The cool thing about Aster Hall is the options without being too overwhelming. Each restaurant has a few options each. You want ramen, there's 4 options. You want a burger, there's 5 options. You want sushi and a burger and a salad. You can do that. All orders, when ready, are texted "ready, come to window 4". You'll be picking up your order from each easily marked window. Just like at Starbucks, the condiments are all centrally located (napkins, tableware, ketchup, etc). I ordered a coffee, which was rich and smooth coffee, just the perfect start to my day. The space is gorgeous, with many seating options and a relaxing vibe. I am late to the game but so happy to have discovered this food and drink oasis spanning the 5th and 6th floors of the 900 North Michigan Shops. This review is specifically for the Bar and Study. If not for the collaboration with Volumes bookstore, an independent bookseller, located in the shopping center, I would not have known about this spot. I ventured here on a recent Friday evening for an author reading with Susanna Calkin and Laurie Rader Day. Since I was a little bit early, I made my way to the bar. The seating is generous and, at least on my visit, all covid protocols were being followed to a t. Happy hour takes place here from 4:30 pm- 6:30 pm daily. As of this writing, I am not sure if this space is open all days of the week, so it is definitely worth a call or checking the website. The happy hour menu features a selection of specially-priced cocktails and wine/beer along with bar snacks. My gimlet, made with gin, was refreshing and perfectly set the stage for a night of literary conversation. I found the space to be well planned overall, with couches/seating offset from the bar. This was where the Volumes event convened. There are also booths and small tables throughout. I've heard from many Chicagoans that the burgers at Au Cheval really are that good and are definitely worth the hype, but I still wasn't about to wait 2-3 hours at the flagship restaurant for one. Thankfully, Small Cheval exists, and there's one in the Aster Hall food court. I visited for lunch after taking in the 360 Chicago viewing deck in the John Hancock Center just around the corner. I really like that more upscale food courts are becoming trendy. This one had a bunch of different types of food to choose from, including tacos, sushi, ramen, pizza, and more. I knew I was going to have to try Small Cheval, though! You place your order at a touch screen kiosk and can pay via card, but if you want to pay with cash you can do so at the 3 Greens Market stand. Then head to the stand from which you ordered and your number will be called when your order is ready. I got a cheeseburger, golden fries, chocolate shake, and a fountain drink from Small Cheval and my total was around $23. The cheeseburger comes with dijonnaise, pickles, and onions and was SO GOOD. The meat is juicy and perfectly cooked, the cheese is melty and fabulous, the pickles nice and crisp, and the dijonnaise ties it all together. It's a great burger! The fries were pretty standard, but if you get the garlic aioli to dip them in they are instantly elevated. The chocolate shake was also pretty standard, but by that I just mean it's exactly what you want a chocolate shake to be. There is plenty of seating and I was able to grab a table by the big windows looking out to the John Hancock Center. There's another level upstairs with even more seating. This is a great place to take a break from shopping and grab a bite to eat! read more

