Nowadays, companies expect people to throw things away when they break or wear out. But it is stupid and expensive to throw nice stereo equipment away if it can be repaired. I brought my four worn out Advent speakers, which I bought in the 1970s, to Audio Proz. My local repair shop told me to throw them away, but I knew that was not right. Now my living room sounds better than a movie theater when we watch movies, and my speakers probably sound way better than most home theater systems. If you take your stereo for repair here, it is not like going to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I can see why someone would get a bad impression because this shop is old school, which I personally enjoyed a lot. If you give a deposit, it is to pay the technician to spend time evaluating the repair. I was willing to spend the money up front- if you aren't, then think twice. The repairs turned out great and I had a great experience, so I am glad that I did. So my advice to anyone going to AudioProz is to have a little patience and respect for the type of repair place this is and then you will probably have a positive result. read more

If you have a malfunctioning or damaged piece of audio equipment, take it to Audio Pro. I was a little reluctant to trust them with my stuff based on some reviews I'd seen, but now that my repairs are done I am a fan! I first heard about Audio Pro from a short YouTube video titled "The Audio Environmentalist"--check it out. Vince's philosophy of keeping perfectly good older equipment out of landfills struck a chord with me, so I decided to give him a try. The two items I had repaired were a Marantz receiver and an Aiwa mini system that were both manufactured around 1997. Each cost me a little over $300 originally, so we're not talking about fancy audiophile equipment--just decent older stuff that still sounds great. After 13 years or so some movers had bashed in the headphone jack on the Marantz receiver and the Aiwa's cassette deck and CD player were just about dead. I liked the idea of getting this stuff fixed instead of buying shiny new black plastic boxes that in most ways probably wouldn't have been as nice. Turns out I made the right decision--both systems are now as good as new. The Marantz receiver was fixed in about six days, which was a little faster than I expected. They took a lot longer with the Aiwa system. I eventually found the delay frustrating, mainly because I didn't know this shop well and I started to wonder if the job would ever get done. In fairness, when I took the Aiwa in I did tell them to take all the time they needed. Also, it's a compact consumer stereo that is not exactly cost-effective to repair. The other audio shop I approached refused to repair it at all. In the end, my patience paid off and Audio Pro did a great job. I will say that Vince can come across as a little abrasive at times. He's running a busy shop and he seems to have a short fuse. If your own fuse is on the short side or if you're in the habit of insisting that the customer is always right you should still go to Audio Pro, but you'll have a better experience if you resolve ahead of time to keep that attitude in check. Come on, you can do it! One of the other main guys at Audio Pro--Ken--also helped me out a lot by patiently answering questions and generally exuding professionalism. I'm really happy to have my two stereos working again thanks to these guys. Five stars. A final note--they also sell a lot of really nice equipment, both old and new. My Sony CD player needed repair so brought it in to Audio Proz. It wasn't repairable so purchased refurbished Sony CD player for very reasonable price. It is even compatible with my old remote. I would definitely recommend these guys!! read more

My vintage Pioneer Amp that I bought from these guys started malfunctioning and I was left without music for a while. I've had the amp for about 2 1/2 years and i understand that old equipment is going to eventually go bad because of old parts. So instead of bringing the amp immediately to these guys for repair, I decided it was time to play with a new amp. I plugged my speakers in added a sub woofer and center speaker to the new amp and it just sounded like crap to me. I missed the sound signature that came from my Pioneer amp that was described to me by the audio proz at the store. So i eventually sent my old pioneer amp in for repair and got it back the following week working beautifully. My ears are melting right now from the beautiful music coming out of my speakers with the help of my amp. These guys know their stuff and the owner might be a bit rough when you talk to him, but hes just direct, to the point and im sure truly wants to help you when it comes to your audio needs. read more

This fellow scared me, and I didn't even go there! I was referred to AudioProz by a shop that couldn't fix my elderly cassette deck. I left a message on their website. Got a voicemail back from Vince, but when I returned his call I was subjected to a rant similar to what others have reported: Don't come to the door...call for an appointment...my estimates are higher than other people...I don't call back on estimates, I just do the repairs, you have to sign a document saying that's OK...Bain Capital owns everything in audio and it's all crap...don't come to the door... He didn't want to listen to what I thought might actually wrong with the deck, insisted that the only way to be sure was to open it up...use his special silver paste on the contacts...custom rubber rejuvenator...DON'T come to the door...everyone's yelling at me but we have to schedule our time so carefully...[deck manufacturer] played games with EQ, I get that, but I set them up to NAB standards, no one else does that...people are always yelling at me, but I TOLD them not to come to the door!!... OK, fine, there are a lot of really talented technical people out there with dismal social skills, but there's no way in hell I'm dealing with this guy - life's too short. ps - he needn't worry - I won't come to the door. read more

