Their $5 rack absolutely rocks. I have to hold myself back from it when I stride by during the summer. They have a better selection bags and accessories during the summer but I really come here for sweaters. I can probably count on my hand the amount of times that I left the store without buying a little vintage sweater. It is so hard to resist when they are always $18 or less. Went here because I saw 44 reviews and almost four stars.On arrival, can't say that I was exactly thrilled. I saw some vintage items...and then I saw items which I would deem as just reckless. Upon further searching of everyone else's review, I guess I didn't have any "luck" that day with finding anything? These reviews are more back round stories than a real review of the products.... The owner was nice and courteous. A few of the dresses were gorgeous but not my size. I understand that, seeing as its a thrift store....but the rest of it is not mention worthy. The shoe selection was atrocious, not because it was a small selection, but because they were scuffy and dirty. I may go here again and try my luck because everyone seems to love this place. I agree, Kate Goldwater is very, very nice and makes the atmosphere of the store that much better. The store itself is fairly small, so I personally would recommend going during the week to avoid the rush of the weekend. She has various jewerly items--necklaces, earrings, and handmade ones that you can string together yourself (she said her friends made the pieces--they ranged from colorful balls to a watermelon slice) As for the clothes, there were two racks. There were some brands you would recognize--H&M, Banana Republic, however there wasn't a ton of those types. I personally liked the reworked creations--they even had nice, homemade looking tags on them. I was eyeing a really nice skirt for $45 but I don't wear skirts that often (or at all) but I am already thinking about going back and buying it. Those pieces were unique. There were also t-shirts, some shoes and dresses. A few were reworked out of a one-piece bathing suit, and they actually looked good! To put it bluntly, AuH2O has an awesome selection of clothing. The selection also changes all the time which is dope. They have a $5 and $10 dollar rack, and anything that doesn't sell eventually goes down the racks -- I got a beautiful multi-colored shiny skirt from the $10 one, and have seen everything from belts and bags to coats and dresses on the $5 one. For those interested in designer clothing, they have interesting items that come in from time to time. I saw a pair of Prada shoes and a pair of Gucci shoes in the window. The people who work there are also mad friendly and really chill, with interesting lives and good stories to tell. It's a nice change from store owners who barely make eye-contact with customers. Very very tiny thrift store in the East Village, but like all thrift stores, you really never know what you will stumble upon. Picked up two nice silk/faux silk scarves the other day, so really your mileage will vary. You just need to be patient! Prices are reasonable and the clothes are not high end. If you're looking for high end clothes go across the street to Tokio7. That said, all the clothes are gently worn and presentable. No weird thrift store smells and everything is very presentable. read more

Okay.. I finally mustered up the courage to write a review about this place. So here are the deets. 1. Its a small shop. Definitely. And its located on a side street, so you have to look very carefully for it. But you'll find it. 2. Let's be honest. When you go thrifting, it truly is a hit or miss, like every place is. But I really liked what I saw. I was able to buy a top from there, and I loved their bag and jewelry selection. 3. Prices are VERY reasonable. The top that I bought was around $12. Sweet. 4. There was only one person working there when I got there, not sure if she was the owner, but she was very chill, and complimented what I picked out. 5. I would recommend that if you did not find anything the first time, go back again. You never know what you may find. But I will definitely be back there :) read more

This a cool thrift shop. It is extremely small but definitely worth a trip cuz they have really nice things. The shoes were really cute but I have small feet so none of them were my size. The selection here is very limited, just a few racks and a disinterested and moody sales girl (you are getting paid to serve us right?!) The clothes they have aren't great vintage finds. Everything is a bit 'Urban Outfitters Originals' and will remind you of freshmen who just discovered vinyl. There is nothing that you couldn't thrift yourself... however the prices are GREAT. I really uncharacteristically cheap for this neighbourhood (tops from $10, jackets from $20) I would say this place is worth going to ONLY if you live locally and need a last minute outfit on the cheap for Saturday night. read more

AuH20 is my favorite boutique in the Village as it is filled with good fitting finds in excellent nick. The prices are completely reasonable (almost cheap) for a second hand store and the vintage variety is a lot of fun. Some of the clothes I wouldn't know how to pair or pull on (some smaller sizing); however the ladies working will always help you out, without ever being pushy or intrusive on your shopping turn about the small sweet store. Au+H2O = Goldwater = AWESOME Hands down my favorite thrift store in the city. The selection is carefully curated, perfectly organized, AND reasonably priced. In a world where $50 for a t-shirt is the thrifting norm (what would Macklemore say?), AuH2O is a breath of fresh air. Love the $5 rack and the $10 or less section! Don't let the small size of the store fool you--it's packed with special pieces in pristine condition. I honestly try on half of merchandise in the store each time I go in. Highly recommend checking this place out. There's a good mixture of casual and dressy pieces and the prices are incredibly reasonable. I purchased some jewelry, namely a cute xoxo ring for $15, a red express sweater jacket for $18 and a simple black and white striped dress for around $12-15. There were some stunning formal dresses that I really wanted to purchase but I was traveling and it made little practical sense to do so but I highly recommend going here to find a cocktail dress. read more

