I was having a real craving for Hunan Dumplings and they had it at Ting's Kitchen ($8.95). I also got an order of General Tao Chicken ($10.95) for my husband, as it's one of his favourite dishes. Both dishes had some spicy heat to them. The Hunan Dumplings were in a thin peanut sauce and chili oil. I would have liked a slightly thicker peanut sauce and less chili oil, but I still really enjoyed it, and it wasn't too greasy/oily. The General Tao Chicken had onions, carrots, mushrooms and green peppers in it. It wasn't crispy, but still tasted good. The batter was not excessive and the meat was not gristley, so I was happy with this. The food overall I would rate 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4 because service was good and I like supporting small local businesses. I called in my order and went to pick it up. I had requested no sesame seeds and they obliged. The lady on the phone was courteous and efficient. She said it would be ready in 30 minutes. I got there in 30 minutes and it was waiting for me. Having had this many times other places; I was expecting thin, chewy noodles that have been fried until crispy on the outside, topped with assorted seafood, bbq pork slices and vegetable. What arrived in a tinfoil loaf pan was a solid gelatinous brick of thick, overcooked rubbery pasta encased in beef jelly. There were some canned-looking mushrooms, bok choy, and a few big under-cooked chunks of green pepper piled atop it. It unmolded from the container in a solid block and plopped out onto a plate with a jiggle and a horrible sucking, squelching sound similar to pulling a stuck rainboot out of deep mud. The whole experience was so surreal and weirdly obscene that I couldn't bring myself to try any. It was my birthday. My dear old dad had mailed me a card with fifty dollars inside to "treat myself" to a special dinner. What a sad, sad waste. Even the fortune cookie was stale.