I had an all in one Harmon Kardon receiver go belly up and I had to consult an expert. As these types of places are few and far between now, I landed on Audio Pros in Watertown. I'm looking at the reviews, and I think they are a bit off.. I get and understand the comments about Vince- I just don't agree. His interpersonal skills are 'different'. I am used to working with computer developers and his personality reminded me of one. Smart and proud of his knowledge. You brought your equipment to him for his experience- so stop, don't interrupt and LISTEN. You may take his advice you may not take his advice, however if there is a chance it's unfixable and he digs in - you still need to pay the man for his time! Cmon people. Some of this is a guessing game (although a very educated/experienced guess) but nothing is 100% and someones time IS NOT FREE. I can tell you from my interactions Vince and team are honest with their time. AudioProz could have taken my entire deposit, but actually returned some of it, because it was more money than the work Vince put in. Who does this anymore? Personally I found Vince's unique personality endearing and actually really funny. While I understand it may come off as 'harsh' to some people -- I can vouch for his character. Just go in there prepared for someone a bit different! Visit the shop and listen to him talk about TV's, receivers, mixing boards, amps etc. "oh, that year used XYZ capacitors outsourced from China- up to that point it was all made and manufactured in the USA" Crazy specific. He loves his work-- and he has a lot of it piled up. So sure, he's a touch eccentric and stressed. Anyway, Ken is a nice guy too. He's super laid back-- and he seems to hold the place together. I can imagine it's not an easy job. Even if you are driving by- stop in, as it's just a cool throwback shop you don't get to see anymore. STAY FAR AWAY! What an absolute nightmare. Not only is their customer service downright miserable, but Vince, the owner, has serious anger management issues. Long story short, I am a professional DJ and I brought my two Technics 1200 turntables in for maintenance and to have the RCA cables and ground wire changed and upgraded. Both turntables were working perfectly, with the exception of one of the RCA cables being intermittent with a loss of sound, hence the request to change out the cables. Vince insisted that they may need to do more serious work after they look at the decks, and I said money is no object, just get these puppies working the bet they can. I got a call three days later to pick up. I came in, thanked them for the quick service, paid about $100 per table, and went out the door. I had no time to test before my gig, so I got to my gig and set the tables up. First thing I noticed was that they didn't change out the ground wires. I had one chewed up wire and I noticed right away. WTF? This was the only thing I asked them to do. I plugged it in and the thing started buzzing like crazy. Mind you, this did not happen before I brought it in. Not only did then not do the work I asked, they actually broke my turntable! Thank GOD I had a backup table, or the gig would have been ruined. I brought the deck back the next day, and they INSISTED that it was fine, they had checked it before it went out the door, and that I was crazy. They out it up on the bench and of course, buzzing right away. I asked for my money back, and I got a lot of yelling from Vince plus a big Fuck You (!). Who says fuck you to a paying customer after they broke the turntable they were supposed to simply change wires on? Unbelievable! Seriously, I have better things to do then sit here and type crap on yelp, but I need to let everyone know to stay away from this bastard. He refused to give me a full refund, only partial. I went in here over 10 years ago and I can't believe they're still around. I traded in a multitrack recorder here for another one. Because the one I had wasn't working, I had to pay an additional amount, as expected. However, as it turned out, the one that I got from Vince had a plethora of problems and since it was used he wouldn't take it back. I ended up having to bring it over to Aztech and pay more money to have them replace a bunch of parts on it. Moral of the story: don't go here. Update on a piece I had taken in before the CDP. I took in a Sansui AU 517 to have him do a complete service on. He said he would do this and that and have it up and running perfectly. Dropped it off on Wed., they called on Fri and said it was ready. Got it home and had been playing it for about a month and a half or so. Started having this issue when the speaker selector was flipped to A, the left channel came on and the right channel sounded garbly and then came on after a few seconds. Was also getting a "thump" from the left speaker when flipping selector as well. This was not cool by me. I immediately took all covers off, got some de oxit and started hunting for bad parts. Come to find out that there were at least 6-8 parts with tons of corrosion on them, parts with the "brown glue" that he said he would remove, and caps bulging. So I pulled the board with the bad resistor that had broken from corrosion, took it to Audio Lab in Cambridge and they fixed the bulging cap and resistor for $35. (Very fair in my opinion). Picked it up, re installed it and still I got the garble and pause for right channel. Took it back apart, did some more fishing. Found more corrosion on PCB with yet another resistor breaking from this. Sat and questioned myself about what to do. This was an area where I couldn't pull the board myself. I decided that because the resistor was just behind some caps, I would teach myself to solder and do it myself. Did it the next day and no more pauses in right channel :) Asked about DC Offset and Bias settings on AudioKarma and found out that they would be out of whack after changing parts. Bought a multimeter and checked everything myself once again. Found that the DC Offset in the left channel was almost 1V (supposed to be 0mv +/- 5. This explained the "thump" in the left channel. So after all was said and done, I paid Audio Pro $200 to do absolutely nothing but clean some of the switches. Total waste of time and money! As the saying goes, "If you want something done right, then do it yourself." DO NOT GIVE THESE GUYS ANY OF YOUR HARD EARNED $$$$!!! read more

