I'll be the first to admit... Monday through Friday, I'm a Starbucks guy. I drive through, get my fix and head to work. It's a means to an end. On the weekend I want to enjoy great coffee, service, atmosphere and the food. Atomic Coffee more then scratches my itch. The line is long but moves fast. The staff is friendly. Plenty of coffee, smoothie and food options. I'm a Nitro Cold Brew fan... black, no sweetener, AKA "Sasquatch" style. My wife loves the Lavender Latte and my daughter never says no to a orange smoothie. Good pastries too but I highly recommend the Sausage, Egg and Cheese Biscuit and add a Black Bean Patty if you're feeling dangerous... you won't be disappointed. The biscuits are flakey on the outside but moist and the Black Bean Patty puts it all together. Fresh and delicious! read more

This place has a great atmosphere for grabbing a coffee and catching up with friends, but I wouldn't suggest studying/working here because the music is always very loud. I typically get the house coffee, but the smoothies and juices are good too. If order a coffee to sit in house you get free refills so keep that in mind. I was disappointed by the lack of flavor in some of the lattes, but hey that's just me. There's plenty of seating inside in addition to a few tables outside. WAKE UP ROYAL OAK! I used to frequent this spot often when it was still a Caribou. I was upset to see it close along side Incognito being that they were both (in my opinion) true staples of this city. What made it even worse was that this space sat vacant right in the heart of downtown Royal Oak. I had no clue what they were going to replace it with. I dreaded that it would be another shitty chain restaurant, or something obnoxious like the giant Buffalo Wild Wings that has unfortunately moved in. Can we please return these cold mediocre chicken wings and just get another bookstore please? With that being said... I'm extremely happy it was replaced by a good company such as Atomic Coffee. The managers/owners clearly know what they're doing. This shop is a great addition as it actually contributes to the progressive culture that Royal Oak has always been known for. The coffee is good. The atmosphere is chill. The service is proper. I'm glad Atomic Coffee is in town and hope it decides to stay a while. read more

Atomic Coffee honestly has the best lattes, nitro, iced coffee, anything I can possibly find in the Detroit area. I almost feel guilty saying that, like I'm cheating on my other regular cafes, but it's true. I love their rose cardamom latte the best, it's great both hot and iced. The space has this really amazing sunken living room sort of area to work in that dampens sound a bit, which is good, because this place can get pretty loud when lots of people are there. It's a great place to go and work with other people since there's ample space and tables. I'm only knocking off one star because of their croissants - for the price, I'd expect them to be a little fresher, but they tasted sort of like grocery store ones. Even my starbucks one was better. Came here with my family and was in the mood for a smoothie. My cousins and I really enjoyed our smoothies. 4.5 Stars This is probably the best place in the metro detroit area to study or get work done. As someone burdened with studying in the area full time for three months, I've tried every where. Most places aren't open into the evening and I would have to concede to a 24-hr Tim Horton's, but Atomic Coffee offered a great space for studying with good drink options. The layout is nice for getting work done. Free wifi. There are many tables that vary in size from 1 or 2 person to much larger. There are outlets accessible at nearly every table (a seemingly rare factor in a study spot). They also have a nice little area with couches and comfy chairs that would serve as a good meeting place for a larger group. The noise level is never too loud (or at least can be covered up with headphones). I became a regular here for these reasons. And they have a frequent customer coupon where you can earn free beverages after purchasing a certain amount of drinks. Okay on to the drinks. I'm admittedly sort of a coffee snob and this place definitely does not disappoint. You can't really go wrong with their house blends, depending on your roast preferences. They come in a standard coffee cup but you get one refill in your time there. The flavors are rich and taste like they were brewed like a small coffee shop should brew coffee. I've also tried the lavender latte, which was okay. It didn't have enough of an espresso flavor that I would have liked, and was instead stronger on the lavender flavor. It was mildly sweet (mostly by the honey). The nitro cold brew is pretty good. It's smooth and highly caffeinated if that's what you need to keep you going. Overall, a great study or work place with a solid coffee drink options and inviting atmosphere. read more

