'Ten' came by on short notice, got on my roof and provided a detailed review. He was prompt and very professional and knowledgeable, and said his guys could be available the following week to repair the damaged section that was leaking. However, after texting him multiple times afterward I never got a response. I'm left to guess (12 days later) that the job was not big enough to be worth his time, despite him telling me that he could do the repair work. I have been a business owner in Cambridge for thirty years and manage 200 properties in the Cambridge and Somerville area. More than forty of our properties require a competent and dependable roofer to do annual inspections, make repairs, and propose new roofs when they were required. For several years Arya Roofing performed this valuable service for our clients and office, and Ten was enthusiastically endorsed and referred by our office. Unfortunately, this positive experience all came to a sad and disappointing end when I asked Ten to install a new roof, fascia and gutters at the home that I re-purchased in Winthrop. His quote is found below: "Total labor and material cost- $ 11500- Discount $2500= $9000. Gutters and fascia- Replace gutters with color gutters at $15 x linear foot and Fascia board at $13 per linear foot with PVC trim boards." While Ten Arya was kind to give me a "discount" on the roofing job, he chose not to address the replacement of the gutters and facia board that he was asked and expected to replace. Instead, he told me that he had made some repairs that would last me a few years until I did more work on the house, i.e. siding, decks, painting, etc. Anyone who does roofing, or any general contractor, knows that the replacement of soffits, fascia and gutters is not as easy and quick as roofing. There is less of a return, (profit for time spent), than roofing. The bottom line is that old wood gutters (that were lined with lead) were leaking withing 6 months, and we had squirrels eating through the wood soffit and fascia boards within a year. Ten did send a worker twice to my house to re-attach shingles that had blown off the main roof shortly that summer. (They were re-secured with long penny nails, not traditional roofing nails. (Illustrates how well they were originally secured) The bottom line is that people take advantage of you in life, whether it involves matters of the heart or simply business. You won't hear anything but a rave review from me. Ten did our complicated 3rd floor duplex roof --part flat roof, part mansard, plus a lower flat roof. For reasons I won't bore you with, his crew had to work hand in glove with two other contractors simultaneously (an insulation guy and a deck builder). A lot of roofers would hate that, coz if they don't agree on times, the job drags on. Ten and his crew worked very well with the other guys. The job was done excellently. I priced a lot of roofers and questioned him carefully on materials etc. He was very collaborative. I'd had prior experience with a roofer, and it was a disaster. (It was my first experience with a big contracting job as a homeowner. I've learned my lesson.) The very reason I hired Ten only 10 years after the prior job was because the prior job was lousy and the contractor a dishonest take-the-money-and-run guy. And don't get me started on the mess. They didn't do the seams or anything at ALL right --which is why I was gathering roofing nails off my driveway for years. NOT so with Ten's crew. They cleaned everything up. It's not just that Ten is responsive, fair thorough. He keeps a happy crew. I like that, both because a happy crew does better work, but also as a human, I like seeing guys working their butts off in the hot sun treated like equals. In the years since, a problem arose around a skylight. Ten showed up fast, got up on the roof himself and fixed it. After that job, I recommended him to a few friends. They were all ecstatic about Ten Arya, his crew, their attitude and their work. Good, capable, honorable contractors are precious. Just today, they came by and redid the small roof over my front porch. (I was pinching pennies and didn't get it done with the original job.) The task was extremely challenging because we had multiple layers of repairs and restorations on this old house preformed over its hundred years of existence. Tenzin's crew of 7-9 extremely professional and detail oriented roofers, carpenters, cleanup crew spent a full month stripping down to the naked of nakedness our 102 year old tree trunked house. Then rebuilding with the most cleaver, modern, and most technologically advanced and engineered materials on the market. Lots of roofers use the same materials that have been using for generations. However Tenzin is uniquely qualified because he stays ahead of the curve. He has a vast knowledge of the newest most recent technologically developed materials. I and my wife are eternally grateful for Tenzin's vast knowledge base and his ongoing creative suggestions that contributed immensely to the unique and clever design solutions that added longevity to our ocean climate threatened hundred year old dwelling. During the month that Arya / Tenzin's crews worked their magic 20 of our neighbors stopped by to inquire about the design and unique choices of materials. Additionally: At the end of each and every day two of Tenzin's crew would pick up all debris, search with a magnetic wheeled device and pickup all errant screws, nails. They managed not to damage a single flower planting around the perimeter of our home. They updated all the gutters and redirected the down spouts. They changed all of the plumbing breather PVC to deflect gusts of wind driven storm and hurricane driven rain. Tenzin suggested changing our electric service to 200 amp and facilitated the installation by recommending an electrical contractor who arrived the very next day and completed the permitting and switch over the very next day after that. Additionally when Tenzin's crew stripped away the skirting around the house we discovered that the front porch and the bathroom addition at the rear of the house had zero supporting beams. The porch and rear corner bathroom were literally hanging off the house. They were just holding on with a pray. My guess is that 100 years ago there were no building codes and these to structures were afterthoughts to the original structure. Tenzin suggested two fantastic, easy to work with carpenters who arrived the next day to analyze and price out the job. Two days later they returned with equipment