Asahi has great sushi but small dining area and terrible ginger dressing. I would recommend to locals who are looking for carry out.

The reason I don't give this place five stars is because it's pretty much your standard Japanese restaurant. It's nothing more special then any other Japanese restaurant in Louisville. The reason i give it three stars instead of four is because of the sanitary conditions of the restaurant. The restaurant received an "A" from the dept of codes, but that does not mean a whole lot. It's obvious that the place does not get a cleaning after every work day. The food is pretty good. I enjoy it and I enjoyed it enough to where I would come back. It has flavor but again does not separate it from the other Japanese restaurants in Louisville. The staff was also friendly. The prices are pretty basic. Somewhat expensive but understandable bc they have to make there money. Again, if the place was cleaner I would have given it a 3.5-4 stars. They keep the place dark enough to where you won't notice. This restaurant has a very nice and inviting atmosphere. As soon as we came in we were seated. We got our Miso soup first. It was really good. I ordered the Bulgoki with fried rice. The meat was good but I didn't care much for the sauce it was in. (That is the one and only reason I'm not giving 5 stars.) My dad got the chicken teriyaki which was really good. I will be getting that next time. I'm not a sushi person but my brothers ordered the ones pictured. My mom got the pork egg rolls and they were fantastic with the sauce. The sushi managed to lack flavor (and left us wondering how fresh it was), the ginger salad dressing was far too sweet, and the egg rolls tasted fresh from the freezer section. Stopped in for anniversary night hoping for something special. Experience got off to a rough start. First off, they need to close off the door to the back parking lot. They have no one staffing it (even though the door indicates that they do) and it makes things very confusing. We walked to the front (which was hectic and difficult) and they thought we were leaving. Then when we were finally directed to a table, there was a woman perched there making a to-go order with an employee so we couldn't sit. In short, they have a very disorganized process. My husband noted that the surrounding tables weren't well bussed or cleaned. Ours was missing needed items and was slightly grimy. Our server was showing a bit of attitude but was competent. The rest of the staff, especially the chefs were friendly however. We ordered the rainbow roll and the shrimp crunch roll. Our order came out at a reasonable time and the flavor was good. The texture of the crunch roll gave it something over the rainbow roll. The salmon on the nigiri tasted good and fresh. The rice was seasoned very well. Overall the food experience was good with quality ingredients but I felt the combinations in the rolls were average in flavor and the prices were above average compared to other places. This isn't a bad place to grab a bite by any means but I'm not sure if I would choose it again over places nearby. Especially not for a celebration dinner. read more

Asahi is average sushi wise (haven't tried the other food). It's not bad at all, I'd even say it's good, just not great. Their fish and rolls don't seem to have a lot of flavor. The fish isn't fishy or anything at least. Their service is always really nice. However, they are no longer open for lunch, so I took off a star for that. There is almost nowhere to get sushi now for lunch in Louisville, other than a certain place that I won't name that I think has downright bad sushi and isn't even worth it. I've heard a few call Asahi that and I don't know how I feel about that yet, but I do like that... -the menu lists the ingredients that are inside the roll and outside the roll -they always give you a freebie dessert (usually a half of an orange easily and fancily sliced for plucking out the pieces) -the interior is clean, in terms of both decor and sanitation -they offer 39 different specialty rolls and there's quite the variety of fish and both cooked and uncooked options I've had a mixed bag of experiences here over the last several months I've added Asahi into my rotation of sushi stops. During my most recent experience, I found the rice to be too dry and the taste of the rice to be a little too domineering. Overall, I think Wild Ginger has more creative rolls despite a much lower number of options. Prices at Asahi are on par with other places in town, about $9-14 for a specialty roll. read more

Start with the house ginger salad. It is larger than most ginger salads and is extra tasty. They have a short wine list, but I like that they have a pairing chart. They also have some beer. We had the double spicy roll, after all I got the Pinot Noir that said it went with fish and spicy food. It was good and it did have a little kick. We also had the Volcano Roll, which was even better than the Double Spicy Roll. We had recently had a Volcano Roll at another sushi place that was huge, so I was a little worried that it was going to be overwhelming, but it wasn't. It was perfect. I like when sushi is rolled a little smaller. Sometimes it is so huge I feel like biting it in half. These sushi rolls had no chance of falling apart. They were rolled very well. I have to comment, on the music. After being in a few sushi restaurants lately that have 70s greatest hits playing, it was nice to have music that seemed more appropriate, to the setting. I would definitely go back and try some more rolls and some of their other dishes. read more