Favorite coffee place around (simply due to the coffee), however, I can't give it 5 stars due to the attitude of some of the employees. I am always extremely kind and tip every time I go (which is often), and there are 2 staff members in particular there that act like me ordering coffee is such an inconvenience for them... Another thing I find ridiculous is the fact that I am paying good money for a latte, but the same 2 employees refuse to make a latte that is half whole milk/half skim. I really don't think it's too much to ask. Overall, they have some of the best coffee drinks around, but if some of the staff members do not change their poor attitude, we will not be frequenting Atomic for much longer. read more

I loveeeeee this place! Everything I've tried I have loved. Seriously even things I thought I would hate. It's the best coffee shop I have ever tried. I always get the lavender latte iced (light ice) and it's amazing. I also like to get the seafoam juice but take out the carrot and celery and just add extra apple and ginger and it's the best. Everyone needs to try this place. The atmosphere makes the place even more amazing. There are plenty of study spots and outlets. Stumbled on this place after a movie at the Royal Oak Imagine. The atmosphere was really cool. It almost felt like I was in a university library because of all the younger people with their computers. The ambiance is very mature though. Not a professional work environment! With some staff members that aren't very pleasant or friendly. I use to come here very frequently and always tipped for my coffees. Now working remotely I look for areas in the Royal Oak area that are nice to work at. Today my co-worker and I decided to try out Atomic. I ordered a large coffee and got half foam so I politely asked one of the staff members if they could remake it. What's the point of getting large if half of its foam, right? He seemed extremely irritated with me and said he would drop it off at my table when he was done. No problem, when he came over we asked him if he could shut the window halfway. Our papers were blowing everywhere and there weren't many other spots to sit. His response was " No because it's a nice day" and abruptly walks away. At this point, we felt a little uncomfortable but we moved to a table area on the inside. As we get started working were approached again and told we have to move 6 ft from one another? Ok, how are we supposed to work? We then say, well we would have sat at the other table(Where 6ft wouldn't have been an issue), but its cold and the wind is blowing and you won't accommodate us. The assistant manager (the one who was rude entire time) pretty much tells us it's too bad and when I say we won't be back he pretty much could care less. From a business standpoint, I recommend to the owner to get more welcoming employees not ppl who feel they need to prove something and be rude to guests. That's not how businesses thrive. Customer service is everything and my experience made me feel unwelcomed and completely unable to work! read more

Finally checked this place out and I wasn't disappointed. The space is wonderful I can really see myself hunkering down there and getting a lot done. It is modern yet inviting. Now this was my second time trying Nitro brew coffee and the first time I found it undrinkable even though I'm a black coffee drinker on the regs, this was a new taste. So I wised up at Atomic and ordered the Nitro Brew called "grizzly bear" I believe ... It had some chocolate and honey and spices added to it. It was delicious and not too heavy on the sweetener. I would definitely order it again. The great thing about it was that they don't add ice either so you're getting a lot of coffee for your dollar. I also want to try the Lavender Latte in the future. Now the real star of the show was the blueberry cream cheese croissant. Perfection- absolutely splurge and get it! The service was friendly, prompt, and helpful. Some of the reviews on here are hilarious. You have one dude talking about how the coffee beans they use are garbage, then goes on a rant about "coffee culture", and machinery used in coffee shops. Okay dude...you sound insane. Then another person complaining that there aren't enough couches. Uhhhh...it's not 1994 and you're not on the set of "Friends". Here's the breakdown. The interior is very sleek, and modern. It reminds me a bit of something I'd see in A Clockwork Orange, and I'd be damned if it wouldn't bring a tear to Stanley Kubricks eye. The coffee: very good. I've had the nitro brewed iced coffee. It had me buzzing like a bee. I also had the iced mocha. Smooth, and not overly sweet. The grub: I had the Italian. Very good. The bread was soft n squishy. My lady got the portobello sandwich. It was even better than mine. My son had a brownie. It was very moist and flavorful. I think they get their baked goods delivered daily from pinwheel. The service: dude working register obviously didn't have the system down, but they've only been open a week. So that didn't bother me at all. The staff was very friendly and very energetic (I would be too, being around all that coffee). Overall: everything is locally sourced from the meats, coffee beans, and baked goods. Supporting locally produced goods is good for the local economy. Not to mention, everything I've tasted here so far has been delicious. The interior is way more aesthetically pleasing than a Starbucks, and even better than bean and leaf, and the office (garage sale furniture!?). But if you really dig Mumford and Sons, outdated decor, and overpriced swill...go to Starbucks. Stopped in for a chai latte after having breakfast elsewhere. The first thing I noticed was how stark and uninviting it seemed - all whites, blacks & greys and hard surfaces. The ceiling was open & raised which made for poor acoustics, it was very loud and echo-ee (not a word I'm sure), weird vibe for a coffee shop where you usually want people to feel comfortable. There's a large (I mean large) glass or plastic ball hanging over one section, it made me feel like I was in a disco. Service was super slow - laughably so - my friends and I couldn't believe how long one drink took, people were piling up waiting for their orders and then we were surprised at how small a 'medium' was. Finally - it wasn't very good, my friend tossed his drink after finishing half. So - not a fan of much there, left there and went and got a chai at Goldfish Tea. read more

