The staff were friendly but the lumber quality is very low. I would never buy here again. I did a deck with pressure treated wood and it's terrible. Their machines dig it full of holes which leaves the wood splintered and cracking. We had to buy outdoor rugs to cover the deck because no one can walk on it barefoot. We've had to apologize to many guests who got splinters that had to be dug out of feet. So now I've spent all this money to build a deck I have to cover up. Huge waste. read more

Not sure what happened this morning? My girlfriend and I were trying to purchase a nice exterior door similar to one we purchased at the Berkeley store a couple of months ago.I approached a sales rep, which was a tall middle aged guy with a graying pony tail. He was at first distant, which quickly turned to rudeness and in a minute or two it turned into insulting. My girlfriend and I turned to each other simultaneously and said let's go. This was amazing. To be clear, the actual lumber yard is fine. But the door showroom is terrible. I've been there a few times, there's no help desk or central point to ask for a salesman. There also seems to be no method to the way the store is laid out. If you go looking for something specific in mind, it's almost impossible to find. Which is why it would be nice to have a central place where employees can assist you... but that's the problem. I've been in a few times looking for a door, or hardware, and these sales people in their cubicles won't even acknowledge your existence. Never in the few times I've been there as anyone even asked if they could help me. Even if they were one the phone, how about a quick, "I'll be with you in a minute" Today, they were all on their phones, and I heard one person talking about what they ordered at Burger King... yeah. I'd already made the mistake of thinking I could make cuts for decorative baseboards using the little kit sold at Home Depot (small yellow box thingy with angled cutting groves & a mini hacksaw)... if you've ever tried that thing, then you know what a colossal hassle it is!! I decided I would just start over, buy new, & have them cut! HD doesn't cut baseboards, so I called around & found Ashby would cut them for me. Came in about 3 hours before close on a Friday (note: there was an Open House scheduled Sat 2pm). The space that I was redoing was literally tiny, like 1 wall in the kitchen + the 2 walls & back of the fridge cubby. I spoke with a gentleman (Saul) who showed me what options they had in stock & I explained to him my project, mentioned the next day's Open House, showed him my toddler-quality art drawing which included clearly detailed measurements... I even explained HOW I measured, like from inside (along the wall) versus outside (the baseboard edges) so he was super clear on what I needed. He nodded his understanding, but mentioned to me that there's a standard way most baseboards are meaaured... okay? I couldn't exactly go back home to REmeasure so I explained again how Iiiii measured them; he said he understood & made some notes, he even attached my drawing to the work order :) I assumed HE would be making the cuts, but heard him explaining (in Spanish) to another guy. No problem-- or so I thought. All the cuts looked great, super clean edges, and the gentleman cutting my pieces even arranged them on my front seat using my drawing to show me how they fit together (in case I didn't know what I was doing). I thought that was nice. I got home & had other things to do-- mommy stuff... dinner, clean up, baby bath, baby early bedtime, teen late practice, etc... so I didn't get to my project until well after 11pm. I'm a nightowl so that's when I work best, hehe. Come to find out, EVERY SINGLE PIECE (except 1) was exactly 1/2 inch SHORT!! I mean SERIOUSLY??? Too long I could have trimmed to salvage in some way, but too short?? Dangit! 1/2 inch to the Teeee, so at least he was consistent, haha. Anyway, I ended up having to resort to the damn yellow box afterall :( it was tedious, time consuming, painful, & ridiculous considering I'd PAID to avoid this!! I finished installing around 2am, moved the fridge back in place, & finished cleaning the rest of the house in preparation for the Open House later that day. Not sure where the breakdown in communication occurred, but someone didn't get the memo about my measurements!! Thx for wasting my night, guys. I tried calling several times in the following weeks, but he was conveniently always "With a client" or "Out" or "Not working today" so I basically paid for useless product / cuts. read more

Definitely one of the better lumber yards in the bay area. The concord store has a very spacious layout with a huge selection of lumber. The yard guys are helpful and hustle to keep you from waiting in long lines. The " wait here for service " sign is clearly visible in a central location. Salesmen are courteous and professional and know the products they are selling, from application to quality.I have been doing business in the the area for several years now and I prefer this store because of the overall service, price and selection. read more

