My experience with Austin Children's Dentistry was extremely disappointing. I initially visited for my daughter's dental treatment and was given a written treatment estimate of approximately $1,100. When I tried to schedule the appointment, I was told I had to pay 50% of the treatment cost upfront before they would even book the appointment. While I wasn't happy about that policy, I accepted it. The following week, I returned for my daughter's cavity treatment and was shocked to receive a new estimate of $1,800--about $700 more than the quote I had signed the previous week. When I questioned the difference and pointed out that I had already signed the earlier estimate, the staff eventually changed the bill back to the original amount. This experience left me feeling frustrated and concerned about the consistency and transparency of their billing practices. Patients should be able to trust that a written treatment estimate will be honored unless there is a clear explanation for any changes. Running a healthcare practice requires honesty, transparency, and ethical business practices. Unexpectedly increasing a treatment estimate by hundreds of dollars without explanation is unacceptable and undermines patient trust. I hope the practice reviews its billing procedures so that other families do not have a similar experience. read more

Caution! The boilerplate they make you sign in order for your child to receive any treatment gives them broad rights to all of your child's medical data and imagery. They can share for scientific or teaching purposes at will but also have very broad "publication" rights with no limits on monetizing your child's medical data without any further notification or approval from the parent. If you object to that clause they will simply cancel the appointment, if you want your child's private medical data to remain private they don't want you as a customer. To me, any business that is that adamant about having rights to the patient's data is a business I don't trust with said data. Edit to add: I see the business owner responded to my review with a generic "we adhere to all HIPAA regulations". While technically true, by requiring all patients' guardians to sign the release or refusing treatment they are requiring all of their customers to "voluntarily" (as a prerequisite for service) give up significant rights granted by HIPAA. So yes, they are following HIPAA but doing so by requiring their patients to release them from complying with important confidentiality rules that HIPAA provides them (thus nullifying significant portions of HIPAA that they are choosing to comply with). Quite a misleading response and again indicative of how important it is for them to have rights to your data they otherwise would not under law (HIPAA). This makes me very suspect of their motives as it would be simple to just change the policy and make giving up your rights under federal law optional (they refused when asked). Further, if their desire for those data were truly for rare and exceptional cases (e.g. they've spotted a rare cancer during a routine imaging) then they should absolutely be communicating with the patient's guardian about that rare case and it would not be a significant burden to then ask for permission to share those data at that time. In my opinion it is clear that they want to collect blanket rights to all data they collect and I'm suspect of the motives for any business wanting those sort of rights to children's medical data. read more

I have been going to this dentistry since 2017. it has declined considerably with the staff turnovers and doctors. But my experience today was an absolute nightmare eye opening experience. My Child was there for his yearly visit exam. He took his cleaning and X-rays like a champ. During our visit all I heard was curdling screams and terr from a small child. It was heart wrenching and traumatic. I had to intervene and ask the dental team what the heck was happening. This was abuse! the parents did seem educated enough help their own child. The medical staff should've done their job properly instead to advocate for the child. my last few dental appointments haven't been exeptíonal anyway. My 13 year old said this experience was heartbreaking never again. So we're done. read more

By far the best dentist my family has been to! My mom recommended this dentist after taking all the foster children and little brothers here for the last four years. The receptionists were so helpful and willing to answer all our questions and get our appointments set up for both our girls to go at the same time. Shout out to Ellie and Victor who were our nurse, they were so sweet and kind with our girls. Both our girls had cavities and Ellie and Victor took all the pictures and everything they needed to get done was done professionally and efficiently. The doctor was very skilled and handled everything above and beyond our expectation. We came in and received the treatment our daughter needed all in one visit! We visited two other dentist and both had to refer us out to other people. We will be coming here for all our dentist appointments from now on! Thank you! read more

Dr. H Lin left a hole in my tooth after a filling. i felt the drill slip and hit the wrong tooth. she ignored it, finished the tooth she was working on, and sent me home without fixing it. when i came back next business day she interrupted me multiple times to say i "probably popped a filling or ate some chips or something" or that i was just "more aware of how my teeth feel now" and to schedule to get it fixed. i had to make her pull my x-rays for her to acknowledge her mistake and stop speaking over me and dismissing me. she rudely "fixed" it and the "fix" has had a crack in it that tears my floss since i got it. i complained and was told it was just catching because its a new filling. The crack caused a cavity despite daily brushing and flossing. If no stars was an option i would have chose that. read more

