Wow, what a place. The lodge is 30 minutes outside of all the stores in Fairbanks. We were in the Cedar Lodge Room #4 and we had a great view of the Northern Lights. We're the lights all centered right in front of our GIGANTIC windows, of course not. You'd be silly to think the lights are going to show up in one, or even two, central areas. Get out and look around, they were everywhere when we went. The two queen beds were VERY comfortable, the place was clean, nice showers, a bidet, the cutest kitchenette (with a full size oven), coffee maker, little fridge, and more. We had plenty of towels for our 4 night stay and the heater worked excellent. Mok, and his wife Akiko, are two business people who really want their guests to have the best experience possible. He plowed the roads daily since we were there in winter (2/23 through 2/27/23). He has a plug in for your car. There are walkie talkies in each room and you can message each other if one of you see the light so everyone can be notified.

Staying at the Aurora Borealis Lodge was a phenomenal experience! We stayed in Cedar Lodge 4 which was an amazing room. The beds were extremely comfortable. The kitchen had anything you could need, we used the toaster oven to heat up pizza, the refrigerator for a gallon of milk, the microwave to make our hot cocoa, and the coffee pot. We didn't use the full-size stove with oven. The cabinets were full of anything you could possibly need. The heated toilet seat and bidet were a bonus! The heater kept the room toasty warm. The water was hot, and the shower head was like being at home. The walkie-talkie in the room was very useful for making sure we knew the aurora was visible! The 2 large windows were our television! Mok is the lodge owner, and he makes sure your stay is amazing! Prior to our stay Mok sent emails. The day of our stay Mok texted information. It was very snowy and cloudy when we arrived. The parking area was plowed, and the walkway were cleared of snow. Mok set up a text group with everyone letting us know he would be in the main lodge between 10:30pm-2:00am and if he seen any aurora in this timeframe he would let us know. Mok sent us a link for a webcam. We took a nap and set an alarm for 10:30pm. We woke up to Mok on the walkie-talkie saying the aurora was visible. We went to the lodge and we were greeted by Mok who helped us set our phones for an optimal photo taking experience. Mok took our photo with the aurora. Mok texted photos that he took. After a while we went back to our room. At 1:00am, the room was lit up by the beautiful aurora and Mok was on the walkie-talkie! I highly recommend staying at the Aurora Borealis Lodge and we will stay here again!!!

"Make voyages. Attempt them. There's nothing else." ~Tennesse Williams, Camino Real - It's 20 miles north of Fairbanks with virtually no light pollution to see Aurora Borealis! That sounded good. I left Fairbanks at 10pm, so that's when the adventure was supposed to attend. An aurora, also known as the polar lights or aurora polaris, is a natural light display in Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions. Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky. It's a remote location, but the "Lodge' was more of a house with a tall deck, and it was surrounded by trees. I heard later that the Aurora was great that night, but not visible from the so-called Lodge. The "Lodge" would not be my first choice or my second choice or my third choice to try to see the Aurora. It's greatly overrated! -

Visiting Fairbanks for the first time. To try to see the aurora borealis. Searched online and found ABL. And it did live up to its name and the hype. First of all you will have to book this place a year in advance. Yes it's that popular. And for good reasons This is a family owned place. With 2 separate cabins available to choose from. We stayed at the Logan Chalet. Private cabin to yourselves. While the bigger cabin up the hill can house more groups. I was glad we chose LC as we traveled with a small child. The cabin is impeccable. With 2 beds in the loft and one in the downstairs room. Super clean. Love the fact that guests are required to remove shoes while indoor. Bathroom equipped with heated toilet seat. There's enough heating within the lodge, which is a must in the subzero temperature when visiting in the winter. Location is perfect. You are situated at the top of a hill with perfect view of the aurora. Along with the fact that it's out of the way from the city light pollution. We were super fortunate that we saw the lights every night we stayed. We stayed total 4 nights. And the 4th night nature graced us with a big finale. A truly amazing and surreal experience to see the splendor of the aurora. Mok the owner is super responsive via email and texts. Very accommodating and always alerts you when the aurora appears in the middle of the night. A truly professional and above and beyond service. Highly recommend for anyone to stay here that are visiting Fairbanks to see the aurora. You will not disappoint !!

