We were excited to visit this historic restaurant and were happy to be seated after we arrived. However, after sitting for about 10 minutes, no one came by to take our order or check on us, and we didn't feel like there was much interest in serving our table. It was also a very hot day, and eating inside wasn't especially appealing given the temperature. We ultimately decided to leave and dine elsewhere. The restaurant has a lot of history and character, and I can see how it might be a great experience on a cooler day. Unfortunately, it just didn't work out for us during this visit. read more

The name sums up the ambiance. We sat in the front dining room where the charmingly entertaining owner, Francisco treated us with familial warmth. We ordered the terrine and both the duck magret & confit which were served with mushrooms and a delicious baked vegetable as well as escaloped potatoes. The most unique, memorable, and fantastic dining experience we had in Paris. The food was lovely, the tiny dining room's ancient ambience was the most authentically Parisian place I could have imagined. Picking our own bottle of wine from the wine cave was thrilling. Chaos ensued throughout the night, but it was the best kind of chaos! The resident cat, Chopin, napped on the bench of a neighboring patron. The kitchen staff got into a shouting match with the front-of-house staff, only to be quelled by a full-throated rendition of Operatic singing (quite good too) by the Maitre De. Wine seemed to be flowing of its own accord. We stayed long into the night and were introduced to travelers from Estonia, Poland, Australia, Germany, French natives, and one American pilot who frequents the place. I can appreciate how some people might be turned-off by the incongruity and chaos of this place, but for me, my wife, and my two daughters, it was precisely the magical combination of ingredients that created memories that will last a lifetime! read more

The food was amazing! It is a very quaint setting that feels old world but decorate it like your drunk uncle went garbage picking. The waitstaff doesn't speak much English, but they were so accommodating to all of us American tourists who were here for work. I asked what was better between the beef & chicken & was told it was the "best chicken ever". Honestly, it lived up to alllll of the hype. This was one of my favorite dining experiences in Europe ... probably the world. This little house turned restaurant was erected in 1622. It's located off a beaten path near the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Yes. It's been standing since 1622. And it's beautiful, with vines and flowers draped across the front. The dining area has desks and benches and other wooden accommodations. It's very intimate and small. Besides the super cool historical aspect, (think about all the people who have lived and died there, probably the babies born there. all the battles it's seen on its streets, the thousands of not millions of people who have dined in those same walls...) the food is actually scrumptious. This was my favorite restaurant in Paris for sure. I tried the mussels with French fries and OH. MY. GOD. Seasoned to perfection with tons of fresh garlic and oil. My boyfriend tried the pasta carbonara and also ate every last bit of it, because it was delicious. If you're a bacon lover, this dish was made for you. Ask for a blonde beer. It's delicious and light and refreshing. To top it off, the staff are friendly, accommodating and fun. They speak just enough English to take your orders and answer a few questions. We had a lovely outdoor meal at what is supposed to be one of the oldest restaurants in Paris. The restaurant had a great location, on the isle of Cite very close to many of the tourist attractions. We came with a larger group (7 of us) so outdoors seemed best as the indoor space was a bit smaller. Half of our group enjoyed a bottle of red wine selected from the cellar (which was a fun touch- be careful on the stairs) and the other half enjoyed a St. Germain spritz- so refreshing. My brother and I started with the scallops and our table started with the escargot- and we were very pleased with both of those. I had the specialty of the house- beef bourguignon- and it was fine. The pasta to go with it came out several minutes after the beef which was a little strange. We all wanted dessert so ordered the creme brulee and it was a very large delicious portion. We searched " must try cafe in Paris" and this cafe came up several times so we had to drop by even though it's quite out of our way First impression is the outside is absolutely beautiful. The tree is so green and pretty. There are only several tables and chairs that are super purple so it makes a nice contrast. There was only one person working . I think he's an owner. We sat for a while and didn't see him come out to take order so I walked in and he told me he is so busy so it will be several minutes. Other people were waiting for their bill as well. The coffee machine was broken so no capuccinos or hot chocolate. The apple juice didn't taste fresh either. I walked in and tried to get the bill and the owner was on the phone so he let me wait for several minutes . The guy didn't care much about his customer The cafe is at the end of the street /small street so you can't really people watch while drinking your coffee. It's not near the river. The closure of the Notre Dame makes the area tranquil and calm. While having our drink I looked up the reviews. It's the, or one of, oldest restaurant in Paris. Horrible place, honestly gives Paris restaurants/cafes a bad name. The owner was extremely friendly at first explaining this was the oldest restaurant in France which drew us in off the street. Soon after sitting down we started to realize that he was mocking us with his valley girl voice, he started disappearing and reappearing with cold chicken and dishes I didn't order. When I finally had enough of the bad service and food I had to chase him down for a check, he hit me with a bill that had items I didn't even order. Seemed like the reviews were good here and it was close to the station, so we went. Reception was terrible. The person at the front immediately made fun of my American accent by faking a valley girl accent. Service timing was ok, but the food was not good. My friends chicken was under done and the resulting bill for two was 40 euro. Not worth it at that price. The decorations are incredibly tacky. And I'm pretty sure this is not the oldest restaurant in Paris, and even if it was, the food alone doesn't make coming here worth it. read more