As we were eating, she said "I have been looking for a hot dog like this for years, I just love it." I got the cheeseburger because this is what everyone talks about. It was good, a bit pricey at $10 but it is extra good if you get more aioli to put on it. Cleanliness: All the tables were very clean. I came here specifically for the Small Cheval burger and fries. Literally ... drive straight from the airport as soon as I got the Chicago. I was fully expecting a regular food court but couldn't believe how nice this was. The ordering process though the screens was quick and seamless, and we didn't wait long for our burgers. This is conceptually a great food hall! The main space offers kiosks to order from. Perfect for those days where you want limited human interaction. We ended up with sushi and a traditional chicago style dog. We ended up bringing them upstairs to the bar where I had the grapefruit mimosa and my boyfriend had a beer, can't remember which one. We really enjoyed the experience, a quick bite but the ability to sit down and enjoy a drink with a beautiful setting. Ended the experience with a brownie from the dessert bar and honestly, it's not something worth missing. This is one of my favorite spots to work! Located in the shops at 900 Michigan, Aster Hall is a food court on the 5th floor. There are kiosks where you can order from a handful of restaurant options and then you go to your designated window to pick up. My favorite thing to order are the Al Pastor and Corn tacos from Al Pastor Tacos. The street corn is like Elote and the al pastor tacos are amazing quality. I would definitely recommend setting up shop before the lunch rush, as the place can fill up quickly. There are some nice, comfortable booths next to outlets, and a good coffee shop as well. I went here out of curiosity as I read good things about it and I was in the area (hungry - lunch time). Not until I got to the Bloomingdales building that I knew that this food hall was in that building. Initially, I was under the impression that it was in the Hancock building. This food hall is located in the 900 N. Michigan shopping mall. As you go inside the building there is a signage that directs you to the floor where this food hall is located. You can take the express elevator to the fifth floor or take the scenic route through the escalators. Once I got to the food hall area, I saw how spacious and nicely set-up the area was. It was divided into two sides with the featured restaurant vendors spread out between the two sides. The food ordering is set-up via kiosks only. You go up to the kiosks, browse through the restaurants and their menu options and place the order there by making the payment. Your receipt has the order number. I received good service at the kiosk for ordering help with one of the employees of the food hall. Then, based on where you ordered from you go to the counter of that restaurant(s) to pick up your food. There are t.v. monitors by the different restaurant vendors' counters to show your order number and its progress. Your order number is called when the food is ready. I ordered a pomodoro pasta dish from Lil' Boots and Nashville Hot fried chicken from The Rotisserie. The pasta dish was quite tasty and delicious. It was on money in terms of price and portion for me as far as lunch is concerned. The chicken on the other hand which I expected to be better between the two dishes was disappointing and average at best. The chicken was oily. It had a good crunch on the outside and moist on the inside but its seasoning lacked a good flavor. And for Nashville Hot, it wasn't quite at the level it should be at. Overall, the set-up and the decor of the place are nice and inviting. There's a decent amount sitting area too. The prices are not bad. I was expecting them to be expensive but I got a bang for my buck. I gave it four stars for its set-up, restaurant options, menu pricing and the ease of ordering. For the best cacio e Pepe go to the food hall area in the mall of 900 N Micigan Avenue. Located in level 5 and 6 it's called Aster Hall. We had the cacio e Pepe from Lil' Boots.. it's just the best. I mean I have not had this good cacio e Pepe outside of Chicago (lived in Houston after and currently living in Kentucky).. the plant burger in Small Cheval is also amazing. The Lost Lily's Giozas (veggie dumplings) is so delicious that my husband bought another plate of it. Came here for the first time on a Sunday during lunch time. This was the only eating option now available in the 900 building It is located across two separate floors however most of the food is on the fifth floor and there's additional seating on the sixth floor. There are a handful of restaurants and options as well as a bakery front. All orders are done through a computer kiosk and paid there while you go and stand and wait to pick up your food on a tray. The food choices are not bad but limited the food is cooked fresh which is tasty and hot and to be expected due to location prices are high. The decor and ambience is retro modern and photographs well and the seats are comfortable. I would come back if I had to however there are so many options nearby and around and outside the building that this would be a last option. read more

