First off, the staff is so friendly and even though we brought our little one, they made her feel so comfortable and welcomed. The food - yes, it is on the pricier side, but the quality you get makes it well worth it. We ordered the halibut, spiced maitake, and pork. Our favorite was spiced maitake. Oh my goodness... the way they layer the flavors is insane. When you eat it separately, each of the ingredients burst with flavor. Then when you eat it all together, another umami bomb appears. Incredible. The pork, it does not look like your average pork. They present it in a way that looks like medium rare steak. My husband is not a fan of pork and he says this dish has changed his perspective. Truly, the smokiness of the pork paired with the sauce and mushrooms works harmoniously. Atoma was such a great experience! My boyfriend and I have been excited for months to try atoma while we came to visit Seattle. When you first walk up, the restaurant is in a renovated house which gives it such a cozy and unique vibe to the seating area. We were immediately sat to where we can see the owner/chef preparing each plate to be sent out and their bar area was immaculate! Their liquor and wine menu were very extensive and amazing to flip through. Every aspect to detail at the restaurant was made with intention and love. Dillon was our server and he is very knowledgeable on all things Atoma, including the food and the spirits in their selection. He and Oscar, the wine director, gave us some amazing recommendations as what to do in the area along with a postcard of places that are their favorite hang outs outside of work. Lastly, the food was so amazing and the portion sizes were perfect for the two of us! My favorite dishes were the asparagus, scallops and the maitake mushroom in a shawarma style spice. Every dish was innovative and inspiring for us! We can see why they have all the accolades they've received and can definitely win a Michelin Star with the overall food and experience. We celebrated my husband's birthday there last night and enjoyed our meal -- which was good and the most expensive meal we've had in Seattle. We ordered 3 appetizers, a salad, and the duck entree intended for two. The duck entree was $130 and had 2 different presentations-- duck confit pot pie which was delicious and a large tray of slided duck which was ok. We were there for 2 hours at which point we had just paid the bill and were enjoying the last sips of our drinks when the hostess approached us to ask us to leave as they needed the table for others. After spending $300 (with tip) to be immediately asked to leave is extremely bad service and en expected from a fine dining experience. It left a very sour taste. read more

Upon being seated, I was shown the drink menu and the host gave me a birthday card signed by all the staff. That was so nice! The food menu is short but high quality, so decisions are easy! We got the rosette cookies, dungeness crab, and mighty duck with gem lettuce on the side. The rosette cookies taste like a fancy onion ring. They're the perfect amuse-bouche! The dungeness crab is a crab salad with noodles. The crab was tender and flavorful, and even my partner, who doesnt typically like seafood enjoyed it. We split the mighty duck, which came with a breast, a leg, and a chicore salad. The breast tasted a little too iron-y for me but my partner liked it. I liked the leg more, which tasted almost like a tender roast beef. Would be happy to split it again! I wish there was more of the jelly to go with the breast. The salad was nice to break up the flavor and texture of the duck. For dessert, we had the baked alaska. It lacked the contrast of temperatures that I'd expect for this dish but it still tasted great. There was also an amuse-bouche of a stroopwaffel, which was so tasty! For drinks, my favorite was the whiskey highball with honey and garlic. I loved the complexity of flavors! I should've ordered a glass of red wine to go with the duck, but I got distracted by all the hand drawn art in the cocktail menu (a good problem)! Overall, I would give this restaurant 4.5 stars. This was our second visit to Atoma. Since reservations were booked weeks out, we tried our luck as walk-ins on a Wednesday evening and managed to grab seats at the bar just before the restaurant filled up. The menu featured updated winter dishes. My favorite was the "Winter Luxury" (grilled squash). It had a chili oil dressing with a hint of honey sweetness and a great crunch from crispy garlic. The creamy cheese sauce added a nice layer of flavor, and the pickled onions provided a refreshing contrast. Another highlight was the Spiced Maitake, which came with bread. The grilled mushrooms were buttery with a nice char, and I loved the nutty flavor from the sesame oil. The sauce was perfect. First timer! We tried a variety of dishes and each of them were a hit. I think the two entrees (maitake shawarma situation