Had such a nice time staying at the Aurora Borealis Lodge. We stayed in the Cedar Lodge which had a little kitchen and two queen beds. It was very cozy and not too far from Fairbanks. Unfortunately it was pretty cloudy during our stay, but we were fortunate to catch the Aurora Borealis on our last night there. The lodge is away from light pollution and offers you a great opportunity to see the lights. Mok, the lodge owner, was very great! If I had any questions he responded very promptly. He also constantly sent info about how/when to see the Aurora Borealis. Would definitely recommend!

First of all, this tour was amazing and I'm sorry for taking so long to add a review. I went up to Fairbanks with 5 friends to view the Northern Lights. Stayed at a home in town. Most tour companies would only pick up from certain hotels in town. I reached out to Aurora Borealis Lodge and Mok was quick to respond and willing to pick us up. Any time I had a question, Mok responded in less than a day. On the night of excursion, Mok picked us up and we learned he was the owner of the lodge along with his wife. He was friendly, helpful and willing to answer any questions from the group. In the lodge, Mok offered coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. The lodge was warm and had a restroom. We could chill in the warmth of the lodge until Northern lights appeared and then we had the option of a large deck to take photos or videos. I will be reaching out next time I head to Fairbanks. I would totally recommend this.

TL:DR--great experience, definitely recommended for Aurora viewing. It was my last night in Fairbanks. I had unsuccessfully attempted to see the lights the first 2 nights. There was a small showing in Livengood, but it was nothing much. On the day before my last night, I used the morning to call around to see if tours were available to pick up a single traveler. My travel partner was leaving earlier than I was so I was going to give it one last ditch effort. Some places weren't doing tours, some were full. Some I didn't choose because of the reviews. I called Aurora Borealis Lodge and Mok contacted me back, but we weren't sure the weather would cooperate. It had become cloudy and I resigned myself to not seeing the Aurora. He told me that he would let me know if it cleared up. On his way to pick up other guests, he called to report that he had seen one star! There was hope! I wasn't fully convinced but figured I'd give it a shot anyway. He picked me up from my hotel in Fairbanks at 10pm. And I am so glad I went! I got some great shots of the Lights! Thanks to Mok, I got to see the Aurora! Mok was very friendly and kind. He even helped everyone adjust their camera settings. The viewing cabin was warm with plenty of couches and INDOOR bathrooms. The deck was large enough for several people to stand out at once to see the lights. He made sure everyone wore masks for Covid safety and he had plenty of hand sanitizer. Mok picked me up in a minivan. It was clean and he was a very safe driver. From my understanding, other guests can drive to the lodge (several did). Also, there is lodging on the property where you can actually stay overnight. Some of those guests joined us for Aurora viewing too. My only suggestion would be to include apple cider among the hot drinks. That's the most minor observation possible. Because realistically this was a great experience from start to finish. Definitely would recommend!

Enjoyed so much during our stay. Wonderful place. Thank you Mok!! Only thing to remember is to bring your own food or you'll have to Uber long way to downtown

    Thanks again, Mok!

We stayed for 3 nights in Room 1 on the second floor and it was a dream come true! This experience meant a lot to us and booking with Mok was probably the best decision of our trip. He was responsive to our e-mails and even more friendly in person. We missed a turn on our way to check-in and our rental car got stuck in the snow. It was sheer coincidence when Mok drove by and offered to help us out! The room itself is phenomenal. Big windows, strong heater, and don't get me started with that Japanese toilet. I may be easily amused, but I can't emphasize enough on how cozy, comfortable, and convenient it was to view nature's best dance show in your pajamas with a cup of hot cocoa. There's not much cell reception, but there's wifi! The bedside walkie talkies to alert sleeping guests are a nifty little amenity, too. My favorite part absolutely has to be our souvenir photo!