Honestly the best latte I've ever had. Normally, I need to have a little something sweet with my lattes. But the latte at Atomic was so smooth, I could drink it straight. So delicious. We went every single day that we were in town, and bought a ton of their house blend beans to go. Service is pretty.. slow.. but friendly. I've been here a few times, various times throughout the day. One time I came in at 0700 on Saturday and ordered an oatmeal, but the cook wasn't on shift yet, so I waited. Boy was it worth it! It's the perfect oatmeal to hit my mouth, and I thought I made awesome oatmeal!! I order a cup of medium roast black coffee, it was ok! Felt like I was the only one there, but as soon as 0900 came around, this place was about to explode into a dance party. Sometimes, this place can be overwhelming with people who go in and park for numerous hours, me for instance, and only buy a black coffee while lavishing on high-speed internet. Every now and then I go up to the counter and buy a cookie to supplement the resources I've used at the place - warm fire place, electricity for my laptop, and never ending wifi. At times, I feel like this place should charge for the table rather than a cup of medium roast java. It would probably weed out all the people who wouldn't be keen on paying for a flat surface to study. Businesses have this method implemented in the UK and I think in Turkey. Google it! Although the place is cozy, the little area below entrance level can be a bit cold. You can feel the cold draft coming from the window. The place lacks a lot of seating when the entire Royal Oak High School population enters the door, but people find ways to share the space. I've seen prospects enter then leave due to lack of chairs or tables. I would suggest people sharing with strangers even on those two-person table/booth things. I've been coming here to study for a few months now and have been in love since the first time I was here. it's a beautiful place. there's like 3 different styles in one, the front tables and counter all covered in white subway tile, the area with the fire is dark and cozy, and the sunken front area is the best. it's hard to get one of the few lower level tables but so worth it for the beautiful view of the street. when it's warm outside they open the entire glass front and it's so comfortable and fresh. decided to finally review because I ordered food finally! I never really see anyone order food, but clearly not because it's bad. I got the breakfast burrito and it was really good. kitchen closes at 3, so get your food early! read more

