Would give this store a higher rating because typically their furniture is reasonably priced but came here on a Saturday at 11am and the sign says "open" but all of the lights are off and the door is closed. There are no hours posted on the window and no explanation for not being open. Called the number and the mailbox is full. Not really sure what's going on here but seems to be a pretty unreliable store. read more

I was searching for just the right dresser and I was hopeful that this shop would have something that worked for me. Their prices were significantly higher than my budget but I had a deadline so was prepared to spend at least $100 more than I wanted to. Still, nothing was right. In the 10+ minutes I browsed I didn't anyone working there - no one to ask if they perhaps had other options in the back. If there was a back. I have purchased several pieces of furniture from Attic Child and I love every piece. The prices are very reasonable and the furniture is "old" but of really good quality. Fred, one of the owners, does a great job at refinishing and painting the furniture. It's definitely worth a trip to Martinez. They have a lot of stuff yet to be refinished. That's where I've found most of my pieces. I was able to have them all custom painted and distressed to my liking. I am absolutely delighted with a refinished highboy dresser I bought at Attic Child. It is a solid wood piece from the late 60's/early 70's that was refinished with a beautiful muted red paint, distressing, and glass knobs, resulting in a one of a kind, exquisite French cottage type piece of furniture. The store is small, but they have lots of good pieces that can be painted any color you like. We found the perfect dresser and matching side tables for a very reasonable price. I bought a 6 drawer dresser here over 7 years ago and it is my favorite piece of furniture. It is beautifully painted white and everything works so well on it. The owner was friendly and delivered it to San Francisco! I paid about $350 which was the same price for an IKEA dresser but this one is a statement piece I'll have forever and all the drawers work. If you want custom painted furniture, especially antiques go see Fred. I have bought pieces he had in the store and I have had him restore pieces. He fixed a 110year old dresser for me and then painted it a gorgeous antique grey and it is stunning! He found the perfect bed frame to match and today I dropped off night stands to complete my set. He is fairly quick and can typically have the pieces done within a few weeks. Extremely reasonable prices. I wish I had a bigger house! read more

I recently was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and have to downsize and sell my house. I have a vintage 3 piece oak dresser set that has been through 3 of my kids and I no longer have room for it. Its also in desperate need of refinishing or painting. I decided to bring in photos and a drawer to Attic Child to see if they would be interested since their store is full of refinished furniture. The man looked at the photos and checked out the drawer and offered me $150 for all 3. I was hoping for a little more but settled on the $150 since I knew I needed to get rid of it as soon as possible. The man showed up at the appointed time and the first thing I noticed was he wreaked of cigarette smoke. It was unbearable. He instantly started picking apart what was wrong with the furniture. If the furniture would have been in excellent condition I probably would have been able to get a lot more for it somewhere else. He told me he could only give me $100 for it and I started crying. It was hard enough letting it go for $150. He has been in the business long enough and should have never made a $150 offer if he didnt think it was worth it. He then offered me $125 and I told him fine and to take it. He stormed out and left the furniture and the horrible smell of cigarettes behind him. Im appalled he would try to take advantage of me like that knowing what kind of situation I was in. Needless to say I wont be doing business at Attic Child ever again. read more

My wife and I searched high and low for quality furniture in the east bay. We visited local furniture stores (ashley, macy's, JC Penny's), all cheap particle board foreign made. Consignment stores are hit or miss, you almost need an insider to get good looking and well made furniture. Craigslist is like shopping online for furniture, you never know what you're going to get unless you see the items in person. My mom has been re-upholstering furniture for the past 30 years, and raised me to learn types of wood, recognize certain traits of craftsmanship. You know the good stuff, solid hardwood, dovetail joints, and the most important thing on a dresser, properly sliding drawers. Lets just say Fred at Attic Child was a pure delight to find. We came here looking for a changing table for our son, and a dresser for me. We found so many other things we liked. I work in real estate and help people move, when people ask for recommendations, I only promote this place. It is worth your time to visit downtown Martinez and see what Attic Child has to offer. read more

Small quaint store located in downtown Martinez. The owners are so sweet and accommodating. They take old "antiques" and turn them into updated pieces that give such personality to your home. We have purchased two pieces, a dresser we use as a side board and a large shabby chic dresser that is perfect for my walk in closet. I love both and you can't beat the price compared to many furniture companies that make new furniture to look old and distressed (cough, cough... potter barn/restoration hardware/etc.) To address the bad review regarding the owners as unappreciative of antiques, many of these furniture pieces are in bad shape, damaged, misses parts and are heading towards the dumps! They give new life to this old furniture that would otherwise be rotting in a landfill. Many pieces are being salvaged, donated or purchased from garage sales according to the owner. He had one woman give him her grandparents old bedroom set and when she returned to the store fell in love with some newly painted and updated furniture and was so shocked that it was the same furniture she had just given away! When it came to be our turn, the female employee completely changed her attitude and was actually fairly cold and rude toward us. Perhaps our age, as we are younger? Who wants cheap Department and chain store furniture when you can get unique quality GORGEOUS pieces at a fraction of the cost at this fabulous treasure of a store! I was just grabbing a coffee and noticed they were open... Stopped in for a quick look-see.... I was absolutely blown away! Attic Child had been catching my eye on craigslist for a few weeks now. I've been searching for a dresser for my baby's nursery (due in less than 4 weeks). I am so glad I went to Attic Child this weekend. Small shop, but super cool. The dresser I got is beautiful, and really good condition for a 1950's piece. I looked at other places with vintage painted furniture, and the insides of the drawers were so old and gross I would never consider putting baby clothes inside them. All the drawers I peered in at AC were in nice condition. I think Fred finds unwanted items, but he makes sure the pieces still have their structural integrity, and he always repairs the drawers so they are fully operable. The quality of his painting work is excellent. I think I am going to have him paint an old hutch I inherited from my grandmother. Highly recommend. As for the person who wrote a negative review because of him painting entire matching bedroom sets and not appreciating antiques... How silly! I'm sure the matching bedroom set is far more attractive after Fred paints it. I think he must truly love and appreciate antiques to breathe new life into them so that they are attractive to a modern audience. Overall, definitely Two Thumbs Up! read more

We had a problem with a delivery to SF that damaged some furniture and he was really prompt with coming back to get it, repair it and redeliver all within several days. My experience with them has been nothing but dreadful! The owner is an old crickety man with little personlity and very bad customer service. I did make a huge mistake by purchasing several pieces from him. All of the pieces I bought broke within a week. Granted, the furniture looks nice at first, but once you bring it home, it breaks. I wouldn't even give this plce zero stars ...... had no choice but to select one. You would be better off going to IKEA, at least they have a refund policy....... TWO THUMBS DOWN!!!!! read more