My first impression with "Aster Hall" was: boogie, but I like it a lot! I have been aware of the presence this new, high-end food court for awhile because it's located in a touristy, heavy foot traffic area of downtown Chicago. Hubby and I visited here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. I used to work at a retail store inside the Water Tower Place across the road a few years ago, but nowadays I don't head this direction much. The ordering process is done entirely through a machine. This allows the business to cut down a significant amount of labor hours and gave guests thorough explanations on the contents of each menu item. For those who have food allergies, you will be able to customize what goes into your order so that you can continue living without spending time and energy on paying the hospital bills, or at least can eliminate the possiblity of being uncomfortable for the rest of your day. We know the ambiance, seating, and even amenities are nice and elegant here in "Aster Hall," yet how about the food? Hubby and I had the hot chicken sandwiches from "The Rotisserie." I wish the chicken itself was a bit hotter, or I should say, spicier. Nevetheless, it was quite delicious and I had no complaint. I also thought the sandwich itself could use an additional pickle or two to be proportionate to the size of sandwich. The coleslaw was refreshing and complemented well with the hot chicken sandwich. I guess I could really go on about the pricing. Well, there are no servers hovering around you and asking for tips. Moreover, one can chill, relax, and get work done because power outlets are plenty. In other words, I expect to pay $10+ for an entree in this part of town and I shouldn't be surprised at all. I also did a solo trip here during Monday lunch after my work training. The "miso broth ramen" from Ginza Ramen was delightful. For $12.99 (as of 06/03/19), it had two (2) pieces of pork belly (nice and melting in the mouth easy), a soft-boiled egg cut in half, seaweeds, scallions, bean sprouts, and bold-flavored miso-based broth. To be honest, it was better than what some ramen shops in other Chicago hipster neighborhoods served. I think there's a cocktail lounge above the main food court. I no longer drink, and therefore, can't provide a comprehensive review on that portion of venue. I believe "Aster Hall" will be my go-to lunch or dinner spot whenever I'm poking around downtown Chicago. I love this food hall! A great addition to Michigan ave. I like that it brought restaurants that are unique and aren't located directly downtown. Small Cheval is pretty popular, but don't kid yourself, the burger is not as good as Au Cheval. The kids burger is not very good at all so don't try to reduce it by a patty or you'll regret it. Definitely leave the kids burger for the young kids who won't notice. The milkshakes here are pretty good! There is also a Chinese restaurant, fried chicken restaurant, Mexican restaurant, to name a few. You order on a screen outside of the hall and pick up your food from the different restaurants. It's great because you place one order but can try many different restaurants, you just have to grab your food from each of their booths. I like that it is in an upscale mall. It smells like the spa when you enter the mall. This must be what it feels like to be rich! Upstairs from where you order there is plenty of seating with various sized tables. I wish more of the restaurants were open that were shown on the website. Since I went in the later part of the afternoon, I had to place my order at the Chocolate Bar, which is in the middle of the hall. The order taker was very pleasant when he took my order for Small Cheval restaurant. I've been at another Au Cheval restaurant, so I know how great the food is. I had ordered the Cheeseburger with a side order of fries. Then I was told to have a seat. Few minutes later, the food runner brought my food. Of course, the meal was delicious. The food hall was certainly following the Covid guidelines. I really don't know if I would return. read more

This is hands down my favorite food court/hall I have been to. I loved how clean and spacious the area was. When we first arrived on the 5th floor, I was wondering why everyone went straight to the kiosks. I liked being able to browse through each restaurant to decide what to eat. Once we submitted our order and made the payment, we received a receipt with an order number. On the receipt, it tells you which vault to pick up your food. You can look at the TV monitors by the different restaurant vaults to see the progress of your order. In each of the vault areas you could get your drinks and delicious condiments. They had Ranch, Garlic Aioli, Yellow Mustard, Ketchup and Sriracha! I mixed the Garlic Aioli with some sriracha and it was soooo good! Just outside of the vault area was a little hand-washing station! Now for the food! We ordered: Boardwalk Seafood Company: Lobster mac and cheese; The Rotisserie: Nashville Hot fried chicken, Truffle Parmesan Waffle Fries and Small Cheval: Cheeseburger, Kid's burger. We had a big group with us and everyone LOVED the Lobster mac & cheese, Nashville Hot fried chicken and Truffle Parmesan Waffle Fries. The lobster mac had a good amount of lobster and so much delicious cheesy flavor. Nashville chicken could use more spice but had great flavor. It was fried perfectly too. The Truffle Parmesan Waffle Fries were amazing! Definitely my favorite truffle fries! Happened to being doing some shopping on Michigan Ave and was a bit hungry so I decided to check Aster Hall out. It's located on the 5th floor of the 900 North Michigan shops. All I can say is that it is probably one of the most upscale/stunning food court I've ever been too. From the marble floors & tables to gold trimmings, it just screams posh. There are some well-known food vendors like Small Cheval and Green Street Smoked Meats as well as some newer businesses. How it works is you order and pay at the kiosk then you take your receipt to the "vault" you ordered your food from & pick it up. I got an almond turmeric latte from Midnight Juice & Coffee Company and a cheeseburger & fries from Small Cheval. The atmosphere is very open and airy. There's vast amount of seating and have a little hand washing station too, which is a nice touch. There is also bar & study area located on the 6th floor. I love Aster Hall! It's hands down the most well-designed food court I've ever seen. You get to browse, order, and pay via iPad, which makes it an introvert's dream :) Several vendors are available including ramen, tacos, hotdogs, salads, and fresh juices. I imagine this to be how food courts will operate in the future. There's also a nice bakery with sweet treats as well. Pro tip: go to the top floor! One floor above the food pick-up is an INCREDIBLE seating area surrounding a bar. You can bring up your food tray, study, read, or relax amongst gorgeous contemporary chairs and golden light fixtures. AND there's a view of the lake! I'm always in awe at how it's free to chill there. You gotta check it out! read more