Our usual dinner at Asahi went predictably well. Service is always fast efficient, cordial and helpful. This time we ordered off the blackboard behind the sushi bar and were treated to a jalapeño topped sushi confection that was a blast of flavor and Mexican heat. In my last review I complained that all the Louisville sushi bars lacked imagination. Maybe I'm stuck in a rut and not ordering with enough adventure. I have limited my selections to exclude sushi that includes cream cheese, beef, barbecue, and, usually, fried seafood or shellfish (although I love spider rolls). I prefer sushi with all raw ingredients. I read reviews that say sushi outside of New York isn't worth eating. That the popularity of sushi away from the fresh catch coastal areas is rooted in ignorance of fine cuisine. I think foodies who complain that the sanctity of any cuisine is rendered mediocre when it becomes widely affordable deserve all the disappointments that come with chronic snootiness and rampant narcissism. Anyway, I'm venturing out now. I may even try the Cajun maki with cooked crawfish next time. In any case, see you at the sushi bar. read more

I've always been a big fan of Asahi, I tell everyone I know to try it. I don't get a chance to dine at Asahi very often because of driving distance,so when my wife and I go it's a treat. My recent visit was a big disappointment. First let me say the service was great and I tipped accordingly. We ordered appetizers consisting of egg rolls, California roll and a lobster vegetable dish. For the main dish seafood with shrimp,scallops and muscles. The egg rolls were horrendous, probably been frozen to long. The inside of the egg rolls were doughy and undercooked. I didn't recognize any flavor in the center. The seafood dish was, I hate to say,was horrible. The shrimp were chewy with a terrible texture,shrimp should be white and firm, not clear and chewy,same with the scallops. My new motto when ordering shrimp is to tell the server, "If the shrimp are not white,don't bother bringing them to the table." In past visits everything tasted fresh and flavorful. The California roll was acceptable but not great. I don't know what happened here but I could tell most everything we had had been frozen to long. The staff are great, service is top notch, and the ambiance is nice. I'm hoping this time was a rarity. I've been there many times and it was rare to give a F for the food. I hope they read this and go back to what was there norm. read more

Thought we would try this place, not disappointed! Got gyoza and shumai for appetizer and they were out quickly and tasted great! The rolls we ordered were also nice! Except the yellowtail which tasted okay, but may have been close to its expiration. Downside is the parking situation, there is very little parking and the restaurant is in a small complex with other businesses. Service was okay, but a little confusing as three separate people tried to get a drink order. But our drinks were refilled quickly. I would definitely return! read more

We went with a group of six, getting teriyaki, hand rolls, regular rolls - crunchy, eel, salmon, and more. Everything was delicious. My husband and I have sampled some of the better sushi places in NYC and LA, and this seemed a good offering for the area - as usual, each place has their way of spicing things, nuanced differences in miso soups, etc. But this place was good. I came in and ordered the tofu teriyaki with fried rice, miso soup and ginger salad. I didn't eat the soup or salad because I never do. Not a fan so no points off there. The tofu was silken so very mushy and not fried well. I didn't eat it and soggy tofu covered in teriyaki sauce was underwhelming. The meal came with hardly any vegetables so I snagged some broccoli from my bf plate. The broccoli was frozen and steamed and not seasoned. Very watery broccoli that did not touch a wok or stir fry. The best thing was the fried rice which I devoured and added their awesome spicy mayo on top. I will definitely pass on returning. read more

Just placed an order via Grubhub and it was horrible. I called the location to request utensils, and they turned it into an ordeal. They wanted to charge extra for a item on a sushi roll, that was listed as a standard ingredient. There was no mention of extra fees on the website. When the restaurant was called two people kept trying to charge extra. They claimed there were no managers on duty. Instead of offering the roll and not charging Xtra, they hung up on me. Asahi has fantastic sushi and a lovely atmosphere! I've been a regular here for years now and typically get the morning roll (deep fried yumminess). My fiance loves the nigiri, the sunrise roll, the Asahi roll, the New Orleans roll... pretty much every sushi on the menu. Just an fyi, the price point at Asahi is slightly higher than that of Oiishi (shout out to Oiishi! they're great too!), but it is worth it. Asahi stays busy and the servers do their best to keep up with the demand. That being said, we've never left disappointed due to the service or any aspect of the restaurant. I'm a minimalist when it comes to sushi. As a landlocked state, I feel that sushi in Kentucky tries to over-sauce rolls to mask the lacking freshness. I understand where I am on the map, but seriously-- I prefer some semblance of tuna or salmon to go along with the blob of spicy mayo on the plate. Which brings me to my review! I truly feel that Asahi uses the least amount of sauce in the rolls and really let's the fish shine. I didn't even have to tell the chef to be easy or light on the sauce. I ordered the three-fish sashimi (comes in 9 pieces) and the flavors were so clean. I also ordered the Monster Roll, which has salmon, white tuna, and tuna atop, and that was really lovely. The hubs enjoyed the Chicago Big Bull roll, too. I've bookmarked this spot so I can return. I've got to try a hand roll for my next visit, and I'm coming back for the sashimi! read more
