Food was fine, but so expensive. $24 for lunch. And took forever to get my food. Luckily I get to the airport early.

What can I say it - this is at the airport so not that many choices here. When we ordered, we had to wait to get the item to go. 5 minutes- 10 minutes-15 minutes -finally, I ask about the sandwich and they say oh it will be at least another 20 minutes. What? You should have told me that from the beginning. I said we have to make our plane. So then they maned to give me someone else's who had to have their order custom made and they could wait. Ridiculous. You should have gold me this right away. I know these are individuals helping you with your order but just be honest and let us know. Also, too expensive for what it is. Apparently I should have read the reviews first- everyone felt the same way. read more

It is what it is. That's always been my take on over-priced, mediocre airport food. There are very few options in the Des Moines airport, so Arugula and Rye is probably the best choice if you're in a hurry and need something to eat. The original arugula breakfast sandwich was actually delicious: sautéed unions, egg and arugula on an everything bagel. With a bottle of water and bottle of orange juice, made it out in under $20! Every aspect requires improvement. Service: stood at counter for a full five minutes while the staff chatted about various jobs at the airport. Cleanliness: tables were all filthy. Food: the "Italian" sub was downright disgusting. Despite the description on the menu, there was only one little slice of capicola and five slices of pepperoni. No salami at all, and the "aioli" sauce was straight mayo. Then it was served hot! With mayo! Barf. $17 for that and a lemonade. Owner must be laughing all the way to the bank. read more

I waited over 15 minutes for a sandwich, and saw other customers after me receive their food before me. And then it was wrong - I had ordered a bread change - and very light on meat. Counter staff did not act like they cared. Service was slow. I complained to the manager that it wasn't first in first out at all. No refund or discount was offered. Pizza was ok. They were out of my first choices on toppings. Customer service is lacking. Management please come up with a system by either taking a name or giving a number for the order. Simply calling out what is ready is not acceptable because of multiple customers who may order the same item plus it puts the customer at ease to know you are indeed finished with their order. read more

Fresh salad bar and flatbreads at the Des Moines Airport! While waiting for my flight, I knew that I would be starving by the time I landed in Gateway Airport at Mesa, I decided I would get something to eat. I was not disappointed with the mushroom and spinach flatbread at Arugula & Rye. They made the flatbread fresh after ordering, and for $8, the serving was ample. The saucing was light and the greens and mushrooms tasted bright and earthy. It was large enough for 2, but of course, I ate it all, savoring each bite. I will be ordering another one the next time I fly out of DSM. read more

So here I am again at the DSM Airport, quickly running for my favorite Buffalo Chicken Flat Bread. I got something that was nothing like what I got here about half a year ago. Why did you change the recipe? Instead of chicken pieces, you put shredded chicken. I miss the ingredients that made this dish special. Such as spring onion, and feta cheese. Why? After making it though airport security we were told we were ten minutes too late for breakfast. They ran out of many items including bread so no sandwiches. The scant salad bar was $7.99 per pound (a real deal if you only want croutons). It was difficult to hear in the restaurant. This may have been an off day but it's been a poor first experience. It would appear from other reviews that this place struggles from time to time with large crowds and other logistics issues. I can see how that would happen because there are generally only 1 or 2 people working at a time. When I visited, it was relatively slow and my experience was that the service was quite prompt and friendly. The best place about eating here is the food selection, it's very healthy and the prices weren't bad at all. I recommend ordering a pizza or the salad bar. Both were very tasty. The sandwiches seem the slowest to make and worse, they didn't look all that great. There is a nice selection of alcohol and plenty of sweets to take on the flight later. Overall, I would recommend stopping in if you have lots of time or if it isn't very crowded. The view of the flight line is first rate and there is a ton of natural light. Unfortunately, the grilled cheese sandwich isn't grilled. You'd think with the amount of time it took to make the sandwich, it would have been to die for. The menu made it sound so good. The follow through was sadly lacking. read more

Any savvy traveler knows to keep their expectations low for airport restaurants, yet somehow this so-called deli fails to meet even rock-bottom standards. As someone that flies in and out of DSM often, I have started opting for the pre-packaged sandwiches at Hudson News as they taste better and healthier than what they have here. Despite the healthy-sounding restaurant name, all the sandwiches here are absolute grease bombs and, if you look closely at the menu, none of the sandwiches (aside from the veggie option) have any vegetables AT ALL. That's honestly quite shocking to me as even run of the mill fast food places like Subway feel much more "premium" than the cheesy disasters they have here. Your heart and arteries will not thank you for ordering a sandwich from here. Meanwhile, the salad bar looks extremely suspect and not fresh at all - everything looks like it's been sitting out a while. You couldn't pay me to get a salad from here. However, the biggest disappointment is with the chocolates and snacks on display next the counter. There are several nice options, yet the prices on most are not labeled because some are $10+ (!!) for a small bag of chocolates. Some of these snacks are twice as expensive as the sandwiches, which is not only highway robbery for Des Moines but also a bit of a deceitful practice. read more

Should've checked reviews before trying this place, it was extremely slow. I guess management doesn't care because there are limited options for food at the airport. People were extremely slow and kept getting orders wrong, I order a chicken sandwich with about 20 minutes before boarding, they forgot my order, got orders in front of me wrong so I had to leave and I paid $21 bucks for the sandwich, water and wine. They were just starting to make my sandwich when I left to check on my flight, had to board so waste of money. This place is a joke... avoid at all costs! Literally a 2-day old pre-made sandwich from Hudson News would be a better option. Currently every table is filled in here and only 2 have gotten their food. The folks working here seem to have no clue that their clientele are travelers trying to make a flight. Speaking of the folks working here, beyond being slow, they seem to be clueless. The man working the register asked a guest to spell a menu item for him so he could enter it into the register (if it's on the menu, you should know what it is) and I've now overheard 2 tables (those lucky enough to have their food) complain that the guy at the register took their order wrong (ie a sandwich on wheat toast came out as a sandwich on white with a side of wheat toast). After many countless attempts to search for food in the small Des Moines airport, I came across Arugula and Rye. I was craving a quick and light meal during my 45 minute layover. I opted for the Avocado Bacon toast because there was no possible way it could be a bad choice. I was so wrong. There was a thin layer of avocado spread on the toast with a handful of arugula, two bacon pieces and four radishes. The toast itself had a miserable texture and bland taste to it. I definitely do not think it was worth $6 and highly recommend fellow hungry flight passengers to spend their money elsewhere. Went to get some food from here after a severely delayed flight. Not sure if they pre-made this food and it sat out for hours or if they are just inept at making food, but this was a tasteless sandwich with no redeeming qualities.
