I was disappointed with my recent visit to Athena. The menu is surprisingly limited with no hot vegetables at all. We ordered a mixed appetizer plate and the items were just jumbled together. Everything tasted the same and no one knew what they were eating. The Greek salad was tiny with a too oily dressing. Despite being listed on the menu, there was no moussaka available. My veal souvlaki platter came with a single skewer containing only five or six small, dried out pieces of meat. The sides didn't help much - just some average tasting rice and a few slices of tomato and onion. Our server was perfect pleasant but overall the food quality felt below a diner standard while the prices were noticeably higher. For me there's no return visit. read more

I love Athena Greek Restaurant in Amityville. I haven't found a Greek restaurant I like better in the area. I don't want to name the places I think are awful because I don't give bad reviews. I realize how it can have a negative effect on a business. If I don't like it I just don't go back. The food is amazing. The Spanakopita is excellent. I get the Chicken in an orange ginger sauce or the berry sauce. I have become a regular patron and I will continue to come once a week. They do great take out as well. I used to loooove this place. But unfortunately, last time I went my mother and I split a grilled chicken greek salad. 3 days later, within minutes of each other, we became very ill. It was clear we got food poisoning from the salad, because it's the only meal we shared that whole week and we became sick at almost the exact same time. It wasn't contagious because no one else in our family got sick. Either the chicken was undercooked or they didn't wash the lettuce properly. DISCLAIMER: I rarely write reviews and never thought I'd take the time to write a negative one. However, my recent experience at Athena left me no choice but to tell my story. Backstory For two decades, my family has been consistent Athena customers. The food is very good and we enjoy eating Greek. Unfortunately, a shadow hangs over this place stemming solely from the owner, Mike (AKA Satan's Spawn), whose repugnant and reprehensible reign of terror has reached the point of no return. Stepping into his restaurant creates a sense of dread and anxiety. Walking on eggshells around Mike has isn't anything new, as his temper flares at the slightest "inconvenience," whether it's a simple question about the menu or his palpable frustration as he takes down your order. As if dealing with this abrasive, prima donna was the only tax one had to pay for your meal, the last year 3 years or so, our to-go orders are incorrect about 75% of the time. The best part: Mike blames the mistake on you, never accepting accountability. And he makes you wait a half-hour while the order is prepared, all the while your original order gets cold and soggy. And as I'm sure you guessed, you always pay full price. Those entering the restaurant will unquestionably notice the somber atmosphere within the dining room -- a direct result of Mike's brooding, irascible demeanor. Clearly, his behavior has driven away customers who'd much prefer to dine in than have to deal with his tantrums. Recent Events While the food at Athena has been the primary reason for our loyalty, our recent encounter was the final straw. We put in a to-go order for a family member's birthday and this again turned into an absolute fiasco -- two of the entrees we ordered were simply forgotten. (We obviously learned to check the bag before leaving) Rather than taking responsibility for the error, Mike predictably shifted the blame onto us, again demanding full payment and subjecting to us to a 30 minute wait. TL:DR Mike from Athena is a gaping a$$hole and he does not deserve your business. read more

As always, the food is delicious. Casual dining and no frills. We didn't feel rushed and were able to catch up with old friends. Veal Mediterranean and Chicken Mediterranean were excellent. The Greek salad is the best. Fresh. Note: this is not a "fine" dining establishment but the service is efficient and friendly. My family and I have been going to Athena for probably 40 years! It's the best authentic Greek Food! It's always consistently delicious. The service is excellent and always friendly. My wife and I were craving Greek food, however being relatively new to the area, we had no idea that this place was that close. We can not thank the owner enough for taking our order just before closing. We are truly thankful and can not express enough just how much we really enjoyed our food. The Gyro's, Taziki Sauce, Fries and Salads were simply GREAT! I am sorry that I did not order an extra Gyro for later. I had a horrible experience in this restaurant. The owner was nasty. I wanted to put the tip on my credit card, because I did not have enough money to pay for the whole tip. I was taking my aunt for dinner. (Her sister just passed). He told me no tips on credit cards. I asked why isn't there any signs in the restaurant or why didn't the waitress tell me I can't put the tip on my credit card before I ordered. He said everyone knows. He then decided to yell over my head and tell my aunt that I do not have enough money for the tip. I already told him that there was a death in the family and he kept raising his voice. I just wanted to get out of their fast. He started coming towards me and still yelling. I had to tell him to step back twice. I was so uncomfortable I just wanted to leave and not come back. I felt bad for my aunt. She was mourning the passing of her sister and had to be stuck in the middle of this situation. It was horrible and I will never go back there again. read more

