Upon arriving everything was great up until the nail tech started digging her hard finger nail into my skin 3 different times & kept saying sorry. Then a couple of my nails still looked like they needed a fill she got mad about that. So when I told her about the cat eye design was not like the picture she disagreed, on top of that she left acrylic and white paint all around the lining of my nails. Oh and she really got mad when I told her two nails had dents into the polish. She slacked her lips and started talking in Chinese. It's way more but my point is that this was the worst experience I have ever had in a nail shop. I will never patronize nor recommend Ashby nails again read more

Came in for a full set of almond French nails. I love how they turned out! So pretty. A full set was $50, which is pretty standard. I'm taking off one star because I called ahead of time and they said to come in but I ended up waiting 40 minutes before they started on my nails. (They had one employee leave early that day due to an emergency). It's also a smaller salon so it's a little bit cramped inside. That being said, this is one of my favorite sets I've ever gotten :) read more

I have been getting my nails done for a while. So coming from Fresno ca I decided I wanted to get my nails done. Went here the service was ok not the best. So during my visit to SF and after I got my nails done I jammed my pinky nail and few days later my nail came off. A week later the rest of my nails came off to. The product they use is not good at all. My nails usually last more then 3 weeks usually. Spent $60 for a full set and not even a week all my nails broke off. This is ridiculous. Called the shop asking if they would take any walk ins for the day and my three friends and I went to get our nails done. One of my friends got a manicure for around $45. Me and my other friend got a full acrylic set for around $65. I loved the experience & set I got from here. I chose the polish that does a reflective color switch from the magnet once I saw that they had that type of polish available at the shop. Im not sure what my nail techs name was, I believe Caroline? but on her nail drill it's labeled as Dao. Not sure if she goes by only one name or the other. But she did a wonderful job at filing my nails and shaping them. I read some of the reviews before calling to check if they were available for walk-ins and some people stated that their nails were filed down too much or the acrylic broke off to early and or when it broke off it would take the natural nail under the acrylic with it. however my nails were already very thin from previously doing my own nails using gel x extensions and parts of my fingers were super sensitive and peeling due to the seasonal eczema breakouts I get on my hands. I told my nail technician beforehand before she started to prep my nail bed for the acrylic extensions that my nails were already thin from previous nails. She was super kind the entire interaction & gentle with my hands in this state (even without mentioning that my hands were also sensitive and fragile due to the eczema). I hope they last around 2-3 weeks at least! I got them a day ago so it's an early review but I've been to a lot of nail salons in the bay area & this one was by far a good experience, affordable pricing, and pretty nails. I LOVE MY DESIGN. I love the color choice. I especially love love love the shape of my nails as well. They are super sharp almond nails & my nail technician was efficient, gentle, and smooth while shaping my nails. She would press down on parts of my finger that might get caught or injured during the filing process so that she was only filing the nail itself. I didn't do a super crazy design like me and my friends usually would get but I love these nails more than the ones I've gotten from other shops who do more high end intricate designs. The pricing is great & I genuinely look forward to my next nail day. It's hard to find a shop that does nails for an affordable price (esp in this economy). My friends also liked their nails as well but the one who got the manicure realized she probably should've gotten an acrylic set since it was only a difference in around $20. My other friend who also got green nails from the same magnet shifting polish brand but in a different green color asked for square nails & later realized that a coffin shape would look nicer but these were all things said & reflected on after the experience at the shop. and we all thought this shop was a good one to return to especially now since we know the location, certain designs they're capable of, polish selection, and shop environment was very easy going & kind. read more

I found this place specifically for holographic nails. I ended up getting a pedicure and my eye brows done as well. The techs are gentle and take their craft seriously. I was really blown the service and the end results. Will definitely be back in the future! The place is small, so I would suggest leaving the kiddos at home. Got my nails done two weeks ago. I walked in and got a gel full set with chrome nails, at first the nails looked really good then a week later after washing dishes and changing my babies diapers the nails started chipping then two weeks later the nails started falling off to where you can see they hadn't put enough glue on the nails also other nails started lifting. I now have 4 nails missing which is ridiculous I called so that I could come and in and they could fix them which I feel like they should do for free and she said they would charge me which I feel like they shouldn't I spent $36 and two weeks later my nails are falling off this is unacceptable I won't be back there and that was money down the drain. This nail salon is in my South Berkeley 'hood so the location is very convenient. The prices are great too ($30 for mani/pedi). I've been going there a while now and the women are *finally* starting to warm up to me. The first few times I went there, all I got were stone cold stares and a brusque greeting. Now they sometimes smile a bit and the greeting is more welcoming. It's located right across from Ashby BART and the foot traffic seems to have a lot of meth-heads/alcoholics/homeless people. They leave a door open for ventilation so you hear people walking by arguing loudly - or have angry people on drugs walk into the shop screaming. I was very nervous because my car was parked right outside and I was hoping I wasn't gonna come out to a broken window. The customers can be characters too. They come from all walks of life. One girl was getting a Brazilian wax in the back room, and she was screaming bloody murder. I thought Dexter had her in his kill room. She was begging for the person working on her to stop and eventually came out with a tear streaked face. YIKES. But.... I digress. They do a GREAT job with my ragged cuticles and give fantastic arm and calf massages. I feel they do a very thorough job with my mani/pedis, though their nail color selections could be better. It seems to be decently clean too. And they have massage chairs that are soooo relaxing. Ahhhh.... All in all, it's a solid 4 star place. It's not luxurious by any means and the location is dicey, but I'll continue to be a regular. read more

