My son and I had a delightful culinary adventure Monday! Our initial choice, another Japanese restaurant, unfortunately closed at 3 and we arrived at 3:45. However, serendipity led us to Ashai, a charming Japanese establishment just around the corner. Arriving a little after four, we learned the sushi chefs wouldn't begin their artistry until 4:30. To our delight, the staff warmly welcomed us inside, offering us water and inviting us to peruse the menu while we waited. The restaurant itself is a cozy haven, beautifully appointed and radiating a tranquil atmosphere. The staff's friendliness added to the welcoming ambiance. We eventually ordered the yakisoba with chicken, a dish that proved to be the highlight of the evening. The yakisoba came with a salad with ginger dressing, a miso soup and steamed rice. You can also get fried rice for an additional two dollars if you choose.The yakisoba was exceptional; perfectly cooked noodles, tender yet possessing a satisfying chew, were complemented by the vibrant flavors of carrots and green onions. The sauce was simply divine, adding a rich depth that elevated the dish to new heights. It was, without a doubt, the best yakisoba I've had in a long time. To complete our meal, we sampled an avocado roll, tuna roll, and salmon roll. These too were expertly prepared, showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients and impeccable presentation. Overall, Ashai provided a truly memorable dining experience. The friendly service, coupled with the exquisite food and comfortable setting, made for a perfect evening. Really great hole-in-the-wall ambiance! There were a couple larger groups here and a few other customers coming in and out. But it doesn't seem as well known. They do have a parking lot at the back, but we parked over by the funeral home since spots fill up quickly. It's a bit confusing to figure out. We didn't know where the host stand was since we didn't realize there were two entrances. We entered the door off the street, but the host stand is on the other side of the room. The entrance on that end leads to the parking lot. And the room is small. So it gets cramped if you're waiting at the host stand just standing wherever. We did get seated right away. The service was quick! My sister and I got green tea while my friend ordered wine. We also got gyoza and the house salad which comes with the ginger dressing. Delicious! The vegetable gyoza tasted like they made it from scratch. For the sushi, we got: yum yum, lotus roll, cherry blossom, unagi, asahi, and spicy salmon crunch roll. We all enjoyed everything but the unagi had quite a lot of avocado. It's just a preference though. I also felt like the cherry blossom wasn't flavorful. I've had it at another sushi restaurant before but this version wasn't my favorite. Regardless, everything else was very good and tasted fresh! We got pretty full quickly and had to take our sushi home. Overall, great service! They were quick bringing everything out, but we didn't feel rushed. I would come back! read more

I was finally able to patronize Asahi after years of driving by it. We stopped by last Sunday evening around 6:30 PM. Fortunately it's wasn't too crowded and we were seated right away. It's a smaller restaurant but has a good amount of seating inside, including a sushi bar that maybe has six seats. It's a little confusing when you walk in, since you have to walk to the back of the restaurant for the hostess stand. Once we figured it out we were seated right away. They have a simple drinks menu, which includes sake, wine and beer. We settled on a bottle of sparkling wine! We ordered sushi rolls, appetizers to share and salads. Everything came out quickly. The ginger salad had one of the best dressings - it's a typical ginger flavor but this dressing is so smooth and creamy. I would highly recommend the salad. We also ordered the shrimp suhumi and tuna takiki. I'm looking forward to going back to try more items on the menu! read more

