Having internet standalone and the bill is almost $100 for the lowest speed they offer is ridiculous. It takes about a half hour to navigate to find something to watch. Would take longer but I usually settle for anything just to be able to watch my tv. Lose the signal and need to unplug repeatedly every evening. I've been putting up with this for months. I'll call but not confident anything will change. For the past year my RCN bill has gone up a few dollars almost every month. Last month it went up $15. When I called I was told that this was a yearly increase and nothing could be done. I did some research and she is right. There is no viable option in this area. This month it went up $5. I recently had some issues when dealing with a local RCN facility in Bethlehem, Pa. I called yesterday because pricing was just increased during this unprecedented time by about 20% and the customer care person told me I could go elsewhere and schedule cancellation. Now I'll be reaching out to SECTV and DirecTV to see if they actually want my business. Very sad how this transpired. Internet is just ok. I have 1 gig and it should be the fastest all the time but it isn't. I had a terrible experience with my TV service. After waiting to tell my TV problem to RCN during a 2 week period the way RCN handled my problem was to send me constantly back to the main menu. When I finally got a customer service rep they would hang up on me or I would get a busy signal and then was hung up on - I got Dish. No problems so far with Dish and I had a great technician for the installation. read more

After paying a year of high cable bundle prices after moving into the area.....I decided to downgrade to internet plus phone.....had to wait forever on the phone...."unusually high call volume". Found out that they won't give an existing customer the "promotional" offer on their website because they aren't coming out to install. I questioned this multiple times.....apparently they are willing to lose a customer rather than give them a decent price. Other cons: their TV on-demand system is a joke as is their website. It is about 10 years behind Comcast that I had before moving to Allentown. Plus the surcharges ($13.28 + $12.57 + $12.10/month) RCN gives you is 3 times what I paid previously. Our internet connection was consistently turning on and off I upgraded our service from 25 mbps to 155 mbps service and the only difference that we paid a higher premium and the internet service was about the same. I called RCN Tech support and on there end also noticed the service turning on and off. After unplugging and rebooting the service it still continued turning on and off. We had Technical Support come out to our residence 3 different times and I was told the problem was on a particular pole and that we had neighbors also experiencing the same issue. I asked billing if they can adjust our bill for all the poor service and they lowered our bill slightly which seemed to be a slap in the face. I talked to RCN E-Care about downgrading back to 25mbps and asked about using my own equipment rather than paying $6.95 per month and I was told that we could use our own router but we would still get billed 4.95 if we use out own router so either way they are going to milk a customer for all they can. We had some billing issues and made a payment before it's specified due date and later that week. On 01/16/17 we dropped off RCN's equipment. We just received a Statement Dated 01/29/17 and noticed we are still being billed for service that we cancelled and no longer have or need. I asked the RCN E-Care person if she can prorate our past due balance and remove the other charges that don't apply and let us know what our balance would be and we got that bill and she contacted me on 02/16/17 and told her I would pay the balance of $82.10 soon. Today we got a letter dated 02/15/17 from a collection agency! This is how RCN treats loyal customers of 8 years! read more

I would rate RCN 0 stars if possible. They are the absolute worst cable/internet company to deal with and their customer service is awful. I have to reset my modem every other week and I am never able to speak to a representative. If they weren't my only option for cable and internet, I would've left them a long time ago. Back in April I bought a new internet router which my modem wasn't compatible with and the proceeded to tell me that the problem was with my router. They also wanted to send out a technician to my house just so they could charge me $60!!! I immediately hung up and went to RCN to switch out the modem myself. They sure are good at ripping people off. RCN shouldn't charge as much as they do for their services. Absolutely do not recommend to RCN to anyone. Once satellite brings back the channels it lost, i will go back. Its the only reason I had to switch. RCNs techs are pretty useless too. Anything beyond screwing in the cable, they are confused. I started Gigabit Internet service with RCN two years ago. The initial price was $64.99/month plus $10/month for a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. I recently bought my own modem, saving the $10/month charge. In the meantime they reduced the rate to $59.99/month. Until this month when they increased the monthly fee to $77.99/month, claiming that the $59.99/month rate was for only new customers. Service has been fine, but an increase in the monthly rate of 30% does not seem justified. read more