I recently, now that my kids are supposed to be grown, set out to revitalize my vintage stereo system. The heart of which is my apt holman pre amp. Although good, i remembered it being beter. I discovered on line the existence of Audio pros in Watertown mass. After a lenghty and informative, He can run on in a good way, discussion with the owner Vince I decided to send him my amp for a total "level 3" redo. What I received back in 10 days was pure magic, In fact I never remember it sounding so good. Every interaction with the entire staff was professional and caring. My friends father who had a bunch of stereo gear from an old lotus dealership was looking to clear space and get rid of a bunch of old stereo gear. I recommended they bring it to audio pro's as it was a short drive from his house, I had helped the 75 year old vet, by loading his station wagon with several pairs of speakers, amps, and turntables in various conditions. He had originally had an appointment but the owner was sick, and from the beginning he was told it would be no problem to bring the items by for a quick look as long as he had an appointment, but when he tried to reschedule, they told him they required the model numbers to even bother looking at the gear, now this is a problem as it was packed in the car for him, and he's incapable of flipping the gear around and searching for and recording model numbers. He called me looking for help, but I was out of town I called to see if he could just drive it by for them to look at. This is where this place fails miserably. THE OWNER!!!!!!!, what a piece of work, I have never talked to somebody so rude and condescending who runs a business, he wouldn't let me get a word in to explain that writing down the numbers was not an option, and it would be great to just stop by at scheduled time , any time I started to speak he cut me off, and talked down to me, explain that I have to let him talk, all he kept asking for was some basic information like model numbers, and serial numbers ! that sounds like very specific information to me! I had told him the brands of speakers and feel it should have been enough, advent, bang & olufson, + some lesser brands, and old vintage sony, some wooden based turntables with no id marks on them . This guy was so rude, he wont let you talk, I said the man is 75 and cant read the model numbers, his response was" I don't need a big story" , This guy is missing social skills, and im glad im selling the good BO stuff on ebay, (BTW ht4700, bo 4000) and some of the other stuff the speakers were shot, but wooden housings were excellent and sure the internals were good for parts, he kept asking 2 "VERY SIMPLE QUESTIONS"over and over like a robot, one was the model numbers and the other what we wanted (this means he wants to rip people off, who don't know they may have good gear), I tried to get in only $20 for the lot, but he would not even let me speak! it was more a matter of not wanting them to go to the dump, a $0 offer would have been accepted by the old man who would have been happy to have them unloaded, something he could not do. If you ask a person a question LET THEM ANSWER IT, he is counterproductive to talk to. Avoid, sell on ebay you will get a fair price, the2 sets of bo speaker are selling for over $100 consistently , and the amp I haven't found a price but im sure its worth more. read more

