My wife loved her chicken teriyaki. My Tonkatsu ramen was decent. I am a Ramen snob so.... Plum Sake' was very sweet but delish... overall a low 4 stars but I'll be back to try the other Ramen and stuff.

My son and I had a delightful culinary adventure Monday! Our initial choice, another Japanese restaurant, unfortunately closed at 3 and we arrived at 3:45. However, serendipity led us to Ashai, a charming Japanese establishment just around the corner. Arriving a little after four, we learned the sushi chefs wouldn't begin their artistry until 4:30. To our delight, the staff warmly welcomed us inside, offering us water and inviting us to peruse the menu while we waited. The restaurant itself is a cozy haven, beautifully appointed and radiating a tranquil atmosphere. The staff's friendliness added to the welcoming ambiance. We eventually ordered the yakisoba with chicken, a dish that proved to be the highlight of the evening. The yakisoba came with a salad with ginger dressing, a miso soup and steamed rice. You can also get fried rice for an additional two dollars if you choose. The yakisoba was exceptional; perfectly cooked noodles, tender yet possessing a satisfying chew, were complemented by the vibrant flavors of carrots and green onions. The sauce was simply divine, adding a rich depth that elevated the dish to new heights. It was, without a doubt, the best yakisoba I've had in a long time. To complete our meal, we sampled an avocado roll, tuna roll, and salmon roll. These too were expertly prepared, showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients and impeccable presentation. Overall, Ashai provided a truly memorable dining experience. The friendly service, coupled with the exquisite food and comfortable setting, made for a perfect evening. Bathrooms were nice and clean too I highly recommend it!

Now open with their new expanded dining room!! My family comes here every year for christmas eve and it never disappoints. Their ginger salad is to die for, great apps and so many options for everyone. Service is friendly and the vibe is perfect. Probably some of the best fried rice in town!!!

Sushi rolls were fresh and tasty. California and yum yum were standard. Double spicy roll was not very spicy. Fantasia roll is topped with different kinds of fish roe and was filling. Not pictured--gyoza and chicken teriyaki. Gyoza came with 6 pieces, ve try crispy outside, warm inside, and a sweet sauce that was very good. Chicken teriyaki was very saucy and included Italian seasoning/oregano which was a strange flavor profile. Service is fast and friendly. Small inside. Good spot for a date or to catch up with a friend.

Really great hole-in-the-wall ambiance! There were a couple larger groups here and a few other customers coming in and out. But it doesn't seem as well known. They do have a parking lot at the back, but we parked over by the funeral home since spots fill up quickly. It's a bit confusing to figure out. We didn't know where the host stand was since we didn't realize there were two entrances. We entered the door off the street, but the host stand is on the other side of the room. The entrance on that end leads to the parking lot. And the room is small. So it gets cramped if you're waiting at the host stand just standing wherever. We did get seated right away. The service was quick! My sister and I got green tea while my friend ordered wine. We also got gyoza and the house salad which comes with the ginger dressing. Delicious! The vegetable gyoza tasted like they made it from scratch. For the sushi, we got: yum yum, lotus roll, cherry blossom, unagi, asahi, and spicy salmon crunch roll. We all enjoyed everything but the unagi had quite a lot of avocado. It's just a preference though. I also felt like the cherry blossom wasn't flavorful. I've had it at another sushi restaurant before but this version wasn't my favorite. Regardless, everything else was very good and tasted fresh! We got pretty full quickly and had to take our sushi home. Overall, great service! They were quick bringing everything out, but we didn't feel rushed. I would come back!

I came here with friends around the time they opened and it was nice and quiet with nice pop music playing in the background. Within the hour more people came in and you can tell that a lot of people like this place :) All the sushi options looked amazing and I would want to try coming here again another time to try another roll!

I was finally able to patronize Asahi after years of driving by it. We stopped by last Sunday evening around 6:30 PM. Fortunately it's wasn't too crowded and we were seated right away. It's a smaller restaurant but has a good amount of seating inside, including a sushi bar that maybe has six seats. It's a little confusing when you walk in, since you have to walk to the back of the restaurant for the hostess stand. Once we figured it out we were seated right away. They have a simple drinks menu, which includes sake, wine and beer. We settled on a bottle of sparkling wine! We ordered sushi rolls, appetizers to share and salads. Everything came out quickly. The ginger salad had one of the best dressings - it's a typical ginger flavor but this dressing is so smooth and creamy. I would highly recommend the salad. We also ordered the shrimp suhumi and tuna takiki. I'm looking forward to going back to try more items on the menu!