and pork collar) were the two stand out dishes from our meal. The combo of flavors were absolutely chefs kiss. My husband usually says the vegetarian dishes I get are mediocre but he said this was outstanding. We enjoyed the different flavor profiles of each dish were all different. Overall a delicious meal and while portions may look smaller, we were both very full at the end. Pricing is on the higher side and would say to expect to pay 80-90$ a person pre drinks pre tip for a "full" meal. I had a reservation at Atoma this evening and was genuinely looking forward to it. It would have been our first time. I started feeling very unwell and called the night before to ask whether to reschedule. To be clear: the cancellation policy was disclosed and I have no issue with the existence of the fee. My issue is how it was handled. I left a voicemail. About 20 minutes later I got a callback with no message. I called back, said I'd missed them, and that I'd follow up by email. By the time I opened my inbox, Atoma had already canceled my reservation and charged the $100 fee, before we ever actually spoke. I'd reached out specifically to have a conversation about options, and got a charge instead of a reply. My follow-up email has gone unanswered. The next morning, my time slot was already gone on OpenTable. They'd rebooked the table. So they collected my $100 and resold the seats. A cancellation fee exists to cover a loss. When the table is immediately resold, there's no loss to cover, which tells me the refusal to even pick up a conversation wasn't about protecting the business. It was about collecting twice. A restaurant is entitled to enforce its policy. But there's a difference between enforcing a policy and processing a charge on a customer who is actively trying to reach you, without a single word in response. No callback message, no email, nothing. That's a choice about how you treat people, and it's the reason I won't be back. Reading the owner's defensive replies to other critical reviews only confirmed the impression. read more

Crab toast had a briny sea taste - in a good way - balanced by the shiso earthy taste, I just wished the cut off the bread crust to soften the texture for my weak jar lol. Grilled cucumber and spot prawns are also packed with flavor and great fun to eat. I preferred the mushroom main to the fish one, only because the flavors are bolder and more interesting but nothing wrong with the cod. Icecream wraps it up nicely. Wow- had to book a month out for a reasonable dinner time on a Friday and boy was it worth the wait. They have a $40 cork fee for a 750ml bottle of wine and we took advantage of it. It wasn't amateur hour, so we brought it chilled, but they would do it for you. Let's talk dishes. Crumpets/ bread service is a must. There's 2 per order and too much butter. We also split the crab salad and Kanpachi between the 4 of us. For mains we did halibut, duck and pork collar. Everything was transcendental. The real star of the show? The cookie. Service was above and beyond. Vanessa did an excellent overview of the menu. The real MVP of the night was the sommelier, Amish. I heard so many great things about Atoma and was happy to see that reservations were not too difficult to get ahold of during my visit. The restaurant is situated in a renovated house, so it's easy to drive by. I opted for an indoor dining service, but on a nice balmy summer evening, I imagine the outdoor dining scene must be amazing. Our server, Evan, welcomed us and walked us through the menu, taking care to point out the items that were not nut-free as I have an allergy. We decided to start with some rosette cookies ($7 ea) as I saw most people order them, as well as a radish cake ($9). The rosette cookies were light and crispy and reminded me of Malaysian kuih loyang, but with a savory twist. I particularly enjoyed the caramelized onion jam and farmer's cheese which had a very strong goat milk flavor hidden within the cookies. The radish cake was quite pretty too, and when I read geoduck in the menu description, I assumed there would be geoduck in the batter, like an homage to the New England clam cakes. However, I barely tasted any geoduck, which was a little disappointing, though the pickled radish made for a lovely refreshing palate cleanser. We also opted for the spot prawns ($23) and grilled cucumbers ($18) for our small plates. The spot prawns were served with an almond milk nage, so I unfortunately was unable to try that, but my dining companions told me the prawns were sweet and firm, and the whole dish had an aroma of fermented black beans, which I found interesting. The grilled cucumbers were my favorite bite of the night. I expected the sumac yogurt sauce, as described in the menu, to lean Mediterranean, but the salad was a delightful surprise to my taste buds. I loved how sweet and smoky the caramelized cucumbers were, and the ground pepitas from the salsa macha