Your first visit could be a total turn off, but don't give up on this place. I've bought various tubes, cables, pre amps and speaker and (most importantly) I've had Vince get two of my vintage tube amps up and running into excellent working condition. It's not cheap, but it good honest work and the repairs will sound worth the money when your amp comes back to you sounding better than ever. I get about 15 to 30 minutes of lecturing (interesting and quasi-comical), per visit. If you know a little going in, it'll helps to understand the value of the lecture. If you don't want the lecturing, but want the service, you'll have to be very blunt with Vince to save your time. Just be aware that Vince will not understand your time restraints very well. I look at it like this: its a hobby shop. A hobbiest shouldn't go into a shop without willingness to engage their passion for the hobby. Vince will engage and challange your way of viewing the hobby. His knowledge is impressive. If work with him, he won't sell you any BS. 4/5 stars. I'll add one more star the day I go in and out in less than 15 minutes. They do good work and their costs (and timeframes) are reasonable. However, the owner will likely talk your ear off, and give you lots of advice. He might even tell you your audiophile gear is not as good as the vintage gear he sells in his shop. Take it or leave it..and ask yourself why a such a self-proclaimed expert in all-things-hifi is running a small closet of a shop in Watertown. Ok, so the owner, Vince, is highly opinionated on a wide range of subjects. If some of the other reviewers had taken the time to actually converse with him, as I did, they would have found him to be an engaging and interesting guy. That said, when I take my stereo equipment to be repaired, I am less interested in the personalities involved that I am in their competence and professionalism. On that score, they rate a perfect 5 stars from me. Whether Vince is likable or not has nothing to do with old vacuum tubes, dead diodes and replacement caps. My dad built a Dynakit 70 amp more than 50 years ago. For a long time after he passed away it was boxed up in the attic. Four years ago I had it repaired and it worked fine until it started burning fuses several weeks ago. I took it over to Vince and long story short he and his staff did a fine job of bringing it up to spec. It is working perfectly--better today with my streaming music from Pandora than it did back in the day, when in the evenings it amped out "Victory at Sea" and during the day (when dad wasn't home!) early Doors for me. I respect people with passion. I respect mad artists. Vince is the former, and if he is the latter, too, all the better. read more

I should have read the reviews before I went to Audio Pro. Although the other guys who work there are nice, Vince, the owner, is a total jackass who is so arrogant and thinks he knows better than everyone else. Vince is just about the most dishonest person I have ever done business with. I brought my father's vintage speakers in for repair. They needed new fuses, one of the advent woofers was blown, and I simply did not have an amp powerful enough to run them. After an unbearably long, one sided conversation, Vince told me he would update the crossover, swap out the advent woofers, and the speakers would work beautifully. He certainly updated the crossover, I am able to run the speakers on a 70 watt amp, but the woofer that was blown when I brought the speakers in was blown when I got them home. It is clear to me that he did not touch either of the woofers. Anyhow, $400 later I have one working speaker and one broken speaker. When I called Vince to confront him about the matter, he refused to listen, running his mouth nonstop, not letting me get a word in edgewise, and becoming personally insulting. At one point in the conversation he told me that he had put me on speaker phone and that everyone was listening to me, presumably to shame me; he's a strange fellow, as has been noted in other reviews. I mean, I am not ashamed at all of what I have to say, as evidenced by what I am doing here. Does that tactic work on some people? I opened a case with the BBB. He responded to my complaint with an exceptionally long and disrespectful tirade that concluded with an offer to fix my speakers for $200. He then stated that he had recorded our previous conversation, the one where he had put me on speaker phone. I still don't get what that is supposed to mean to me, but okay. I mean this guy is like cult leader weird. He has continued to insist that he did swap out the woofers, so I have offered to have a neutral, third-party expert look at the speakers, and, if my assertions are incorrect, pay for the inspection and drop my complaint. I am yet to hear back from him. I'm pretty sure he doesn't want any pesky outsiders challenging his authority. I could never imagine treating a customer the way I was treated by Vince, and I don't understand how he has gotten away with doing things this way for so long. Moreover, I don't understand what he gains from acting this way. He gets away with ripping people off one time, and then they never come back. I believe you do better for yourself when you do business honestly. Vince, on the other hand, believes you do better by shitting on your patrons, taking advantage of them whenever you identify an opportunity, and just assuming that they are idiots that will never figure out that they've been fucked. These guys took care of my Sansui G-9000 it was damaged in shipping due to the seller not double boxing a 70 pound receiver also the previous shop('s) that worked on it never found the real problem. Audio Pro only had it for a few days and had it back to me working perfect. It sounds great and I'm very glad I went there. They really did a great job! The shop is awesome and has many silver faced equipment for sale and the guys really know their stuff. I will return to this shop for service/purchases and suggest it to friends. They were very up front with me and honest about all of the repairs done the write up was 3 pages long detailing what had been done to repair the unit. Vince also took the time to go through the whole thing with me explaining everything about the repair which was awesome! Apparently, I'm not the only one who has been ripped off by Vince. My story is the same as so many others who have posted here. Vince charged me exhorbinant sums of money to fix my equipment, vintage speakers in my case, and when I got them home, I discovered that he had not done the work he had charged me for. Some time later I took them to another speaker guy; he actually did the work, and it cost me less than half of what Vince conned me out of. This happened a while ago, and clearly he's still at it. I contacted this shop to inquire about a repair of my vintage Akai 635 reel to reel tape deck. I initially spoke with a technician who was cordial. He said I would need to speak to Vince the owner. Vince is a complete jackass. He immediately made me feel like a complete idiot. He lectured me that "he does not want to hear customer stories." He would proceed to ask me a series of questions in a specific order and if I did not respond exactly to his questions, the conversation would be over. When I attempted to qualify my response to provide a clearer indication of what happened, he berated me. He told me he was "very busy, and I could call back in a couple of weeks to see if it made sense for him to take on the repair". Thankfully, I logged on to Yelp and found many similar comments about this gentleman. Stay away from here. I wound up taking the unit to another shop quite a distance away - but no drama and the repair was completed on time, on cost and without hysteria. read more

