We got the order delivered to us. We got the chickpea salad, which was light and refreshing. But on the smaller side. So I'd be more of a side salad serving rather than a full entree. It was lemony and had fresh onions and herbs. It was clean and soft so it never felt too heavy after eating it. The Melitzanosalata was actually better than the hummus in my opinion. You can taste the difference between the two. The hummus was bland, and the other was savory with a bit of saltiness. It definitely paired well with the fluffy pita! Finally the Mousaka was good. It was savory and the eggplant was cooked nice and tender. The salty cheese paired well with it since the eggplant does not carry flavor well but does pair well with other foods! read more

They forgot half my order first off. The athena greek feast that was the second half that did arrive, but unfortunately the meat was very dry and the rice had a weird chemical taste to it. It also came with a box of cold potatoes and defrosted previously frozen vegetables. I had to stop eating it and throw it away. read more

I'm trying to support the DC restaurant community by ordering from restaurants daily while we together go through this disastrous pandemic but I feel this restaurant doesn't care about what they send you for food. Tonight I ordered a simple dinner through caviar delivery - 2 gyro sandwiches with fries and a baklava. I received the most disgusting meal. 2 Burnt, dry and cold gyro sandwiches. Pita was burnt, gyro very dry & food cold ( like cooked 1 hour prior to delivery - I requested for tzatziki sauce on the side- nothing no sauce. Fries tasted like the oil hasn't been changed in weeks. The baklava inedible, must be at least 2 plus weeks old. Most disgusting meal. The whole meal was inedible, threw out everything! Can't eat burnt bitter pita! Please stop your deliveries if you can't sent a half decent simple meal for $40. read more

Long time customer here. Orders used to be a decent sized meal. The last two times we ordered, the potion of meat has been very small. This last time, we received 2 very small strips of gyro, a chicken skewer with 4 ver small pieces of chicken and a beef skewer with equally small pieces beef. Excellent Gyro piled high with crispy tender meat and a generous helping of fresh toppings. We ordered the lamb gyro wrap. The shaved lamb meat is phenomenal. The crust is crisp and just salty enough with a tender interior. The pita wrap was fluffy and soft. It allowed the gyro insides to feature well. It's decent Greek food - it overall hits the mark, but not really one of my favorites in DMV. Tried both takeout and through delivery. Price point is a little higher than the recent menu pictures - $10 for a gyro sandwich and $18 for their combo platter, neither of which I found unreasonable. Somehow surprised the best experience I had was with the calamari - it indeed was fresh, and the way the breading clumped together only brought home that it was finished that way in-house. The rest of the food I've had are variants of the gyro - which plenty of people like but maybe just isn't for me. I'm not really a big fan of giant leaves of lettuce in my pita, but that's just a personal choice. The salad is actually quite good with the lemon and I got a dolmades too, but I went through the meat too quickly. As for the combo platter, wasn't impressed with their kefte or rice - they both felt just underwhelming. If I'm here with friends and they want to go, I'm down. Just think I need to see more ups in the menu before I can crave it on my own. read more

One of the things that made me sad about moving back to the city was the fact that I had to leave behind so many delicious eateries that I've grown fond of in the 'burbs. Greek food was the thing that I missed the most, so I was delighted to go to Yelp Eats and find that there was a highly rated Greek restaurant not far from me. Bonus: they deliver! I could not believe my good fortune, especially because I was way too tired to go out and pick up food for myself. Also, there was some nasty storm coming and I did not want to be caught out in it. I decided on an Athena salad, a gyro sandwich with extra tzatziki on the side, and a piece of baklava. The Yelp app gave me an estimated delivery time of one hour, and my food arrived only a few minutes after that... and it was very much worth the wait. The salad was fresh and delicious, and topped it with dolmathakia (stuffed grape leaves). Nice touch! The gyro was huge... it barely fit in my face. I felt like Guy Fieri trying to shove this huge sandwich into my mouth. The pita was warm and chewy; the meat was tender and delicious, but I was really disappointed that they forgot my extra tzatziki. *sad face* Fortunately, they made up for it with an absolutely amazing baklava. I have never seen baklava sliced into pieces that big. No kidding, it took me at least three days to eat it.... and it was absolute perfection. Flaky and crispy and dripping with sweet deliciousness. The only thing missing was a glass of Ouzo. I'm so happy to find a place that gives me my Greek food fix... and without me having to leave the house! read more