Love, love, love. Great service, it was personal and quick. The food and beverage quality even matches the customer service. The atmosphere is perfect for studying, working, or socializing. My only critique is that I did not know to pick up my coffee at the end of the counter when I was eating in. Everything is so white... First thing I thought of when I walked in was this places looks like someone put a coffee shop in an old school recovery wing of a word war 2 hospital. But the drinks are pretty good... I ordered the a Cappuccino and a mango smoothie for my wife. The smoothie hit the spot. Definitely refreshing on a hot day. A place that is fully loaded with everything you need to study for long periods of time - healthy food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, snacks, and great coffee, tea, and other great drinks available. The best thing about this place is the layout. Tons of outlets, plenty of individual seating, group seating, comfy seating, so many choices! The cafe is also awesomely divided into three different spaces that makes it look so chic. I'd go back for the great layout of the place. Reminds me of San Francisco cafes. Wonderful place to get some work done. I should also note, the internet is fantastically fast! The issue is the parking - you have to pay for it, unless you want to park far away - hopefully finding one of the few streets that have free parking in RO. It feels wrong for me to give Atomic Coffee a docked star for the situation, but it makes for a less accessible coffee shop that I would love to frequent more if it wasn't so complicated to get to. Friday 8/31 at around 7 pm I went to the counter to order my coffee like I normally do. The couple in front of us ordered their coffee with a polite and pleasant attitude from the cashier, however when I went to order and asked what ingredients were in some of the cold brew options, I was spoken to with a condescending and rude tone. He spoke quickly and at a low volume, and lacked any sense of wanting to help. My sister ordered her drink and when I asked for light ice, he disregarded my request and pretended to acknowledge me so that I would continue with my order. I then ordered my drink with light ice, and again he shrugged and did nothing on the register as before. Knowing that he didn't make any notion of putting in light ice for our order, I stayed next to the counter to make sure my order was followed. As expected, my drink was made filled to the brim with ice but the most frustrating part was the fact that the cashier I ordered from was watching my drink being made wrong, and looked up at me to see if I was watching. So I interrupted the woman who was making my drink and reminded her I asked for light ice, so she gladly fixed my order. What upset me even more was the cashier watching me interrupt her, KNOWING that I had ordered light ice and intentionally letting her make it wrong. And even worse, rudely staring at me as if he was looking down on me. Truly, I could care less about having ice or someone explaining drink descriptions on the menu. It's a first world problem. What matters to me is the change in attitude I witnessed from the Caucasian people ordering in front of me, to my sister and I (who are brown). I genuinely felt as if he didn't want to give me light ice because of whatever stereotypes he thinks of me. It's not right and it has completely changed my outlook on atomic coffee. I no longer feel comfortable studying here or giving my business to this establishment. If you have poor customer service skills, that's one issue. But to clearly change your attitude between races in unacceptable. read more

This place is such a great addition to Royal Oak, and much needed. The atmosphere from the second you walk in is so hip and lively. The layout is great, and the decor is a blend of retro meets modern. There is ample seating and is a great place to get some light work done. Floor to ceiling windows gives it an abundance of natural light as well. The coffee is very good, and they offer a variety of bakery items, fruit drinks, breakfast items, and snacks. I would say it's all reasonably priced compared with other coffee joints. The staff is energetic and friendly. Patio seating is also available. One thing is that the wifi can get a little choppy so hopefully that gets resolved soon. Definitely coming here more often to get studying done since they have great hours! read more

Really rad interior. Like, a seriously beautiful place. BUT, the coffee is not good. Borderline bad. Actually, my drip coffee WAS bad, my dude's nitro-cold brew was okay. I am not a huge fan of nitro coffee much anyways, full disclosure. I see what they are trying to do, and they've got the look. Sleek, trendy, minimalist interior design. But the quality of what they are actually serving is low. And the people working don't really seem to know what's going on either. I asked, "What kind of coffee do you serve?" i.e. who roasts what you are serving? (They do, I realized later) and was told after a few moments of what seemed to be intense inner-confusion, "Dark roast or medium roast". So, that was probably my fault for not being more clear. But, c'mon! I don't go to Royal Oak often, so I don't know how much of a repeat customer I will be. BUT, if it was an actually decent cup of coffee, I would absolutely go out of my way to patronize Atomic. Unfortunately, that's not the case. WHY is it that there is hardly any good coffee outside of the city? If I am in RO and need coffee, I would honestly prefer Sbux over this. Which makes me the worst, I know. Or, I would drive to Birmingham and go to Commonwealth. I am all about supporting local businesses, I strive to buy local in almost everything that I do, but I'm also not going to throw away my money for something that isn't good. We went here on kind of a whim because it was the only cafe open at the time and I couldn't be happier about it! The cafe was awesome, had some outside seating and the outside walls of the store front also opened up to the nice cool weather we have been having. The decor and atmosphere of the cafe was inviting, I liked the mixture of tables and chairs, couches etc. If I was from the area I could definitely see myself working from the cafe from time to time. The staff was also very kind! They had a great selection of various specialty drinks, coffee, and espresso drinks. Even Affogato which you honestly don't see at many cafe's in South Eastern Michigan. I had ordered a 12oz of the Sumatra Mandheling which was brewed via pour over and it was delicious! My girlfriend had ordered a latte and she also enjoyed it a lot, saying it was one of the best ones she had had in a while. read more
