The waitstaff was friendly, but we ended up waiting over an hour for room temp fries and overpriced burgers. Bland poutine to start. One of the burgers was all onion bun and the other came with a cold Kaiser roll. The sea salt and rosemary fries would've been good if fresh or at least warm. The place was pretty packed, so a wait is understandable, but overall we were pretty disappointed in the quality of food for the price we paid. read more

Dre is the worst server I have ever interacted with. After bringing a group of friends to the bar for dinner and drinks, he disrespected two of my friends yelling at them for ordering at the bar and not at the table. He then told us that we had to order through him and not at the bar and that they have a process for a reason. I have never seen such hostility from a server to the point that he was yelling at us. We stayed to close our tab but this is a place no one should frequent if you believe in any level of customer service. read more

I'd give this place 5, but that would dilute the meaning of any future 5 star rating. Ashley's is one of the best beer bars I've stepped foot in. Many of the negative reviews focus on the service, and I agree to a certain extent. I've had both some of the best service and some of the worst service and it really is dependent on what server you get. I'd say that 90% of the time, service is great and 10% of the time, your server is buzzed/stoned and your service is what you'd expect. I dislike bad service as much as the next paying customer, but I don't frequent bars/restaurants with the objective of receiving impeccable service. Intangibles: The atmosphere is completely fantastic. Ashley's manages to simultaneously function as a hipster(ish) dive bar and a Harvard-esque multi-tap. I like the fact that Ashley's is a bit dirty because it shows that it's a place that exists as it does because of the culmination of years and years of people doing what I love to do at Ashley's - stumbling in late for one more beer than I need or lurching in for the hair of the dog the next day. I find it somehow satisfying that, when seated, I can look left and see a group of over-tattoed and pierced youths and then look right and see medical residents, a group of lawyers, or Michigan faculty downing pints. My fiance and I are about a year away from leaving Ann Arbor and this is the place we'll miss the most (we spent our 1st Valentines day there in 2008 and every one since). Drinks: I won't bother with the beer, because it speaks for itself. I'll just say that I've tried 90% of what's on tap over the last 4 years, and the selection is both eclectic and high quality. As for the other drinks . . . what other drinks? I find it disturbing when I see anyone at Ashley's with a glass of wine or a cocktail (cider is the exception for those that have gluten allergies). Why go to Ashley's if not for a delicious pint? I suppose indulging in one of their many numerous and very high-end scotches would be forgivable. Food: Ashley's features pub-grub. Think fries, burgers, greasy sandwiches, pizza, and the standard fair of appetizers. I'm not expecting a culinary experience or enlightenment at a place like Ashley's, and why on earth would I? I want Ashley's to be what it strives to be, and it succeeds at doing just that. The following, I would classify as my personal favorites: Cheese Steak Bacon, Cheddar, and Chive Fries (and all varieties of there waffle fries) Buffalo Wings Badger and Lineman Burgers (the only burgers I get here) Focaccia Club Cajun Chicken Sandwich BBQ Chicken and Pepperoni Pizza's My only complaint is that they no longer serve the waffle fries with their sandwiches and burgers. Ashley's is the best bar in town if you like beer. Their beer selection is great and rotates during the year. However, do not order a mixed drink at Ashley's. They just don't know how to make them, and I have not gotten a good mixed drink there yet. Their food is not bad either. It's bar food, but it's not bad. The food is reasonably priced, and it's alright pub food. The beer is expensive, but there's a lot of it. The service is hit or miss. Some of the staff is awesome, some not so much. However, after working in catering for 6 years, the music they play is so far beyond awful and played so loud that I can't go there anymore past lunch. Probably my favorite bar in Ann Arbor. Ashley's has a wide beer selection and attracts some of the more mature (grad students, young professionals, hip undergrads) crowd. A bit dive-bar-y, but not in that gross hole-in-the-wall way. I really like the atmosphere. Only downside is it can get pretty crowded. Ashley's has trivia on Mondays, which is pretty good, and some great shoestring fries. Make sure if you plan to go often, you start on Ashley's beer tour which rewards you with prizes for ordering different beers on the