We attended a Bourbon and Bites event in the courtyard of Atwaters Restaurant located in the beautiful Herrington Inn & Spa. The courtyard area overlooks the Fox River and the manicured gardens are beautiful. We tried 5 different samplings (Free) of Penelope Bourbons and they offered a few drinks for purchase using Penelope Bourbon. My favorite bourbon was their Toasted . I ordered an Old Fashion and my wife had a Raspberry Bourbon Lemonade. Both drinks were fantastic and had special pricing for the event. They also offered 3 different appetizers off their Bar Menu so we opted for the Filet Mignon Bites Au Poivre which were Peppercorn Encrusted Filet Mignon Bites,Cognac Honey Mustard Sauce and an Arugula Feta salad. We went to dinner at Atwater's, one of my favorite quiet and elegant restaurants in Geneva. My husband and I brought our friends for their first time dining here. Our server was Val who was so delightful and engaging. We started with a delightful walleye ceviche on a blue corn chip for the amuse bouche. Perfect bite. The four of us shared the steamed Prince Edward Island mussels and the artisan charcuterie board as starters. The muscles were a generous portion and the broth was so flavorful. I always love Atwater's charcuterie board. It's has a generous portion of Humboldt Fog cheese, which is one of my favorite cheeses. For dinner, I opted for the roasted butternut bisque and caramelized apple & kale salad. The bisque was smooth and silky and the salad bright, crisp and fresh. Hubby had the blackened swordfish and loved it. My friends had the pork and lamb chop entrées. They really enjoyed their food. I've had the lamb chops before and they're excellent. The food at Atwater's is full of flavor, beautifully presented and delicious. Our server Val surprised us with a little taste of olive oil ice cream for a sweet treat to end the meal. I was so happy that my friends loved this restaurant as much as we do. If you haven't dined at Atwater's, you're missing out on a tasty hidden gem. We came to celebrate my grandma's birthday and it was the perfect spot. It's very small and intimate which was perfect for my grandparents since big crowds and loud venues can be overwhelming. The wait staff was also very patient and helpful. The food was delicious! Our meal started with complementary dinner rolls with butter and a selection of jams. This restaurant is at the Herrington Hotel in Geneva Illinois. The atmosphere is amazing. Big panoramic windows with a courtyard view and the Fox River. I went crazy and had the Filet Mignon and my husband had the pork tenderloin. Both were amazing, but the steak was the best I've ever had. Atwaters is located in the Gorgeous Herrington Inn along the Fox River in Geneva. The dining room has wonderful windows and very comfortable chairs. This is my Mother's favorite restaurant to celebrate birthdays at. In the summer there is outside seating. My most recent meal was a hamburger that was amazing. I was able substitute fresh asparagus for French Fries.The Herrington always has fabulous desserts. Lunch is a great time to eat here and if you are able to,you can linger over coffee and dessert. read more

I loved the elegant vibe of this charming restaurant. I was delighted that it had my favorite California Zin, Turley Kirschenmann, for us to drink with my delicious crab cake appetizer and filet mignon. I asked for a true medium rare filet, but it came medium well. The asparagus was perfectly roasted and the mashed potatoes were the best ever. The server did not charge us for my filet even though my partner ate half of it and we took my half home for another. Very sweet! read more

The food is always great here. More expensive but well worth it for the special occasions. Went here for our 32nd Anniversary. I had the filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly to medium rare. We celebrated another anniversary at Atwater's last Tuesday, with a window view across the Fox River toward the former site of our rehearsal dinner 43 years earlier. Dinner here is always special and our server again this year was Michael, who is well-mannered, helpful and professional in every way. We started with salads, then ordered entrees. My plum-glazed Faroe Island Salmon with Kimchi Jasmine Rice was superb! My husband also enjoyed his Pistachio Crusted Pork Tenderloin. We shared the luscious Chocolate Ganache Cake, which was one of my favorite restaurant desserts to date. It was a perfect start to our three night getaway in Geneva! read more

Went here for Thanksgiving and I must say it was the worst service we have ever had here. My husband and I first had a drink at the bar, which was good. Then we met his family in the restaurant. It went down hill from there. Our bartender was also our waiter so he was not very attentive to us because he was the only bartender in the lobby. For the money we paid for our meals we should have gotten better service. We will not be back and will be going to a different restaurant next Thanksgiving. read more

Atwater's used to be a 5-star restaurant. But now, the service has gone downhill: S--L--O--W service despite the restaurant being only about half-full. Our waitress was also inattentive and unfriendly. We were given misinformation (lack of staff training?) In the past, the staff would bend over backwards to a reasonable request....but not anymore. I hope the management takes these issues seriously and address them, as the restaurant has a magnificent ambiance. read more

