I had a delicious lunch with a friend today- celebrating her birthday. It was not too busy at lunchtime and the servers were quite attentive to our table. The inside has dim lighting and a quiet but classic Italian ambiance. We had the mushroom and onion pizza, which was paper-thin and outstanding. We also ordered a mushroom pasta which came in a generous portion. The arugula salad with dates was simple and flavorful. They even gave us a free choice of dessert to celebrate my friend's birthday- we chose gelato. I would definitely come back! read more

Was immediately impressed with the appetizers! As part of restaurant week you're given the meatballs, Caesar salad, and fresh bread to start off. The meatballs were a perfect portion for 2 and I absolutely loved the sauce (which, ended up coming in handy when the main course was... lackluster). The Caesar Salad was fresh and exactly what you'd want from a classic Caesar, and the fresh bread was addictive! Loved the garlic, oil, and balsamic dish it was accompanied with. Main course was a little sad compared to how great the appetizers were. Wasn't able to grab a photo in time before someone tried it, but the Chicken Mario was essentially flavorless. It was apparently cooked with a brown butter glaze, but without knowing that you would assume it was just salt and pepper. That being said- it was well cooked and not dry, so it was saved by accompanying it with some of the apps. The braised short rib was a classic- nothing especially good or bad to say about it, but if you like short rib this is definitely the better option between the two mains we had. If you're going to get dessert, skip the cheesecake and get the Butterscotch Budino. At first I was a little jaded over the tiny sliver of cheesecake they served- but I ended up being glad we didn't get a bigger slice. I love cheesecake, but the cheesecake itself was not something I'd go in for a second bite on, and whatever caramel sauce they put on it tasted like burnt salt. Could've been an off night and they burnt the caramel, but given the cheesecake itself also being subpar at best, I would say skip. Thankfully the butterscotch Budino saved the day! Despite a bit of a harsh take on the cheesecake, I truly loved the Budino. Super buttery texture, a very unique offering to what most restaurants have going on, and packed with flavor. My friend who doesn't even like butterscotch like this! Upon arrival the atmosphere and decor feels very similar to a lot of the classic Italian spots in Chicago. Not a bad thing, definitely still cozy and perfect for a weekday date. Service was good and the meal came very fast- honestly a little fast because we were still working on our apps, but no worries there. Enjoyed the environment and thought the noise level in the restaurant was perfect for some conversation without having to shout or whisper. If it weren't for the Chicken Mario and cheesecake, this meal would've been a 10/10, so avoid those two dishes and you will probably have an even better experience than I did! read more

Osteria via Stato is literally just fine. First the vibes feels very hotel lobby -- which I guess makes sense because you're literally in the same building as a hotel. The waiter called the menu "small" which I don't think is necessarily true and they focus on what they have or some BS. It's literally an average sized menu. Our waiter was very friendly but maybe perhaps doing a smidge too much. We had a special which was whipped ricotta (?), honey, and bread. It was good but I could have made it at home for less. We also had a pizza. I was impressed by the pizza but I also wouldn't ever go out of my way to have that style of pizza. We also had the short rib. I liked the short rib! First time at Osteria Via Stato and we had a wonderful experience. It's such a beautiful restaurant with warm cozy Italian vibes. We had a big group and everyone enjoyed dining at Osteria. The menu has a nice variety and we tried a bunch of the items. We started with the garlic bread, calamari and their famous thin crust pizzas. Each of them was a 10/10. For the main course we had the seafood stew, three different kinds of pasta. For the sides we got spinach and potato fingerlings. The food was absolutely delicious. Everything was freshly prepared and was bursting in flavors. Our server was great and conscious of our dietary restrictions. He made great recommendations. We were so full with the best meal that we had no room for dessert. We need to go back again and this time I need to save room for desserts. Highly recommend this place. read more