What a great little shop! I am still coming down from my East Village vintage shopping high days later. I stopped in this little spot after reading great reviews on Yelp and was not disappointed! The cashier was SO sweet, not sure if she was the owner or not-I think she may have been. She let me know about their promo-write a Yelp review and get 25% off one item-and was so fun to chat with! I got a great little purse and couldn't get enough of the jewelry. The prices were very reasonable and the store was neat and tidy. I really wanted to like this place since I had been reading the owners blog for years, but I didn't find anything I like when I went which really disappointed me. I think you have to be really really really fashion forward to wear some of the stuff here because otherwise, you end up standing in front of the mirror in the dressing room and thinking how stupid you look in Ugg boots and the granny dress with the doily neckline detail. The prices are dirt cheap which is awesome. I guess its like any other thrift-type store you go to. It's all about luck. I will keep going back until I find something I like. Thrift and vintage shopping is usually overpriced in the Villages, but this shop is affordable to all and emphasizes recycling perfectly good used clothing. The owner's curating ability is phenomenal with a choice of accessible items without choosing just the flamboyant vintage items. The two at the shop were very welcoming and made it enjoyable to shop; I felt like I was with friends and could jump in on their conversation at any times - it helps that the shop is one small room. They also offer a 15% student discount on Thursdays, on top of already low-priced $5-$10 racks. Women's clothing only at the moment, but I'm sure if they venture into men's clothing it will all be fantastic. read more

Definetely, I will say that their sense of style for a thrift store is absolutely amazing! Chic and trendy clothes everywhere. Though it is quite small compared to other thrift stores, their clothes quality and neatness compensates that. Some of the clothes are a bit expensive here unlike other places like a pair of pants for 20$. Then again the 10$ and below section have quite fair deals. HOWEVER, although I enjoyed looking around, I did not buy anything due to the fact that all the clothes I was interested in had some kind of nasty stain on them. I went to AuH2O purposefully after reading reviews on here last night about what a wonderful thrift shop it is and I've got to say I'm impressed.. I am very new to thrifting so it was refreshing to have a small collection to go through as opposed to mounds of clothing like other thrift stores. Just as in any other thrift shop sizes are limited so you basically have to take what you can get if you're chubs like I am but the selection is great, nice jewelry pieces and the bags are awesome! I've been here a couple of times over the course of this summer and yeah, the array of clothing is pretty varied. They have more shirts/some dresses than pants but that's alright since I don't look for pants. They have a small fitting room at the end corner of the store, so that's a bonus :D There are bracelets, earrings, necklaces, some decent looking bags, pins, and maybe some other stuff I haven't looked into yet. I find the necklaces and earrings to be 'gold in the mine' worthy. They're unique and the majority are in good condition. The store is pretty small and the outside window sure does attract people. Only one person working there and she's nice. I find it adorably cute and funny that she play music off of her laptop c: The prices aren't all OH-MY-GAHD-Y-U-SO-PRICEY so there's no worry about that. You may come across some things that will have a higher price (mainly the bags and some shirts/blouses) but ehh, it's okay. Maybe I came on an off-day, but this place was just a little under OK. I walked in with another person - the lady at the counter (I'm not sure if it was the owner or who it was), barely even glanced up. No hello, welcome, nothing. For such a small store this was a little unnerving. The merchandise was thrifted items cleaned up a bit, nothing spectacular or a great deal. I tried something on and it was too big, but there was no mention of a comped alteration that other reviews have alluded to. When I went to the front to look at jewelry the woman at the front looked miffed that I was even in her air (she glanced at me with a few dirty looks). All in all, not the best service, and not the best selection. Sure its fine to pop in but I wouldn't make a trip just for this store. In a word - forgettable. read more

This is probably my favorite shop in the East Village. What a quaint collection of vintage and used clothing! Most of the clothes are $30 or less. Whaaaat?! I'd expect these kinds of prices at musty thrift stores that require hours of searching through racks and racks of old, worn clothes just to find that needle in a haystack. Not so at AuH2O. All the items are clean and in good condition, and they're carefully picked so you don't have to spend a lot of time digging for gems. Even though the store is really small, the staff give you space and don't watch you like hawks when you're browsing. The owner is really friendly and easy to chat with. I found a gorgeous vintage dress in mint green, and since I came on a Thursday (15% student discount day!), I got it for a steal. I have no idea when or where I'll be able to wear it, so I may just have to come up with my own special occasion to dress up. Just a small note: I believe there's a $15 minimum on credit card purchases, so you might want to keep cash handy. This is something New Yorkers are probably used to, but being from Pittsburgh, I'm used to getting away with not carrying cash. read more

This is my all-time favorite thrift shop, period. The clothes are affordable and super-adorable and the women who work there are all such sweethearts! This store is PERFECT for girls from teens to twenties who are looking for fun, offbeat, inexpensive, artsy clothes for any occasion. I'm always recommending this shop to EVERYONE because I love both the clothes and the story behind it (the woman who started it wanted to make really cool vintage clothes available to college students who couldn't necessarily afford the ridiculously overpriced shops in the city--like the rest of the thrift stores on St. Marks.) I have never ever ever walked out of the store without buying something, and neither have anyone I've taken there. There are always too many great finds to pass up. This is a great place to shop for (just to name a few highlights): --chunky knit sweater/cardigans (I bought a great one for $15 a month ago and haven't taken it off since) --maxi skirts/kilts/schoolgirl skirts--there are tons of floorlength-skirts that aren't your typical flowy bohemian cliche--there are long wool plaids, black velvet, dark florals, gauze, short grey/plaid schoolgirl kilts, etc --DRESSES. the selection is small but really well curated and SO inexpensive. My favorite dress I found here is a black-and-oxblood floral velvet cocktail dress that was only $18 and looks like it cost five times that. --jewlery--the selection is super varied and very well priced--there are beautiful cameos, tons of rings and earrings (real or clip-on), brooches, all different necklaces, and a fun $1 bin to hunt through full of costume jewelry, cheap but cute bracelets, and quirky pins. There are also great jackets, boots, sometimes purses--really anything. It's a tiny store, but it's the perfect size to find what you love right in the first few minutes (of course, I've spent hours in there, but just for fun.) If you're young and in the city, this store is just a few blocks from the NYU stop and is SO worth the trip! read more
