    pool and hot tub area
    Dianna H.

I booked a oceant front room for a couples trip for 4 nights via Costco Travel and really enjoyed our stay at Aston Islander on the Beach. We loved being steps away from the ocean, and because the hotel is located on the east side of the island, we were able to catch sunset every morning. We spent some time relaxing by the pool/hot tub and on the chairs provided on the beach but also spent some time exploring the rest of the island. I thought the hotel's location was very conveniently located for that, as it was less than an hour's drive to both the north and south side of the island. The town of Kapa'a is minutes away, and the hotel is very close to the Kapa'a bike path where you can walk/bike along the ocean. Speaking more to the hotel's location, it was amazing that there were stores and restaurants within walking distance. Coconut Marketplace is right in front of the hotel, and there are two fantastictic restaurants (Lava Lava on the Beach and Hukilau Lanai) you can access in minutes. The room itself was decent but not amazing. It felt a bit dated. We found the wifi spotty at times, though sometimes it was fast enough for us to get some work done on our laptops. Other times I had to turn on my phone hotspot because the internet was so slow. There weren't enough outlets in the room either. We struggled to find easy to access outlets and could only find one near the table / patio door, so it was a bit inconvenient to charge our phones there. Two resort amenities we really appreciated: 1) the water filtration machine in the lobby was super helpful and I don't understand why every hotel doesn't have one, and 2) the DVD rental machine. We didn't expect to rent any movies, but we ended up watching 3 movies, mostly at night while we were relaxing in bed. The movie selection was very updated and included a lot of newer movies, which was nice. We were always able to find parking in the parking lot, but there's a lot of additional parking for Coconut Marketplace, so I was never stressed about returning late and not being able to find a spot. I would highly recommend staying at the Aston Islander on the Beach!

Although we recently stayed at this property, I want to provide a caveat up front that we did not stay here via Aston but through Vacasa, the company managing the unit in which we stayed (unit 354). So this review is more about our experience at this property and not so much about the service provided by the property itself. We did indeed love our stay here. Though we have stayed at larger and better appointed condos in the past, we have no complaints about this particular unit, which is arguably one of the two best units on the property in terms of location--third floor, corner unit, and oceanfront. The corner gives you an additional window to make the smallish unit feel larger, and the view front the lanai is amazing. We spent many hours out there just reading, talking, and enjoying the view. (When I say "smallish," I'm not saying the units here are tiny. They are about the size of your average hotel room.) The unit was very quiet, especially with no one above us and a neighbor only on one side. Even while we were on the lanai, what you mostly heard were the waves. The pedestrian traffic on the beachwalk is minimal here. Another bonus is that you are literally steps away from both the Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant, Imua Coffee Roasters, and all of the shops and restaurants at the Coconut Marketplace. I'm not exaggerating. The location is superb. But if you do want to drive somewhere, you are not more than a few blocks to two miles from just about everything else in Kapa'a. The grounds were beautifully landscaped, and we enjoyed every day that we walked through them to our unit. Whoever is taking care of the flowers, plants, and the grounds in general is doing a really great job. During our stay, we didn't encounter any problems with parking, and the walk isn't very far to just about any unit on the property. Our unit had a king size bed, a small table for two, a small kitchenette with a sink and microwave, and a shower/tub combo in the bathroom. The sink is inside the bathroom where the toilet and tub are, but you do have the kitchenette sink if a second person needs to be using a sink while someone is in the bathroom, provided you don't need a mirror right in front of you. Our unit was air-conditioned, which was a plus, and it worked very well. Because we rented through Vacasa, we did not have regular housekeeping--only extra linens and other items provided via Vacasa's housekeeper, as needed. Some people have complained that Vacasa isn't very responsive, but I didn't find that to be the case during our stay. You can easily communicate via text with them, and they respond pretty quickly. We made one request while we were there, and the first person I texted with seemed a bit hesitant to help, but the extremely friendly housekeeper did get back to us and got us what we needed in a very reasonable timeframe. I highly recommend finding a unit that suits you here at the Aston if you are looking for a decent place to stay on the Coconut Coast. You can check directly with Aston, but the best deals are usually found through Vacasa or services like VRBO and Airbnb.

