We all look forward to being able to unrestrictedly dine out again.
When you need a break from cooking, this conveniently located, small Italian restaurant has always been our safest saviour. Oahu, may not have a good selection of Italian restaurants, & tonight, Assaggio (Mililani) may have eliminated my appetite for any Italian cuisine in Hawaii for a long while. They only have one or two decent servers & the oldest servers always seem to make you feel less worthy when you do not order alcoholic beverages. Thou shall not judge a customer by their drinks.
On a drizzly Tuesday night, around 6:20pm, too lazy to make dinner, we drove to Assaggio Mililani. I ordered my usual chicken saltimbocca and my husband's, chicken alfredo,a couple of house salad, & non-alcoholic beverages. We normally have to wait 15-30 min on any weeknight. Tonight, was surprisingly empty. The place was so empty, nobody greeted us at the front for another 10 min. There was an ipad with a QR code to scan, maybe to add our name on the list (we thought) but no further explanation, except, "scan code." Despite the fact that the place was only a quarter filled, we waited another 3 min before a hostess arrived. She was unwelcoming & did not greet us at all. She looked straight down behind the front desk, grabbed 3 menus, and went to peek into the main dining area to see which tables were open. I guess this place is so small, they do not need a system to keep track of which tables have been taken. We sat down, got handed a two sided laminated menu, which, during semi post covid times, was unsanitary. No QR code menus here. Did I mention, I was starving? My son, who just swam, was famished.
After 45 min, our food arrived. We had to ask for a 2nd bread since we were very hungry. I found the inattentive service to be lacking in genuine warmth, and overall felt obligatory and rushed. There was a lack of guidance as to how much longer we had to wait. Maybe the poor service exaggerated my annoyance towards this place. The server was surprisingly too loud for my comfort. It was a bit bothersome that she was barely two feet from me, especially, nowadays, most servers are conscientious of their proximity to customers. Better yet, a well trained server, would have been more forthcoming with the bread and drinks to compensate instead of us having to wave anyone for service.
The main course was delivered by the busser, working double duty as the runner, whose THUMB WAS IN the CHICKEN! I watched him drag his finger across the side of the plate to wipe the sauce. It was utterly disgusting! And it all seemed to happen in slow motion on a loop! I looked up and said, "your thumb was in my chicken." He chuckled, and asked if I wanted some cheese? I was a bit confused, and torn between wanting to cry from frustration and concern for my hungry child. I gave it a moment, to ensure my starvation was not causing delirium!
I had to be mindful of my 10 year old son, who was waiting patiently to share the pasta from my plate, and was also watching how an adult would handle the situation.... children, are so impressionable. I was torn, between getting my child the sustenance he needed, the question of sanitation, and the lesson I was about to teach. Do I make my child wait another 45 min for a replacement? The runner left & I waited 5 min for the server to check on us. Meanwhile, my son was trying hard to convince me it was OK to eat the "thumb dipped chicken."
The server arrived and was being told about the incident when she abruptly interrupted, "I will be right back." No acknowledgment, no apologies, no resolution. Another 5 min, she came back, listened to what transpired, and said she would be back again. Another five min, she grabbed the plate and said, "we will replace this for you." She never asked if I wanted it replaced, or wanted something else. She just took the plate away.
Miraculously, the replacement only took less than 15 minutes to bring out. It looked like a "chicken saltimbocca soup!" The chicken was swimming in watery liquid, that colour of fluid before the water from a raw chicken, the wine, broth, & butter have reduced. The sauce was not thick as usual because the chicken was half submerged in soup. The breaded chicken underneath was not even brown. I told her, I could not eat it. Did I mention Assaggio Mililani, during the week closes @8pm & it was past 7:30pm. The server in a matter of fact, unapologetic tone said that she could take it off the bill. By this time, I had to calmly hold myself back as I was more concerned with my hungry son. At this point, I was looking around for anyone resembling a manager/owner. It seemed like no one w/ authority running the place. He should have been informed about the incident.
The younger staff tonight was obviously a desperate attempt to retain sub par staff during times when no one wants to work Food service. read more