Exceptionally knowledgeable & talented people. I've been a customer for over 10 years. Vince successfully brought back to life my Dad's 1972 Harman Kardon 930 receiver, & it sounds just as good - if not better - than it did when it was new. I've purchased 2 turntables from them over the years. I still own both of them, & they are still working beautifully. I recommended them to a friend & he was very well taken care of. It's worth noting that those who are elbows-deep fixing &/or customizing audio equipment might not be the most sociable types... I understand this, & I'm not a customer there because I'm looking for a friend. The eccentric person who is passionate about his subject is not a turn-off for me. I have never left a business feeling as disrespected, frightened and humiliated as I did today at this place.

You may find it difficult to get an appointment here, but don't let Vince's caustic personality turn you off, he is highly knowledgeable and extremely skilled. This place isn't everything an enthusiast could want, but there is no place that is. I've had repairs of tape decks and equipment that frankly wasn't worth repairing, but I still wanted to use, and the work was always done very well. If they can't repair something, it won't be for a lack of skill on their part, but more because there just aren't parts anymore, and they have an impressive selection of reconditioned equipment for home theatre, recording, and the amateur enthusiast. I needed a decent pair of front speakers, so Vince re-voiced a set of old Sony speakers and they're the best sounding speakers I've ever heard for under $200. He also found a good quality SVHS recorder for my dad, it being the easiest non-computer based way to record and archive 480i tv. All in all, I'm very happy with the service and merchandise I've gotten here, I wish I had more to spend. read more

I was ready to have Vince repair one speaker today, and to purchase two new speakers from him as well. However, he asked me questions and then repeatedly interrupted my responses before I could even get started answering. I politely asked if he could let me finish without interrupting and he said, "no, if you say something incorrect I will interrupt you." I am not sure what could possibly be incorrect about explaining the type of speaker I need, but apparently he thought he knew better than I did. It was an unbelievable conversation. The issue here, as many have commented on, is simply that the owner Vince is not a likable guy. He is completely unaware of how he comes across and social skills are poor. He will never win a congeniality contest. If he didnt own this business I think he'd be fired--not for lack of knowledge, which he obviously has, but for lack of people skills. So be prepared before you walk in and if you can deal with him the service is okay. Many people want both--good work and someone who knows how to treat people. read more

I'd put the rating for AudioProz somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. Vince is impatient, inflexible and likes to expound endlessly on his opinion of home and professional audio. He seems either unaware or unfazed when the person to whom he is speaking is not interested in being lectured. His employees are actually very nice and a pleasure to deal with, but Vince has to come sign off on everything, so if you go there, you will just have to be prepared to work with him. They did some nice work on a pair of vintage speakers for me, although their service prices tend to be more expensive than those at other good places. Great little shop in Watertown that will fix all your hi-fi audio needs. Honest guys, they're very frank about their opinions. Vince and Ken modified a pair of speakers for me, they sound absolutely amazing now. Work with them and you'll get the best for your buck.
