The Diner's orange juice was not very good, and food was undercooked (pancake has egg in it still) and pricey

This morning, I was craving a traditional breakfast as was my date. So, after a little bit of looking online, we decided to give Austin Diner a shot. In short, I'm glad we did. We both enjoyed our pancakes -- hers were chocolate chip and mine were strawberry. The bacon is some of the best around as it's clearly been cooked on a flat top to a perfect level of crispiness. The quality of the bacon is also stellar as it's almost all meat with very little fat. The side of home fries that I ordered were excellent as they were crispy and well seasoned. Overall, our meal was excellent. The only flubs came with our service. Namely, our drinks went pretty much empty and we had to get our server's attention about that. I think a lot of their breakfast rush would be under better control if diners weren't waiting for things that the server should address. Another example of this for us was that the container with butter and jelly at our table was empty, requiring our server to make a trip for that. Regardless, this is definitely a great breakfast option. Come earlier in the day to avoid the rush. read more

What a great unique diner. Not only do they have regular diner food, they have Mexican food. I LOVE Chillaquiles. That was the special when I went. I got them and wasn't disappointed. That green sauce was money. The service was excellent from the time we walked in. The decor was so cool. I loved all of the old appliances on display. I have to go back a few more times before they get the 5 stars but I have faith that they will. I will definitely be back to try something else. read more