We have been using Ashby Lumber for over the past 25 years, during some of the toughest times for our business, they stood behind us. Their manager Dan, first opened our account and has always been someone who takes really good care of us. Our office and showroom was directly located across from Piedmont Lumber, and although they were closer and a good company, we preferred to use Ashby because of the relationship Dan built with us. It was well worth the drive across Concord to know that we were in good hands. Andy, in the window department has been great to work with over these past years. He is professional and respectful. His response time on quotes and returning phone calls is great, I don't have to call for status check-ups because he is always on the ball and keeps me in the loop with everything, which makes my job a lot easier. I called this place to get wood because I know they have better wood than home depot usually. Called ahead of time to make sure they had the wood because I was already in Berkeley but since I live closer to this location I figured I'd shop more local and gett it closer. Show up and they didn't even have what I wanted in stock when they said they did. Then they wanted it me to pay more money than what I was charged originally for them to cut some boards down the middle in half to give me the size they said they had already in stock. If you order or call them make sure they check 3 separate times that they have it in stock because sometimes twice is not enough. Wasted 2 hours switching trucks having my workers at the location to show up with nothing. read more

I am a first time home buyer so the whole process so far has been slightly overwhelming to say the least. I never thought about having to get a new front door, or everything that came along with it. I needed a custom window for our bathroom remodel. I started at Dolans. They told me I needed to fill out a form to get a quote and it would take a week. I called Ashby Lumber and spoke to Arlo. He asked all the questions needed and I had a quote within an hour. He also quoted me the shortest lead time which was 4 weeks. I contracted with Ashby immediately. I was ordering windows with a sales woman I had ordered before. After giving me a quote, she never again responded. I e-mailed, called and even stopped by (she was there was busy, but did see me). I bought a Simonton glass sliding door from Home Depot. Naively I thought it came with a keyed handle. It did not. Home Depot would not order the handle for me. Simonton (located nearby) does not engage in direct sales. I googled "authorized Simonton dealer" and Ashby Lumber came up. Arlo answered my email, asked smart questions to make sure he would order the correct keyed handle for my door, and efficiently placed the order and emailed me a copy. He responded positively to my request to have the keyed handle shipped to the Berkeley Ashby Lumber facility, which is near where I live. About a week later I picked up the handle and had it installed. Arlo provided excellent customer service, even calling the Berkeley facility to make sure the handle had arrived on schedule and that there was a person who would help me when I arrived to pick it up. read more

I have ordered front doors at Ashby Lumber - few thousands of dollars price tag. During installation installer noticed many defects and manufacturing issues that prevented doors to be installed (including asymmetrical doors frame). Since the installation was in progress and original doors were already removed, I have asked the installer to fix the issues as much as possible and install the doors anyway. This resulted in paying heavy extra money for the installation. I have of course immediately contacted Ashby Lumber explaining the situation and providing detailed photos of the reported issues. There was some email communication going on for some time with Ashby Lumber about this matter. I got to know that the doors manufacturer send some people to that Ashby Lumber to investigate the issue. NOBODY ever follow up with me even after I contacted them - radio silence, no even "I am sorry". This is a unbelievably non-professional approach, which speaks of culture at this store. It is very disappointing, especially since I talk about the product worth thousands of dollars. read more

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers. They have great selection of lumber and reasonable prices!!!! Service is excellent, the staff is hard working and knowledgable. They don't mind giving you advice on things, i've been doing carpentry for many years, but its still nice to get feedback from people. I would say the only negative is they are a little bit removed, more of an industrial area next to the freeway, but the parking is easy. I drove the whole way from San Francisco to look at interior doors. The salesman was not only NOT helpful...he was rude and condescending. Guess he only likes to deal with contractors, not homeowners. Gave me a quote for two double doors. I emailed the quote to my contractor and he was able to get the same, exact product at Dolan Lumber for $200.00 less. I own a 90 year old home and plan on replacing all the windows and many doors, but not at Ashby Lumber. read more