This is a very nice place to be on a trip. If the aurora appears, the landlord will use the walkie-talkie to tell you in time. We were lucky to see a very large aurora on the first night. I love it here. Mok has been very helpful to us. 100% recommended.

Nice lodge for Aurora Borealis viewing. Owner Mok was pretty nice. His lodge was spacious and had large windows for viewing the northern lights indoors to keep warm and a spacious deck area outside to take photos. Overall experience took about 3 hours. We went there and inside were plenty of hot tea, hot chocolate and coffee. Plate full of cookies to enjoy as well. I spent majority of time outside trying to see the lights. After several tries with my GoPro camera I finally was able to get a good photo. The evening was partly cloudy so it was hard to see the lights but I saw plenty of shooting stars, Big Dipper, and tons of beautiful scenery. Mok took professional photos as well and his camera definitely captured the northern lights. Worth paying for those photos because he emails you those digital files for you to keep. We finally saw the northern lights that shined brighter at 2 am. Yeah!!!

Seeing the Aurora Borealis was on my bucket list so after careful planning a year ahead, we arrived to our cozy, clean, and comfortable room with a beautiful view (we stayed in #4 so we did not have to do stairs because of my husband knee replacements - however when we arrived there were about 5 stairs to get up to our door, but no problem). The beds were very comfy, the couch nice too, and the kitchen was nice - with a decent freezer & refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, and stove-top & oven. Coffee is provided in the room. No blender though, and limited cooking tools. Several wine openers in our room! We had to put coffee filters in the strainer so our spagetti did not slip through the large holes! I loved the Washlet toilet and want one for my house! We got to see the Aurora Borealis the 1st 3 nights, and each night the lights got better! The 3rd night they were good enough that we left our cozy view from our room to go outside the lodge and have Mok take a photo! So happy we timed that right! The 4th night, our last, was cloudy all night, so NO lights! I was surprised that the Aurora Borealis lights were mostly white, with a slight green color the last night, usually the colors only showed up on film. It was fun to watch them change, but I was a little disappointed that we got no real colors. It was so quiet, peaceful, and gorgeous that we just stayed there the whole 4 days and took walks each day to enjoy the scenery (we had bought plenty of food). We met Mok's sweet wife during the day when she was there to work on laundry. Mok was there a lot to work too. He is there to host a tour group from 10pm-2am too! Both were very friendly & helpful. We spent a long day in Fairbanks after our stay, and some time there before too.