OK I understand maintenance. This is part of the email I received 10:30 at night: "To minimize any inconvenience, we've scheduled our work to begin at 1AM, when fewer customers are using their RCN services. During this time there might be a brief interruption to your RCN Internet and Phone service that should not last beyond 6AM. When our work is completed, your service will automatically return." I started calling at 6:30 AM the next day when service had not returned. On my third call at 11:30, I reached a polite lady who helped me restore service. Had I taken their word for it and waited for it to "automatically return", I would still be waiting. I moved to the Lehigh Valley about two years ago from Northeastern Indiana and switched to RCN, since I couldn't get AT&T Uverse (or any other fiber in my area). Like others have said RCN customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Every time I've called it's either been a semi-rude to extremely rude Customer Service Rep... and the problem is always my fault. The bill was always about $200 when the bill was only supposed to be around $130 for the cable and internet bundle (a lot of one-time fees for thing never explained) and there was always a fee for phone or online payments, but if I mailed in the bill, the next month I would always get a late fee... The service is "okay" for middle-of-nowhere; however I don't live in the middle-of-nowhere, so yeah. I finally came to my breaking point a month ago when I decided to drop the cable part of the bundle (long story short, I only really watch three channels, but to get those three I had to have a higher level cable pack). I was going to keep the internet, but upgrade to the 50mbps download. The Rep that I was talking to, must of been have a bad day as she was the rudest one that I have had yet, said that it would be over $80 per monthfor just the 25mbps download that I currently had and the 50mbps download would be over $120 per month. I brought up the fact that the Gig speed was advertised as only $59.99 per month for the first 12 months to upgrade... The conversation end when the Rep hung-up on me. This was it for me; as someone who has worked in call support (IT) I understand hanging-up on a customer who is being harassing or completely over the top, but not when they are asking completely relevant questions in a calm professional manner; I wish that I had been recording that conversation... I called up Service Electric and an installation technician was able to come out the next day. So, needless to say I called back RCN and cancelled the service completely. The Rep that I talked to then was the only one the whole time that I have been with RCN was was extremely understanding and professional, but too little too late. I returned my boxes, remotes, cables, and router to the Bethlehem offices that day(rush hour traffic Friday on 22 is not fun). In conclusion, I do not recommend RCN. The service is spotty at times, the bills are always higher than what they should be, and the customer service is horrible. read more

IT'S A SCAM, RUN AWAY WHILE YOU HAVE ANY SANITY LEFT!!! I signed up for RCN thinking I would be paying $55 for the advertisement they had for high speed internet. EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT IS A LIE. I added high speed internet for $10 even though that was in the advertisement price. Regardless of adding that the internet and wifi connection have been TERRIBLE. They advertise low prices but the service you're getting is absolutely atrocious, I can't even imagine what kind of service you'd get for just the advertisement package. I am now paying $100 a month for service that does not work. They sneakingly and strategically keep raising the prices without informing you. When you call the company, they send someone over to "fix" the service issue, but not before trying to upsell you some device that "may" help fix the connection. The tech came and of course, no issue was found, and apparently the only solution is to rent an eroo device which will be an additional $10 charge added to your monthly bill. Since I was cornered and unfortunately work from home and have kids who are taking classes online, I reluctantly bought the rental device. I heard the tech on the phone call the company and say "speed it up now" ummm... are they purposely slowing internet down do you have no choice but to buy higher priced packages ???? So now, not only am I paying for added high speed internet, but am now paying for a device which is meant to help the high speed internet work ? RIDICULOUS. Fast forward to two months later, and increased blood pressure because of this USELESS THEIFING COMPANY, wifi is exactly the same as before their quick fix. I am unable to take any business calls because the connection is so poor, I don't even stay in the house to do my work which puts me at risk since I am outside now during a pandemic. My kids are forced to stay with their aunt since they can never complete school work during the week in our house. Short version: If you go to RCN watch your bill very carefully because they will try to steal your money at every opportunity they get. Long version: Finally switched to another provider and in typical RCN fashion they ripped me off again. I canceled service and turned in my equipment on the 12th. I was assured my service would be canceled on the day I turned in my equipment. A week later I noticed my bill had not been adjusted and online it looked like I still had service. I called and enquired and was told that my service had indeed been canceled on the 12th. When I asked when my bill would be changed as I didn't want to pay for a month when I didn't even have service for 1/2 of it I was assured it would be adjusted any day now and I certainly wouldn't be charged the whole month. Needless to say, a week later I was charged for the whole month. They claim I will be getting a credit but given their track record I'll believe it when I see it. The cancellation was also typical cable company BS. My promotional rate ended and I asked if there was anything they could do on price. The only thing they could do was sell me more services I didn't want. So I found cheaper cable elsewhere and called them back to cancel and all of a sudden they could do something on price. Had to argue forever with the person on the phone to get him to agree to cancel my service and then had someone else call and e-mail me to try to get me to change my mind. read more

RCN in Illinois charges a 33% fee that it keeps. RCN customer service tells customers its government taxes but look at your bill closely and it will show it all goes to RCN. Just a sneaky way to charge more money and blame it on the government. RCN cannot be trusted. read more

