It is hard to find good Greek food let alone any Greek food around here. The main store is in Arlington which is not far, but wouldn't drive there just to have dinner. So I was thrilled when they opened a satellite restaurant right near me. Have eaten both in the restaurant and had food delivered. People are super nice, and the food is always delicious. Best Greek food in Dutchess County!! The whole vibe is family style, and the indoor seating is very casual. I've gotten the lamb shank, the gyros, the salad, the soups, the calamari and octopus and so far nothing has disappointed me. Their portions are HUGE. The salad will fill you up !! This is my new go-to spot in the area for gyros. I've heard so many great things and finally decided to pick up takeout after work for dinner. The restaurant looks really cozy and welcoming on the outsidde with the lights that are up. The food was amazing!! The gyro meat was not as salty as a lot of other places and you get a huge, generous portion. The gyro was served with potato wedges and was STUFFED. The gyro platter came with meat, rice and a Greek salad. We had leftovers for lunch the next day because there was so much food. On my next visit, I may dine in to see what the dining experience is like but I was very pleased. read more

We were on our way back from a week long vacation in the Catskill area and wanted a place to eat on our way back to NYC. We checked on Google for restaurants near the route we were taking and up came Athena Gyro. Since we are still in the Covid times, called to check if they had indoor dining which they did. Got there just after noon, perfect time for lunch. There were already several occupied tables as well as more seating outside. As we waited for our orders, there were 5 of us, it got pretty busy as more and more patrons arrived. We order grilled octopus, hummus and the fried zucchini for appetizers. The octopus was cooked perfectly. The hummus came with toasted pita bread sliced in triangles. The fried zucchini was served with garlic mash potatoes. All were good tasting. I ordered the broiled salmon with french fries and sauteed spinach. All entrees came with a huge Greek salad with tons of fresh greens, green peppers, onions with a light delicious dressing. When my entree arrived I was already getting full but I pushed on. The salmon was broiled nicely, a bit salty but tasty. The fries were very nice and crunchy, more like steak fries. We loved everything, kudos to the chef. The service was fantastic, welcoming when we entered through the front door. All of the staff had smiles whenever we made eye contact. They always checked in with us to make sure we were beyond satisfaction. Just before getting our bill, manager (I assume) asked if we would like any sweets to finish our meal. We were all full but I love rice pudding so I asked for an order to go. To my surprise, they threw that in complementary. The rice pudding was delicious, very creamy and not overly sweet. Our faves are the small Greek salad with gyro meat (it's giant), spanakopita, tirokafteri (spicy feta dip), gyro in pita, moussaka, and of course the cheesecake baklava. The list of delicious items could go on and on, but these are many time over reorders. The staff is so friendly and the owner is always there to ask how things are. Best pita I've ever had!!!! The 4 dip platter was so yum- my favorite was spicy feta dip. Spanakopita was pretty good, a little bit heavy on the dill flavor and not as crisp as I like but definitely yum. I had the chicken Souvlaki, huuuuuuge portion. Athena Gyro is one of those places where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts - which is pretty impressive since the parts are already great. They do just about everything right, particularly when it comes to the service and the food. Note that the word "homemade" appears prominently and frequently on the menu. I decided to take advantage of that by starting with their lentil soup, which is in a tomato base with fresh vegetables. It was delicious. It was also accompanied by two whole, freshly made, quartered pitas, which were great for dipping into the soup or just eating plain. I was equally impressed with my gyro. When it was served, I could not see the meat because it was hidden by large amounts of fresh lettuce and red onion. When I finally got past those, I could see there was also a large amount of the meat. I didn't want to put it down once I started, partly because it was so good, but also because I was afraid all the ingredients would tumble out, it was so full. The employees really care about their customers. I was served and greeted by at least 4 individuals, including the owner. My water glass was never allowed to go under half-full, and my food came out very quickly. I can remember, many years ago, when this building was a pizzeria. EAT HERE! Seriously, the first time in months we have been blown over by amazing food. The octopus was so tender it could be cut by a fork. The dolmades were well seasoned and tasty without the need for the awesome tzatziki which our son finished off with a spoon, and which they gave us an extra serving to go. The pitas were fluffy instead of dry and chewy. The lamb souvlaki was perfectly marinated and cooked--nothing chewy or grisly. The saganaki was more fondue-like than I'm used to (having grown up in Chicago), but that too was stopped up with gusto. 2, then 3 coffees, as we were in heaven. Plus 2 glasses of retsina. $75 before tip. This was not only our best meal out in months, but possibly the best Greek food we've had since our honeymoon on the QEII with 2 stops in Greece. This used to be our go to place for Greek food. This last time however, was very disappointing. We ordered takeout and when I went to pick it up there was a sign saying there would be a 3.99% upcharge to use a credit card. Really? When in this time of covid where using a credit card is safer than using cash? What ever happened to the cost of doing business? Why not charge us another 3% to cover your lease or utilities? Unfortunately, that was just the beginning. The food just wasn't very good. My wife's tomato was mealy and not good. My pita tasted very odd. I think it may have been moldy but didn't see any mold. At any rate it was not edible. The gyro may was OK but nothing to write home about. I wanted to send dinner to the medical staff at a hospital where a friend works in the ED. She and the rest of the staff are working with COVID-19 patients and need a quick and healthy bit of food while working the night shift. They have eaten way too much pizza over the last few weeks so I went searching for an alternative. It didn't hurt that I was craving pita and tzatziki when I fired up Yelp. I am in the Boston area and the hospital is in Westchester, so I was out of my element. I found Athena's Gyro on Monday and gave them a call to explain the situation. I didnt realize the distance from restaurant to hospital. Although the hospital is far from the restaurant, George was amazing on the phone, and said yes to taking the delivery. He helped me with my order and I requested chicken and lamb souvlaki, rice, Greek salad, tzatziki and pita. The food was delivered last night and got rave reviews!
