and as I looked at the lemon curd on the second danish i noticed a dark shadow in it. I dug it out with a knife, and to my disgust it was mouse poop. There was a second piece as well. Unfortunately this has ruined it for myself as well as my family. Wow. I am amazed at the great reviews. First, the cannoli are great. Serious, it's 4.5 star cannoli. But their macaroons were bland and uninteresting, the cheesecake was smooth but too sweet and missing my favorite part, crust. The biscotti and boring as all hell. And the girl behind the counter who helped us was disinterested, uninformed, and just the teeniest bit cranky. Okay, if you don't want to be there, go home. She didn't know much about the goods they were selling. I asked about macaroons and if there was pistachio and she just named the colors and made me look at them to pick. I would go here for cannoli again, if I was on Cambridge Street anyway, but if I'm driving miles for baked goods, I'm still going to the North End. The service is not worth the extra trip. Oh, one thing, 4 macaroons, 2 cannoli, and a piece of cake (had the biscotti on a separate occasion) cost under $8. For service and some of the baked goods I give one, maybe 2 stars, but then cannoli and price get 4... so I'm averaging out here. read more

They have a selection of Italian cookies available but we always go for the pastries lol. We've tried their apple strudel, cannoli, rum cake, custard square, chocolate/strawberry cream roll, and this flaky pastry with chocolate and vanilla custard cream #gobigorgohome Everything was good but I think the standouts are the apple strudel and the cream roll!! The strudel has more of a substantial crust (which is what I like) with icing, and spiced apple filling. The cream roll was cake with cream filling and it was thicker custardy cream with a preserved strawberry inside. If you don't want to make the trek over to Mike's or Modern Pastry in the North End, this is a really good alternative in Cambridge. I've been going here a bit during the COVID crisis currently, in an effort to support local biz in Cambridge, and they do a terrific job with their pastries. They use high-quality ingredients, and I've gone at 2:00PM in the afternoon on a weekend and the items that I purchased were fresh (which is not a guarantee for bakeries in the afternoon). Excellent assortment of Italian pastries; my go-to is the eclair that they have. I'm also a big fan of their cheesecake. Another thing to note is that the location is very accessible on Cambridge Street, fairly close to Inman Square and a pretty lively area. If you go out to dinner at one of the local restaurants, this is a great spot to stop by after to get a pastry for dessert. There isn't great (if any) seating inside, but they are quick on the takeout in the traditional string pastry boxes. They also take card on over $10 purchases which, if you've been to Mike's in the North End, know is not necessarily a given when it comes to spots like this. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're in Cambridge and have a sweet tooth, but don't want to trek over to the North End. They also have great bake-at-home pizza that you can purchase by the tray. Really ideal for big events or sports watch parties. read more

I like this Italian Bakery Style Pizza because it tastes great heated up but tastes really good at room temperature too. Classic Neapolitan Pizza which I love tastes great hot, not so much at room temperature. This bakery pizza is perfect for a BBQ - no work & eat hot or room temperature. I also got some Classic Italian Sesame Cookies. Now I decided to get a cake & opted for "THE CHOCOLATE JOE'S SPECIAL". It is a Devil's Food Cake with Whipped Cream & Strawberries. This place is an undiscovered gem. I mean, only 14 reviews for this location? It's located on Cambridge Street for Chrissakes! So close to so many great places! Maybe it's the simple fact that Royal Pastry doesn't try so hard in this day and age of pastry shops constantly striving to outdo one another in terms of style, in terms of (dare I say it?) being hip? I know it doesn't merely sell cupcakes so it is not something trendy like a "cupcakery" (who the F invented that word, by the way?), but it still kicks the ass of places like Sweet and then pisses in their faces. I love their vanilla on vanilla cupcakes. A pure sugar rush! And, oh yeah, they're only something like .80 cents. Yes, .80 effin cents. You could buy four of these for the prices you pay at others. But I digress. I love their black and white cookies, or half moons. I prefer the chocolate cake, but Royal Pastry offers vanilla cake on the cookies as well. I love the fact they offer the most moist and delicious of carrot cakes slices for only $1.50 (take that, Cheesecake Factory!). The perfect combination of nutmeg, cinnamon, and a stupendous cream cheese frosting makes me frost my pants thinking about it. Oh, and you can buy a small carrot cake or tiramisu or other cakes for generally around $13. I love the butter and ginger cookies covered in vanilla frosting and jimmies with a sugared candy face on it (hello, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!). Basically, I love it all, and I've only mentioned maybe 1/25 of what they offer behind their overflowing cases. The staff are super quick and efficient. Just know you need to spend at least $10 worth to use debit or credit; otherwise, come with cash. This is a real OG bakery. I haven't visited this place in person, however at work, one of the managers brings in a few items from here every Friday (bless his soul). I have tried the following items (don't know the actual names for all): Blueberry pound cake with something like a creme anglaise - very moist and has the right hints of some tanginess, with the perfect amount of sweetness "Flat Tire" - Layers of flaky dough that's covered in crystallized sugar; in parts of India, there is a dessert known as "khaja" which is very similar to this, and I'm a huge fan of it Chocolate Cake (loaf cake) - pretty good, not something that would really wow me away, but I would go back for more Macaroons - We've had these twice. The first time, it was very dense and tasted heavily of coconut oil. However, the second time around it was very good. Crumbly and tasted like actual coconut I plan on trying this place out soon in person, hopefully I get a chance. read more

Doesn't matter how many times you tell Uncle Jake that you hate XYZ cake- he forgets every year, and you just grin through it, not wanting to seem ungrateful. I feel like they're allergic to strawberries or something? Didn't they go vegan recently?" Who ever thought a classic confection like cake could cause so much anxiety and self-doubt? With my birthday rapidly approaching, I decided to spare my siblings the cake drama by just locating and ordering the cake I really wanted. And what I wanted was..... a chocolate raspberry cake. You know, a chocolate-frosted chocolate layer cake, with a raspberry jam-like filling in between the layers. And as usual, I waited until the very last possible moment to embark on my cake hunt, which was the day before my party. Yes, you read that correctly. One day. Some part of me just knew I was going to end up with a buttercream yellowcake as my punishment for procrastinating. But Yelp led me to Royal Pastry, and I practically fell over when the girl on the phone casually remarked, "Chocolate raspberry? Sure, we can do that." me: "seriously?" her: "yep, what kind of frosting?" me: "chocolate" her: "no problem. When do you need it by?" me: (wincing) "tomorrow?" her: "Okay. It'll be $16.50. What time you gonna come pick it up?" me: in utter amazement. So essentially, I got the EXACT cake I wanted with less than twenty-four hours notice, it cost even less than a bullshit cake from the supermarket, and zero stress for the sibs. This is THE place to go if you want something sweet and special to bring to any gathering. The rainbow cookies are my favorite thing, and are the best cookies I've ever had in my life. Considering I've eaten millions of cookies, that's saying something! The cakes are so beautiful . . . I can't even tell you. Everything on display is a work of art from the special holiday cookies to the eclairs to the muffins. They even have homemade pizza here you can buy for lunch. There's one woman in particular who works here that I just love - she is so nice. For awhile I was coming here every day for a muffin. Their blueberry muffins just melt in your mouth.