Aster Hall is still in the early phase of growing into this space in all aspects. They have nailed the ambiance, the use of technology, and the food offerings, however, the food itself comes up short. For instance, the Small Cheval hamburgers are good but the pulled pork sandwich, pasta, chocolate cupcakes, donuts, and cookies were not. If they haven't impressed with the basic food items I mentioned above, I am not confident they'll be consistent with the rest, at least for now. In short, the ambiance doesn't quite match the quality of the food offerings at this stage. However, the accessibility of the food court is fantastic with the bar upstairs, which is open an hour later than the mall's closing. It provides an easy way to grab a drink off of Michigan Avenue without the crowds, wait, and hustle and bustle. The seating and views of the lake are worth trekking in 900 N. Michigan to the 6th floor to grab a drink or cocktail. It is a no frills kind of place but with small frills in terms of seating and lounge areas. Beware with so many people milling around, especially on the weekend replete with strollers and kids, I can tell they have much room to improve to keep this place clean. It isn't clear how people are to dispose of their meal after eating so it's possible you'll grab a spot to sit down that's not clean. read more

I came here with my mom and a friend last Saturday in the late afternoon. It was busy but luckily we were able to get a table after a few minutes of waiting. My friend and I ordered from Ginza Ramen while my mom ordered from Tallboy Taco. It was our first time trying these places and it did not disappoint. The Miso ramen was a good portion for $13 and the pork melted in my mouth. The noodles and soft boiled egg had a nice texture and consistency. My friend liked her Shoyu Ramen as well. My mom stated both her Al Pastor and Barbacoa tacos were good but she liked the Al Pastor more. We later ordered Parm truffle fries because we loved it so much the first time! Paired with the garlic aioli sauce, it is a dream..you can make a reality! Since we had time to kill, we went upstairs to the lounge. It's one of my favorite places to be. The luxe couches and chairs are comfortable and inviting. We were able to stay for a few hours without anyone rushing us to leave, despite it getting busier. We ordered the almond turmeric chai and regular chai lattes and a matcha Arnold Palmer. All beautifully presented with a great taste. I am definitely getting the matcha drink next time. Some things that could be fixed are the kiosks- they are too slow. You have to press buttons multiple times before it reads it. And if there are soup spoons that could be given to use, that would be a big help! I couldn't finish all of my ramen broth because it was a hassle with a regular spoon. Aster Hall is basically an upscale food court on the 5th floor of the 900 North Michigan Shops. It's very beautifully designed, and houses some pretty fantastic food vendors like Green Street, Small Cheval, 3 Greens Market... you get the point. First thing you do is use a kiosk to place your order. The drawback here is what I would consider to be limited options but they did allow some customization for things like food allergies. This is a two sided coin because the less customization offered, the faster they can get the food out. And wow was mine fast! It took me a minute to figure out where to pick it up from but everything else was seamless. Since I was craving barbecue, I went with Green Street Smoked Meats. I was a little disappointed they only offered sandwiches but was able to request the pulled pork with no bun and add a side of baked beans. I was also pleased to find it came with coleslaw, especially considering Aster Hall is a little pricier than your average food court. But I enjoyed my meal and would definitely return for a quick bite if I'm in the area again. read more

Manager contacted me about my review below with my weird story and asked me to stop by again and offered me a free lunch, which I took her up on. It's easy to be bribed by free lunch! But I up-starred my review because of the interaction with staff I had on the second visit. I wasn't sure where to go and asked nearby named-tagged person for the manager and she immediately was warm and helpful, told me where to sit, and went off to figure it out. Never met the manager, but staff walked me through getting my meal, and I enjoyed another great lunch with a good view. Signs haven't been updated on where or how to pickup an online order (or, as far as I can tell, the online ordering process), and so I still think they need to consider someone ordering with their phone as just a primary an order path as using the touchscreen. But the end product is still nice, and I'm sure I'll be back again or use this as a spot to bring by friends who are nearby doing a little tourist bit. Enjoy! read more

This is for Bar and Study located at 6th floor- the location and ambience are great but service is horrible. Asked for water today and the bartender almost shouted saying "Water is right there"- pointing to a water fountain. I asked I needed cold water and he rolled his eyes.