Visited on 6/19/24 and as always, the food was outstanding. Enjoyed the cold sampler platter which was enough for 4 people. The chicken kabob was so tender and seasoned well. The chicken with the plum and berry sauce was amazing. My father ate the entire portion and it was quite large. My husband had the gyro and veal kabob and the meat was also very tender and seasoned well. We love their greek salad. They put dill and other seasonings into the dressing and it is our favorite greek salad of anywhere that we have tried it. I had the Chicken Diane and it was delicious. I love my food hot and they always bring out the food the way that I like it. The service by our waitress was great as usual. The ambiance is very calming. My son has autism and he is always so relaxed when he dines here. There are no distractions to take away from having a pleasant dining experience. Athena stands alone for the finest quality and flavorful Greek food anywhere around. They make everything from scratch so you will be waiting a little (take out orders take 45 minutes minimum, so call way ahead for when you need the food), however good things come to those who wait! Trust me on this. The food has a homemade taste to it with an emphasis on fresh herbs such as dill and parsley. All the Greek classics are finely represented on their menu offerings such as Dolmadakia, Spanakopita, Gyros, and Souvlaki, however some specialties such as Chicken Pandora (braised chicken breast baked with raisins, walnuts, mushrooms in a wine garlic sauce), is out of this world delicious - and for 14.95 (including a Greek salad or soup AND rice AND pita) is a steal! The Moussaka here is killer and comes prepared either with the classic meat sauce Bechamel topped or a vegetarian version. Both are 12.95 and easily worth every morsel. The dining room it self is very basic and small, but is nicely done with some minimal Greek bric-a-brac surrounding the room and dim lighting. Service has always been friendly and knowledgeable on any of my visits here. For lovers of Greek cuisine I highly, highly recommend Athena. The place is a little hard to fine as it is located in a small corner of a small strip mall and parking can be treacherous on weekends. Tip: use Brownstone's Coffee Shop as landmark to find as it is in the same lot. read more

Parking was available even though it is in a shopping strip of stores and we landed a spot right in front. Very small quaint place, walked in and was told to grab any table we wanted. Hostess/waitress came over an gave us menus, explained lunch specials... she gave us glasses of water without ice which I found a bit strange. We started with a cup on lemon/chicken soup which was helpful considering the air conditioning was working too well. It was decent soup, nothing to rave about. Ordered falafel balls, they came out and looked like the shape of torpedos, not as balls, but were tasty and presented well. Enjoyed throughly. Next we ordered a gyro platter over rice and a chicken kebab salad. Both were presented well. The chicken was tasty and very tender. The gyro was authentic but could have used more meat on the platter. All in all the lunch was good, the ambiance though was lacking. Very plain decor and it was freezing inside! We were shivering at one point, maybe it was good not to have ice in the water, but warm water is not very refreshing. At one point there was some background music but suddenly went off and never restored. For a quick greek bite to eat, not a terrible choice but I have had better, we like trying new things on Mondays when I have my day off..... PS - When handed the check, I opened the book to find a note that states 'We ONLY accept Visa/Mastercard & Tips must be in cash' I being the owner of a restaurant would HIGHLY recommend this be posted on the front door/window or in the menus. As a new nearby community member a few years ago, my daughter called and picked up a Togo order. Her first bite was met with amazement! Since then we have been enjoying the indoor dining where the owner, a previous resident of Greece, is the chef serving ethic dishes found in the countryside of that beautiful country!! Every dish is soo delicious and is created and served with much passion! Ofcourse the humus and pita bread are great but the Greek salad is a must! The entrees are delectable, a sure treat!!!