My son and I arrived from airport and train and Uber and He was hungry. He ordered penne pasta and I ordered caprese sandwich. He also ordered $3.95 pop. Total was $49 ish including a stupid $1.50 fee. I was bummed when he said Gordon Ramsay Burger was across the street after we ordered. There was no side with the sandwich only red peppers or pimentos which i didn't eat. I gave my son half of my sandwich and he used it to soak up some sauce. Not the greatest value. read more

Had a reservation and was seated quickly. We were seated in a room off to the back that looks like it might be typically used for private parties. We ordered the seasonal pizza as an app. It has grapes, Gorgonzola, and prosciutto. It was very thin, crispy and light. Then we all ordered a pasta dish, and to our surprise it was ready maybe 6 minutes after we ordered. Every thing was very good and filling. The menu is always changing, so you can go back year after year and find fresh, new dishes to love or you can choose from one of the staples that have remained on the menu for years. I love this place! The food tastes like it was made with love and is always very consistent from my experiences. I love the ambience here as well as the story behind the whole restaurant that is s family started !!! They are also a "Lettuce Entertain Restaurant!!" Which I love so much because, I am a member and have been for a long time. I haven't used it in a while and recently learned when I sat at the bar that I had $20, to use!! If you are a reward Member, you can earn points every time you spend. They also have food delivery service available- which I have had delivery many times. I love their pizzas and salads, and have tried many things on the menu by in-house dining. If you have not been here, I believe you should try to at least visit once. For starters we had the garlic oil and bread, a salad, an a bean and tomato dish. For dinner our options were the chicken, a fish with caper sauce, and the short rib. A great restaurant week meal! We were seated right away for our reservation and ordered the RW special-- 3 courses for a great price. Fresh warm bread with garlic olive oil was tough to stop eating to leave room. The first course was so tasty-- soup and meatballs. Our entrees were just as good-- savory short ribs, mushroom pasta, and salmon with potatoes and perfectly crisp bacon bits. For dessert, the panna cotta was good and the ricotta cheesecake was great. We came in for dinner on a Friday night, and despite there being a wedding welcome dinner at the restaurant we were able to get a reservation and received good service. The drinks we ordered were okay- initially I ordered a Manhattan and it came out clear instead of brown, so I ordered a different drink that was prepared correctly after. I loved the place and food. We went on weekdays around 8:20pm. Took 20-25 mins to be seated. The restaurant closes kitchen at 9pm. So, we went through menu while in waiting and finalized the food. Ambience is good. Service was good. We ordered Margarita Pizaa, garlic parmeson bread, seafood stew, orange mule. Pizza was okay. Seafood food had no to less salt, after adding salt it tasted good. Orange mule was as per my taste. GARLIC PARMESON bread was tasty Gelato ice cream waa very yummy. I got Vanilla + choco chip one. Servers are very professional. My wife, son and I ate here during our June 2026 visit to Chicago. Once again we were amazed at how great each dish was. We shared three entrees and the server was great about bring out the meals in a way that made sharing easy. The seafood stew was fantastic. A rich flavorful light red sauce with chunks of fish, perfectly seared scallops,and shrimp. The angel hair pasta with shrimp was also excellent. It was simple yet very flavorful and was my personal favorite. The rigatoni with beef was also amazing. We left nothing on any of the plates, including using bread to dip in the sauces. When I was in Chicago last month, after a long day, I just wanted to grab something quick and head back to my hotel room. So I found Osteria Via Stato nearby, and decided to order a pizza for takeout. The restaurant is located in the lobby of Embassy Suites and I walked in to the bar area and could see the restaurant was full and bustling on a weeknight. Good sign! The staff were very helpful as I looked over the menu. I asked what was popular and what they recommended. The host (friendly, patient, helpful) told me the sausage was made in-house and recommended the housemade fennel sausage pizza. I ordered that and included mushrooms (because you know, vegetables : ) It was a quick 15 minute wait. There is a convenient pick-up window around the corner if you're a hotel guest so that's where I went to pick up the pizza. And wow, it was really good. Lately, I'm really digging a thin pizza crust (not so heavy, not so carby), and this pizza really hit the spot. It was enough for one meal (with some veggies I brought with