This is a hidden gem. After living in the neighborhood for the past 9 years, we finally came to Austin diner for breakfast on a Saturday. We were seated right away and loved the classic diner vibe. I'm really....concerned...about this, a favorite place of mine. I was last there on a busy Saturday, picking up takeout. It was a 30 minute wait AFTER I was told on a phone call that my order would be ready in ten. Well, that happens, no biggie. It was busy. But today we arrived just after 11 AM, only three tables were occupied. It took 25 minutes from the time we ordered until the plates came. I had the Pot Roast, today's special, my wife the Chef's Salad. My pot roast was, frankly, tasteless. The sides (green beans and black eyed peas) seemed to have come out of a can. I was real hungry, so I finished it off. But I will never order it again. The bread was a cold roll that made up for not being fresh by being small. My wife's salad was disappointing as well. The lettuce base was almost all white or yellow, very poor quality. My wife never complains, but I know that when she leaves two-thirds of a Chef's Salad, that it was not good. I get the feeling that the food we were served was not above institutional-quality, and by the time I was out of there, it was about $45 with a tip. I'm sorry, but after two mediocre to bad experiences in a row, it's time to find a new favorite diner. I was not impressed with this place. I had to ask to be moved because they had no social distancing. Took forever to get served. It took a long time for drinks to come. Two servers but one seemed to do everything. I liked my biscuits and eggs and my husband liked his tacos but not pancake or syrup. The hot chocolate was good.. I love Austin Diner because it's just a normal diner that serves non-pretentious diner food quickly. While it's a treat to get gourmet free-range omelettes made with organic quail eggs, non-GMO braised emu belly, Himalayan pink salt, and topped with handcrafted parsley chutney with a side of cage-free, artisan waffle fries at the plethora of upscale brunch places in town, I usually don't want to put up with the wait or traffic to cure my hangover with just regular pork, eggs, potato, and coffee. The food here is simple, tasty, and affordable! I like that they don't over-salt the food like every other restaurant in town. I only come here for the breakfast foods so I don't know how the lunch/dinner items stack up, but I'm impressed with the breakfast. I usually get the Mexican Omelette with chorizo with a cup of black coffee and that'll fix a hangover real quick! They also offer Tex-Mex breakfast specials every once in a while, which makes my mouth water every time I read the specials board. My bill totals around $10 to $15, which is great since that's usually how much the fancy places charge for just the entree itself. Austin Diner is within walking distance of my apartment which makes it easy to stumble over in the morning. It's a miracle to walk in and be seated immediately, which is rare for brunch in this town! All the patrons and employees seem happy to be there every time I visit. The booths and tables are fairly worn, but it gives it character. I had a buy one get one coupon that they did not honor. Why would a business pay to have coupons printed and not honor them? Although, you may have trouble finding it now because it's in an unassuming strip mall next to the savers with inconspicuous signage. Sit in a hand-stapled vinyl booth, admire the kitschy assortment of second hand mixers and blenders that line the ceiling-height windows as "decor"... order the Mexican Scramble breakfast (may not be the technical name, but... that's what it is)... The restaurant had an Austin vibe to it when we walked inside. They have displays of various antique kitchen tools and glassware around the place which looks cool. It was clean and the staff was very friendly. I saw some early bird breakfast specials on the table (see pic). I decided on a two egg plate which came with a choice of bread, one side and one breakfast meat for about $6.50. The food was good, although the bacon was a little overcooked. The coffee was alright, typical diner coffee. The highlight of the visit was a patron that stopped by our table on his way out. Out of the blue he said hello and then performed a magic trick for us, making a small piece of fabric dissappear in his hand. He was only two feet away and I still don't know hiw he did it. Been thinking of this place for months now since I drive by it frequently and it's near my neighborhood. Every time I want a diner-type breakfast or atmosphere I usually end up resorting to Kerby or Magnolia's, or sometimes Cisco's (yes, I'm limited). Mr. Imbiss finally coaxed me into trying something different to help diversify my local-diner repertoire. The place was packed, and that's always a good sign, plus there's plenty of parking in the back. Since I only have Kerby and Mags to compare to I'll say that when you walk in it's quite eclectic. Black and white checkered floor, lots of different items on the walls (45 record LP's, antique coffee pots). Some of the aqua blue bench seats are torn up w/ the foam exposed, it does have it's own style and weird theme. The food: don't expect 8 different omelets or 15 different breakfast plates, they have the basics here, so I got the Migas which includes black beans, 2 tortillas and home fries. My friend got the Beef Omelet special that was smothered w/ a chipotle salsa and came w/ home fries and 1 pancake, which we substituted for "Jack's Cakes" which is a gingerbread-type pancake made w/ cottage cheese. My migas were great, not the best but very good. The pancake was good - nothing special, if it's supposed to be a health thing then I do recommend since it tastes like a normal pancake. Home fries were on the greasy side but still good, but the salsa was blah (that's a downer) - - tasted like it came from a large plastic Ortega jug (ehhh). Service was great, our waitress filled our drinks and was prompt and courteous. The prices are reasonable too, not your usual $1.00 mark-up as you may see in other areas. It's early on Friday morning. I'm off work and snuggling under the covers, warm and cozy and twittering with my morning #warriors. I checked the yelp reviews, mixed as they were, and was still not fully in to the whole idea. *Roaches?! Eww! Mark Mc. tells me that I'll love the place, to quite reading reviews from people who just don't "get it". I agree to give it a try (what sort of yelp adventurer would I be if I didn't go?), get dressed, and wait for Mark Mc. to come scoop me up. We enter the spot and it smells awesomely of bacon. Mmmmmmmm We sit at a booth and I order some giant concoction of breakfast with sausage, bacon, hash browns, eggs and their oh so yummy biscuits with sausage gravy. Sweet Heaven! It's awesome. Mark Mc asks me if I like it. I nod with my eyes closed and a mouth of yummy goodness. I couldn't finish my food... there's just so much of it... but wowzers! I've been driving by this place for years, meaning to try it, but I didn't have an excuse to stop in until this past weekend. Some friends were heading there for lunch on Saturday, so I vowed to work out on Sunday in exchange for the no-doubt artery-clogging feast I was about to enjoy. I tasted a couple of things, and they were all pretty good: -The Home Fries were seasoned really well and a good mixture of chewy and crispy. -The Biscuits and Gravy were heavenly. I be the biscuits would be delicious on their own. But really, you can't go wrong dousing anything in country gravy. Am I right? -The Buttermilk Pancakes were soft and pillowy--very satisfying. Honestly, I don't know how my friends managed to eat so much food. I thought I was going to pop after my sandwich and, the piece de resistance,......the Strawberry Milkshake! They make their malts and shakes from scratch. They didn't use strawberry ice cream for this shake. They used vanilla ice cream, cream, and fresh strawberries. It wasn't too thick or too rich. It was the perfect shake. I'd probably go back just for another one of those! So, why the 3 stars? I guess the food alone scored 4, but I took a star away for service. Our waiter couldn't adequately communicate with us in English, which would have been ok, but he only placed about 50% of our order. Since we like unique and quirky places, Austin Diner seemed the perfect fit. We walked in and were excited to see a throwback to our youth with the torn plastic, and lumpy booths. The tables were the old formica tops. They even had the small coin operated music boxes at each booth. We both concluded, this is going to be really good, or really bad. Guess what, really bad. In addition to the food, the service was terrible and slow. The food was delivered and by-by waitress. My wife order the french dip, which was just weird. In addition to just a few ounces of odd tasting beef, it was top with cheese and raw peppers. The 2 ounces of au-jus came in one of those small tasting cups. I decided to treat myself to the chicken fried steak, but don't worry about the calories, I couldn't eat but a few bits. It was almost as good as Banquet frozen dinners. This is my all-time favorite breakfast place in Austin! I've been coming here since I was only a few months old, and have been coming weekly since with my father, and the food hasn't declined in quality since! the staff are sweet and kind, and even offered my best friend a slice of cake when we came in for her birthday! The Longhorn skillet is delicious if you're dying of hunger, but the early bird special is always a hit when on a budget! This is my second visit. I was a little skeptical at first glance, not because of the strip mall, but because of more telling signs such as the condition of booths or the air vents. That aside, I'm glad I gave them a chance. First visit- had the Vegetarian Tacos and hash browns. To make the tacos vegan, I was able to sub black beans for the refried. Loved them, very suprised/impressed. Tortillas and veggies were fresh and on point. I enjoyed both of their salsas. The hash browns could have been crispier, but that may just be my preference. Coffee was good, not watery or anything. Service was spot on for a slow weekday (think the weather was very bleh that day). Today- kept it lame and simple, just water and oatmeal. Very tasty.