to Jack up the front porch and layed in-ground concrete supports for both the porch and the cantilever rear bathroom. We had a sudden leak in our roof that was going into our ceiling every time it rained. Ten came by, diagnosed the problem and tried to patch the roof temporarily at no charge. He then helped us think through the different roofing options and did a nice job on installation, starting the job the same day the materials arrived, and keeping me updated with photos while I was traveling. We went with metal. A few weeks later now, it's pouring, and we're finally dry. It looks nice, too. Ten is knowledgeable, responsive and reliable. He would be my first call for any roofing issue. Other roofers and contractors had ripped her off over the course of many, many years. She, the owner is an older lady and one after another of them when up there, took her $ and did little or nothing. Tenzin-on-the-Job was all it took to repair years of abuse. Ten took down a chimney. So to preface, I did not end up getting work done... yet! We recently bought a house in Medford and with the crazy housing market and 8 offers on the house, we did not do a house inspection (we were kind of crazy too I guess). One corner of the basement seemed to be getting damp/more water than the other corners. A friend suggested it may be a break in the molding/broken or old gutters that were causing this. We called another company first - they came by for all of 2 minutes, didn't even let us know they were there, walked around the house, looked at the roof for 2 minutes and told us that the issue was the molding. Later, we got a quote for $520 to fix the molding - didn't even ask any questions/give us any information. Okay, so we thought let's get ONE more quote just to compare the two prices. Not really thinking that the issue wasn't actually the roof/gutter/molding. I called Arya Roofing yesterday and my call was returned an hour later (inbox was full, but saw my missed call). Ten scheduled to come to my house the very next day (today). This morning, Ten was running a little bit late, which I understand since morning traffic sucks. When he got to my house, he called to let me know he was there, and I met him outside, where he introduced himself and shook my hand (first guy didn't do this). I explained the issue to him and he said that most likely if only one corner is damp then it's not a roof/gutter/molding issue. He recommended to get the foundation looked at since that's most likely the issue. He explained how our house is on a slope and is most likely collecting water, but made sure to say that he only knows about roofs so can't tell me anything for sure. He's also going to put me in touch with a foundation guy to take a look at my house. Ten asked if I knew that we had asbestos siding, which I did know, and said if we are planning to stay there long term to think about putting vinyl over it while it is allowed by the town - because some towns require the removal of asbestos siding and not just covering it up. He asked if we were first time home buyers, which we are, and said typically when you fix a house, you should work from top to bottom - roof, gutters, molding, windows, and so on down, unless it is a foundation issue. He didn't push me to do anything - said I should really get the foundation looked at before doing anything else, and that the roof if it's not leaking then we should be good. I really wanted to write this review because of how great Ten was - not pushing just for business, and to help me solve the issue at hand even if he wasn't the one who would be fixing it. Great customer service like this is surprisingly very hard to come by - Ten's honesty and helpfulness are a great sign that I would be able to trust him if I were to get work done. I called Ten [after reading his Yelp reviews] and left a message letting him know I might have a problem with my gutter. He called me right back that day, and told me he'd come and take a look the next day. The next day he called from my apt. and apologized for not having the right size ladder for a roof that high and said he'd come back next week and check it out. He did, and called me immediately to report that the roof and gutters were in very good shape but he suggested I have a mason repoint the brick in specific areas, etc. When I asked him if he wanted my address [to send me a bill] he said no because he hadn't done any work! I was/am very paranoid and skeptical about things like Yelp when they seems too good to be true (I always think, what, all these reviews are written by his relatives, right? LOL) but in this case I will add my great review to all the others. Although he didn't perform any work he was so professional, called me back immediately, and seemed extremely knowledgeable in his assessment of the roof, gutters and brick wall - plus gave me the suggestion of what I should do to fix the leaks, which meant hiring someone OTHER THAN HIM to do the job [repointing the brick]!! I never would have known had he said 'Sure, I'll put in an extra downspout for you for $500.' What do I know about roofing? I probably would have believed him. Arya Roofing provided me with one of the best home project experiences in my 25 years as a homeowner. Ten was the first of four to give an estimate for the new flat roof on my three-family house. He offered the option of TPO (thermoplastic) instead of the standard black rubber. TPO is only around 15% more. I'm very glad we went with this choice. His predictions of cooler summer temps on the third floor were completely accurate. The surface is so reflective in the daytime that it's hard to look down at the roof. In winter, the thicker substrate should also hold the heat more effectively. Moreover, not only did Ten give what I considered to be the best and fairest estimate, his workers were very polite and hardworking. They left the property immaculate. We've had ice damming problems for awhile and have tried to get other roofers to come out and assess the damage with no luck. After the last blizzard, we had large icicles hanging down from various points of our roof. My partner freaked out and wanted to call a roofer immediately. Had a great experience with Ten and his team. After getting a really reasonable quote from Ten, I had to wait a few weeks before work could start. But in the meantime all my questions were answered and Ten brought over shingle samples for the colors we were interested in. Then when the job started, his team was really professional and listened to all