menu. I've been to Ashley's around a dozen times. It's in a great location, almost always packed, and has a great selection of beers. If you're a beer fan, and especially a draft beer fan, this place is for you. However, what caused me to write this review was the food I had on the last visit. I initially thought that "Thai Chicken Quesadilla" in a beer bar sounded like a fusion gone wrong, but it is fantastic. From the menu, it is: "a grilled flour tortilla stuffed with seasoned chicken, jack and cheddar cheese, green chiles and onions with a spicy peanut sauce. served with mango relish $8.99" It was so good it just became a must have the next several times I visit. Came here with a bunch of friends the other night it was a great experience! We ordered many different appetizers such as the pretzel sticks, spinach artichoke dip, and nachos. All were fantastic! I'm not a big drinker at all, but the booklet with all the beers helped me choose something I liked. The atmosphere is great, really relaxed and casual which is great to find in Ann Arbor sometimes. It can get crowded really quickly which means the service is a little slow, but I know that my friends were particularly annoying when we were there, so I can't blame them! I was excited to try this place out. My friends and I came here on a Saturday at 12:30AM and the first thing the hostess said to us was "were having last call right now." Not even a "hello" first. First of all, this place is supposed to close at 2AM (or later) to tell their customers they are closing at 12:30 on a Saturday is rather ridiculous. Their beer selection is pretty good and I enjoyed the Sierra rose sangria beer which they had on tap. A sweeter beer that tastes like sangria. I really wanted to try the poutine, but their kitchen was closed. Maybe if I try this again I will rate higher but to close early on a random Saturday seems to be odd. Update on review: i wrote that first review at about 12:35 as I was very angry. I am now updating it the next morning due to the fact that my phone died. At first I gave them two stars but now I am giving them one. The waitress let us order our beers and ensured us we would have "a long time to drink them." We received our beers around 12:50 (there were 5 of us total) and we began drinking. At 1AM the music was turned off and at 1:20, a man that I assume worked there shouted "BAR IS CLOSED EVERYBODY GET OUT." I was appalled to say the least. One of my friends had half of her beer still and instead of the waitress going around to each table telling them to finish up (which is still unprofessional) we got yelled at to leave the bar before we were even finished with our $7 beer. I was excited to come back to this place, but after last night I will never be back. I must add that I guess the reasoning behind them closing early was the snow, but the snow was barely coming down and we live in Michigan so a little snow is not an excuse to be rude to customers. I really wanted to like this place, but I was disappointed. I stopped in dining solo when I was in town for a conference. I was hoping to find a solid bar for a drink, with some "better than average" bar food. I'd been craving fish tacos & saw that they had good reviews. I sat at the bar and the bartender was less than inviting. That is one thing I always hope for when I sit at the bar, is to have a decent convo or at least some insight into things. The bartender barely made eye contact with me and I had to ask for drink menu (something I think should be automatic when you sit at the bar). He never asked if I had any questions- which I would have asked, as they have a pretty extensive beer list (over 20 on tap). I ended up getting a cider I had never heard of, and it was good. I also wanted to ask questions on the menu but had to ask the bartender to take my food order. I went with the fish tacos & upgrade my side to poutine (I've never had, but have always been intrigued). The bartender disappeared for a while and 2 other guys started stepping in to help other people that also sat solo at the bar. They seemed much more helpful & friendly. One of the "replacements" dropped off my food and it was lukewarm- which for fried fish taco- is never a good thing. Had they been fresh/hot, they would have most likely been better, but they were not crisp or warm. I also wish there was a little more sauce on them, but could've asked for more. The fries were interesting-good but rich. I could not finish them. Overall the food was "blah" and the service was less than spectacular. A different replacement bartender cashed me out and was really helpful in taking care of my complicated check (my work is particular with things). It was Monday night and they had Sporacle trivia, which I love, but got there late for the first round and was finishing up prior to the start of the second round. read more