really complemented those flavors with their inherent nuttiness. The gentle heat of the salsa macha was also balanced with the creaminess of the sumac yogurt and mint, resulting in an unforgettable salad. Evan did not steer us wrong with this recommendation, and I could have happily eaten a second order of this salad without hesitation. We also ordered the pork collar ($44) and black cod ($45) to share, and the entrées were, mercifully, much larger than the appetizers. I really enjoyed the pork collar but it was a mixed review at my table as some thought the collar was simply too fatty. I, on the other hand, love a fatty cut of meat and thought the flavor was spot-on. The apricot sauce was also the perfect balance of sweet and tart. The black cod was serviceable-- I wasn't the hugest fan of the artichoke barigoule as it felt too heavy paired with the leek emulsion. The parmesan shards were a nice touch of umami for an otherwise bland dish. For dessert, we decided on the tayberry sorbet ($9) and the seasonal mille-feuille ($16), which also featured tayberry and elderflower. The latter was particularly memorable as the crispy layers of puff pastry yielded to the fork and uncovered a sea of creamy elderflower pastry cream and tart tayberry jam. I wasn't really sure where the salsify came into play, but it was definitely my second favorite bite of the evening. Overall, the service was impeccable and the food was incredible (for the most part). While most of the dishes we ordered were a little small in portion size, I felt we left our meal feeling satiated. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy. We came in 20 minutes before our reservation time and they were able to seat us! I got the missing miraflores and it did remind me of Peru. We started with the Rosetta cookie and radish cake. Both were so flavorful and crunchy. Then we got the crab, it came with their house made toast. Our table wasn't quite ready when we arrived but we could sit in the porch area and order a cocktail while we waited for our table. The cocktail menu was quite fun, though on the high price end even for Seattle. They did have a small section of mini cocktails so we tried the bees knees and the espresso drink. The bees knees was a stand out! The house atmosphere as cosy and comfy, they fit a lot of tables in there, but it never felt crowded. We ordered lots of bites to share throughout the evening. The rosette cookie with onion and jam and farmers cheese was excellent, make sure you get one for each person, you won't want to share! Beef tartare was tender with some really flavorful chips on top and the pork entree was great as well. We did try the famous baked Alaska, though I was a little skeptical of the cheddar ice cream included in it, but it as very tasty, such a treat. Cute place in the heart of Wallingford. It's small- you have probably driven past it 100 times without realizing it. It's a historic home that was converted into a restaurant. In sum, this is an upscale tiny plates place. Food was great, dishes were quite small, but prepared very well. Love the rosette cookies, radish cakes, and black cod, and kanpachi. They were also able to accommodate my friend who doesn't eat mayo by swapping out some ingredients for the radish cake, which was really nice! Atoma was decidedly a mixed bag - some things were great, and some were disappointing. The ambiance was lovely, the service attentive and smart, the sound-proofing allowed for easy conversation -- but the food was wildly inconsistent. The "Missing Miraflores" was a truly delicious pisco sour. The BTG albarino was a good white, but the price for that glass of wine was comparable to the cost of a bottle at retail. The radish cake with geoduck was scrumptious. The much vaunted rosette cookie was a fancy implementation, with a farmer's cheese filling -- but unlike some other diners, I didn't find it special. The Jerusalem artichoke was ok, but again not special. The pork collar was delicious, but the accompanying sweet potato (I think that's what it was) looked fabulous, but wasn't particularly interesting or flavorful. The crumpets were highly recommended -- but tasted like whole wheat English muffins of indifferent character. The glazed maitake mushroom entrée was ok, but again not special, with the sauce complex but not refined, overpowering the mushroom flavor. The baked Alaska was good. In general, I would describe the food as fancy and elegant, with a great deal of attention paid to appearance and plating -- but the quality -- the taste and the subtlety of flavors and sophistication of blending of tastes one expects from a fancy restaurant -- just wasn't up to snuff. At these prices and this reputation, I expect the food to be innovative, interesting, refined and delicious, the best of farm-to-table fare. I found some of the meal met that standard, but there was also a substantial fraction of the dishes that were overly contrived, where the taste didn't measure up to the appearance or pretense. In other words, the meal was a disappointment. I've had some great meals before - Central in Lima, Sushi Kashiba, the Herb Farm, the Willows Inn. This meal wasn't in that league, not even close. So despite the great reviews in publications like the New York Times, Eater, Seattle Met, Esquire, etc., I largely agree with Bethany Jean Clement's recent review in the Seattle Times "But Atoma is not always very good." read more