Called in a Saturday to get an appointment for my 2 years old daughter, even though the Pediatrician wasn't there I went. The general dentist found what was wrong with my daughter and recommended some food supplements since she wasn't eating too much, she was very caring. This place is run like a factory. We are on our third dentist. They simply try to find any upgrade or service they can sell to bill you or your insurance company. One dentist said my daughter had 4 cavities, when we came back the next dentist said, sorry only two and one of those is really minor. The last straw was today when we had a scheduled appointment for my son and they called my wife at 4:58 on a Friday and said to call back to confirm or they will cancel our appointment. (they close at 5:00). Obviously no one answered when she called back at 5:01. And today (Monday) they had cancelled my sons appointment because we didn't call them back in a 2 minute window. Clearly they don't give a crap about customer service, or their patients or anything other than money. Stay away. Stay far away. It's not worth your time or your kids health. read more

Today was my daughter's first time trying x rays and sitting in the big girl chair! She is only 3 and was nervous, but Dr Shau and Gala were so kind and patient with her! She took x rays and got her cleaning done in the big chair, definitely recommending to friends especially with young children. I took my daughter this morning for her 1st appointment with Dr.Shau and it exceeded my expectations. From the moment we walked in I loved it all. The office was extremely clean and super kid friendly. The front desk staff was helpful and professional and I appreciated Edith's patience with me in setting up appointment for my twins while they were being loud in the background. Jade Dr. Shau's M.A was extremely friendly and so sweet to my girls. Dr Shau the same thing. He was gentle and patient with my daughter since she did not have a good experience with her previous dentist. I appreciated the fact they took her to a smaller room to make her more comfortable and allowed for her to sit with me while the doctor examined her carefully. I felt so comfortable from beginning to end and am happy that I found a doctor/office my girls can be excited to go to. Thank you!! read more

Let me set the scene: 1st time parents. 17 month old falls and chips/cracks/breaks his front tooth. We don't know - it's gone. He is bleeding and crying. We are panicked about what is going on and what we should do. After taking the proper steps to make sure he was in no immediate danger or pain, we went to sleep for the evening (This happened at 7 pm). The next morning, I called a different Pediatric dental practice with the help of Yelp and they were unable to see our son and referred us to Austin Children's Dentistry. I figured if another Dentist is referring to Austin Children's Dentistry, let's go. I didn't know what to expect and we were very pleased. We saw Dr. Nelson, who was so different from the "scary" Pediatric Dentist I saw as a child. He was friendly, warm, and tried to put our baby at ease while he looked in his mouth to see what damage was done. Thankfully, his tooth was pushed up into his gum and not broken so he told us to watch it and it should come down on it's own. He explained so much to us about what to look for, and really put our minds at ease. He took my anxiety about the situation from a 10 to a 1 in 15 minutes. Our son wasn't on our Dental insurance yet so they did a complimentary thorough exam of him! We have found our son's Pediatric Dentist. Their office isn't showy or flashy but they are caring, and thorough. That's more important to me anyway. read more

We have been taking my 3 year old and 5 year old here for the last year and a half and have never had a problem here. Only great things to say about this place. As you enter, they have a small play area to the right for the children to play, a television that is usually playing shows for kids not any adult talkshows or anything and right in the middle of the waiting area is a saddle :) From the front office, hygienists and dentists, everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful with anything that is needed and done during the appointment. They do their best to make your child comfortable, explain what they are doing to not only the parent but to the child to make them feel more at ease..We have had nothing but a great experience here and will continue to come here. read more

Brought my child for his 6 month check-up; this was the worst appointment ever!!! The dental assistance was so so rude to my artistic son; I will never subject him to inhumane treatment at the facility ever again!!! He told the assistant that she was hurting him during the calcium removal process and she rudely told him, "I am not hurting you, this process does not hurt!!! I told her his teeth was extra sensitive; she didn't care!!! After polishing his teeth, the water rinse was super cold so my child ask her to use warm water and she REFUSED; she never adjusted the water temperature!!! He asked her to rinse he grittiness out his mouth and she REFUSED!!! She told him, "I'll just let the dentist finish/deal with you!!!" She walked out angry at my child for no apparent reason!!! WTH...I thought a children's dentistry specialize in dealing with children, evidently NOT this dentistry!!! NEVER RETURNING!!! read more