Not the fanciest place, but would definitely stay here again. What a great beachfront location, walking distance to shopping, groceries, restaurants, bars... everything you need. The town of Kapaa itself is an excellent location if you want to visit Poipu and Hanalei areas. Enjoy a nice paved walking or biking trail along the beautiful beaches while pit-stopping on the aide streets to enjoy great local food trucks and shops. The hotel was clean, though slightly dated, but being that you're on the beach, it served its purpose just fine. Nothing like walking out of your room right to the beach to watch the sunset or right from your balcony!

We stayed 12 nights at Islander on the Beach in March 2024, and we absolutely loved it as our home base on Kauai :) The grounds of the property were incredibly well maintained.. the tropical plants were beautiful & smelled so good each morning! The hot tub was the perfect temperature & big enough for 8-10 people cozily. The location in Kapa'a is very central on the island so you can get to Princeville or Poipu in 45 minutes! Our oceanfront unit was on the 3rd floor & it was awesome to have a balcony with chairs & a table to watch/hear the waves crash! The units are all studios with a bed, loveseat pullout bed, & a little kitchenette with a fridge & microwave but no stovetop, hot plate, or toaster oven. There were 3 grills by the pool for cooking too. The air conditioning worked great & the bathroom was pretty big too. The property does have a cute tiki pool bar called The SandBar. The hours were random (6a-11a then 3p-10p).. and sometimes the bartender didn't show up for the afternoon shifts. Weird that you couldn't order a drink at the pool from 11a-3p... at least you can BYOB at the pool! Parking was free & in a lot out front, you get a hang tag from the front desk so you can come/fo as you please; the lot does get full though & the overflow is at Coconut Marketplace. All in all, our stay in Kapa'a was wonderful & the Islander made it even better :) loved the hot tub, our oceanfront balcony, & the property grounds!

View from the lanai and a yummy piña colada.

The only recommendation would be the view and the beach bar, oh and location. Service was mid at best. They put us in a room with a super loud a/c unit (I thought it was an alarm going off), and when we told them that was a deal breaker for us they pushed us to the back of the line for a new room. Check in was supposed to 3pm and we didn't get in until almost 4. They seemed unconcerned with the lout a/c unit and a little offended that it bothered us. Piña coladas are on point, tho, and the view doesn't suck. Lots of rust in the units themselves and furniture could use updating.

My main complaint during my stay is the limited parking. With the number of buildings and the small parking lot, it's a pain trying to get parking if you don't come back early. Also of note, their website hasn't been updated in a while and some things are no longer available like their coffee coupon. The hotel's location is very convenient. It's next to the beach so you can get that nice sunrise view. There is a shopping center right next door. They also have a bunch of different plants around the property with labels you can read about. The hotel room itself was good. They have a kitchen with boilers, fridge, toaster, microwave, and all your kitchen needs. No room service or towel replacements since we stayed only 4 days.

Amenities are good rooms are a little outdated no room service unless you have a stay of 5 days or more. Tile floor twin beds, when we booked we put 2 don't know how to get a queen a bed. For us the twin bed was hard to sleep in we barely fit. good running water for the shower shower gel, shampoo included. Little kitchen no stove sink a few dishes no silverware. microwave. Ac works quiet people respect your space. Pool spa and the beach right in front of you. Towels in the lobby. No food service in this place need to go to the market places. Parking does get full. No elevator stars only up to 3 floors. Balcony locks make sure don't sleep with it open there was a break in at 3am when we were there no security on the premises you need to call 911. Pool and spa are clean. The premises was very clean and well kept. The beach was nice the even had a few chairs out there. There was a homeless guy sleeping behind a log but he didn't bother. Lobby staff most of them Not friendly. For the price it's a good stay.. for me no I am all about customer service we felt very unwelcome here. The room accommodates is a hard no we need sleep and we sleep together I don't know why we didn't get a queen bed booking does not give you an option. Check in is very slow and they are full here more than likely you cannot check in until your time or even later.

