Ricotta Cheesecake with Caramel Sauceand Butterscotch Budino
Kate N.

Was immediately impressed with the appetizers! As part of restaurant week you're given the meatballs, Caesar salad, and fresh bread to start off. The meatballs were a perfect portion for 2 and I absolutely loved the sauce (which, ended up coming in handy when the main course was... lackluster). The Caesar Salad was fresh and exactly what you'd want from a classic Caesar, and the fresh bread was addictive! Loved the garlic, oil, and balsamic dish it was accompanied with. Main course was a little sad compared to how great the appetizers were. Wasn't able to grab a photo in time before someone tried it, but the Chicken Mario was essentially flavorless. It was apparently cooked with a brown butter glaze, but without knowing that you would assume it was just salt and pepper. That being said- it was well cooked and not dry, so it was saved by accompanying it with some of the apps. The braised short rib was a classic- nothing especially good or bad to say about it, but if you like short rib this is definitely the better option between the two mains we had. If you're going to get dessert, skip the cheesecake and get the Butterscotch Budino. At first I was a little jaded over the tiny sliver of cheesecake they served- but I ended up being glad we didn't get a bigger slice. I love cheesecake, but the cheesecake itself was not something I'd go in for a second bite on, and whatever caramel sauce they put on it tasted like burnt salt. Could've been an off night and they burnt the caramel, but given the cheesecake itself also being subpar at best, I would say skip. Thankfully the butterscotch Budino saved the day! Despite a bit of a harsh take on the cheesecake, I truly loved the Budino. Super buttery texture, a very unique offering to what most restaurants have going on, and packed with flavor. My friend who doesn't even like butterscotch like this! Upon arrival the atmosphere and decor feels very similar to a lot of the classic Italian spots in Chicago. Not a bad thing, definitely still cozy and perfect for a weekday date. Service was good and the meal came very fast- honestly a little fast because we were still working on our apps, but no worries there. Enjoyed the environment and thought the noise level in the restaurant was perfect for some conversation without having to shout or whisper. If it weren't for the Chicken Mario and cheesecake, this meal would've been a 10/10, so avoid those two dishes and you will probably have an even better experience than I did!

Caprese

My son and I arrived from airport and train and Uber and He was hungry. He ordered penne pasta and I ordered caprese sandwich. He also ordered $3.95 pop. Total was $49 ish including a stupid $1.50 fee. I was bummed when he said Gordon Ramsay Burger was across the street after we ordered. There was no side with the sandwich only red peppers or pimentos which i didn't eat. I gave my son half of my sandwich and he used it to soak up some sauce. Not the greatest value.

Seafood Stew

First time at Osteria Via Stato and we had a wonderful experience. It's such a beautiful restaurant with warm cozy Italian vibes. We had a big group and everyone enjoyed dining at Osteria. The menu has a nice variety and we tried a bunch of the items. We started with the garlic bread, calamari and their famous thin crust pizzas. Each of them was a 10/10. For the main course we had the seafood stew, three different kinds of pasta. For the sides we got spinach and potato fingerlings. The food was absolutely delicious. Everything was freshly prepared and was bursting in flavors. Our server was great and conscious of our dietary restrictions. He made great recommendations. We were so full with the best meal that we had no room for dessert. We need to go back again and this time I need to save room for desserts. Highly recommend this place.

Had a reservation and was seated quickly. We were seated in a room off to the back that looks like it might be typically used for private parties. We ordered the seasonal pizza as an app. It has grapes, Gorgonzola, and prosciutto. It was very thin, crispy and light. Then we all ordered a pasta dish, and to our surprise it was ready maybe 6 minutes after we ordered. Every thing was very good and filling. Only downside is it's attached to a hotel, and the bathrooms are on the second floor of the hotel. They appeared to have a single restroom in the restaurant but was always locked.

Mushroom & Sweet Onion

Mushroom pizza was a hit! Absolutely delicious. The Cacio e Pepe was also really good, buttery and rich, how it should be! We also had the lentil and goat cheese Al forno which was unexpected but did not disappoint. The tiramisu is of course a must! The service was excellent, our server gave us great recommendations was very attentive and kind. All in all was a great experience will definitely return!!

Host was so sweet and welcoming at the door!Great spot for happy hour. 1/2 off pizza and select wine. Pizza had a nice thin crust. Loved the atmosphere and Graciana was such a wonderful server to me! She made my individual dining experience feel so special! I will definitely be back.

One of my favorite pasta restaurants in Chicago. I always go for the shrimp pasta with the olive oil and garlic sauce and it never misses. I also tried the meatball for the first time and it was not bad.

Short ribs

A great restaurant week meal! We were seated right away for our reservation and ordered the RW special-- 3 courses for a great price. Fresh warm bread with garlic olive oil was tough to stop eating to leave room. The first course was so tasty-- soup and meatballs. Our entrees were just as good-- savory short ribs, mushroom pasta, and salmon with potatoes and perfectly crisp bacon bits. For dessert, the panna cotta was good and the ricotta cheesecake was great. With a nice bottle of wine, this was a wonderful dinner out.

We came in for dinner on a Friday night, and despite there being a wedding welcome dinner at the restaurant we were able to get a reservation and received good service. The drinks we ordered were okay- initially I ordered a Manhattan and it came out clear instead of brown, so I ordered a different drink that was prepared correctly after. The salad we got was really tasty, and the pizzas were creative in terms of toppings. Overall nothing life changing, but it was a solid meal with good service and reasonable prices.

Ambience
Isha T.