my requests of taking off an old antenna and putting in a new bathroom vent. Job was done in just under two days, and exactly according to expectations set by Ten and team. He did our roof in two days for much less than another bid and he and his crew were great at cleaning up and making sure no nails were left, etc. even though it was a windy day and probably 90 degrees (it was Sept). I had intended to write my review then but forgot. Fast forward to the huge rain last week when there was a leak coming through our heating vent in our ceiling. I emailed Ten at night and he and his crew came out the next day while I was at work. He found that there was old caulking on a window that was probably letting the water in or perhaps a cracked piece of our siding. He caulked them both up on the spot and said there was no charge. I was beyond happy because it was a random thing to find but he knows his field and got to the heart of the problem, fixed it and was happy to also send me photos of everything. I choose Arya Roofing to put a new roof on our condo in JP based on Ten's great reviews and his quoted price, which was the lowest of 3 total bids I got and I was not disappointed. -Ten showed up when he said he would for the estimate and installed a missing shingle while he was up there to stop the immediate leak free of charge -Quoted the lowest price while giving a few choices of optional materials and stuck to that price when the work was complete -Did the job when he said he would and did it in only a few days -Cleaned up well after the job -Provided all necessary paperwork for the warranty -Even came back several months later to assess another leak I was having related to the chimney that had nothing to do with his work All in all, it's been about 5 months since the job and I couldn't be happier with the work done. read more

I own a top-floor unit of a four unit building in Charlestown. Roof is very old and I'd been getting leaks from ice dams on occasion. I wanted a quick-fix but also quote for new roof which I'm hoping we'll get done in next year. Ten came out and was super honest about situation in that it's hard to identify where ice dams may be forming but pointed out all the possible access points where there were visible tears, and also a not-to-code wrap connecting our central air unit. He came out within a few weeks and did the patching, etc. for a very reasonable fee. His quote for new roof was also reasonable compared to two other contractors we had out before that were absurdly over priced (it's amazing what some contractors think they can charge when its a condo building vs. single house). Anyway my overall experience with Arya Roofing has been great and I would highly recommend them. read more

Tenzin is THE MAN!!! My gutters needed replacing. I called him based on his ratings, left a message, and he called back ASAP the next day. You know how you're paranoid that your contractor is going to rip you off? NOT WITH TEN. The real testament of a craftsman is his ability to think CREATIVELY to solve a problem. I told him my priorities were value and function. He took an assessment and presented 2 or 3 ways of accomplishing the same function, and explained the short and long term ramifications of cost, function, aesthetics, and maintenance. I'm often wary of the crew that a foreman keeps, but trust me when I say that Ten's crew is motivated, sharp, and the best at what they do. Interesting fact: Tenzin speaks five languages fluently. Ten installed a roof on our 2-family house in 2016 and did an outstanding job. So this review was already long overdue . Then Ten reminded me of why he stands head and shoulders above the rest when he helped us - over 5 years later - with a problem caused by another roofer. We moved into a single family with a roof that is only 4 years old. The roof is leaking but the guy who installed it will not honor the warranty because "all houses take in some water," and "it's no big deal." Ugh. So I call Ten to find out what *should* have been done and what we need to do to prevent further damage going forward. He explained that our roof should have soffit vents whereas the other guy used box/exhaust vents as intake vents, and placed them too low (toward gutters) on a roof with low slope (bad). Ten explained it all carefully whereas the guy who did the work didn't want to acknowledge any other venting alternatives exist or even answer my questions about how to prevent same issue from happening again. said the box vents serve a "greater good" by keeping the attic cool. but our attic is not cool ! It's really hot - because he didn't provide an adequate intake venting system. hence the ice dams. Really wish the people we had bought our house from had used Ten. would have saved us a lot of trouble. read more

All of Ten's reviews are right on. He was quick to return my call after I found him on Yelp, and showed up to look at the roof one day later. He was the only roofer who actually climbed up on the roof to evaluate, and even provided pictures via his iPhone of what the issues were. He did the same during the job as well, allowing me to monitor progress from my desk at work. I had one challenging neighbor who Ten managed to placate without issue as his guys pushed forward with the work. Overall, Ten and his guys are extremely responsive, competitively priced and pride themselves on excellent customer service and quality. He gave us an estimate over the phone and, once we had a day set, he came over as promised and the work was done quickly, efficiently, and cleanly. It was a great pleasure working with Arya roofing. I had spoken on the phone to Ten Arya the owner and told him that I was looking for someone to come out and take a look at the roof of a home I was looking to purchase. I told him my concerns and asked what it would cost to have him come out and take a look. He said that all estimates are free. I told him I thought the roof may be fairly new but he insisted that all estimates were free. He arranged to meet me at the house the next day. Ten came out and was up on the roof within minutes; which; and this is a pretty steep roof about 3 stories up; I would have been satisfied due to the grade of the roof if he just looked around on the edge. He jumped right up on the roof and walked all around it and spent a good amount of time on the roof taking pictures of any concerns he had. When he came down he told me all about the roof; the types of shingles used and how it was installed. He was courteous and very professional.