    Fruit fly on wall

We sat in the corner booth and were overwhelmed with the amount of fruit flies that surrounded our table and the one next to ours. They kept landing in our drinks and on our food. I was constantly shewing them away from my face and lost my appetite. We couldn't finish our food and left shortly after it was brought to the table.

Cute little spot with parking around back. You can grab a table or sit at the small bar. Three of us went. I got the New Orleans roll which I really enjoyed. The Asahi roll and crunchy shrimp roll were also really good. Overall great sushi and super fresh!

Receipt showing request for extra Wasabi for each roll

Ordered pickup, Chirashi and 5 rolls, requested extra Wasabi, received one little squirter of Wasabi to be split between 3 people, completely useless. Did not put lid on correctly on soup, spilled half of it fried rice and salad, soaking it. Ruined entire meal.

Still so good!! Sashimi is always in really big pieces, much bigger than most sushi spots. Love their ginger salad! Got the edamame this time and it was lovely.

Asahi is a lovely little sushi-and-more restaurant in St. Matthews. I dined with several sushi-loving friends, and was overall very pleased with my seaweed salad and the variety of veggie-friendly sushi options. The seaweed salad could have used more seaweed and no iceberg lettuce, but the flavor was spot on. I ordered the AAC roll (avocado, asparagus, cucumber), which was delicious - the perfect balance of veggies, rice, and sauces. Their wasabi is properly spicy - I feel like wasabi doesn't really count if my nose isn't running, my eyes aren't watering, and the back of throat isn't just a little numb. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and was able to provide an alternative option for one friend with a food allergy. In addition to sushi, they offer dinner entrees, which come with miso soup, salad, and rice. Several options I am hankering to try include tofu teriyaki, vegetable tempura, and vegetable udon. I'll keep you posted.

Asahi has great sushi but small dining area and terrible ginger dressing. I would recommend to locals who are looking for carry out.

He told me that Wagyu Potsticker is the best one which he is right. I love it. Careless Hipster cocktail is my favorite as the flavors are good and strong too. I had Golden Rolls which is delicious! Chili Edamame is not bad, I wish for more spicy in it. Then the best way to end the night is having Espresso Martini with complimentary dessert for my birthday. They do other champagne sake but I want the dessert instead. I love this dessert. This is unique experience and it might not be for everyone's favor. I enjoyed the most of time.

From the moment I entered the door, the receptionist was very nice, professional, and accommodating. Sarah my server was incredibly personable and hospitable from the very beginning. She checked whether it was my first time visiting and once she found out it was, she guided me through all of the menus and answered every question I had along the way. She truly made my evening better and left me with an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. I was checked on throughout my meal by multiple people. The Chef and also who I believe was the manager. And I don't mean the usual obligatory walk by, ask how your meal is and move on. I mean a genuine introduction and inquiry about your experience and even finished with a handshake. I was made to feel very welcomed throughout. I forgot to take pictures of half my food because I got too excited! Lol. The truffle garlic edamame was super flavorful, the Wagyu croquettes were crispy, tender, and the sauce on top was very flavorful (this one wasn't my personal favorite, but was still very good), the A5 Kaburi Garlic Kushi was cooked perfect, seasoned well, and melt in your mouth (if your looking for Wagyu but not trying to break the bank, this is for you.) The A5 Olive Wagyu however was truly an experience. Melt in your mouth bliss. Overall, 11/10 highly recommend. This is one of my new favorites in Louisville. Coincidentally, it's right next door to MeeshMeesh which has been my all time favorite for years. Sake A GoGo is right up there with them. Thanks again to Sarah for a wonderful dinner.

It's summer and sizzly hot and electrical issues happen. We deal. This would easily have been overlooked if the service or the food had compensated. But our server could not have cared less about us and was aloof and cold, expressionless. Took forever to come to our table and barely checked on us the entire meal. I think my cocktail was called the Tokyo Pop? Not positive but you have to get it. Gin, bubbles, sake, and a hint of lemon in a flute glass. Refreshing, a hint of sweet, a hint of lemon, and extremely drinkable. It would be too easy to throw a ton of these back. But I was demure and had one. I enjoyed the calamari--my go-to here. Crispy, with a bit of heat from pickled peppers, a bit a of sweet form a sweet glaze, and a nice herby zing from mint, herbs, and scallions. They also top the calamari with a a nice portion of greens dressed in a lemon vinaigrette, making this appetizer feel close to a light meal. I am absolutely obsessed with the ponzu mayo that comes on the side. An absolutely delightful touch. I also enjoyed the chocolate cream pot. Talk about decadent.
