Asian Star Restaurant, a name that implies only "one star." Asian Star has three restaurants operating in Oklahoma: Wagoner, Pryor, and Tulsa. The one Wagoner has been a favorite of mine for several years. I was hoping the Tulsa restaurant would be as good. It was not. It was a disappointment. The restaurant is worn, the service is average, and the soy sauce bottles on the table had not been wiped clean or refilled since Mao Zedong was in power. Luckily, searching the other tables, I was able to find a fairly new sriracha bottle that didn't have sriracha boogers growing on the nozzle. The food was acceptable but, overall the dining experience and the food; overrated in some reviews. No reason to come back. So I tried this restaurant for the first time through delivery. Overall largely impressed. I had the steamed dumplings, Mongolian beef with fried rice, and wonton soup. Everything arrived hot or at least warm. So I'm pleased with that. I'll get the cons out of the way first. The Wonton soup had a very strong taste. It wasn't necessarily bad, just really different than I'm used to and not necessarily to my personal liking. I've had a lot of Wonton soup over the years because it's my favorite, so I was a little disappointed, but the Wontons themselves were still very delicious. Also, the fried rice was almost a little dry, which I'm not sure has ever happened to me with an Asian restaurant before. I wonder if maybe I just got a batch that was cooked too long or maybe was held a day or two. Considering the current economy, however, I think that's reasonable, so I'm not that upset about it. Pros. The steamed dumplings are incredible. I'd even say divine. Warm and super yummy. I've had asian dumplings from other places that were bland. That does not apply here. Also the Mongolian beef was very good. A good ratio of meat and veggies too. My one real general critique is that some of the packaging got a little squashed and the Wonton soup spilled a little. At least with the soup, if there's a carryout container out there that seals a little better it might be worth looking into. But yeah, overall I'm pretty happy with the food. I love this place. It is one of the only places in Tulsa you can get such a great variety of different Asian food. There is Thai, Chinese, Singapore, and much more. The rice noodles are my favorite thing to get, but there is sushi and a huge variety of traditional Asian food and some items you cannot get anywhere else. I'm literally an Asian, then I always eat steamed rice and a variety of chicken of my Asian culture. The chicken wasn't many flavors which my family and I usually cooked, but I think I understand others aren't the same as this because of a taste differences. Steamed rice? I smelled a horrible odor from steamed rice inside the box, then I know I can tell that rice is not good. I threw it away, and I was going to cook my own rice. My husband loves this place, however I don't care for it too much. I've tried the Singapore noodles, which were okay but had my stomach feeling off after eating them. I've also had the orange chicken, and either bad oil was used or it was too hot and burned the breading. Whichever it was, the chicken didn't taste good. I've also ordered the basil fried rice with beef but they gave me the Thai fried rice with shrimp. My experiences have just been very inconsistent, my husbands as well, however they are a reliable hole in the wall Asian eatery for him. We are always looking for great Chinese food and we just found it in South Tulsa. We received their menu in the mail and thought we would try, so this was our first visit. I had the 5-way combo plate, comes with two entrees (limited selection), choice of rice, choice of soup or egg roll and drink for $8.99. I chose Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef and asked for extra spicy. Both entrees were very fresh tasting with just the right amount of spicy. Fried rice was good, as was the Hot and Sour Soup (large bowl). My wife had Chicken Nam Sod salad that she really liked and the California Vegetable Roll, also very good. Setting is nice and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We will definitely put this one on our regular rotation. read more