My family and I used to dine here frequently so when we were craving some sushi recently, we decided to give it a shot. We parked in the back parking lot and used that entrance. The hostess greeted us right away and showed us to a table. Pleasant surprise to not have a wait on a Friday night especially at a smaller restaurant. I ordered a giant roll and he ordered chicken teriyaki with rice, as a main course. We also enjoyed spring rolls and ginger house salads. The restaurant is clean, organized, not noisy which is a big plus for any one with hearing challenges and they have recently expanded the space. The staff is eager to please and service is very accommodating. Asahi is a lovely little sushi-and-more restaurant in St. Matthews. I dined with several sushi-loving friends, and was overall very pleased with my seaweed salad and the variety of veggie-friendly sushi options. The seaweed salad could have used more seaweed and no iceberg lettuce, but the flavor was spot on. I ordered the AAC roll (avocado, asparagus, cucumber), which was delicious - the perfect balance of veggies, rice, and sauces. Their wasabi is properly spicy - I feel like wasabi doesn't really count if my nose isn't running, my eyes aren't watering, and the back of throat isn't just a little numb. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and was able to provide an alternative option for one friend with a food allergy. In addition to sushi, they offer dinner entrees, which come with miso soup, salad, and rice. Several options I am hankering to try include tofu teriyaki, vegetable tempura, and vegetable udon. Spicy tuna is my go to with something crunchy on it. Determined to try something different, I ordered some spicy tuna roll that was deep fried. Another roll such had spicy crab and cream cheese. He had good conversation, and their wine selection was fair. They sold Chloe chardonnay which I find difficult to locate, but they had a good glass of it. I think he had a whole Sapporo to himself. I think what was bad about the service was no one greeted us, we didn't know where to sit and we got a plate of food that we were confused by because we hadn't ordered yet, we just was like, oh I that's not ours. The ginger dressing was the best I've had, it was very fresh and had a great balance of spicy and sweet. I ordered the cherry blossom roll along with a California roll. Both were much larger than I've seen at other Japanese places. I was very pleased with the amount of salmon in the cherry blossom roll. It was also perfectly rolled tight so that it's easy to eat with chop sticks (especially if you are still very much a novice like me). The California roll was extremely flavorful and creamy! The miso soup was salty and light just like it should. The tofu was soft and moist perfectly cooked. Will definitely be coming back! read more

I came in on a Wednesday night around 830pm. Place still had diners and was a bit loud. I ordered a combo plate that had California Rolls and sushi. I also got a side salad and one order of amaebi shrimp (came with deep fried shrimp heads). The side salad had a yummy ginger carrot dressing. It was refreshing. The California rolls could have used some more flavor but presentation was nice and it was a good portions. Sushi was only average--I've had bette, especially the tuna. It was too artificially red. What to get: sashimi Time seated: 0 mins (Thursday 1:30PM for 1) Time food arrived: less than 5 mins Ambiance: casual sit-down Parking: small shared lot in back, side street parking ~~Parking~~ Not sure how other patrons do it, but I park behind the restaurant in their tiny, shared lot. There's an entrance back there so it's doable. Otherwise I think there's street parking on the side. ~~Food~~ I'm selfish with my sushi and I want as much fish as possible. Sashimi is my go-to, but occasionally I'll pick out rolls with more fish to other stuff (rice, avocado, sauce, etc) ratio. I started with salmon sashimi, which gives you three thick slices. The quality was good and the pieces sweet and tasty with the fattiness of the fish. If they had a purely salmon sashimi entree item, there'd be no contest for me as to what I'd pick. My two rolls of choice were the Cherry Blossom roll and the Far East roll. 8 pieces per roll and they were well assembled so they didn't fall apart and sliced to sizes that you can actually eat. I'm happy they didn't have a lot of extra stuff to complicate the flavors of the roll. The pieces of fish aren't huge, but each bite was delicious all the same. For one person, two rolls is over enough so I was just barely able to finish all on my own. Bonus: the chef made 2 nigiri rolls on the house. One salmon and the other a white fish (I'm not well versed in the different kinds of fish actually). With even less pieces, I realized that I really enjoyed the taste of the sushi rice. ~~Service~~ Service is extremely quick, even with a few other diners eating as well. For lunch rush, I'm sure people want to be in and out quickly. Take it for what you will. My server was so efficient that she brought out the check before I had decided I was hungry for another roll haha. I think it'd be perfect for customers who are looking for a quick bite! Side note: the soy sauce containers were exceptionally clean! I don't complain about them in restaurants, but I'm pleasantly surprised they were pristinely cleaned here. I had planned to visit Asahi a couple weeks back for lunch then got blindsided with the knowledge that they are not currently open for lunch. But I was back in at Mathews at dinner time and decided to stop in with my lady friend. The restaurant was small but very nice. It felt sophisticated but cozy. We were seated immediately. The waiter was very helpful and was always around. I almost felt bad for being so indecisive. But eventually I ordered a spicy salmon crunch roll with some gyoza as a starter. I've never really had sushi before. I'd had some Kroger sushi which I had heard it was good especially when it's $5 on Wednesday. It was fine but I wouldn't say that it was mind blowing so I was unsure of what to expect at Asahi. Fortunately the sushi completely changed my mind and now I just want more sushi. I ate my whole roll in mere minutes and wanted more. It was so good. The flavor melded perfectly and I didn't have a part of the roll that took longer to chew than the others like in Kroger sushi. I forgot to take pictures but it looked spectacular, the gyoza was also very good but compared to the sushi I practically forgot about it.
