Amazing atmosphere with great coffee and music. Ordered an iced Mexican mocha which was amazing. Had a kick but not overly spicy. I got a bit hungry later and ordered the turkey sandwich. I took two bites and the turkey tasted like putrid death. I ended up throwing it away. Was expecting at least an average turkey sandwich but the taste was so bad I can't give this place more than 3 stars. ***so the owner reached out with quite possibly the most heartfelt message I've ever gotten from a business. For his sincerity alone, I'm changing this to a 5 star review. The place really is amazing and the coffee superb. I'll give them another shot otherwise and look forward to it. read more

It's always so busy here, making it nearly impossible to find a seat! But it's busy for a good reason. The staff are very friendly and kind, and the atmosphere is lively, making it a perfect place to get some work done. The lavender latte here is my favorite! I'm someone who has had at least one coffee shop near and dear to my heart in every place I've lived, so finding one when I moved to Royal Oak was my first priority. Atomic was the first I tried and I've got to say it's fantastic. They don't have the world's largest selection of drinks but what they have is more than enough and more importantly they do it WELL. My wife considers the Mocha the best she's ever had, the house blend is great, and the lattes and other espressos are very good. The cold brew nitro is an absolute revelation! Atmosphere is a cool mix of modern and retro design. Plenty of seating and outlets. Love this place, imagine I will be coming back numerous times over the coming years. read more

Really nice place sitting on the corner with comfy seats and great ambiance and their coffee with pastries is official. Decent drinks. Usually order a chai latte and it's okay. Have ordered breakfast crossaint sandwiches and seemed overpriced for what you get. Have been here several times and always had a longer wait just to get one drink. And whenever I ordered food, wait was so long that I had enough time to go out to the parking meter to put more change in so that I wouldn't get a parking ticket! What I thought would be no more than a 20 minute wait (what my parking time was), ended up being a total of at least 30 min waiting inside the cafe. I always have had great experiences here. However, the past two times I have been, there has been a barista with long brownish blonde hair that is wavy and I think she has glasses. This barista has the worst attitude I have ever encountered. Not only is she rude to every customer who comes in, but she fully forgot to make my drink one time and never apologized when I nicely asked after 20 minutes if she was making it. If you're looking for good pour overs or good coffee in general this is not the spot. When asking the barista questions about tasting notes of the brew she suggested we were met with blank stares and a not super great attitude. You'd think that, you know, if you work somewhere you would be knowledgeable about the product you're selling or could be resourceful and find an answer. Very underwhelming, hard pass for me. Slap a Starbucks logo on the front door and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. read more

I go to Atomic quite often and never disappointed. It's a nice place to either just chill, sip coffee and get some work done or even grab a quick bite to eat with friends. Even though it is always busy, so far finding a table has never been a problem. They have a nice selection of breakfast menu to choose from, their portions are nice (not too small or too big), their chai tea latte is my favorite! the ambience is chill with nice music playing in the background. On a nice day you you can sit outside as well. More importantly, the location is great as it is so close to home for me. Not to mention their service is also efficient and the people working there are pleasant. One time someone made a mistake with our order but they were apologetic and kind enough to replace the meal with our original order without much delay, on the house! Hands down the best coffee in Royal Oak, but if you plan to sit down, especially on weekends, good luck. This place regularly has a line out the door and it's very hard to find a place to sit. The chairs are also super uncomfortable and the decor needs a little work. The menu also needs more vegan options! But again- the coffee is AMAZING and keeps me coming back. :-) read more

A great place to study and relax. It can get slightly loud, so make sure to bring your earplugs or headphones if you want to focus. It has good food and also great coffee. Prime location as well, in case you wanted to take a study break and walk around for a bit. read more

Pretty cute little coffee shop in Ferndale. Normally super busy with people studying or working. If you can snag a seat it's totally worth waiting. i prefer small coffee shops over chains but the fact that they don't recycle makes me not want to support this business any longer. i'm bummed because the location is convenient and product is good. but the plastic overload and the barista telling me to put my glass pellegrino in the trash is a major turn off. it's 2019 and recycling is definitely offered in the city. get with it read more