Wow. I thought my experience with Comcast was bad. Sure, the Lehigh Valley doesn't have a comprehensive cable contract monopoly, like the East Bay, but not every town and subdivision can choose between the several local cable companies. Visiting the family, stuck with RCN for the time being, I got to see something really awful. Just like with Comcast, the digital transition also meant a cable transition, with a set-top box now required to access all the channels, especially in HD. But RCN, which offered a ton of HD content just a few months ago, has now pulled all HD content from the standard cable package. Can't go to antenna, thanks to Lehigh Valley geography (and past stupidity by local governments), so all that free broadcast HD/digital content sent out by the networks is blocked by RCN, unless you want to "upgrade." Severe content downgrade at the same price? Nice. Even worse, the required set-top box now spreads the 100-or-so available channels over 1,999 positions, with unavailable/pay content mixed in between available channels. Since the standard box is a poor-quality piece of electronic crap, you have to awkwardly scroll past hundreds of blank channels at glacial speeds, or, even worse, keep a handwritten list of channels of interest so you can enter the numbers by hand. So, how much to restore service to something like they had before? Looks like an additional $20 a month. i switched from a local competitor, and so far I'm really happy with RCN. The service has been great and i got a great price. I picked up cable and internet from RCN with an HD DVR. Installation (which they waived the fee for) went smooth. The installer ran all the wires needed and put in wall plates in a couple rooms. That's the only thing I don't like about cable is all the wires... anyway, the picture quality is good, I'm just getting used to the new channel numbers. the internet is pretty fast, but does get bogged down on weekends and peak hours. the trick is to call and tell them you are getting pricing, but don't sign up. just tell them that you need the pricing and you are also calling a couple other companies, and be sure to name them. i did that, and later that day got a call from a "specialist." he gave me a fantastic deal. RCN is barely adequate and has recently raised their prices. However to add insult to injury they have begun a new scam. They hold your check until you have incurred a late fee and then charge you an extra ten dollars, claiming a "late fee". I believe they want people to sign up for automatic billing and so make it inconvenient and expensive to send a check. Judging from what I have read on yelp I'm not alone in my annoyance at RCN. RCN, what can I say? This cable provider is not a company I want to deal, but with the lack of providers in my area I must deal with them. Their customer service, from what I've experienced is a low quality. The first time I called Customer service I wanted to change my cable and Internet package so I could obtain faster Internet speeds. Speaking with the representative to switch packages; I discovered that they would not do such a thing even though they were promoting it to new customers. In order to acquire what I desired I had to threaten them that I would find a different cable provider than the finally fell through. I received my 10mbps Internet speed packaged with basic cable for the same price I been paying. Recently, with the economy affecting my greatly I need to reduce cost in bills. So I decided to cancel my cable services and keep my Internet package. Once again, I called RCN customer service to do so except this time it was an easy transferal. Without any problems Rcn allowed me to upgrade my Internet speed and cancel my cable service. They even offered to upgrade the best Internet speed they can provide with the same cable package I had for the same price I was already paying. On the negative side: my apartment was disconnected in error when a neighbor (on a different floor) moved & it took DAYS until RCN fixed things. NO refund. I've been paying for 50 mbps. Live streaming is frequently interrupted. Speedtest results over the past month range from .02 to 20.2. RCN says they measure what comes into the building, not what's being delivered to my apartment. It was great...to start. They lure you in with a great promo rate and then hike it up substantially after a year. After being a loyal customer for four years, you think they would value you and work with you to keep you, but it is clearly not something they are interested in. When we finally decided to drop cable because the costs were just too high, we found out that internet would be 45% more than their advertised price on the website because "we aren't new customers". I am a customer of RCN, not because I want to be, but because I am not allowed any other choices where I live, which is a subject for discussion all on its own. Needless to say, if I could have another service provider, I definitely would. The first problem with RCN is the many, many discrepanices in the pricing and billing policies from customer to customer. I made a comment one day at a family gathering about how much I was being charged for my TV connections. It turns out that several of my family members were not paying for additional connections at all, but I have been for over 2 years now. This leads me to the next issue, Customer Service. I don't think they know what the term means at RCN. The telephone support/billing people that I talked with are not at all helpful, not even curteous. And not one person over there could explain, in any fashion that made sense, why one customer can have 6 connections for which they are paying nothing and another can have 6 connections and be charged $5/month per connection for the exact same service. And don't get me started on the cost of service from RCN. Nothing advertised ever matches the actual billing, and if you sign up for their 'Basic' service, you might as well just stick an antenna on your TV, you would get the same number of channels.