Tonight, we had the good fortune of dining at Atoma. The experience was exquisite, one of the best meals I have had in Seattle (I've live here twenty-one years). Ill detail the experience below but want to warn against the complaints I observed on Yelp. The space is small and intimate and there actually aren't any "bad seats." Also, the pacing is very intentional, and it is quite well done. The service was great. As soon as we walked in, we were offered a coat check (rare to have that, but lovely). The server was very friendly and knowledgeable. We were able to get pretty specific advice and insights into dishes and how to best navigate their menu. Throughout the meal, we were given a few extra bites to accentuate and enhance our experience (greatly appreciated). We decided to order a variety of items off their menu and to also do the drink pairings. We highly recommend the drink pairing. It began with a cocktail (a white negroni) and then each series of dishes (in some cases, each plate) is paired with a glass of wine. There is also an ending cocktail as you prepare for dessert (an espresso martini). The bartender visited us for each pour to introduce the wine and to explain how and why it accents the dish we were about to eat (amazing). As long as this review is, I have to comment on the food as well. Every dish was so well done. There were no weak links, no missteps. I was amazed by how subtle and nuanced the flavors were. Everything was plated beautifully and incredibly well curated. The flavors are balanced and deftly executed. They don't just rely on "seasoning" as many chefs do---they are really working with flavor nuances and affinities. Some highlights: -The Rosette Cookie: We felt obliged to try it because it is a hallmark of their menu. We were not disappointed. I was impressed with the brightness of the flavors. The farmer's cheese is a perfect balance to the pastry and the onion jam. -The Radish Cake: Another beautiful dish. The geoduck and radish appear as aesthetic elements thinly sliced and delicately stacked on top of the 'cake.' But all the elements meld together in a perfect flavor melody. -The Crab Toast: I could eat this daily. Forever. It was so light, bright, and well balanced. -The Beef Tartare: This is the best tartare I've ever had. I loved the presentation: tom pomme chips (chips with a tomato dust) on top of the tartare. It was so, so good. Probably the best dish of the night. -Black Cod: More delicate and liter than many of the other dishes. Subtly beautiful. The cod skin was crisp and tasty. The mushrooms were a great addition. -The Duck: The breast was so tender it almost felt like pate. The duck leg doma was very unique, unlike any duck preparation I've tasted before. This was all accented by the wine we were served. -For dessert we had the Baked Alaska and also a coffee and cream de cajeta ice cream. Both were wonderful. The baked Alaska in particular was impressive. They pair an apple cake with a cheddar ice cream (brilliant). I do (and don't) apologize for the length of this Yelp review. Great service. Cocktail menu felt like fall and not spring but drinks were still wonderful. Everything we had was delicious. Had a beautifully cooked duck entree. The current version of the baked Alaska is my fave of the 3 I've tried. Really enjoyed the broccoli dish. Current kampachi wasn't my fave. Still not a fan of the lighting. I get what they are after but it's, so, so yellow. read more

We booked a dinner to celebrate a family member finishing radiation therapy. Unfortunately, the same family member developed severe GI symptoms and we had to cancel. When we called, the owner was dismissive, showed zero empathy for the medical situation, and charged us a $200 cancellation fee anyway. When we tried to explain, we were gaslit and talked down to. No accommodation, no compassion, no professionalism. The owner's public response below claims they offered us alternatives -- transferring the reservation. This did not happen. None of these options were presented during our call. We would have gladly explored alternatives. Instead, we were told the fee would be charged regardless, and the conversation was condescending and dismissive. Misrepresenting a private interaction in a public forum is not a good look. And based on other reviews here -- including guests denied cancellations during dangerous weather conditions -- this is clearly a pattern, not a one-off.