I am puzzled by people who gave one star review for the restaurant. I am wondering whether we ate at the same restaurant. The service was good and the server and manager were friendly. The food is good at very reasonable price. The decor is of the Belle Époque with a view of the tip of Notre Dame from the first floor. I assumed that the bad reviews came mostly from Americans, who are known to be rude and demanding. Some of the complains said that the service was slow. They must understand that this is not a fast food restaurant or a restaurant that served reheat food. Services in many restaurants in tourist areas are fast because the food they served are reheat meal and not cooked from scratch. Unlike in the US when people are in a hurry to eat and get out, here in France people take time to eat in a restaurant and enjoy the meals and drinks. read more

You get to choose a bottle of wine from their wine cellar in the small basement. So cool! Located in a touristy area (around the corner from the Notre Dame), but the food was pretty solid and the atmosphere was unique. We went for a Friday lunch and were seated by a window. You can truly sense the history of this place--it's so old and has a lot of character! They gave us little cups of vegetable soup as a "surprise". My husband had the steak meal at the suggestion of the server. It was perfectly cooked (the French don't ask you how you want your steak cooked. You just eat it the way they want you to eat it) and came with half a dozen veggie sides, which were very good. My pork was served the same way, but I found it just a tad bit dry. I wanted the coq au vin which was written up as a special in front of the restaurant, but was told it was not available (not sure why not if it was written on their board outside, but whatever). Our server was perfectly nice and told us about the places he had visited in the USA and was chatty and checked in on us often but discreetly. A local told me about Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole - tucked in a little street about 2 blocks away from Notre Dame. I probably would not have never found this place by myself. The food was good and we were lucky enough to get a seat without a reservation. But I didn't know that it would be such an expensive meal. We spent about 120 euros here. It looks so unassuming from the outside, but it's pretty chic indoors. Our dinner took roughly 3 hours, which I guess isn't too bad for French standards, but there was just a lot of idle time in between and ignored moments from the one waiter - he did host about 10 tables though. EDIT: In hindsight, I need to let go and remember that unhurried service = good service in France. It's still hard for me to recall this fact sometimes, so please forgive my impatience. The food was good especially their hot foie gras appetizer and bouef bougnion main plate. We were a little disappointed with their apple tart dessert though. And, of course, their house Bordeaux was quite good. read more