We had a really good experience here at the Aston. Overall the beachfront rooms are nice, bed was comfortable and the kitchen amenities were great. It was wonderful to wake up and see the sunrise and then end the day with the sunset. So pretty! The only complaint was that they told us our kids could not go in the hot tub :( We partially chose the place for the pool and hot tub and it was super disappointing! On days that are chilly or raining, a hot tub is a great solution for kids. We also have one at home, so they know how to handle themselves. Overall we liked being on the bike path, near the coconut marketplace and we enjoyed the grounds / all the Hawaiian foliage.

We arrived early in the day so we're not able to get into our room but the staff held our luggage and recommended a few places to eat and watch football. Once able to get into our room which was on the 3rd floor looking over the pool area but far enough away from the noise. The room was quite large with a great kitchen area with granite counter tops and nice appliances. Also a large bathroom with tub and separate shower area as well as two toilets. It was a one bedroom. There was a small lanai off the bedroom and you could open the sliding door from the living room. There was also a washer/dryer in the room. The view from the room looked over the whole pool area which has a winding pool that you can walk around over to the main pool. They also had gas grills to use and many people did. One note is if you open the sliding door in the living room area and don't match up the line in the top of the doors, the air conditioning doesn't go on. We thought the air conditioning quit. After calling the front office someone came within an hour. Told us about the line. We also had an issue with the washer and after a call to the front desk a maintenance person was there within an hour. The staff we interacted with were very friendly and very helpful. Giving us recommendations for a place for fresh fish to grill. There is also a small restaurant which we tried a few nights for some drinks and appetizers. The views of the ocean are great. There are also chairs to sit on the beach area and enjoy the water. The beach is not large but very clean and nice to relax at. There is a shopping center across the street to buy things for the condo. We will stay here again next time in the area.

Walking in to the lobby felt like we were at a premium resort and definitely put us in the right mood. There's a bar and Hukilau Lanai right in the lobby. You can make reservations through Open Table for the restaurant. There's no valet that I saw when we pulled up or a bellboy to help with your bags. Or at least, I didn't see one or ask for one. The check-in process was normal, but after checking in, you are directed to go see the Concierge. I waited a good 15 minutes just to find out that since I'm a member, he doesn't have access to my account and was asked to come back in the morning to talk to someone that does. I wish that all Shell properties would stop this practice altogether. It's already enough that we spent hours traveling to this beautiful property and want to get to our rooms to unwind and freshen up. We do not have time to sit through some kind of pitch. Because I didn't see the Concierge the next morning, they sent me a text and also placed a door tag on my door to remind me to come see them. First off, you're on vacation and do not want to spend an hour or two sitting through some kind of pitch or upsell. I don't know what the point of the wristbands was for, besides not having to carry the room key with you, it was pointless. So I would ignore going to the Concierge altogether. I don't know what was in the Welcome package and didn't want to fall in to that trap, so I just ignored having to go see the Concierge. The property grounds had 1 large pool, 2 smaller 1.5' deep pools and a jacuzzi. There were also a couple of grills and a bar by the pool, which was great. And I saw them being used throughout our stay. There's a nice walkway to other properties or to the beach. Unfortunately, there's no beach access right on the property. Parking was free and you didn't have to hang any parking permit on the car. One big drawback is that there are no elevators. So you'll have to lug all of your items up the stairs. We stayed on the 3rd floor and had our luggage and stuff we bought at Costco. I wished they would have turned on the A/C in the hallways to help with the heat. It was stuffy by the time we got to the top floor. Luckily, the A/C in our room was working well. Our suite was nice and big with all of the amenities needed for our stay. We even did some laundry on our last day and there were 2 packs of detergent provided. We had bath & pool towels in the room. WiFi was just ok, it wasn't the fastest being at 20mbps up and down. It's fine for 2 people, but could bog down with more devices. One of the best things about this location is it's right across the street from the Coconut Marketplace. You'll be able to find pretty much anything you need there. We stopped by here on our way out to Waimea Canyon and also picked up dinner at the store in the deli area. Was also able to grab some souvenirs and shopping on our last day. We've only stayed at Poipu our last 2 visits, but would definitely come back here again. If you decide to come here, ignore going to the Concierge please and don't believe that you need to get their wristbands. We were able to walk around the property and nobody stopped us.