It's overpriced for their menu and for being as expensive as they are, their bathrooms are always disgusting (at least the women's bathroom, anyway). Had a late dinner Monday night 8-1. My wife ordered a chicken tortilla wrap. The chicken looked old, the guacamole smelled a bit sour and the fries were cold. Our server Alaa (I think that's what it said on the receipt) was not Very attentive, we could actually see her sitting down and eating in the dining room a couple tables away from us. When we told her that we did not care for that wrap she mumbled something and took it away then brought the bill. Never saw a manger so we just paid and left. Up until tonight, I was a semi-regular customer at Ashley's. After the unacceptable way I was treated tonight, I will never return. Granted, the service at Ashley's has always been sub par. It was something I overlooked because of the bar's convenient location, wide selection of beers, and tastier than average "pub grub." However, after my waitress's behavior tonight I can no longer overlook the staff's poor attitude. My friends and I came to Ashley's for a Friday night happy hour. It was clear from the time we sat down that our waitress had an attitude. My friends and I had to flag her down to order drinks and, eventually, once we realized she wasn't coming back, food. We let this neglect slide as part of the "Ashley's ambiance" we know and do not love. However, things took a strange turn as soon as we started to finish our meals. Without prompting, the waitress brought our receipts to the table and asked if we were ready to cash out. We answered that we were not. We tried to tell her that we were waiting on some more friends who would come soon. She ignored us and placed the receipts on the table. We debated amongst ourselves whether we should pay then or not. I suggested that maybe we should pay while she was still paying attention to us. We thought maybe her shift was ending and we could order more drinks later (which we had intended to purchase if we hadn't been forced to cash out.) We reluctantly paid and it became immediately clear that we were no longer welcome. The waitress tried to take my friend's half drunk beer out of her hand and then childishly rolled her eyes when my friend told her that she wasn't finished yet. We were shocked and decided to stand our ground until my friend finished her drink. Our waitress sent the host over to guilt us into leaving. As he began to wipe down the table, he told us that a large party was coming and they needed our table. We were willing to be flexible and move to another table (there were several available) but no accommodation was made. Instead, we got dirty looks from our waitress every time she walked past our table. It was at this point we decided to leave and never return. Although I am usually a generous tipper, I wasn't persuaded to tip very much in the first place and now I'm sorry I tipped at all. Sadly, I know Ashley's will remain in business despite their deplorable service. Their excellent location alone assures that. Well, if it means anything at all, they now have 5 fewer customers. My friends and I immediately compiled a list of bars in Ann Arbor that we will patronize instead. Hopefully they will be more appreciative of our business. I'm mostly just depressed. It's sad to lose a place you used to look forward to going to. And it's maddening to have what could have been a fun and relaxing evening ruined by the people that you are paying to take care of you. I'm only giving two stars because of the wide selection of food and beverage. If you have a higher tolerance for rudeness, by all means, go ahead and enjoy the redeeming (edible) aspects of Ashley's. Ashley's is not like the Ashley's I knew several years ago. That Ashley left her place a mess and I did some awful things there. This Ashley's was much better. Ashley's was probably my best just bar experience where I didn't get any food, in Ann Arbor. They had a large selection of beers on tap, all at an inexpensive price. I went on and tried several brews, including some Michigan based ones. It was a pretty good crowd despite the fact if was getting late on a Thursday and it was no school in session. Given that we did have one creeper talking to us. This dude knew nothing, but kept talking about things like he did. First it was the beer I got versus the beer he got. I wasn't even talking to the guy and he starts questioning my beer choice as if his was a stronger beer. Two minutes later I showed on beer advocate what was up. Then he starts talking about football. Tell me this team did this. That team did that in their history. Once again. Completely wrong. He thought the Redskins only won one championship. I told him I'd bet him a beer he was wrong. We shake hands, showed him he was wrong but then refused to buy the beer. This must be some older dude who live off that college scene. Whether he's some creep who is trying to get with some girls or stay apart of that drinking scene, the guy was a total weirdo. In the end come through to Ashley's for some awesome brews, but stay clear of the creepazoids. read more