I really, really did not want to leave my old neighborhood and move up to 16th St Heights. Moving away from downtown was a marital compromise to keep my husband happy and keep our family in the city. I was super pouty about moving and then my husband reminded me -- "Juliet, that Greek restaurant is super close to our new house." BAM! Having Athena Grill in the neighborhood is one of the bright spots in my life right now. I love love love love love Greek food (Greece is our favorite place in the world) and having a small, unfussy, GOOD Greek food spot a few blocks away makes me all sorts of happy. I don't think I've had anything at Athena Grill that I (or my husband) haven't liked. For under $10 you can get a really awesome falafel or gyro or souvlaki pita sandwich (fries are additional). Meat is tender and flavorful, pitas are fluffy, salads are fresh. A platter is great bang for your buck and will easily feed two people. The baklava is also really good. Greece was where I learned that a cucumber could be delicious, and Athena clearly takes care that even the side salad and dressing is consistently fresh and crisp. Can't say enough good things. The worst customer service in DC. Placed an online order today and half of it was delivered, when I called to inquire I was very rudely told that they called to tell me they were out of the items, and a man answered my phone. No one called me, no man (I am a woman) answered my phone. Extremely rude staff member making aggressive accusations and responding to my complaint with "whatever". The last order we placed (several months back as we took a break from Athena Grill because of poor experiences), was placed around 6pm, items missing again, we let it pass as they were small. Around 10pm a delivery person calls me to tell me they have the sauce I ordered at my door, I informed them I received my order at 6, and didn't order again, so they have the wrong address, and my family is sleeping. After ending the call they called me 4-5 times, texted, and rang my doorbell. In the morning, there was a bag with a container of sauce at the door. Very odd, and again very rude. The food is not worth the poor experience. Avoid. read more

No frills, friendly spot for yummy Greek food. Just arrived in Washington, DC, famished and ready to start the sightseeing. Hubby and girls had chicken and falafel gyros, which were described as delicious, flavorful pita bread with red onions, hummus, taziki sauce. I sampled the falafel Greek salad served with pita bread, taziki sauce and an herby and citrusy vinaigrette. The falafel was hearty and crispy. I'm not sure why I've never reviewed this place. If I want a gyro and I'm in the NW area of DC, this my place. Those gyros be so thick, I end up putting 1/2 the meat on a salad for another meal. That is actually the one thing that's always in my fridge. A salad. I ordered for delivery one time and the order was wrong, I called and the manager was great. The delivery service reimbursed me. So the next time I ordered, I called first and my order was perfect and they threw in some extra food as if their normal servings are not enough. It didn't go to waste. Since I just ordered my fifth (consistently excellent) delivery from Athena Grill, it is time for a positive review. Athena Grill has great dolmas, gyros, and falafel; there is enough of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options to satisfy any need. The salads and vegetables that come with the platters are fresh, as are the grape leaves and other ingredients. The fries are as they ought to be when served with a gyro - a bit crispy and salty. It is always a great surprise to order your favorite kind of food from a place you haven't tried and find it much better than expected. We have ordered delivery from Athena Grill several times over the last 1.5 years and it is consistently good. The delivery is generally on-time and the order correct. It is for sure one of our go-tos for delivery. Sometimes, if an order is placed in the middle of the day, the gyro meat can be dried out, but if ordering during main eating times then it is always great. We've had the grape leaves, gyro sandwich/platter, chicken kebob sandwich/platter, and the shrimp salad (risky for a delivery order!) and enjoyed them all. Have never dined in. read more

I saw via the Community Alliance for Upper Fourteenth Street (CAUFS) that this place just opened so, as a lover of Greek food, I went there last night. As I understand it, the owners are the same as the nearby La Villa Pizzeria, which we also enjoy. We ordered two platters lamb and combo (see pictures). Both came with a salad and bread. It was more food than needed to happily feed two adults and a two-year-old. The lamb chop platter had three chops. The meat was tender, perfectly done, and ample. The green beans were a bit softer than I like but that's common among Greek spots, in my experience. The combo platter. The soulvaki, kofte, and kebab were all excellent. They comped us a dessert which was both delicious and kind. Athena Grill is family friendly and decidedly informal. The service was friendly. The food was plentiful and pleasant. We'll definitely work our way through the menu. This place won't compete with the Greek Deli on 19th Street (who can!?) but is a good value for a convenient neighborhood spot. It's one of our go-to's for ordering delivery. My wife and I both love Greek food and have been chomping at the bit to find a good Greek place near the area. About 4 months ago, we discovered this place and haven't looked back. Their gyro meat has good crisp on the edges, is tender, and isn't too salty. Lots of Greek spots i've experimented with either have flabby gyro meats, or are too salty. While i always elect for gyro dishes, my wife usually goes with a chicken dish and most of the time it's spot on. Not dry and seasoned well. Their portions are good and they always deliver within the time frame they say they will. read more

Went here after reading on PoP that it was open. I was impressed walking in, by the aromas wafting from the kitchen, the clean dining area (with just enough seating to be comfortable. I ordered the chicken souvlaki and a side of fries, and extra tzatziki. The tzatziki was excellent. The sandwich was excellent, the fries were fries. They didn't blow my mind (could have used some greek seasoning or just something to give them some umph) but all in all excellent. I'm thrilled to see so much fresh seafood/fish on the menu. Definitely a breath of fresh air for the neighborhood. The Big Greek Cafe holds my heart for best carryout but this is a close (and closer in proximity) location. Definitely worth checking out! Pro-tip, if you are looking for carryout call in your order, as others said it's made fresh so there is about a 10-15 minute wait time.