Recently got back from an AMAZING week at Aurora Borealis Lodge & am still basking in the Northern Lights glow! Science Lesson: The sun's energy-output cycles roughly every 11-years. Sunspots increase / build up energy, which is released as massive bursts of solar wind. When the energetic charged particles from the solar winds hit the Earth, they can cause a geomagnetic storm in Earth's magnetosphere...and when those charged particles collide with atoms in our atmosphere, they produce pretty colors.... what we call an Aurora. 2013 was the peak of this current 11 yr cycle This lodge boasts the ability to view the Northern Lights from the comfort of your very own warm, cozy room & reading this was all it took for us to immediately contact them for reservations! Best Tip: No matter when you are in the cycle, you want to book ABL as far in advance as you can - we booked our room almost 15 months ahead of time & didn't get the week we originally wanted & even then still got their last room....& we see they're already booked for a lot of 2014!! Located about 45 min outside Fairbanks, leads us to Tip #2 - be sure to stop by the Fred Meyer to stock up on groceries & drinkys before heading up the mountain..... but if you need odds & ends & aren't adverse to discards, there's also a "communal grocery box" in the Main Lodge, from those who donated leftover supplies after they left The room setup is exceptional - 2 really comfy beds w/ fluffy pillows; shower w/ lots of water pressure; state of the art heated seat bidets, full kitchen & extra cold storage right outside our door, & the piece de resistance, the coziest couch to spend our days gazing upon the lush snowy scenery & our nights gazing upon the spectacular Northern Lights We were in Room #3 & our advice is to ignore those who say the upstairs rooms are the best - we felt like we definitely had the best room of the lodge & would choose this specific room again! 2 *huge* windows looking to the north & another window facing east - we got the full suite of Northern Lights viewing....as it tended to show along the northern horizon. Our room was also the only room that had its own little balcony - we could step right out of our door & there was a nice platform on which to place our tripod....or walk down 7-8 stairs for the bigger deck ( which every other room had to walk around the building to get to ) 3rd Tip: Make sure you have a really, really, really nice camera. Thank goodness the Mr did as my Sony Cybershot captured *zero* photo-quality Lights activity Rooms are also extremely well insulated from both weather & sound. We stayed toasty warm the whole time & never heard a peep from the outdoors Best case in point: the lodge hosts nightly viewing tours from hotels down in Fairbanks & those people were extremely noisy as witnessed by the incessant chanting & cheering as the lights twirled & swirled across the sky. We only heard the crowd literally after stepping outside - absolutely nothing could be heard while inside - impressive! And as far as hearing our neighbors, there were zero voices & only a few footsteps from above but it wasn't nearly as bad as what we hear on a daily basis, back home in our apartment Walkie-Talkies are at the ready, to alert us to Northern Lights activity & we were extremely thankful, since we dozed off most nights, while trying to stay vigilant.....we'd have missed the lightshow had it not been for Mok. Showing up anywhere from 10pm to 3:30am, Mok was watching the skies & alerts were coming whenever the Lights made their appearance Speaking of.......Mok & Logan are superstars! We felt extremely well taken care of & their Lab Sitka was an adorable lovebug....& he loves the butt-scratch! Before our stay, we were pretty depressed by the cloudy / overcast weather forecast for the week we visited but Mok assured us not to pay attention since the lodge is above most of the Fairbanks weather & he was so right! So the rundown of our 6 nights at ABL: 5 clear nights; 4.5 w/ Lights ( the 0.5 refers to 1 cloudy night that cleared around 3:30am for a last glimpse of the lightshow ); countless shooting stars; 2 snowmen; 1 snowball; 1 cozy cabin....all adds up to a FABULOUS week up North!

Out of the two days we stayed in the lodge, we saw the aurora borealis both nights!!!! We were fortunate enough to see it, off of our bucket list! (if you want to see it better, bring a digital camera or a professional one for a better view since human eye doesn't really capture the lights) Location: Before we checked in, we made sure to visit other places near the airport, since this lodge is farther from the airport. But heading there is not as bad. When we got there, we were greeted by Jeff. He showed us the place, and he told us he'll give us a knock once the aurora is out. They were right next to a little trail, so we managed to hike it for a bit before the sun set. Room: Our room was simple, but cute and rustic. It had two beds, but the main bed is so comfortable that we slept so well! It's also near a window that has amazing view of the trees and mountains. When we arrived, the sun was barely setting and it was breathtaking! Shared bathroom--it's not that awkward at all. Just make sure you always lock your door if not used, and locked the other room's door if you're using it. Food: Breakfast is part of the cost, but you can tell them ahead of time if you want lunch and/or dinner. Of course, there's a charge. They also sell beverages such as water, soda and alcohol. You can either pay cash or add it to your payment. They have microwave and complimentary food and drinks such as tea, coffee, muffins, and other snacks. Feel free to go to downstairs to hang out there, watch tv, relax on the couch, etc. Lori was so nice, that we didn't really make it for breakfast since we woke up late but she still made us eggs and toasted bread!! We missed their dogs Hank and Blaze! They were very friendly and playful. Overall, it was a great experience staying in this lodge. It's a family run; we even met this one lady who helped us the way to get to Chena Hot Springs.

We ordered the Little Chena and Big Chena. I definitely recommend going with the Big (or opting for the potatoes and toast with the little), as there was a big difference in for what you get for the cost if you make the error I did with the Little...one pancake and 2 eggs for $17.50, that was a dumb mistake on my part. As for the food, pretty good overall. Eggs cooked, potatoes, and bacon all cooked well...pancake a bit rubbery for me.