I loved the place and food. We went on weekdays around 8:20pm. Took 20-25 mins to be seated. The restaurant closes kitchen at 9pm. So, we went through menu while in waiting and finalized the food. Ambience is good. Service was good. We ordered Margarita Pizaa, garlic parmeson bread, seafood stew, orange mule. Pizza was okay. Seafood food had no to less salt, after adding salt it tasted good. Orange mule was as per my taste. GARLIC PARMESON bread was tasty Gelato ice cream waa very yummy. I got Vanilla + choco chip one. Servers are very professional. Good for dates, formal dinners and good to visit with family as well. Our total bill was around $86 ( excluding tip) I hope the review is helpful.

The bartender was sooo sweet, very attentive and quick, and made sure my soda was always topped off. I loved the vibe and the moody lighting! The menu is definitely River North prices -- nothing terribly surprising bht on par for the neighborhood. At the time of our visit, cocktails were $15+ and the fry basket was $10. Again, not terrible but definitely paying to be in River North. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely worth it!

This is not the place for a quiet conversation. It may be one of the loudest restaurants I've visited in quite some time, and a nearby birthday celebration only added to the energy. That said, the atmosphere is part of the appeal. If you're looking for a fun, celebratory evening with friends or family, Gilt Bar delivers. I can't imagine choosing it for a business dinner. We started with the Tenderloin Steak Tartare and onion rings. Both were excellent. My daughter was craving the Bolognese, while I ordered the vodka rigatoni. The portions were generous, and both dishes were flavorful and satisfying. The truffle mafaldine appears to be the menu's most celebrated pasta and receives plenty of attention on Yelp, but we were very happy with our selections. Service was spot on throughout the evening. Food arrived with good pacing, drinks were refreshed promptly, and our server struck the right balance between attentive and intrusive. For dessert, we shared the gooey skillet cookie. Be warned: this thing arrives at the table with nuclear-level heat. The vanilla ice cream isn't just there for flavor, it's there for protection. One unusual observation: the floors seemed surprisingly slippery throughout the restaurant, something we noticed more than once. Our bill came to $159 before tip, which felt reasonable given the quality of the food, service, and overall experience. Between the lively atmosphere, strong food, excellent service, and vibrant bar scene, it's easy to understand why Gilt Bar has remained popular for more than 15 years

They passed the appetizers, but once they passed them around a few times they put them on the bar which became one big grazing station. We ordered a flight of whiskey sours, which contained whiskeys from Japan, Vietnam, and Wisconsin. I also was able to order an amaretto sour, which they made with freshly hand beaten egg whites, which was a nice cherry on the top. As far as the whiskey flights go, I think the best one was the Vietnam flight because it had a slightly lemongrass twang and was a little bit lighter than the other two. The heaviest one was the Wisconsin which came with a little bit of a bite at the end, but it still wasn't bad if you're trying to blackout on a $15 budget. I would definitely come back with a larger group this seems like a great place, but is a little bit loud- so if you be prepared to yell or wear earplugs. The bathroom took my a second to find, which should have been intuitive considering it was on the opposite end of where you come in. I blame the lighting as things are already pretty hard to find in the dark, but eventually I made it there-Pat myself on the back.

We order it every single time and would probably be disappointed if we didn't. The real star of the show, though, is the lasagna. Between the two of us, we've had lasagna at countless restaurants, and nothing has come close to this one. It's hands down the best lasagna we've ever had. Perfect layers, incredible flavor, and the kind of comfort food that makes you want to savor every bite. Their Grey Goose espresso martini is also unmatched. We've tried espresso martinis all over Chicago, and this one is still our favorite. It's smooth, perfectly balanced, and the ideal way to start or end the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the While Garlic Loaf Focaccia and the Stuffed mushrooms. I wished I took a video when the focaccia arrived. The waiter, holding a plate with a round and fluffy focaccia and proceeded to pour the garlic et al on top of the bread! Very freshly-made and fabulous! The stuffed mushrooms were also cute delicious! This is a rare time where the stuffing had spinach below the stuffing - excellent! I remember seeing (and enjoying) this while I visited Italy. Delightful! The main courses we ordered were the Gnocchi Bolognese, the Baked Burrata Lasagna and the Barolo Braised Short Rib. The Gnocchi meat sauce was the standout here, being very flavorful, but not as heavy as some other restaurants. The Gnocchi were dense - not fluffy as I had expected. But the sauce flavor was vivid. The Baked Burrata Lasagna was oh, so perfect! Many layers of al dente pasta separates with a tasty meat sauce. Many times I have had lasagna that was either over-baked, or had limp pasta. Here, the lasagna shined! So large of a serving that my wife could not finish it, much to her dismay . . . I had the Barolo Braised Short Rib - oh my living god! - so tender, so complete a dish, with the fork tender meat that melts in your mouth, complimented by a light polenta (I must emphasize the lightness here, as many restaurants serve polenta that is heavy and too rich. This did not compete with the short rib, rather it seamlessly became the foundation on which the richness of the meat was enhanced. I was blown away! But, the most amazing, and probably the most delectable part of the evening was finishing off with a luscious Chocolate Cake! OH, WOW!!! The cake was certainly moist and smooth. Yes, smooth! I could not tell there was cake at all, so smooth it was! And surprisingly (not surprising given the quality of this establishment) it wasn't too sweet, rather just enough to bring out the chocolatey goodness! I only wished that I ordered some hot coffee - the cake would have gone well with a great cup of coffee! Overall, I was very impressed with this restaurant! The old-town decor, the dim lights, the fantastic food (just like of the Italy of old!)- all contributing to a wonderful experience! Highly recommended!