We went for my toddlers first checkup. They do a free first visit which doesn't include cleaning- just a checkup. Let me start by saying that I agree with the other reviewers about how friendly and polite everyone is here. That's why i gave them 2 stars. However, there were several other reasons that I won't be returning. 1. I had to wait an hour and a half for the dentist (we saw Liz Montero) to spend 2 minutes looking in my toddlers mouth. When the hygienist asked the dentist if she wanted to do a cleaning even though it's not included (I presume to try to compensate for my wait) Dr Montero said "no, that's ok." No one offered any explanation as to why we had to wait so long. 2. It was dirty. Dust everywhere, dirty floors, the place where you brush your teeth was gross. They should hire a cleaning service. 3. The hygienist asked about bottle feeding. I said no bottle, she still nurses some. She said "that's great you're breastfeeding. we would never discourage breastfeeding, but you really need to stop after one year." !?!?! I can understand saying to be sure to brush her teeth and not nurse all night (because of tooth decay). But that's not what she said. She told me to stop breastfeeding. 4. Very small spaces. Small waiting room and small room they take you in to talk to the hygienist. read more

I love this place. My THREE YEAR OLD loves this place! Dr Johnson has been seeing my son since he was a tiny little guy. He has always been very patient and kind with him as a baby. Now that my son is three, Dr J jokes around with him and is silly. He almost makes it into a game. He gets my son to cooperate with out even realizing that he's having his mouth examined. The rest of the staff, from front office to assistants are also all very polite and very sweet to my son. I'm very very happy I found this place. read more

I've been taking my 9 year old daughter and my 3 year old son for over a year now and we really like this place. One of things I really like is the fact that they don't have TVs on your face. A TV is not the method they use to distract the children. They actually use positive encouragement and tokens to get toys out of the coin machine. My son was 2 when he went for the first time. I was nervous about how he would act, but the hygienist played with him and explained to him what he was doing, and my son had a good time. My daughter has been treated for cavities in 2 occasions. Everything went smooth and she didn't get nervous or anxious. I would recommend this place for people with young children. read more

I truly cannot thank Dr. Romero and her staff enough. At 3:00 p.m. on a Friday my son fell at his school and injured his teeth quite severely. As Dell Children's even stated when we called, the worse times for a dental emergency is Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays, as most dental offices are closed. Thankfully a friend searched and found Austin Children's Dentistry was still open. We called and they got us in immediately. I wish I had got Dr. Romero's assistant's name that worked with us because she was exceptional. Both Dr. Romero and her assistant along with others stayed over an hour after the office closed to complete the work my son needed. Never once did I feel that they were trying to rush or were even bothered to be staying so late. On another note, while I'm not certain what the going rate for the type of work my son needed is, I was amazed at the low cost of the visit today, especially with all that was required. We had our first visit a few months ago - a cleaning for both my daughters. I loved that I called on a Friday & had an appointment that next day. Yes, a Saturday! Can you imagine how much fun it was to tell my pre-teen she has to get up early on a Saturday for the dentist? I was able to complete the new patient paperwork online so we didn't have piles of forms to deal with when we arrived. The waiting area had a kids play zone but my girls didn't have much time to terrorize it since we were called back so quickly. All the staff were great. I was very impressed by everyone's ability to put my 6 yr old (who had a traumatic experience at a previous dentist) at ease. The little tricks they used were great! This week we had a toothers emergency and they were able to see my daughter immediately on a Monday morning. Again, almost no waiting time and all the staff were welcoming and very good with my child. They ended up referring her to a fantastic oral surgeon that day and the problem was addressed. So far I'm thrilled with these folks! read more

i only gave 1 star bc it was only way to post review. if it possible for me to give none or rate this place with a number it would be -100. first appt we had 2/2023 one of the dental assistants had the worse attitude she was being extremely rough with my kids. she wasnt being sanitary by throwing the tools she used on my kids on the counter not assuring it was on blue pad. she kept huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf! so i had to call manager to address her attitude! she blamed being overworked for her attitude and coming from medical feild myself having attitude bc day is busy is unexceptable!!!!!!! second appt 9/1 refused to see kids because could not make out pdf they sent iver to give consent for grandmother to be with them! i policy but why deny my kids treatment if i authorizyes and sent over form even if form wasnt best you can still treat kids!!!!!!! don't wste money or time this place is racist and all doctors are very unprofessional this place is terrible do not take your children here!!! read more