Parking is easy and convenient, and the Coconut Marketplace with ABC store within walking distance really made this location awesome with easy access to shops, grocery, and food. We really missed the convenience later in the trip at another resort. Downtown Kapaa is also a short drive or walk away. The lack of elevators is a major downside at this location, however. For our party, staying three floors up with no elevators was inconvenient but doable, but for others it could be impossible so please be aware and call ahead if this is an issue for you. It has all of the requisite HGI necessities such as clean, standardized rooms, available breakfast made to order, and a price point that does not break the bank compared to big resorts on Kaua'i. I had a comfortable stay here with easy parking, a comfortable room, and good wi-fi. It doesn't hurt that you can see the ocean from some rooms and that the property grounds have some unexpected nice touches such as a koi pond water feature, a spacious airy lobby open to the outside, and easy self parking for a fee. In this genre of Hilton portfolio hotel, it hits a bit above its expected weight. What keeps it in the 4-star range (instead of 5) is its location. It is relatively near Lihue and the airport (about a 12-15 min drive) but far from any of the major resort spots that Kaua'i is really known for (like Poipu or Princeville). Its location is just a couple of minutes drive outside of Kapa'a and if you are not looking for a high end vacation resort experience, this will suffice as a place to lay your head with confidence while helping you respect a moderate budget. It is not cheap by most HGI standards but it is reasonable by local Kaua'i lodging standards. A rental car is a must if you choose to stay here because there really is nothing around you within easy or safe walking distance. That is a problem if you are here to be a tourist and see some sights and places that The Garden Isle is known for. It is this location that keeps the pricing here down but the inconvenience factor high. I liked this property for what it was and I would stay here again if my reason for coming to Kaua'i was for anything other than a higher end resort experience. I'm sure there are even cheaper places to stay on this island but then again, I don't think that the Salvation Army has a loyalty program or a koi pond.

Beach had heavy waves so not swimable when we went in December. BUT! Literally on the bike path that runs along the east coast! Few homeless further up on path but they were not a problem and tidier than those in other states. Quiet resort with plenty of free parking. Heated pool and looks like it was just refinished. Hot tub didn't use but was working and was hot enough. Staffed pool area with board games to lend, yoga mats, beach/pool towels. Snack and soda vending machines. Walkable to all conveniences. Friendly staff. Barhroom towels are fluffy and clean (very white). 2 coffee sachets were provided along with some sugar and Creamer packs. Plenty of paper towels and toilet paper and soaps and shampoos. Icemaker worked like a dream. Came with cooking ware and plates and plastic water pitcher in fridge - yippee. Old school coffee pot and blender. Functioning oven and stove. We used one of the gas grills outside that has a light so you can see what you're cooking. Didn't get a message 1 week prior to checkin so was pleasantly surprised to find all comforts of home. Master bedroom was big with 2 closets. We stayed in the other bedroom with king bed and closet and bathroom just outside the bedroom door. Great set up for 2 couples or family. Wifi and TV worked perfectly. Place was clean when we arrived. It's an updated unit with island feel. It's not the Ritz but for the price and amenities we would stay again.

This place was recommended to us from a work colleague. Months ago my wife asked for us not to be placed in a room on the main street. Well, that just where we were placed. And it seemed like we were told to just accept it and like it. During a week's stay, we got to hear every fire truck, ambulance, etc. at any hour. Think you can enjoy a week of that for your vacation? I think I got better sleep on the plane home. We have stayed in Princeville, like 6-7 times in the past, and I think we'll go back to Princeville in the future. Honestly, I don't think I'd waste my time going back to that resort.