This is one of the best coffee shops I've been to and as a coffee shop hopper, I have seen a lot. The ambiance is simple and contemporary but great for studying or meeting with a friend. The coffee is exceptional, in particular the espresso drinks are wonderfully crafted. My favorite thing on the menu are the nitro brews...I cannot find a place with such great nitros anywhere around Chicago. The coffee is pretty good. I only had the brewed coffee, but it was smooth and rich. Will probably try the espresso drinks soon, and I imagine they will be very good. If they start doing pourovers, I'll be here every week. BUT there is one major flaw with this coffee shop - the WiFi doesn't work. I can access anything Google, but everything else gives me DNS errors. And that's on both my laptop and my phone. I was hoping to come here to get work done, but that's just out of the picture now. Once they fix the WiFi, I'll bump this up to 4 stars. It's clear they've got some stuff to work out, so I'll come back in about a month or so. Hopefully they'll have fixed it by then. read more

I like to stop in when I'm grabbing coffee/tea to go, but I don't spend a ton of time here. It seems packed all the time. It's not the cheapest place for coffee around -- e.g. compared to Starbucks -- but the quality and taste are really very good. Service is quick and friendly, too. I had a double espresso. Excellent! Then a pour over of the Sulawesi and took a cold brew for the road. All were fantastic. My guests got a dirty chai as well as the honey vanilla latte which they applauded. Insincere, incompetent and slow. Cute interior but took 7 minutes for the cashier to tell me "I'll be right with you" in a passive aggressive tone while there were two other people behind the counter completely capable of doing what he was doing (starting to brew a pot of coffee). The other girl behind the counter also very unprofessional, rolling her eyes at customers and slamming down a cup behind the counter. I like supporting local but when Starbucks can make a double espresso in 1:30 and it takes more than 5 minutes just to have someone tell me they will be right with me, the choice is simple. LOVE THIS PLACE! I got the pumpkin spice latte often before they stopped it. Wish it would come back---they make their own mix and it tastes just like pumpkin pie. I am new to the area and have been on the lookout for a great coffee shop. Atomic is great. It has a rather bustling/loud vibe as opposed to the calm bookstore/library type of coffee shop. I appreciate this because I usually get more work done with a bit of background noise. Their coffee is excellent and I also love how they have a full menu and it's not terribly overpriced. Bottom line: new cafe working out the kinks, serving poor quality coffee. I will update and reevaluate as the weeks go by and the kinks are worked out -- While being named for coffee, this breakfast and sandwich restaurant isn't showing much attention to quality or trends in coffee culture. In just a ten minute drive north, south or west of Royal Oak a good cup of specialty coffee an be found, even great if you venture into Corktown. I was hoping that Atomic would raise the bar for cafes in town, but was let down by premium prices for mediocre coffee sourced from Coffee Express or Microlots out of Plymouth (can't remember which). My drip coffee was stale and low on flavor and my espresso was an under extracted, behind-the-times full city+. They just opened-- I understand a lackluster barista performance. Espresso takes a lot of work to make well, and I have no problem with a bad or underextracted shot every once and a while, but this is just another cafe with a poorly chosen coffee supplier. I wouldn't expect to see the management cupping coffees for their menu from my first experience, but it would definitely help. All of the equipment is there -- La Marzocco GB5, Mazzer Super Jolly (I would like to see a Robur or similar for SO espresso), v60s... Maybe a little out of date but still great equipment. A little education or even a coffee buyer/barista trainer/lead barista on staff would bring this place to a new level and into competition with Commonweath (which I assume is the goal). Hire someone with specialty coffee experience. The space is comfortable and ample, and the staff are friendly. I'm looking forward to returning after the opening weekend jitters have passed -- hopefully to a much improved cup. read more

Awful! Popped in for quick and a quick breakfast on the go. Ordered a coffee and oatmeal. Waited 5 mins after ordering and still didn't have a coffee. When I asked about it, the rude barista snapped that it had been sitting out so long and nobody claimed it so they had to throw it out. Apparently it was my fault that they hadn't called my name. I got my oatmeal to go in a reasonable amount of time and headed out. When I got home to eat it I discovered a large bowl full of instant oatmeal that wasn't even mixed completely! The bottom of the bowl was uncooked dry oatmeal. Worst $9 I I've spent on breakfast! read more

Stopped in for a hot minute in-between work and home. atmosphere is really nice, very clean appearance and the staff was really helpful and friendly, unfortunately I can only partake in decaf coffee so I can only judge based on that... The decaf was just one step above coney island coffee. (Even getting free refills does not make up for how bad it is) I'm very accustom to Great Lakes, Astro & The Roasting Plant decafs which are very flavorful and bold. I don't think I will be coming back, but it was worth the try. read more

Great coffee. We ordered the Mexican Mocha and Honey Vanilla lattes. Mexican Mocha was the favorite - has a nice spicy kick to it! Seating was completely taken on a Friday afternoon by students.
