Normally I don't post negative comments as I am pretty easy to please in terms of eating out, but this was not a good experience. We were seated promptly, but were not handed menus, so we just sat and felt weird. It took a long time to get our water, and when we finally get our menus, the price of the items were very high. We thought maybe it would worth the price so we went ahead and ordered the 2 person meal, which included beef tenderloin, potato, vegetable, and salad. For $117 plus tax. We wanted our meat medium rare. When we received the food. Half of the meat was very overcooked and dry. The carrots and broccoli were just steamed and with no seasoning at all. The twice baked potatoes were good, and salad was average. With the price they charged, I was expecting the food to be cooked with skills and good flavors. This was very very disappointing for a high priced meal. I think reasonable prices for the meal would be half of what they charged.

Charcoal House is a classic midwestern steakhouse with great food and timeless atmosphere. Waitstaff was there when we needed them, but did not hover over us. Always enjoy getting to meet the owner and it was fun taking to George.

This place is so great. We have been going here for years. An old school steak and fish place, the servers are so friendly and feels like you are family when you are there. Get some onion rings to start (or on your steak). Don't miss the creamy roquefort dressing on your salad, just the right amount, and you'll want to get a roll to wipe up the extra. Steaks are grilled (it is called charcoal house after all) and shrimp is well fried. I also like the lobster tail, just the right size to go with the steak. Go support this local institution, you won't be sorry.

    Special day. Special place

Ask the Community - Charcoal House

Is the Charcoal house on a par with Fleming’s or Tony’s?

Charcoal house it's it's own thing. It looks and feels like an old school supper club. Fleming's is a chain and definitely overrated, Twisted Tree even blows Flemings away. Tony's is better than all above it's Italian so that's another convo too.

I came for a HH and enjoyed three different cocktails. My first was a Gold Rush. It's basically a Bees Knees with Vodka instead of Gin. It was light and refreshing, making it a great start. The second cocktail was one of my all-time favorites, a Old Fashioned. I can honestly say, it was one of the best, if not the absolute best one I have ever had. I finished the HH with a Espresso Martini. It was a good ending to my HH. They use a Cold Brew instead of true espresso, so it had a milder coffee taste. My nosh while drinking was a, Jalapeño Popper Dip. It was okay, in my opinion, it did not fit the description on the menu. Especially, the type of chips described. My friend ordered, The Small Board and it was fantastic and a good value. Our bartenders were friendly and as I stated earlier, they are masters of their skill. What stopped them from getting a 5 Star review, is simple. They do not offer a Martini on their Happy Hour Menu. I'm a Martini Man and that disappointed me, but it wont keep me away, it just keeps them short of 5 Stars.

We were seated promptly (we had reservations) We were greeted by our server; Kendall (sp?) and she was so friendly and professional. We ordered our drinks and bread service. We ordered our food and had just a little bit of a wait for our meals. I will say that it was clear when we got our food, that our wait was for our food to be prepared FRESH. I ordered the pasta special which was veal cannelloni and my lord it was so good. I wish it was on their regular menu. The cannelloni noodles were the perfect texture, and the veal filling was perfection. My brother ordered the Salmon piccata, which he orders each time he goes, so you know it's got to be good. I love how comfortable this place is too. The whole feel is cozy. The seating is very comfortable. I'm big on "the right, not too bright lighting, but also not too dark" and they have done a great job taking care of both. Great use of lamps at the tables. I have to give a super shout out to our server Kendall. She informed us at the end of the meal, while she was chatting with us briefly, that that night was only her 2nd night there. We all arrived fairly close together, so we just started filling in seats as we arrived. The had us at the back of the restaurant at a banquet seat with tables and additional seats on the outside. It was a little tight, but we worked it out. The hostess was nice when welcoming us in and getting us going. Our server was Tera, she had our large group plus other tables, so she was doing her best to coordinate. We shared menu's, they had regular menus and special menus for Valentines Day. Tara was great with keeping track of the couples when ordering. I ordered the Butcher Board as an appetizer to share with others. Everyone really enjoyed it, especially the toasted bread. The salami, sausage and Braunschweiger. There was a buffalo chicken terrine that was different but good. Grain mustard aioli and house made pickles rounded out the board. I also ordered a cherry margarita as my first of two drinks. The second one was a Hugo Spritz. Both were ok, not great. I ordered the Tenderloin from the Valentine menu. There was a 20-30 minute wait so we found seats at the bar and ordered cocktails. Very good. Very strong. The Block is a great space. Tall ceilings, warm & inviting, perhaps a little low lighting for us challenged folks, but nice, easy to read menus made up for it. A busser brought us water and shortly behind him was Laura-Beth, (our server) with a big smile and menus. After explaining the menu, specials, and taking our drink orders she left us to think about our choices. The menu is a little limited but includes sandwiches as well as entrees including fish option.. Being a "butcher" restaurant we both opted for the ribeye, medium rare. The steak comes only with fries which I ordered while my date went for whipped potatoes. I also went for a side of spinach. We also split a Block Salad as a starter. Choosing to split the Block Salad was a good idea. It was more than enough for two. It was great version of a chopped salad with fresh greens, bacon, smoked ham, egg, house-smoked cheddar, tomatoes, red onion, dressed with just enough buttermilk dressing. Really enjoyed it and just the right amount of salad. Only criticism is not salt and pepper on the table. Probably by design but disappointing. Next came our steaks and sides. We both ordered medium-rare. Her steak was a little under but close enough. My steak was raw in the center. I should have said something but there wasn't so much it was inedible for me. Better under than over! The seasoned fries were good and the whipped potatoes very good were delicious. The fresh spinach was cooked perfect, but under seasoned. All in all, good sides. We finished with Irish Coffee and vanilla ice cream. Kudos to the staff A special thank you to our server Laura-Beth. You were spot on friendly, courteous, attentive, and made our evening great and not just good. Overall, a good place, A bit expensive but where isn't these days. Well worth a try if you haven't.