Every person we encountered over our stay felt like longtime friends. The Hotel itself is very modern and beautiful. Although the resort itself had everything to offer, when we did leave the staff had taken the time to learn our names and offer wonderful advice on pls to visit. Our time spent at the Bar getting to know Kolo was even more rewarding, He was an amazing host and took care of us above and beyond. We left with an incredible experience and a new Friendship that we will cherish forever! Thank You Kolo and 1 Hotel. We highly recommend staying here on your visit to Kauai.

Five stars simply do not seem sufficient for our first stay at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay…read more Luxury properties can offer beautiful rooms, spectacular views, and outstanding amenities. What separates an exceptional hotel from the rest is its people and the culture they create. During our stay, we experienced that culture over and over again. Trent at Reception set the tone from the moment we arrived. Each day he made a point of asking how our stay was going and whether Michele or I needed anything. Those conversations never felt scripted. They felt genuine, personal, and reflective of someone who truly cared that our experience exceeded expectations. One interaction, however, perfectly captured what hospitality is supposed to be. While waiting at the hostess stand at Welina Terrace, I noticed Kevin from the Bell Desk walking by with a luggage cart. He stopped, asked if he would be of assistance, and I mentioned that we had purchased a beautiful bottle of Red Burgundy earlier in the day and were hoping to borrow two Pinot Noir glasses to enjoy it in our room. Less than two minutes later--probably no more than 90 seconds--Kevin arrived at our door carrying two proper Pinot Noir glasses. Even better, Robbie, the bartender, had thoughtfully included two generous pours of wine so we would not have to wait before enjoying the bottle. Kevin smiled and said they were "on the house." Later, I went downstairs to thank Robbie personally. His response was memorable: he said he simply could not, in good conscience, send ordinary glasses to a guest enjoying a fine Burgundy. Folks, this is the kind of story you read about in hospitality books. If you've read my recent reviews of 1 Kitchen and Welina Terrace, you'll notice this wasn't an isolated experience. It's the culture of this property. Every interaction reinforced the same commitment to thoughtful, anticipatory service. Managers Martin and Imelda deserve recognition as well. They are professional, approachable, visible throughout the property, and genuinely invested in both their guests and their team. Leadership like that creates an environment where employees feel empowered to deliver memorable experiences rather than simply complete transactions. This was our first stay at a 1 Hotel, and it certainly won't be our last. The spectacular setting of Hanalei Bay is unforgettable, but it is the people who transformed a beautiful vacation into an extraordinary one. Thank you to Trent, Kevin, Robbie, Martin, Imelda, and everyone else who made our stay so memorable. You have earned loyal guests.

We loved our 2bedroom villa, while we had plenty of space the property itself is small enough that walking anywhere doesn't feel like a chore. Here is where we fall off and don't quite hit the 5 stars. Our villa was super clean. Toilets weren't fully cleaned upon arrival and they definitely didn't do a better job during our stay. The couch and blankets had a few mystery stains that grossed me out. Cocktails and the restaurant are insanely expensive. We are talking 28 dollars for a cocktail. Additionally the staff member Nancy (pool attendant) was rude to me. I wasn't able to locate a dry chair in the sun at 4pm. so I asked an employee for permission to use a chair near the cabana. Permission was granted but she wasn't happy about it. So asked me to move, while I didn't have issue with moving I did find it rather unprofessional of her to yell at me for not reading the sign and while she offered to help me when I asked to a dry chair on the sun she walked away ranting about my lack of awareness. To make matters worse the same employee had a separate issue with my husband in reguarda to pool towels. When I tried to address it with the front they weren't very helpful. All in all we did have a great week there and hope to go back.