I took my 4-year-old son in for his first appointment, and was told that he had 8 cavities, would need stainless steel crowns on 6 of his teeth, and would need to go under general anesthesia to do so. I was shocked and horrified at the news. We emailed the x-rays to a friend who is a dentist, and he said the cavities were very small, and didn't need crowns. He also told us that general anesthesia is generally reserved for kids who need extensive work (baby root canals, extensive tooth decay on most teeth, etc...). He told us that we needed to seek a second opinion. I found another pediatric dentist who came highly recommended, and he determined that some changes in diet/drink and oral care would most likely be all the treatment he needed! I actually really liked the hygienist that worked with my son at Austin Children's Dentistry. The staff was very nice, and the office was inviting. I don't believe that the doctor intended anything but good. However, it seemed as though he jumped to an incredibly extreme and somewhat dangerous treatment, that turned out to be very unnecessary. read more

My ex asked me if I could take my son Mason in to get a couple of sealants on his teeth. She has been taking my kids here for a few years now. I get there, check him in, and immediately go to yelp to check in and look at reviews. After my experience I think Amber G is a disgruntled ex employee IMHO . I paid close attention to the instruments they were using on my son. Everything was in separate sealed new medical bags. The room was spotless, and all of the ladies are very friendly. They all greeted Mason by name which I thought was really cool. I wish I would have asked for a few names to mention as no one wears name tags anymore. I'm really not a fan of dentists in general, but I'm glad my ex found this one for my kids. Main was able to go right back to school after his appointment. read more

Well i walk in today and i am told that my appointment is not on the schedule and that they couldn't fit me in but could schedule me for tomorrow. Dr. Chang Ryu and assistant Carman were absolutely wonderful to my daughter today. We had been in a whirlwind of appointments to get an extraction done. Either the other dentists were way overpriced or did not do extractions of small girls and would refer me to another dentist. We had actually gone to three others till a colleague told me to go here and I am so thankful she did. The doctor was genuinely thoughtful and patient and the assistant was caring and supportive. They were able to do the extraction the same day as the consult because they had an opening and they filed the insurance so I only had to pay a little out if pocket. I was a bit nervous bringing my three year old here for the first time after reading some of the reviews. However, I have to say my kiddo left extremely excited about his visit! He went to school telling all his friends about the cool teeth doctors he met this morning! Dr. Chang Ryu and his hygienist Gala were beyond amazing with him. He was super shy coming in and Ms. Gala was amazing with him being so friendly explaining everything to him to make him feel comfortable. I do have to say that the front desk staff are not as friendly or welcoming as the assistants and doctor, however don't let it fool you. It's a great place and I'd recommend to anyone! read more

In the years that we have gone here, we have had such a lapse in communication with appointments, treatment, and professionalism. Our recent visit was so outrageous we actually walked out of the office. Three of my kids were set for orthodontics. The week following is normally nutty. Teeth filled and teeth pulled to prepare for this is common for ortho. Our Ortho was once a dentist prior to settling in orthodontics. After looking at the kid's charts he said what we had felt all along. That Austin Children's Dentistry is very AGGRESSIVE in the way they deal with teeth. When I told them they suggested at one time veneers for one of the kids they were taken back. They recently tried to get me to sign a paper for sealants and when I saw the cost I asked why my insurance (which is excellent) would not pay for this. They said because this is the second time billing me for sealants in the last year and a half. Why do they need them again? Well, She must be chewing something sticky. ..Because of the aggressiveness, the ortho said we needed to go back and get a 2nd opinion on the first doctor's treatment plan. When we went in their 2nd doctor agreed with the ortho that there was a lesser treatment available and did not need all the work the first one suggested. We set the appointment up and when we went in we had another doctor, Alexander Shau, who we had never met before. He wants to change the treatment plan now to a crown. I said we were just here about this 2 weeks ago. I asked if they had any pictures showing the tooth had changed from 2 weeks ago to now. He did not. I said I wanted to talk to my ortho and see if her casts the ortho did or his info showed a change in the tooth. He agreed. However, within 5 minutes (literally) he walked to the receptionist and had her come to tell me that Dr Shau would not treat my daughter unless we did what he wanted to do. I explained that we had seen (THREE) of their doctors and each had a different view. She said he agrees with the first. My response "So, you are saying your second doctor is negligent in the treatment plan of one of my children?" We walked out of the office. How do you go to an office that said one of their doctors is wrong, another says his way or no way, and think that we have any faith at all in the practice. This place is a disgrace! read more
