You simply will not find a better breakfast in town. Wayland, Michigan is a small town in every regard and it's full of amazing people. The Auction House is quite literally all the best parts of Wayland, MI wrapped up in one dining experience. When you walk into this simple brick outbuilding of the livestock auction, you might be taken back by how tiny it is really is. About 20 seats wrapped around a U shaped counter. If all the seats are filled, just be patient and hang out by the door, something will open up soon. If you need seats together, it is not unusual to see a whole row of customers get up and shift their seats around to make room for you. That's just what you do because it's the right thing to do. Very Wayland. You'll also want to prepare yourself for small talk. When you sit at the counter, it's more like sitting at a giant dinner table in your kitchen at home. There's plenty of regular customers and it won't take long for you to become one yourself. Amy's food is outstanding and, trust me, you won't go hungry. I highly recommend the breakfast burrito, but people also go nuts for the HUGE pancakes and omelettes. Don't want a HUGE pancake? Ask for a little one...I dare you. See what happens. The coffee was weak. Always a pet peeve of mine at a breakfast place. The eggs in the omelette I ordered were rubbery. The cheese hadn't melted so the omelette hadn't been cooked properly. On a dark desert highway, cool wind in your hair, warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light. My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for a bite. I really had my heart set on breakfast so I had their amazing cinnamon roll to start. It looks larger than any two people should eat but it was so good and went so well with their fresh black coffee in a bottomless mug that I polished that off then had one of the best burgers ever. We were taking the scenic route back to Kalamazoo from Grand Rapids exploring Yelp on the way and decided to try it based on the other reviews. Do Not let the looks of the building sway you. Really small little place that if you blink you'll miss it. But don't drive by it. Stop in. Found this place after hockey.. wasn't too far away from southside ice arena.. maybe 10 minutes. Friendly place w locals. Conversation to be had as you sit around a counter in a U shape. Makes for a great experience when you can chat with people. Food was good. The Auction House Cafe was a great find. The place doesn't look like much on the outside and it very seasoned on the inside, but what a great experience. The restaurant has 15 seats of mixed styles placed along a wrap around bar top. The kitchen is open, to the seating so you can talk with the Chef/owner Kim while she is preparing your meal. The servings are huge but full of flavor. Great discussions between the locals and all were welcoming. We ended up taking as much home as we ate. I strongly suggest the French Toast, Breakfast Scramble or the pancakes. read more

Amazing burgers and homemade breads. Owner-operated cafe, that feels like home. The curbside takeout service is very convenient. I've only eaten at the counter twice, but both times I felt more like I was eating over at my grandma's house, rather than sitting in a restaurant ... the old fashioned decor and vintage feeling provided by the U-shaped counter, is comfortable and cozy. It's hard to say much more than what others have already said, the part about driving by it, that's exactly what happened to our group when we were looking for this place, we came here because our campsite got rained out during the B-93 Birthday bash! We had a group of 7 and we occupied roughly half of the available seats, I don't recommend large groups unless you walk in at 6 am when they open. It kinda reminds me of an old school dinner, you can talk to the chef as she cooks if you wanted to! And man she was amazing I don't know what her name was but every bit of her food was so delicious that every plate was picked completely clean. The pancakes I was told were magic by one of the group members just as another reviewer stated. I imagine this place is somewhere you could go to talk to some true locals if you wanted to find out about the town, and the people that come in, man, just beyond friendly every single one of them it was just really nice to enjoy our meals in a quiet area and have great conversations with these people just about random things like the bash and the weather, anyways Best restaurant I've been to in forever Thanks again auction house for a wonderful breakfast none of us will ever forget! read more

Very small quaint place. I ordered biscuits and gravy and 2 scrambled eggs, my plus one got a skillet. The food was good, but I never got my eggs and was charged. One of the most nondescript exteriors ever - we drove right by the first time and didn't see it even though we were looking for it...but that just adds to the charm. The food was great! Hands down great. I had a bacon and blue cheese burger, medium rare, and asked for the homemade bread (grilled) instead of a bun. Argh...just writing about it makes me want another one immediately! The cook knows meat and it was indeed medium rare - perfect with bacon done just right. This place definitely deserves a review and I will be happy to be the one to give it. I have been going to the auction house since I was a boy too young to remember. This place is a small little building in the middle of a gravel parking lot between old Stamm's equipment farm repair and the Wayland livestock auction barn. This place opens every day before the sun rises for farmers and retirees whose body clocks will never allow them the chance to miss a sunrise. The same women have been serving me all my life and the style of the interior never changes. The same linoleum counters and stools are still there and will probably grace a local museum for all the hands who have touched them. Only locals know about the place and it's a little like the show "Cheers" where everybody knows your name. There is a lot of talk on hunting, local news, the weather, the crop, the economy and the family. But anyone is welcome and there is always plenty of food to be cooked on the open stove. There is no menu and the cook will prepare anything you can imagine for a farmers breakfast at an extremely reasonable price. Eggs any way you like them over corned beef hash, potato wedges, homemade breads and toast, pancakes, sausages, pie, juices, and coffee. Bring your own mug for top-offs. If you are traveling down the highway and are looking for a good breakfast, this is the place to see. I have no idea how long this place has been here or how long it will stay, but it is a place as familiar as my bed at home and a part of the places where I grew to be a man. Enjoy. read more

I've been coming here since I was in a car seat. The menu hasn't changed much, and as again never had a bad meal. The homemade toast is my favorite toast. My usual is eggs sausage and toast, I recommend the breakfast burrito it's huge and filling. The biscuit and gravy is an old stand by. The staff are quick and good. Their pancakes are apparently from GFS but I swear they add their own bit of magic there, cuz they are the biggest, tastiest, fluffiest, butteriest pancakes I've ever had. This place is truly the 'local flavor' of wayland. Only about 10 seats in the whole place along the counter so not very convenient for a big group. But definitely worth it read more