It's an open restaurant with no doors and being steps from the beach it should've been breezy, especially New Year's Day. They had fans over head but were not using them. I asked if they could turn them on and the lady said she would and never did. That was horrible. Trapped heat and me do not agree. The other thing is the bathroom. It's in the hotel and when asking where it was, I was told "that way" with a point. I went that way and entered the first doors but those were the hotel rooms. I left and went in the next doors and there they were. There was no sign. The "that way" direction was not helpful besides knowing which way not to walk. I've been to a few luaus and they usually split up the different islands in dance and it's apparent. Here, I was lost. It felt rushed and the story didn't -- well ?what story? Really. It was still a wonderful night. We celebrated my son getting engaged that day. Nothing could've killed our night. There is another one on Kauai that is more authentic. I forget which one since it was in 2012 when we went but it was amazing. One thing that was very disappointing was being steps away from the beach yet no viewing of the pig being unearthed. That's a huge part of the luau experience and that was the biggest disappointment. My sister, nephew and (now) daughter-in-law had never been and we were excited for them to see it.

1 Star -- WARNING: This property management company will take your money and put your family at…read morerisk. We booked a week at Mele Kai (March 11-18) for two families, including kids, one of whom was celebrating a birthday on the island. Nearly $8,000. On March 10, with a massive Kona storm bearing down on Kauai, we reached out to Garden Island Properties to discuss our options. Our VRBO messages went unanswered. Our phone call went unanswered. When we finally got a text response, they told us the rain is what gives Kauai its nickname "The Garden Island" and suggested we bring "a flexible plan and rain gear." We weren't being difficult. We wrote back and told them we weren't opposed to being rained on -- our concern was flooding, loss of power, or being stuck on the island. I asked them directly: "Will my family be safe during this massive storm in your place?" Their response? They told us, "I don't mean to downplay the news coverage, but this is fairly typical winter weather for Kauai." They assured us the rental was "not located in a flood zone." Fairly typical winter weather. Not in a flood zone. Here's what actually happened: The Governor declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY. Roads in Poipu -- the exact neighborhood of this house -- were closed due to flooding. Ho'one Road and Ku'ai Road, right by this property, were shut down. The islands were hit with up to 44 inches of rain and 135-mph winds. Schools and government offices closed. Over 120,000 customers lost power across the state. Beaches were closed under brown water advisories warning of sewage overflow and hazardous bacteria. The Red Cross and Salvation Army mobilized relief efforts. Residents were evacuated into emergency shelters. So much for "fairly typical winter weather." So much for "not in a flood zone." And here's what makes it worse: the forecast they themselves included in their own message showed 90-100% chance of rain with thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 50 mph for EVERY SINGLE DAY of our trip. Their own evidence showed this was not typical. They sent it to us and still told us to come. We never made it to Kauai. We couldn't. It would have been dangerous and irresponsible to bring our families -- our kids -- into that situation. Garden Island Properties refused any refund. VRBO has been contacted twice by phone, was promised a resolution email both times, and as of this writing we've received nothing. $8,000. Gone. For a house we never stepped foot in, on an island we never reached, during a declared state of emergency that the property manager called "fairly typical." This is not a review about the weather. Nobody controls the weather. This is a review about a property management company that had every piece of information -- including their own forecast -- telling them this was a dangerous, historic storm, and they still chose to encourage a family with children to fly into it rather than do the right thing. I asked them point blank if my family would be safe. They couldn't even answer the question. They chose profit over safety. Period. If you are considering booking with Garden Island Properties, understand this: when things go wrong -- and in Hawaii, weather can go very wrong -- this company will not have your back. They will take your money, send you a canned aloha, and wish you luck.

This is the case with the people at Garden Island Properties. A week prior to our departure, we sadly had to cancel our travel to Kauai Island because our daughter was hospitalized. I had already paid in full for our three week rental (60 days prior to our departure date) and I did not purchase insurance. This could have been the end of the story because everyone had already been paid. But, the people at Garden Island Properties worked tirelessly to find another renter so we could recover some of our money. The humanity they showed, and the effort they made on our behalf has made me a loyal customer, and I plan to use them to help me with future rental properties going forth. I will also purchase travel insurance!