I really like Ashley's. It's because my roommates and I went there almost every weekend in college. It's because they have great food, great drinks, and absolute best beer selection in the city. It's because it's not full of stupid, crazy undergrads who want $2 pitchers but has lots of grad students & 20-somethings. It's because it's got the great feel of a chill pub, and cheap bar food. If you went to Pioneer High School or U of Michigan or both, you'll probably run into someone you know here on a Friday or Saturday night. Great local college town pub to grab a pint or a flight. They have the classic greasy dishes including fries with Stilton cheese. Our server was excellent and did a great job of making sure our drinks were always filled. For anyone that comes here with a boring date, there's a foosball table downstairs. Start playing a game, excuse yourself to the bathroom, and in no time, you'll be able to get lost and find another broad or hunk to take home. read more

I've never had a bad experience here. I've been here with small parties and large parties, and they're always very upfront about whether or not we'll get seated soon. This places gets packed Thurs-Sat night as you can expect, but it's well worth it. They most likely have the largest tap in Ann Arbor, and they always have plenty on rotation. The beer isn't cheap, but damn is it good. They also have some good relationships with local brewers, so they often have events where they have a larger selection of beer from one particular local micro-brewery. read more

I have been to Ashley's a few times during the day and every time it's been ok. This last time was horrid enough to say I'd never return. Here is my story....Walked in to be greeted, (oh wait you have to exchange words with a person to be greeted) and the guard dog grabbed my shoulder to check my ID. Perhaps if he used his words like an adult I would have gotten my ID out. Like I said, I had only been there during the day and never had my ID checked. So whatever, I get over that. I walk to the back with my friend to meet other people and they tell us that we have to find a seat and can't stand. So we walk back to the bar, grab a seat and a beer. We were there 5 mins and payed our bill. My friends tell us a table freed up, so we walk again to the back of the bar. We sat there for 2 mins and the bartender walks up to us with a very accusatory attitude and starts asking us if we have a problem with our service. We had no idea what he was talking about. He quickly informed us that we did not leave him a tip. My friend starts to apologize since we were so pre-occupied with finding a table, we forgot to leave a tip. He reaches to his wallet and the bartender says 'whatever man' and walks away. At this point two things are going through my head. 1. Who hired this guy and why does he think it's good customer service to ask why someone didn't leave a tip. 2. Screw him now for walking away. My friends were completely blind sided by this and I was too. After this no one wanted to try anymore of there "80 beers on tap." Who wants to receive crappy service for the rest of the night? Our server wasn't any better at the table, although he did mention the 18% gratuity included on the bill since we had a large group. He said he mentioned it because he knew we had a go-around with the bartender. The whole thing was unenjoyable and there was no presence of management of any sort. I gave it an "A-OK" because I come back here. If you know and enjoy great beer, you can't go wrong here. The rotating taps always are great--even if you know all beer, you can always experience something you have never tried before. I once had a beer called Bananas and Blow, that truly tasted like bananas (as far as the latter goes, my experiences discredit me). As Leanna G. said, don't come here if you are expecting to get drunk, the waitstaff don't allow it because they are so slow to respond to you that it will be impossible to do so. Beyond that, the food leaves little to be commended. Being a vegetarian, I enjoy eating somewhere that offers an herbivore selection which goes beyond a salad, soup, bean burger, and a veggie wrap. Here you can't find a salad that does not include a meat option, they do not offer a bean burger at all, but they do boast a vegetarian soup each day. The last few times I have eaten here I opted for the Georgia Reuben minus turkey, plus tomato (a customized go-to veggie option of mine), and each time the wait staff have given me an odd look before walking away--you're in Ann Arbor, what can you expect? On another note, I will preface this by saying I am fairly tolerant when it comes to a smokey environment. In fact, when it comes to a good bar/pub, I think this to be an important component. However, I find the smokiness to be a bit intolerable, even when I sit in the non-smoking section. If you are looking for a great beer, loud music, and a good flavor of emphysema...enjoy! read more

My experience with Ashley's was not great. Quite frankly the only reason they get three stars is because they had KBS on tap. We were told one wait time, ended up being double, then once we were sat it took an unreasonable amount of time for someone to take our order. One person wanted to get a flight, which they are known for, the server said the bartenders are doing flights. Why you may ask? Just because they said so. I'm not super gung-ho about Ashley's, but it's my favorite campus bar, which says something about campus bars. Or maybe me. The atmosphere is laid-back enough to be enjoyable for a variety of occasions, and I approve of the concept of a bajillion beers. As for the food, well, I've established elsewhere that I have an affinity for cheese fries and warm chocolate chip cookies, two things they do decently here. They have two species of cheese fries, in fact, both of which are good; the Stilton fries are a specialty, but a little intense, even for a blue cheese enthusiast. We sat outside last night and had the rudest server I've probably ever experienced at any restaurant. The thing is, I honestly don't think she realizes how rude and unprofessional she comes across. I'm going to assume Shaya was the server (name on receipt) who had a trainee with her (trainee, don't do what your server does - ever). My friend wanted an Irish Coffee with southern comfort and Shaya told her they "didn't have time for layering cream" in her coffee. They're just "too busy" to make that kind of drink here. She went on and on and by that time any drink could have been made. It was finally settled to bring the darn creamers on the side. I honestly can't imagine a server ever saying "we're too busy to do" whatever. The arrogance and dismissiveness is astounding. You do realize you're in the customer service industry, right? Maybe you *are* too busy to make frou frou drinks but there are 20 better ways to say it. "I'll bring creamers on the side so you can decide how much you would like" would probably be the best way to not offend your guest and not have to "layer" this apparently time consuming beverage. When we were ready to leave, she was walking by and we wanted to ask for the check. She replied, "just one table at a time". Really? Again, find a better way to say what you want to convey to a guest. I'm shocked my friends left any tip at all but I didn't. read more