What an absolute hidden gem! Tucked away in the beautiful Herrington Inn downtown Geneva, is an elegant, sophisticated, 5-star dining experience. The atmosphere feels like a cross between a regal British castle and a posh country club. But the service is far from stuffy - in fact they are delightful and attend to even the smallest details. Our food was a gastronomic delight that started with an elote amuse-bouche (Wow), followed by crab cakes (YUM) a split Atwater's salad with the most delicious carlemized onion garnish, and Walleye for the main entree (fabulous). Dessert was a decadent chocolate cake with a Chambord butterscotch drizzle (OMG). Even the Tuscan red blend wine and the coffee were delightful. Now back to the service - I didn't identify today as our anniversary when making the reservation nor did I mention to our waiter. However, he must have overheard us toasting each other and didn't want the occasion to go unnoticed so he brought us complimentary chocolate covered strawberries to celebrate. I came here for dinner with a group and we had a wonderful meal! The dining room itself is small and had more of an older style, but I thought it was well done and was cozy. The meal started with an amuse-bouche from the chef which was fantastic, but unfortunately was probably the best thing served all night. We tried a variety of foods and I thought everything was good but there were no other "wow" moments. The soup, crake cakes and charcuterie board were all good/ fine, but the tuna I had for dinner was a bit disappointing (tasteless). Since we're staying at the Herrington Inn & Spa, we decided to make a reservation on OpenTable for 7 pm to see what it's all about. My partner remember seeing this restaurant on Choose Chicago as one of the restaurants participating in Chicago Restaurant Week. It felt great letting the host know of our reservation and being seated right away, he even pulled my chair out for me which was really sweet. Our server Val is really attentive and knowledgeable, she made really great recommendations that I ended up loving. We were also given a basket of bread as we sat down, and it was extremely fresh and fluffy. For drinks, I technically did a Bourbon Mule but substituted the bourbon with Tito's Vodka instead, and my partner did a cranberry mimosa -- such creative spins to the traditional cocktails. For food, we did crab cakes as the appetizer, I decided to do the $55 dinner for Chicago Restaurant Week (tomato basil soup, filet mignon, and crème brûlée), and my partner did the risotto. Val brought out an appetizer that was a treat from the chef, totally didn't expect that, and it was a really sweet gesture and it was actually delicious. I was able to try something I normally wouldn't order it was ahi tuna with chimichurri sauce and some other ingredients that I couldn't remember. It was nice to order a bunch of food and we were able to share with each other. I can honestly say you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection -- there's not many places that can truly make a steak come out medium rare, and it was extremely juicy and tender. I can appreciate a smaller selection on a menu where everything tastes amazing. The table setting was also beautiful, it felt like we were seated inside of a gazebo with stunning views of the river, and the place gave me vibes of a romantic candlelit dinner. Just when I thought this night couldn't be better, Val came with our check and 2 chocolate covered strawberries, and it definitely took me by surprise as I wasn't expecting that. It was delicious and similar to the ones I had ready for me in my room. The chocolate was milky and melts in your mouth, and the strawberries were ripe. I'd recommend Atwater's to anyone in the area looking for an upscale restaurant with great service, beautiful views of nature and delicious food across the board. read more

It was a special occasion 90th birthday lunch with friends, and it couldn't have been more special. My lunch was absolutely delicious - perfectly prepared filet with delicious potatoes and grilled asparagus. Following that tasty experience was a spectacular dessert - amazingly smooth ice cream with fresh berries and a wafer as light as an angel's wing. The two biggest highlights, as if it weren't already a memorable experience, was Stephanie, our lovely server and drink-maker, who made a PERFECT Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned for me, very difficult to find in these parts and she did not disappoint. Delicious dinner, very well prepared and served. Four of us (60s - early 70s) were there last night celebrating. The room is lovely and elegant, a view across a gazebo to the Fox River, slightly under lit, and with gentle background music through speakers. Service was polite, knowledgable, helpful and efficient. Wine choices are good and the specially-requested cucumber martini was very good. Dinner was excellent! The Roasted Beet Salad was a big hit as a starter. For main courses the Pork Tenderloin I ordered was fantastic, accompanied by a very tasty combination of Ham Hock Stewed Beans, White Cheddar Grits, and Hot Honey Butter. Two diners very much enjoyed the Walleye with Fried Corn Fritters and other accompaniments, and our fourth diner had high praise for the seared scallop special. Desserts were also outstanding. I loved the cheesecake, although a day later I forget exactly what ingredients it had, I just remember that it was great. And the diner who chose semifreddo (which I had never heard of) said that it was delicious. It's definitely not budget dining, but for the high quality and tastiness of everything, and the nice relaxing atmosphere, it was a good value and a memorable evening, and we highly recommend Atwater's at the charming Herrington Inn by the river in downtown Geneva, IL. read more

The restaurant / bar continues to take up prices frequently and quantities are diminishing. For example, all of their cocktails are $15 or above and most of them are $17! The pour is definitely smaller than it used to be too. They charge an astronomical $67 for a 12 oz prime steak!! We used to frequent the restaurant weekly but not anymore. We had date night there and as always really enjoyed the whole experience. The entire staff is incredibly friendly. Drinks are strong and well made. The lobby bar is warm and cozy. The restaurant is set in a windowed room overlooking the Fox River (the only river-view restaurants in Geneva), and there are a small number of tables, so you get excellent service. This time I had the sumac-dusted tuna and kimchi rice. I never want to eat tuna a different way again. I also highly recommend the brunch when you can sit out on the patio on a nice day. We traditionally come to the Harrington to enjoy a Mother's Day get together. My mom, sister, and I always use the spa and we always eat at Atwater. This year's experience was terrible. One lady was absolutely disrespectful and rude. The bar and wait staff was grumpy and not inviting. We definitely will not be going back. If you come to the hotel and use the spa, I suggest eating and enjoying the bar elsewhere. read more