Really didn't enjoy anything about this place.. I usually go 2 cities over to get my nails done, but since my usual place was all booked up w appointments and this place is in my neighborhood I finally caved in and gave it a try. Awful idea. The lady giving me a fill for my gel acrylic nails was superrr rough. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I left the salon missing a finger. She fu**ed up on one of my nails and made it bleed, which I was pissed about, then proceeded to dip it in acetone to still try to remove the polish. Unsanitary af!!! Not only did my finger physically hurt.. she never said sorry or acknowledged anything. I let her finish my fill and of course within the next 2 days 2 of my nails broke... this place is unsanitary & unprofessional. read more

They recently installed brand new massage chairs that are just HEAVENLY. I don't think I have been in a better spa chair as the rollers go all the way from head to lower back. It also has an incredible number of settings that allow you to adjust not just the style, but the chair itself. (You could probably lay down for your pedicure if you wanted) It reminds me of the massage chair in S.F.'s Japantown a little over a year ago that violated me by grabbing my butt when I sat in it. However Emily and her waxing skills are the best and at the best price in town. I started with regular lower leg and arm pit waxing and for over a year, she kept asking me if I wanted my eyebrows done. I don't have a unibrow, so I did not think it was necessary. I called earlier in the day on Sunday, 9/11, and scheduled an appointment for a full set and a pedicure. I arrive to my appointment about 5 minutes early, yet wait 25 minutes before they get started. My feet were soft after the pedicure, but the technician cut my toenails crooked, like at a 20 degree angle. This really sucked! I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to my appearance so I was losing my mind for a good 2 weeks waiting for my toenails to grow out. I normally get gel on my natural nails, but recently had bit all of my nails off due to a stressful summer. I opted for a full acrylic set to add some length to my poor tiny fingernails. The woman who did them should never touch anyone's hands. My cuticles were totally destroyed. She was super rough and caused a couple of my nails to bleed. Manicures should be relaxing, not painful and terrifying. Additionally, she left dried acrylic all over the skin around my nails. I mentioned this to her and she responded, "That's not acrylic, that's your dry skin." Ummmm no boo... I asked her for oil and began to rub the acrylic off my skin. There was so much! The nail painting job was sloppy. I'm confident I could have painted my nails neater after having my pupils dilated and lemon juice squirted in them. The moral of my review is don't go to this nail salon unless they start providing better quality services to their paying customers. read more

I absolutely love my nails it was worth the wait, I got them done yesterday, got there at 4:45 and didn't get seated til 5:45 (but there was 3 women working hard and 8 customers and I didn't make an appointment so I will not take points off for that) also it says here they close at 6 but really it's 7. I had only been here before for eyelash extensions (also really bomb) and eyebrows . The lady that did my nails was Kim, her and the other two ladies were so nice the whole time, they knew everyone there already except me and talk to them like friends. I come to this salon when I am having a bad week as it is in my neighborhood and close to BART--it is good to have someone else take care of you and just listen in on what the other customers might be discussing. No matter your background, education, race, or religion, for some reason there is something incredibly humbling about going to any sort of beauty shop that allows people to share across all lines. It could be that you have only half a weave in, or your shellac has been scraped back, or that others can see how gnarly your cuticles get after a few weeks--but it humanizes even the most posh. It reminds us we are all worthy of taking care of ourselves. The clientele here are priceless for their candor and sense of humor and their amazing life experience. We may not share all the same political views, but we are all lady enough to find common ground upon which to stand together. Anyhow, I digress, but that is one of the many thoughts that meander in and out of my head as I sit in my spa chair waiting for someone to finally get to me. I think the worst thing about this salon is the god-awful wait and the lack of the staff to keep their appointments properly. It's almost like walk-ins get priority at times. Emily is very nice and is awesome at doing nails, gels, etc, but I have to say the level of sanitation here is probably a bit shocking. I've seen emery boards being reused on other clients and that just completely squicked me out. If you can, bring in your own supplies--just for your peace of mind. I think if they got a website and an appointment booking system it would be a tremendously helpful change. I also wish their floors weren't carpeted since I shudder to think what is in there and when the last time it was that they'd steamed it. The place also suffers from the worst ventilation ever and it makes me worry for the staff. Aside from that, the prices here are the best in Berkeley. Nice ladies, just wish it was cleaner and less wait time. I'd pay more for cleaner facilities with wood/lam flooring and just to know that when I say I have a 4 pm appointment, that I actually will have a chair waiting for me when I get in. read more