me) and I had enough saved to eat the next day. YUM. Delicious pizza. And honestly looking over the menu, I had a hard time deciding what to order, because the pasta looked great, too. A little italian gem! My best friend and I came to dine here on a Friday night and the place was poppin! The ambiance is beautiful with a lively bar and dining room that feels like you are sitting inside of an authentic italian house. The service was timely, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the menu. We chose to our a la carte (as opposed to getting the full dinner experience). We started with the warm ciabatta & roasted garlic which was absolutely exquisite! The bread was so warm, fresh, and flakey and the roasted garlic in the olive oil was the perfect pairing. It's also a plus that they keep refilling your bread basket as much as you'd like. For dinner we ordered the hand-rolled cavatelli and cacio e pepe pastas. Both were well-balanced and delicious. My only complaint was there was maybe 5 tiny pieces of sausage in the cavatelli which left me wanting more. But with the quality of this homemade cavatelli I wasn't too upset! For dessert we indulged in the homemade tiramisu. And can I just say it was tiramisuper! One of the best tiramisus I have ever had. People let me tell you about this place right HERE! If you are looking for a good Italian place... STOP LOOKING YOU'VE FOUND IT! This place has everything and they know exactly what they're doing. We walked in and were pleasantly greeted by the host and escorted to our table in the back. Not many people were there that day which was just fine with us. We were surrounded by such beautiful aesthetics - you can tell the building was historical and everything was chosen precisely to fit an old Italian vibe. It was warm and the barely any noise so you can hear your counterparts. We came for our anniversary and our waiter exceeded our expectations of customer service. Having never been to Chicago before, I relied heavily on recommendations from some of the partners I was treating to dinner as to where we'd actually end up eating dinner; Osteria Via Stato was on two of their lists, and their menu seemed to fit all the dietary requirements and restrictions for the group. Our party of six had a 6:30 pm dinner reservation, and we were tucked into a small table in an alcove off the main dining room. This was my first time meeting four of the guests in person, and it was the first time all five of them were meeting, as well. I really wanted to focus on conversation and community, but the table behind us was quickly filled with a rowdy party of 10, which made conversation difficult towards the end. Still, we were able to have a good night and a decent dinner. I took a star off due to the service, which was not good. Our waitress kept stopping about five feet from our table to watch us for a second before disappearing for large chunks of time, occasionally ignoring our attempts to wave her down. I went with the Chicken Mario (with brown butter and broccolini, $22.95) for my main, while my guests' dishes varied from salads to pastas to fish. There was a moment where my gluten-free guest stumped our waitress by asking for a gluten-free side, which the waitress said they didn't do (one of the reasons I went with this restaurant was because they have a gluten-free menu, so the waitress wasn't working with good information.) It took an inordinate amount of time for the waitress to return to confirm they could, in fact, guarantee the side was gluten-free, which was a relief to everyone. The Chicken Mario was pretty tasty. The chicken was cooked well - a tiny crisp to the outside but juicy on the inside. They served it with a lemon, which added a nice zip of citrus to the butter sauce and the broccolini. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, but I didn't get pictures of anything. Not sure I'd go back the next time I'm in Chicago, but it was a good central spot for everyone and it gave us a chance to connect and build relationships, so I call that a win. read more

Heather Grace was our server on a Saturday evening for our party of 4 and she was simply the best! What a great personality and she was super attentive! We came during restaurant week and were delighted to order from that menu. I got chicken mario, my hubs got the salmon and we loved the cocktails as well! I got the a Italian Paloma and hubs got the paper plane. They also serve mocktails! I tried a noperal spritz and it was very tasty, just like an aperol spritz! The decor is great inside, very welcoming and intimate. The only negative is the restrooms. There's only one unisex bathroom available, so there's usually a line. However, the restaurant is located next to and connected to the hotel, so you can use their restroom, but you need to climb stairs and wind around a little to get there, so it's not very convenient. All in all, a terrific night and I'd highly recommend! read more