Instead of pushing forward anyway, they upgraded us to their Yurt experience, which was the perfect solution. We could stay warm inside and step outside only when the aurora appeared, warming up in between with hot chocolate, coffee, and soup. One unexpected bonus was that the yurt next to us was offering dog sled rides, so we got to see a dog sled team up close, and that was also an option we could have added. It was a really fun and unique part of the experience. Our driver and guide, Zach, was fantastic. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and very accommodating, and shared great insights about the aurora, Alaska's history, and geography. He was also very honest when he did not know something and tried to find the answer. The next night at the hot springs, we ran into Paul, another guide from 1st Alaska Tours who was leading a different group. He was just as friendly and helpful and offered some great tips, which really says a lot about the company. If you are considering an aurora tour in Fairbanks, 1st Alaska Tours is a great choice. I do apologize for my photography skills and the video was from inside the yurt!

When we arrived at about 10:30, the Lights were in primitive, foggy form but they steadily got better as time passed, ebbing and flowing in intensity, stretching all the way across the sky at times, in a mesmerizing dance of green and purple. We were fortunate, because the aurora forecast was "excellent" (KP 5-6) for the night we went out, something I'd never encountered before in trips to Iceland or Alaska. Our group of 12 had access to its own warm, roomy, window-encircled yurt, much appreciated due to unusually high winds much of the night. An added treat was the appearance of several dog-mushing teams, coursing across the expanse in front of us. I can't wait to do the exact same trip again next year, but I almost didn't make this one. Although the tour was fully booked when I called 1st Alaska on the day of the trip, they were kind enough to call me back when they received a cancellation, for which I will always be grateful.

I can't possibly put into words how wonderful our experience was here…read more Our original dog sled ride elsewhere was cancelled due to weather, but that operator told us to try Friendly Arctic Adventures, which we had not heard of. Thom (the owner) was able to get us in on short notice. We had booked just the short sled ride, but when we got there learned we could have the option of driving our own team. My wife opted to ride in the sled, but I decided to go for it. At the end of the training session I was overwhelmed and doubted my ability to do it, but with my heart racing I decided I had to try. It was the single most amazing experience of my life. I harnessed one of my dogs, petted them all, and we rode the trails for what had to have been at least an hour. After the ride Thom gave us booties for one of our own dogs who likes to play in the snow but his paws always freeze up. My only regret about the whole adventure is that I missed feeding salmon to my team because I went back into the cabin to warm up when we were done. So now I have to come back to Fairbanks to do it again and give my dogs extra salmon. :)

There was a slight booking error so I had to push my tour back a day (no biggie) but Thom was super apologetic and worked with me as much as he could and went above & beyond for my tour to make it memorable. I seriously couldn't have asked for a better day and it ended my trip on such a high note! His cabin has extra gear and he makes sure you are dressed properly and ready to be out in the elements, he explained everything very thoroughly to make sure I understood what I would be doing. It was only me for the tour, so I helped him harness the dogs and get set up and by then my heart was racing & so was my mind thinking, "what did I get myself into??" LOL it all happens so fast but it's SUCH A BLAST!! These dogs live to run and they love it! They take such good care of them and love them like family, they are not abused or left out in the cold. They make sure they are all happy and healthy. We stopped now and then to check on the dogs and take pics, and he would turn back now and then to take video and pics of me to send to me later. I had no idea it would be so much work - but I was sore for a good 2 days hahaha. It could have been from gripping the sled so hard (don't do that! lol ) and the couple of falls I took, one of which was on ice. But it happens and the dogs know to stop when the sled falls over. But you have to be quick getting back on! This was such a memorable, amazing, incredible, once in a lifetime memory and I will never forget it - happy birthday, merry christmas and happy new year to me!! :) :) I couldn't recommend Thom and Friendly Arctic Adventures more - book them and you won't be sorry!

The home fries were very seasoned and tasted unlike any I have had before, but they were very good. There is no way to convey the character and unique coolness of this restaurant. The owner spoke with us several times and was very enjoyable. All of the staff we encountered were very pleasant. This place is worth the drive and a highlight of our Alaska trip.
