Chicken Caesar salad

I ordered a chicken Caesar salad from Aspen Bakery. As I was eating I saw something moving. There was a live bug in my salad.

Great bakery and lunch spot. Delicious sandwiches and salads. I ordered the Aspen which has a ton of turkey, avocado, and a slaw-esque mix of lettuce and red onions. It's on tasty cranberry bread. The sandwich is filling but the bread is smaller and thinner than what some might expect but it's packing a lot between the slices. Tuscany for the S.O. He said it was meh. Sandwiches came with a small potato salad that we both loved, and a pickle. We also got a Mirage salad which was delicious and I love that it includes chicken. The dressing came on the side and it's the perfect raspberry vinaigrette. It came with a slice of the cranberry bread, cut in half. Also got 2 cookies - ginger and oatmeal. The bread and pastries all look amazing. Surprisingly I didn't love the cookies as much as I hoped. Still good but not something I'd get again. Overall I really enjoyed the food here. Service is great - nice and friendly.

Menu

While the food at Aspen Mills Bakery & Cafe is tasty, I can no longer support this establishment in 2026 due to their use of an offensive slur on their menu. Specifically, their sandwich board features a "dark Squaw bread" on the Prime-Cut sandwich. The term used is a well-documented ethnic and sexual slur against Indigenous women that has been widely removed from public landmarks and brand names across the country. I personally notified management about this around Christmas time, hoping it was an oversight they would want to correct. Unfortunately, they have done nothing to remove the slur or update their signage. It is disappointing to see a local business continue to use derogatory language even after being informed of its harmful impact. Great sandwiches do not excuse the use of hateful terminology. Please show some integrity; Integrity-do what's right when no one is looking

Newporter Lunchbox Online
Marilyn A.

Aspen Mills is a lunchtime fave of mine! I like to order ahead of time save myself some time. The Newporter lunchbox includes the sandwich, a pickle, cookie, and potato salad all for a reasonable price. The only con is sometimes there is a long wait to order/pay for food because the customers like to play 21 questions with the cashiers about items already listed on the menu. It would be nice if someone can assist in checking out when the line is long.

Always and nice drop in, locals bakery kind of place. YELP SHORT ANSWER: Yes, not large, a few tables inside and limited outdoor seating but the bakery items are excellent. Location: lots of parking, seasonally a Cars and Coffee location which is fun. Menu: very limited but bran muffins are their thing and the drip coffee is pretty good. Quality: pretty okay, nothing super special other than very consistent here. Old School. Waitstaff: could be friendlier as owners if they don't know you but part of the charm I guess. Overall Value: good enough but not inexpensive. I've been here maybe 10 times nothing negative to say. TIP: Cars and Coffee seasonally on Saturday morning 7-9am + loose hours but fun!

Ask the Community - Aspen Mills Bakery

A friend turns 98 on Wed... 1. Can u deliver 2 dozen assorted cookies to Tamarack Road? 2. Is there a delivery charge? 3. Can you write a birthday shoutout on the cookies?

Thanks for reaching out. Sorry for the delay, we don’t check Yelp very often. We mostly likely can do this order. I would need the exact address. We don’t decorate the cookies, but we could put a card with the delivery. Please call us at (760)…

Are you ever going to reopen? Date keeps changing.

We’ll reopen - just keep running into setbacks outside of our control. Thanks for your concern. We’ll make sure to get the word out when we’re back up.

Can you get sandwiches at 8 or 9 in the morning?

Yes

Any dairy/soy free desserts or breads?

Sorry Hue M., I don't know but the staff is very helpful and friendly. Give them a call!

Gluten free options?

We have two gluten-free bread options: multi-grain and sourdough. We bake those every Thursday night and sell them Fridays and Saturdays. We keep a few extra loaves fresh-frozen to sell the rest of the week and to use for sandwiches. We also have…

Ordered the New York style hot pastrami on rye with coleslaw and a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda. The pastrami was the highlight. Piled high, tender, and full of that classic deli flavor with just the right amount of richness. The rye bread held everything together well and had a nice bite to it. It's the kind of sandwich you have to take a second to look at before figuring out how to eat it. The coleslaw was fresh and crisp, a good balance to the sandwich, and the cream soda was cold and refreshing. Also ordered a slice of pistachio cake to go. Absolutely delicious. The place has that old school deli feel, busy but in a good way, and full of character. Service was friendly and efficient even with the crowd. Definitely a spot worth stopping at if you're in Palm Desert and want a proper deli sandwich.

Service was excellent. Seated immediately and ordering minutes later. Got extra cream cheese on request and our coffees were diligently refilled. The main attraction was the pastrami sandwich. Totally to my wife's taste, extremely lean and stacked high. She had to take half home. I tried an omelette with corned beef and loved it. The everything bagel was perfectly acceptable, not too "bready." So: service good, pastrami good, and bagel good. Everything good about a deli is covered.

I especially enjoyed the #14 The House. It's a house-made chicken salad with nuts and cranberries and comes with sprouts, tomato, mayo, salt and pepper on Squaw Bread. The cranberries adds a mild sweetness which balances out the mayo and the nuts adds another layer of crunchy texture and flavor which I loved. If I were to be honest, I wasn't too crazy about their bread. On both sandwiches, it was soft which was good, yet at the same time, just a bit stale. While the sandwiches initially seemed loaded, most of the ingredients are right in the middle of the sandwich where they slice it in half, so while it's very visually appealing, there's basically a ring near the crust of the bread that didn't have much toppings. As far as the Love The Club sandwich. I think they are a bit heavy handed with the salt. The sandwich was too salty. At $33 for two sandwiches, it's also a tad bit pricey. Overall good experience and will be back to try more !

One downside was the server who took our order, forgot to put it in the computer which caused a 45 minute delay. Taking it in stride he immediately offered to comp the whole meal and drinks, taking the blame upon himself. Stand up guy! I offered to at least pay for the drinks and he wouldn't let me.