I hate to rate this so highly out of fear that it will be over run the next time I go. In spite of its location, it's really a locals place. Always have the filet de boeuf if you can't decide. It is an amazingly good steak. It's memorable because it comes HOT without being OVERCOOKED. Ask for it to be cooked "au point" and it is a bloodless medium rare. The house red is a Bordeaux, You couldn't find something this refined in the US without paying over $100 for the bottle. I love California Reds, but they can be over powering sometimes. This place always matches the wine to the meal wonderfully. Most recent dessert was a tarte rating. Perfect ratio of fruit to buttery crust. If you want a good IG picture, this is the place. Besides that don't expect much on the food or customer services. Like all little café in Paris, spaces are limited, so most of the time you're seated outside. We sat outside and our server came out, no greetings no smiles, he smacked two menus in front of me and my sister and left us to look it over. After about 20mins, he resurfaced to take our order. We didn't speak any French, so we had a few questions regarding the food on the menu. Our server seems a bit annoyed but explained what some of them are to us. We ordered the house pate, and the pork chop based on some yelp recommendations. The house pate was good, but It only came out with two pieces of bread, it wished they'd given us more b/c we finished the bread and there were still plenty of pate left. Im sure we could've asked for more, but our server kind of MIA most of the time. My sister's pork chop was a bit on the dryer side, but not to a point where we need to have it remade.. Then we asked for the check, and he brought it out after a while...I knew it would've taken 20mins before he'd come out with the credit card machine, so we just bought it inside and pay. We were initially lured into this place by a cat in the window, followed by a supposedly friendly proprietor. He invited us to come it and look around. Told us it was the oldest restaurant in Paris. We decided to stick around and get some coffee. The owner (?) appeared friendly, but kept talking in an exaggerated American accent ("valley girl talk") to us, which maybe was supposed to be a joke, but got a bit offensive after a while. He also appeared to be mocking some German patrons. We kept standing around waiting to be seated, while the owner was doing god knows what. Finally we reminded him we wanted to get coffee to what he responded "Ok, fine, before I close up". Wait, what? First of all, "ok, fine?!", second of all, it was not even 4pm! We decided to leave. Romantic, romantic, romantic. Absolute perfection -- this is an ideal little spot for loved ones to share a meal, a gorgeous bottle of wine and have a truly unique experience. Way, way, way back when my husband and I were celebrating our very first anniversary, we came to Paris. We stayed in a tiny flat on the Ile de la Cité, and the kind people who owned it suggested this petit and truly authentic little spot for dinner on our first night there. Totally jet-lagged and starving, we made our way down Rue Chanoinesse and were completely blown away by Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole. So blown away that all these years later, upon our return to the City of Lights, we made this our first dining destination and were not disappointed! The building it's in is ancient -- probably as old as Notre Damme, which you can see from the teensy windows. The low ceilings and crumbling walls give off an entirely medieval vibe, and the furniture has got to come from some old church; it's heavy, wooden, awkward, and most definitely not of this century. There are only five tables in the main dining room, and one delightfully French waiter in a bow tie and vest hastily makes his way around the room. While it's in the heart of the Ile de la Cité, this is most definitely a place for locals -- nothing about it screams touristy or cheap in the least. My favorite part? The wine cellar. You make your way down the almost comically small, winding staircase into the cramped cellar where you select your bottle from many. The prices are clearly marked above each rack and the waiter knows them by heart. Do yourself a favor and splurge a little -- it's totally worth it. While the specialty here is the beef cheeks, I highly recommend the filet de beouf preceded by the excellent escargots, and the Salade gourmande -- this is not to be missed. With excellent greens, a heavenly lemon dressing, perfectly prepared fois gras terrine and out-of-this-world delicious lardon, I think it was the highlight of my meal. Really, get it. You'll be so very happy you did. Everything is reasonably priced and well portioned; you definitely get your money's worth, which makes you feel a little better about splurging on the wine :). I love Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole. All these years later, and I am still as charmed as I was my first time there. The next time I'm in Paris, I will most definitely be popping in for an extraordinary and authentic French meal. read more

What a wonderful place. We stumbled up on this gem on our search for a local place for dinner. Only two streets away from Notre Dame, this is a beautiful dinner location tucked away in a side street. The interior is home-y and you feel comfy right away. The serves were very nice and gave us an open table even without a reservation on a Saturday night. We both decided on the daily special and we couldn't have made a better choice. The best part of our dinner was the dessert though, a creme brule like I have never tasted one before. read more
